[Click Below for Full Description]

Francis Hutcheson
printed and sold by R. & A. Foulis...London: sold by A, 1755. First edition, 2 volumes, 4to, pp. [12], xlviii, 358; [4], 380; contemporary full calf neatly rebacked, red and black morocco labels on spines; board edges dry and peeling, corners restored; the binding is sound and the text is clean; a good, sound copy. Among the subscribers is Adam Smith (a student of Hutcheson's at Glasgow who took two sets), and Lord Kaims. "Hutcheson was a close follower of the third Lord Shaftesbury, and had a great influence upon the Scottish philosophers of the 'common-sense' school. His first essays were directed against the selfish and cynical theories of Hobbes and Mandeville. He adopted and developed the 'moral sense' doctrine as given by Shaftesbury in contrast to the egoistic utilitarianism of his time...he was apparently the first writer to use Bentham's phrase, 'the greatest happiness of the greatest number'...[and] He may be thus classed as one of the first exponents of a decided utilitarianism as distinguished from 'egoistic hedonism'" (DNB). Halfpenny, William and John
London: Printed for Robt. Sayer, 1755. Third edition, enlarged "with the Addition of Four Plates in Quarto" (first published in 1752). Engraved general title-page and 64 engraved plates (4 folding) by Parr and B. Cole. Four parts in one volume, with separate title-pages. Part I (New Designs for Chinese Temples): plates 1-14 (including engraved sectional title), 8 pp. text. Part II (New Designs for Chinese Bridges): plates 15-28, 8 pp. text. Part III (New Designs for Chinese Doors): plates 29-44, 4 pp. text. Part IV (New Designs for Chinese Gates): plates 45-64; 8 pp text. 8vo. When Chinoiserie was all the Rage. The fashion for the Chinese style was initiated, according to Harris, by Frederick, the Prince of Wales, who in 1749 had a "House of Confucius" built for him at Kew, as well as a Chinese barge with oarsman in Oriental costume to row him up and down the Thames. William Halfpenny was never a designer to miss his opportunity to exploit the latest fashion: "Halfpenny's role had never been to reform taste but to reduce it to practicable terms and disseminate it, as he said of his Chinese designs. 'to workmen at a distance from the Metropolis'. ... The fact that these exotic [i.e., Chinese and Moorish] styles had no established rules must have made them especially attractive to the inventive, non-conforming William Halfpenny. The liberties he was able to take in altering , combining, and adapting them to British requirements were greater in degree but the same in principle as those he had taken with the Palladian idiom" (Harris, p. 221). ROUSSELOT, -- .
FIRST EDITION of the first book on podiatry or surgery of the foot as an independent speciality, and extraordinarily rare. G&M 9190: "Because of the non-standard title page without mention of place, publisher or date, the pamphlet seems to have been intended to have been given away by the author." In his introductory remarks Rousselot argues for an independent surgical approach to diseases of the feet, which he says is an entirely neglected aspect of surgery currently in the hands of untrained women and maladroit charlatans. He argues for it to be raised to the status of dentists and hernia surgeons. After this important and committed preface, Rousselot gives medical descriptions of the different corns and their surgical treatments. "He wrote three books, Mémoire sur les cors des pieds, 1755 (no copy of this book has ever been traced) and further books in 1762 [Nouvelles observations, ou méthode certaine sur le traitement des cors, 45 pages, G&M 4302.1] and 1769 [Toilette des Pieds]. His contribution was not a great one as he was too much influenced by Turner, but his remedies show common sense" (J.C. Dagnall, "The history of chiropodial literature", in The Chiropodist, 1965). As J.C. Dagnall wrote in 1965, no copy of this book was then known, and he himself constantly sought for a copy, but in vain. Since then and with improved knowledge of library holdings three copies have come to light, at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Harvard and Erfurt. The present copy is the only one known to have appeared for sale.

Hugh Farmer
London: Buckland, 1755. Hugh Farmer (c1714-87) was a dissenter who held a place at Walthamstow, and there nurtured the size of the congregation significantly over many years until retiring due to blindness brought on by cataracts. His most prominent work is his Dissertation on Miracles. The interest in the relationship between natural law and theology which fed that work finds other outlets in this compendium of two publications. In the first of these, Farmer explores that relationship in terms of the reality of Christ's experiences in the desert. In the second, it is explored in terms of demonology. In the first publication Farmer explores critical views of Christ's temptation in the desert and defends his own conclusion that it can be viewed neither as an 'outward transaction' nor as a 'diabolical delusion' or 'divine vision,' before discussing the significance of temptation generally. In the second he attacks Worthington's Essay on Demoniacks, asserting that the demonic possessions discussed were not the work of Lucifer, but rather of the souls of departed people. He concludes by accepting that Worthington is under the same obligation as he to defend his convictions, and concedes that zealotry ought not to destroy benevolence and charity between Christians. CONDITION Externally, bound in old quarter calf with worn marbled boards and contrasting label; spine chipped, joints cracked, and corners of boards worn.Internally, firmly bound. Bérard, Jean-Antoine; [Blanchet, Jean]; [Poisson, Jeanne Antoinette, Marquise de Pompadour]; [Goncourt, Edmond de]
Paris: Dessaint & Saillant; Prault, Fils; Lambert; et aux Adresses Ordinaires pour la Musique, 1755. First edition of this eighteenth-century guide to the art of singing, dedicated to the famously musical Madame de Pompadour. Now attributed to the Abbé Blanchet, L'Art du Chant opens with an account of "la méchanique de la Voix," including a startling full-page engraving of a pair of human lungs, with detailed notes on breathing, pronunciation, articulation, and pacing. The work concludes with an engraved songbook that encourages the reader to practice the techniques described in the text, aiming at particular vocal effects: "les sons entrecoupés," "les sons tendres," "les sons légers." L'Art du Chant is dedicated to the royal favorite Pompadour, who by 1755 had retired as Louis XV's mistress and assumed her final role as friend of the King and informal minister of the arts. Pompadour was a gifted amateur musician whose talents were on full display at Versailles, where she built a private theater and staged a sparkling series of ballets, operas, and comedies to amuse the King. Renowned for her "light, crystalline voice" and mastery of the harpsichord, guitar, and mandolin, she frequently chose to be pictured surrounded by her instruments and scores: "Pompadour situates herself squarely in a stellar lineage of noble French consorts who were performers, patrons, and connoisseurs of music" (Goodman, The Portraits of Madame de Pompadour). This copy belonged to nineteenth-century French man of letters Edmond de Goncourt, founder of the the Acad&eacute … [Click Below for Full Description]

Romaine, William
Printed for J. Worrall (and 3 others), London, 1755. 8vo. [viii], 24 pp., disbound (removed from a nonce volume). Front cover a little soiled, water mark at fore-edge and bottom throughout otherwise a good copy. Preserved in a mylar L-sleeve backed with lig-free board. Curious sermon occasioned by the 1755 London earthquakes. From the important Preface, which was not included in the 1st edition: "It is one very prevailing opinion, that earthquakes are not common in this country. They are not. But the less common they are, the more should they alarm us when they come; for there is a providence over this country, and when He orders, our land shall shake and reel like a drunkard. He sent two earthquakes lately, to stir us up to repentance, and he who sent these can send a third, and London may share the fate of Lisbon. It is another opinion, that earthquakes are the effects of second causes. Be it so. Then there is a first cause on whom they depend. But the learned can give a philosophical account of them, What! such an account, I suppose, as they did of the earthquakes in the year 1750, by changing their names into airquakes, and then they were explained philosophically. It will not be so easy to account for the shaking of the land for several hundred miles, and of the sea for several thousands at once, which was the case in these last earthquakes." According to Romaine's biographer: "The times in which he was called to the exercise of his ministry in the West End of the metropolis were distinguished by some signal judgments of Almighty God; such particularly as were the eart … [Click Below for Full Description]

[London],: Publish'd by the Author Feb 13th 1755 according to the Act of Parliament, and Sold by And. Millar opposite Katharine Street in the Strand,, 1755. With the Roads, Distances, Limits, and Extent of the Settlements, Humbly Inscribed to the Right Honourable the Earl of Halifax, And the other Right Honourable The Lords Commissioners for Trade & Plantations, by their Lordships. Most Obliged and very humble Servant Jno, Mitchell. 1755. Large engraved wall map on eight sheets joined and mounted on linen. Mitchell's map is widely regarded as the most important map in American history. Prepared on the eve of the Seven Years' War (or French and Indian War), it was the second large format map of North America printed by the British (the first being Henry Popple's map of 1733), and included the most up to date information of the region: "the result of a uniquely successful solicitation of information from the colonies" (Edney). Over the following two hundred years, it would play a significant role in the resolution of every significant dispute involving the northern border of the then British Colonies and in the definition of the borders of the new United States of America. John Mitchell (1711-1768) was born in Virginia and educated in medicine in Edinburgh, Scotland. He returned to Virginia and practised as a physician, before emigrating back to England in 1746, where he was introduced to the president of the Board of Trade and Plantatio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rousseau, Jean-Jacques
Marc-Michel Rey, Amsterdam, 1755. First edition of Rousseau's discourse on social inequality and injustice. Octavo, bound in full contemporary sheep, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, orange spine label, engraved frontispiece and headpieces, errata leaf at rear. In very good condition. Genevan philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Discourse on Inequality is considered a cornerstone in modern political and social thought. The work was the first discourse to expose Rousseau's conception of a human state of nature and idea that the progression of civil society is the basis of all inequality. Throughout the books four parts, Rousseau discusses two types of inequality: natural, or physical inequality, and ethical, or moral inequality. Rousseau appears to take a cynical view of civil society, where man has strayed from his "natural state" of individual independence and freedom to satisfy his individual needs and desires. Prijs: Euro975,- (incl .ijst).

GHENT - PHARMACOPOEIA].
, . . Ad 1: Anet (2 copies); Daems & Vandewiele, p. 106 (3 copies); STCV (2 copies); WorldCat (1 copy); not in Blake; Wellcome; ad 2: Anet (1 copy); Daems & Vandewiele, pp. 106-107; not in STCV; WorldCat. Ad 1: Unrecorded first issue of the rare third edition of the Ghent pharmacopoeia, the first to call itself a "pharmacopoea" (instead of "antidotarium") in the title. This copy differs slightly from all others recorded in that it contains a somewhat different preface and approval, which is signed only by A.C.J. van Rossum and dated 1755. It therefore lacks the more expanded approval from 1756 of the professors of the University of Louvain, including that of Van Rossum, as well as the subsequent dedication to Empress Maria Theresa. The present variant is therefore almost certainly an earlier issue.Ad 2: New edition of the taxa, regulating the prices of pharmacists in Ghent. The previous version dates from 1690, and this new edition was published to reflect the changes made in the pharmacopoeia of 1756.With the binding worn at the spine and somewhat along the extremities. Slightly thumbed, with a small tear in the fore-edge margin of pp. 239-248 and a water stain in the fore-edge margin of the final part of ad 1 starting at p. 265; a good copy.

Siddons, Sarah (British actress 1755 - 1831)
Thursday, no year, np. 3 pages. 8vo. The great actress Sarah Siddons writes a humourous letter to one of her confidants to decline an invitation, and also to report a scare of scarlet fever at her daughter's school. In part:"'Time Time' Oh that one could but make Time as the people make gass! or that I like those 'riches, could make to myself wings and fly away,' then would I soon be with you my dear Miss Upton at Ickworth Park. But my Horses who have no wings would consume all the hours I could steal from my business, upon the road, and I should scarcely be able to utter dont!! else I should be obligd to return. but I beg of you to present my grateful acknowledgments to Lord and Lady Bristol for the honour of their very flattering presentation, with many thanks for the game which I received today from that indefatigable friend of mine, whose cordial good will to be useful by night or by day (simple honest soul as he is) is worthy the invitation of greater men (I dont mean taller). Mind that Miss Upton! I can tell you I am not merry tho' you may think I am by the above nonsense? for my dear little girl is brought from school for fear of the Scarlet Fever which has appeared at Christ Church, and I'm forcd to the vexatious precaution of sending her to a Lodging? where she must remain for at least a fortnight? I thank God she seems[?, obscured by seal] perfectly well, and she was brought away so immediately after the first alarm that in all probability she will not have it? in the mean time we must submit to this separation in consideration of others no less than myself. ROUSSEAU, JEAN JAQUES (sic!) - [THE INEQUALITY OF MAN]
Amsterdam, Marc Michel Rey, 1755 + Geneve, (1750) + 1753 8vo. Very nice contemporary full mottled calf with richly gilt spine and triple gilt line-borders to boards. Spine somewhat worn and a bit of wear to extremities. A very nice, clean and unrestored copy, with good margins and printed on good paper. Title-page printed in red and black, engraved title-vignette, engraved frontispiece (by Eisen, engraved by Sornique), 1 large engraved vignette and a few woodcut vignettes. Minor occasional brownspotting. Frontispiece + LXX, (2), 262, (2, -errata & avis pour le relieur) pp.

The two other works collate thus: 63 pp. + (6), 92 pp. ¶ First edition, first issue, of one of Rousseau's main works and one of the most important works of political thought in general. The "Discourse on the Origins of Inequality" is considered Rousseau's first important work and the work that lays the foundation for his later thought.

The present copy is with all the first issue pointers (e.g. the erroneous spelling of "Jaques", the accent aigu in "conformé" added by hand by M.M. Rey on p. 11) and the three cancels (pp. LXVII-LXVIII, 111-112, and 139-140). According to Tchemerzine, there were copies on thick, heavy paper ("Il existe des ex. en papier fort"), of which this is presumably one. At least the dedication (LXX pp.) in the present copy is printed on very thick paper, whereas the paper of the remaining leaves is a bit less heavy. The present copy has nice, wide margins. According to Dufour there are five counterfeit-editions bearing the same date (they are easily distinguishable fro … [Click Below for Full Description]
