An Essay Upon the Life, Writings, and Character, Of Dr. Jonathan Swift

Interspersed with some occasional Animadversions Upon the Remarks of a late critical Author, And upon the Observations of an anonymous Writer on those Remarks. By Deane Swift, Esq; [sic] To which is added, That Sketch of Dr. Swift’s Life, written by the Doctor himself, which was lately presented By the Author of this Essay to the University Of Dublin. London, Printed for Charles Bathurst, at the Cross-Keys, Opposite St. Dunstan’s Church in Fleetstreet [sic]. 1755. Demy 8vo; blank before half-title; Errata leaf at end; pp.[vi (unpaged)]+375+[i (publisher’s advertisements)]+53 (last page Errata)+[i (blank)]; [A]3, B - I, K - U, X -Z, Aa8, Bb4; [2]A - [2]C8, [2]D3; original blue-grey paper covered boards, cream paper spine, label; a.e. uncut. Recently re-backed with period paper in imitation of the original, and with new end-papers of period paper; original boards a little scuffed and marked; Q7 and 8, and R1, 2, 3, and 4 show some foxing to blank lower margins; S4 and S5 slit from the lower margins into text (v. note) this being repaired without the use of tissue and without loss of text; flaw in blank lower margin of 2A6; otherwise a very nice copy. The first state of text, with S4 and S5 slit for cancellation, but not cancelled, l.18 on p.263 reading ‘Dean WINTER’ in upper and lower case instead of ‘DEAN WINTER’ all in upper case. This is sufficient to distinguish the cancels, but there are other differences: the catchwords on pp.263, 264, and 265 reading respectively here ‘extreamly’, ‘VANESSA’S’, and ‘the’ rather than ‘have’, ‘HERSED’, and ‘gion’, the text being also differently arranged, the first prose paragraph on p.265 being moved in the cancel and run on after ‘concubine’ at the foot of p.263 and top of p.264. CBEL, II, p.581; Rothschild, 1989; Teerink-Scouten, 1345; ESTC, T148532: none of these noting the cancels. With the initial blank not present in the rebound Rothschild copy, but without the two added leaves of trade (R. Thyer) advertisements present there. Coincidences of the chainlines combined with faint off-printing suggest that the Errata leaf, though numbered as p.53 of the second part, was actually printed as A2 of the first part (the prelims. having, as usual, been printed last), the present A2 and A3 being actually A3 and A4, and together with the four leaves of gathering Bb completing a full sheet, whilst gathering D of the second part was printed as a separate quarter sheet. In this copy F3 is signed E3; p.19 is paged 16; p159, 195; p.209, 181; p.212, 184; p.213, 177; p.216, 180; p.217, 189; p.226, 227; p.274, 275 and p.275, 274 the first letter of the first three lines on p.164 is raised above the line: all this as in every copy we have seen. The page number to p.93 is here perfect, however, suggesting perhaps an early state, as in some other copies seen it has been badly battered. The first biography of Swift, written by Deane Swift, the father of Theophilus and the cousin of Jonathan. It treats in especial of the great satirist’s relations to his contemporaries. Included in the text are unpublished letters from Dr. Swift, and a good deal of material by others of his circle, (among this a poem by ‘Stella’). The front blank bears the contemporary inscription ‘D: N: 1755 - Read’ All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

A View of the Palace of Chantilli, taken from the Principal Entrance / Vue du Chateau de Chantilli, prise du cote de la Principale Entree

Sold by J. Boydell, Engraver at the Unicorn the corner of Queen Street in Cheapside, London 1755 - A magnificent view of a stunning chateau in Chantilly, France by the celebrated landscape engraver Jacques Rigaud. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst English and European artists and printmakers, which sought to visually record their country's natural beauties. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism, artists and printmakers began to publish topographical prints of important sights and architectural attractions. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside they were meant to encourage public recognition of national treasures. These topographical prints were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels, or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. By joining this printing trend Jacques Rigaud made a name for himself in both France and England, and became one of the most successful French landscape engravers. He dedicated his artistic life to producing delicate engraving of national beauties across France. He executed a large series of works depicting France's stately homes and he worked in England, where he was commissioned to illustrate the celebrated gardens at Stowe. Rigaud's work influenced an entire generation of English and French printmakers; his delicate formal engravings established a classical format for topographical prints, which would be used until the onset of the nineteenth century. Le Blanc, Manuel de L'Amateur D'Estampes III, p. 337, no. 81-86 (Le Blanc mistakenly confuses Jacques Rigaud with his nephew Jean Baptiste Rigaud and attributes Jacques' work wrongly) Clayton, The English Print 1688-1802 p. 156-157. Hand-coloured engraving. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition. Framed in a beautiful gold-leaf frame with a cream washline mount. Image size: 8 1/2 x 17 inches.

Carte Des Possessions Angloises & Francoises Du Continent De L'Amerique Spetentionale.

      R. and J. Ottens, Amsterdam 1755 - First issue of the Ottens map of the French and English possessions, published on the eve of the French and Indian War. In 1755, Ottens issued a Dutch version of Jean Palairet's important map. The map showed the French and English territorial claims on the eve of the French and Indian War, with the colouring reflecting those claims. The English possessions are shown in yellow, with much of the region between the Appalachians and the Mississippi shown in pink reflecting territory occupied by English settlers or "peuples allies de l'Angleterre." The French claims are coloured in green, encompassing much of Canada and all of a vast Louisiana. French forts are circled in red and a red boundary line extends through Acadia to Lake Ontario. A second issue of the map was published following the Treaty of Paris which ended the war. In that issue, the date has been removed from the title and the colouring keys removed from either side of the scale of miles and the hand colouring on the map reflects the new boundaries following the war. A rare and colourful map of North America published on the eve of the war. London Printed, Boston, New-England, Re- printed and Sold by: D. Fowle and by Z. Fowle, 1755.. [2],64pp. and advertisement leaf. Small octavo. Antique-style three- quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, gilt leather label. A bit of light foxing. Contemporary ownership signature on titlepage. Very good. First published in London the same year, this is the very scarce first American edition. A second Boston edition (identified as such on the titlepage) was also issued in 1755, due to the great demand for the work. Huske reviews the history of North American settlement from an English point of view, then describes French aggressions in Nova Scotia, in Maine, penetration into upper New York and the Ohio country and throughout the South. Huske urges immediate war to remedy the situation. "This book was, at the time of its appearance, both inflammatory and influential. It set forth British aims in North America, making a clear, vigorous, and concise attack on the French pretension..." - Lande. Often attributed to John Huske, the North American Imprints Project, DNB, and British Museum CATALOGUE list the author as Ellis Huske (John Huske's younger brother). Ellis Huske was postmaster in Boston in 1734, preceded Benjamin Franklin as deputy postmaster general of the colonies, and was the publisher of the BOSTON WEEKLY POSTBOY for some twenty years. He died in 1755. HOWES H840, "aa." SABIN 34027. LANDE 463. EVANS 7434. NAIP w028956. WROTH, AMERICAN BOOKSHELF, p.142. DNB X, pp.322-323. APPLETON'S CYCLOPÆDIA III, p.330.

        Le Mouton Favori

Paris: chez l'Auteur, rue S. Jacques, au dessus des Jacobins, 1755. A charming Rococo print by the Parisian engraver Robert Gaillard, after the celebrated genre painter Charles Eisen. Charles Eisen (1720-1778) was renowned for his charming genre paintings, which were immensely popular with an art market eager for romantic images. Eisen's charm and grace, as well as his considerable talent, brought him to the attention of the King's mistress, Madame du Pompadour. Through her influence Eisen soon became a popular Court painter and a professor at the Acadèmie de Saint-Luc. Eisen was granted the honor of instructing Madame Pompadour in drawing, a privilege, which insured court favours as well as aristocratic patronage. Like Boucher, Eisen rejuvenated the 'pastoral tradition' in French art. His idealic images are wonderful examples of the decorative paintings and prints that would have adorned the walls of aristocratic homes across France. Here, Eisen depicts a young couple seated in a woodland setting, clearly enthralled with one another The man, who is obviously a shepherd, places a rose into his lover's hair while she threads a ribbon around the neck of the favored lamb. A goat wither her kids resting on her on one side, a devoted dog on the other, add to the general atmosphere of affection. All of nature seems to yearn for the happiness and union of the young couple, and so, like many Rococo pastoral scenes, it is symbolic rather than literal, an emblem of the transformative power of love. The common view that scenes like these are saccharine and sentimental completely misses the point. Le Blanc, Manuel de L'Amateur D'Estampes , p. 261, No. 47. Engraving. Printed on laid paper with watermark. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed on the bottom margin below the publication line. Small tear on right margin. Trimmed just outside platemark on top edge. Image size: 17 3/16 x 14 1/16 inches.

        Plate 22 - Lithodad crab

1755 - Albert Seba Illustrated plate from Locupletissimi Rerum Naturalium Thesauri Amsterdam: Wetsten, Smith and Waesberg, 1734-1755. Hand-colored copperplate engraving (later color) 29 1/4” x 39 3/4” framed Albert Seba’s magnificent Thesauri is a catalogue of his personal natural history collection, an immense conglomeration of specimens of a number of exotic plant and animal life. The son of a Frisian peasant who became rich in the service of the Dutch East India Company, Seba was an apothecary practicing in Amsterdam when he began to collect. His scientific interests and curiosity motivated him to amass this collection on a series of travels to the East and West Indies, and from purchases he made of specimens collected by travelers the world over. Many of the snakes, plants, fish and shells illustrated and described in his Thesauri were based on the specimens Seba collected in this “cabinet of curiosities.” In fact, many of the extravagant designs of the engravings were copies of the arrangements of the specimens in the drawers of his cabinet and the walls upon which he hung his collection, which in this way became a sort of predecessor of the modern museum. The collection was a valuable source to European natural historians, many of whom would not have had the opportunity to travel to the far flung destinations where the specimens originated. It is documented, for example, that Carolus Linneas visited the collection when he was in Amsterdam. These fine engravings made Seba’s unparalleled collection accessible to a much wider spectrum of enthusiasts, and modern viewers, too, can appreciate the stylized compositions and near-abstract quality of their stylized, fanciful compositions.
