FUSS, Nicolas.
1755. DSB V, pp. 209-210; Daumas, Scientific instruments, pp. 152-153. First and only edition of an important manual on the construction of telescopes and microscopes, the first publication by Nicolas Fuss (1755-1826), who grew up in a modest Swiss family but was to become one of the leading mathematicians and astronomers of his generation. The majority of Fuss's writings present solutions to problems raised by Leonhard Euler, in the fields of mathematics, mechanics, astronomy and geodesy. Euler's memoirs had been published earlier, but they were inaccessible to most people working in optics. Fuss published the present work, giving a very simple and rather schematic résumé of Euler's work. He listed "a number of formulae for the construction of telescopes with a magnification of five to fifty times, for achromatic telescopes with three lenses and a magnification from 25 to 320 times, and for achromatic telescopes with four or five lenses" (Daumas). Fuss gave all the necessary theoretical measurements for constructing these instruments. It ends with a description of a microscope with an achromatic objective of three lenses. With a small brown stain in the lower outside corner of the last few leaves, a small tear in the gutter margin of one leaf and small stains in the foot margin of another, but otherwise in very good condition and with large margins. Rebacked and restored at an early date.

Demosthenes
Impensis C. Bathurst, Londini [London] 1755 - 2 vols., 8vo, pp. 8, 184, 166; [ii], 447, [1, ads] + frontispiece in each vol. (that in vol. 2 a folding map). The Greek text sections of vol. 1 interleaved with blanks. Contemporary reverse calf, boards bordered in blind. Lightly toned, a little marginal staining at beginning of vol. 2, several of the interleaves excised. Rebacked to style, new black leather labels, hinges relined. Some 28 leaves of the interleaved blanks, covering four orations, filled with an English translation in a later hand. Ownership inscription of H.G. Monro to front pastedown of each vol., vol. 1 also with modern inscription of A. Tomberg and early book-label of Mr. C. Cottrell at front, early ownership inscription of Jeremy Bedford Esqr, Pet. Coll. Cam. at rear along with an accomplished doodle of a man in profile. An interesting copy of the first edition of Demosthenes edited by William Allen, about whom little seems to be known; this appears to be his only publication. This copy was interleaved with blanks within the sections of Greek text at the time of original binding, but these only appear to have been used perhaps 75 or 100 years later - judging by the hand, which does not seem an obvious match for any of the ownership inscriptions - when translations were written in for four of the orations. Several of the blanks have been excised, leaving just enough stub to show that the excised leaves seem to have also been used for translations in the same hand; perhaps they contained too many mistakes. Vaissette, J[oseph].
1755. 8vo. 12 vols. With 72 engr. maps. Contemp. French full calf with giltstamped labels and gilt spines. All edges red; marbled endpapers. A fine copy of the twelve-volume octavo edition of the most detailed and accurate geography of its day (published simultaneously in four quarto volumes). All the maps are taken from the "Atlas Portatif" (1748-49) of Robert de Vaugondy. The fine map of the Arabian Peninsula is derived, via Vaugondy, from Delisle; "it includes the three classic divisions of the Arabian Peninsula and the following regional subdivisions: Tahama in the south west, Bahrain, which extends along the east coast and includes the town of Cathema, Yemen in the south which includes Oman, the States of the Cherif of Mecca which includes Hagiaz and parts of the centre of the Arabian Peninsula. Although the width of the Red Sea is exaggerated, the Sinai peninsula's shape is very close to reality. The topographical features and watercourses are not very different to how they are shown on other maps of the same period. A town named Naged is shown to the north west of the town of Janama" (Al Ankary). - Some bindings slightly bumped at extremeties. Contemporary ms. ownership "Leon. van Berg" to pastedowns; titles bear stamp of the La Valsainte Charterhouse, Switzerland (dissolved in 1825). Slightly browned. Formerly in the collection of the Swiss industrialist Herry W. Schaefer. Streit 17, p. 252, n. 6198. Brunet VI, 19613. OCLC 34221488. For the map of Arabia cf. Tibbetts 278. MILLER, Philip (1691-1771)
London: Printed for the Author; and sold by John Rivington [and others], 1755. 2 volumes, folio. (16 1/2 x 10 3/4 inches). Engraved allegorical headpiece to the dedication leaf after and by J. S. Miller, woodcut headpiece and initial-frame. 300 hand-coloured engraved plates (two folding) after G. D. Ehret, J. Bartram, W. Houston, R. Lancake and J. S. Miller by Miller, T. Jefferys, and J. Mynde. Uncut. Contemporary marrbled paper boards, expertly rebacked to style in tan calf, spine gilt with raised bands. Housed in a slipcase. A lovely set of the first edition of Miller's illustrated supplement to his overwhelmingly popular Gardeners Dictionary. While conceived as a complement to an earlier publication, Miller's Figures of ... Plants "is a sufficiently complete work and may be rated on its own merits" (Hunt). In the preface, Miller stated his intention of publishing one figure of a plant for every known genus, but abandoned this in favor of, "...those Plants only, which are either curious in themselves, or may be useful in Trades, Medicine, &c. including the Figures of such new Plants as have not been noticed by any former Botanists." The plants illustrated were either engraved from drawings of specimens in the Chelsea Physic Garden or drawings supplied by Miller's numerous correspondents, including John Bartram, the Pennsylvania naturalist (cf. plate 272), and Dr. William Houston, who travelled widely in the Americas and West Indies and bequeathed Miller his papers, drawings, and herbarium (cf. plates 44 and 182). RUGGIERI, Ferdinando.
Florence Jean Bouchard, 1755. Four volumes, folio (49.1 x 38.6 cm), small cancel slip pasted in the dedication correcting the publisher's name, titles with etched vignettes, 4 additional engraved titles, engraved folding plan of Florence, and 282 engraved plates, some of these double-page (volume 4 part 1 lacking additional engraved title but probably never present in this copy, one plate in vol. 4 with the margin renewed at an early date, occasional marginal dampstaining). Contemporary vellum, gilt spine labels, a little worn and soiled. The first combined edition of three separate works. An excellent set with fine provenance. The set's interest in literature—the library at Holland House was extensive and well used—embraced the classics, the Renaissance, and the Augustan period. The glamour of the house was enhanced by its association with the essayist and statesman Joseph Addison, who had lived … [Click Below for Full Description]

[French and Indian War]
London, 1755. Two volumes. [4],771pp. plus folding map colored in outline; [2],520pp. Text in English and French. Large, thick quarto. Contemporary mottled calf, spines very richly gilt, raised bands, gilt leather labels. The Macclesfield copies, with their bookplates on the front pastedowns and their blindstamps. Leather cracking on front hinge of both volumes, bindings a bit shelfworn and rubbed. Some offsetting on the map, else very clean and neat internally. Very good. A most valuable compilation of the memorials of the French and British Commissioners, printed privately in London from the verbatim originals as delivered in printed form from Paris. It includes a thorough examination of the history and geography of eastern Canada and Maine. and also presents the claims of the two nations with regard to the Ohio and Mississippi valleys. The map, entitled "A New Map of Nova Scotia and Cape Britain with the Adjacent Parts of New England and Canada composed from a great number of actual Surveys," measures 24 x 18 1/2 inches and is neatly colored at the borders. It was published by Thomas Jefferys, and Henry Stevens suggested that it "was no doubt the best map of the country obtainable at the time. This work was privately printed and complete copies are very rare." The Paris edition does not include the map. "The most important contemporary source on the origins of the old French War" - Howes. The second volume, which Howes calls a different issue of the first, is wholly devoted to St. Lucia, and though published at the same time, is a wholly different and distinct wo … [Click Below for Full Description]
