Der monatlich-herausgegebenen Insecten-Belustigung ...

Nürnberg, bey den Röselischen Erben/ J.J. Fleischmann/ zu finden bey dem Verfasser, (1755-1761). 4 volumes. 4to (197 x 165mm). With 1 engraved portrait of Roesel, 3 handcoloured engraved frontispieces and 357 beautifully handcoloured engraved plates (printed on 285 leaves). Contemporary half calf, spines in 6 compartments with gilt lines and 2 gilt lettered labels (and:) KLEEMANN, C.F.C. Beyträge zur Natur- und Insecten-Geschichte. (Nürnberg 1761-1776). 4to (197 x 165mm). With 44 handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, spine in 6 compartments with gilt lines and 2 gilt lettered labels. A rare complete set of the most important and finest entomological German publication of the 18th century. Our copy comprises the rare supplement by Kleemann. The work was published by Roesel and his son-in-law Kleemann, both lived in Bavaria, in Nürnberg, working as artists, and both were ardent students of local natural history./"Roesel, who studied at first with his father and then with his uncle Wilhelm, an animal painter in Merseburg, later became a pupil of the famous Preisler in Nuremberg. After living in Copenhagen from 1726 to 1728 he returned to Nuremberg for good, and there, besides painting portraits and drawings, he applied himself in particular to the study of nature. He collected insects, their eggs and larvae, studied the process of hatching, pupation, and emergence, and painted all this in a most meticulous way, as Kleemann tells us. His manuscripts, with 406 illustrations, are now in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich. Roesel also made the engravings of his drawings and, until his death in 1757, his 'loving and diligent spouse' contributed fine colouring to the prints" (Nissen. Bestiaries). The handcoloured engraved frontispieces are of a great beauty and the plates, especially of his favourite group, butterflies and moths, usually show a complete life history, with eggs, larva, pupa and perfect insect.//There was no title page published for the first issue of the supplement by Kleemann. However a second issue of the supplement was published in 1792 which does have a printed title as well as 4 more plates. As is mostly the case the set is composed of first and second issues. The first 2 volumes are in the second issue, the remaining volumes in the first.//The text was printed on thin paper and as in all copies, is prone to foxing. Our copy likewise has some occasional slight foxing to the text. The plates being printed on fine thick paper have no foxing and are in mint condition. A nice uniformly bound set.//Junk, Rara p. 159; Nissen ZBI, 3466 & 2201.

        Physiological Essays

Edinburgh, 1755. First Edition. Orig. publisher's grey paste paper bds. . A good copy; boards present but detached; two leaves with clean tears and very old repairs (no loss - not offensive). 8vo.,A most interesting Whytt title in which he addresses two key issues: the first essay deals with the circulation of the blood in the capillaries; the second is his commentary on Haller's theories of nerve irritation. Whytt's essay on capillary blood flow is a milestone in the literature and the most important work in the field after the discovery by Leeuwenhoeck. Whytt reviewed the printed literature of the subject and drastically criticized all of it (see Fishman). He also drew the correct conclusion as to its nature and source. The second essay is an important first step in his own neurological work for which he is remembered. See G-M for author's other work; Fishman, p. 371 -` 2; Garrison, Neuro..

Plaster bust - Gipsbüste, geschaffen von Eduard (Schmidt von der) Launitz.

. Vor und an den Seiten bezeichnet und signiert "S. TH. A. SOEMMERRING 7 NAT. THORUNI MDCCLV. / DENAT. FRANCOF: Ad MOEN / MDCCCXXX. / E: DE LAUNITZ FEC". Höhe 50 cm, Breite 35 cm; Tiefe 21 cm; sehr guter Erhaltungszustand..

Paris, H.L. Guerin & L.F. Delatour, 1755. 2 volumes. 4to (250 x 195mm). pp. (4), lxii, 368; (2), 387, with 4 (3 folded) engraved plates, 250 full-page woodcuts and 190 small engravings (of botanical details) in the text. Contemporary mottled calf, spine with 6 raised bands, richly gilt ornaments and 2 gilt lettered lables (skilful repair to hinges). A fine copy of the first edition of this great French classic on trees and shrubs with the famous Matthiolus woodcuts. "During the seventeenth century engraving on metal began to replace woodcuts in botanical illustration, but the Mattioli blocks were so outstanding that they were bought by a French botanist of the following century, Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-82), who used a hundred and fifty-four of them to illustrate the two volumes of his 'Traité des Arbres et Arbustes' in 1755./As he said in his preface, 'J'ai eu le bonheur de recouvrer presque toutes les planches de la belle édition latine de Matthiole de Valgrisi: les Imprimeurs de mon Ouvrage ont fait graver avec soin celles qui y manquoient'. The hundred or so extra woodcuts of post-Mattioli plants may have been done with care, as he says, but they are incredibly stiff and lifeless, looking like the work of unskilled amateurs in comparison with that of Liberale and Meyerpeck" (S. Raphael. Mattioli's Herbal). A number of Duhamel's woodblocks of Mattioli were rediscovered some time ago and were offered for sale by Antiquariaat Junk, but are no longer available.//Provenance: Inside frontcover with Royal Horticultural Society. . Lausannae, Sumpt Marci-Mic Bousquet & Soc., 1755, 8°, 304 pp., 3 gefalt. Kupfertafeln, feiner Pappband d.Zt.. First Edition! - - The first complete edition of Haller's "De respiratione experimenta anatomica,Quibus Aeris Inter Pulmonem et Pleuram, Absentia Demonstratur, et Musculorum Intercostalium Internorum Officium Adseritur" is also included in this book. The first two parts were published in 1746 and 1747 while the third was published in Opuscula sua anatomica in 1751. The fourth part together with a new preface for the entire work is printed here for the first time. It is the first investigation into the role that the intercostal muscles have in respiration. A special section following this work contains a bibliography of Haller's works. - - Albrecht von Haller (1708-1877) here presents sixty-two selected case histories with related autopsy findings for a wide variety of disease conditions. In discussing the pathology of a case of torticollis, he expressed doubts about the therapeutic effectiveness of myotomy. He was well aware of the dangers of tracheal and vascular compression in individuals with large goiters, and was perhaps the first to describe calcification of the pericardium. By experimenting with dogs and cats, he showed that fluid is swallowed and aspirated into the lungs during drowning while this does not happen when the body is submerged after death. -cf. Carte de la Virginie et du Maryland . . .

Paris 1755 - Original outline color; excellent condition with a strong impression. Excellent example of the French edition of the definitive colonial map of Virginia and Maryland, which ¿became the preeminent map of Virginia for the remainder of the eighteenth century¿ (Stephenson & McKee). It appeared just a few years after the original edition, which is believed to have been published between 1753 and 1754. Moreover, most surviving copies of the English edition were printed in the 1770's and therefore postdate this French edition. The map had semi-official status, as it was the result of orders from the Board of Trade to colonial governors to prepare maps of their provinces. Another impetus for the map was the great westward push of settlement toward the Valley of Virginia. The map "shows distances between Virginia cities. It is also the first printed map to show parallel ridges and valleys in the Appalachian Mountain range in their correct direction" -- Schwartz/Ehrenberg, The Mapping of America, pp. 158-59. Peter Jefferson was the father of the third president and Surveyor of Albemarle County. Cf. Stephenson & McKee, Virginia in Maps, Map II-21A-D; Pedley 470, state 3.

An Essay Upon the Life, Writings, and Character, Of Dr. Jonathan Swift

Interspersed with some occasional Animadversions Upon the Remarks of a late critical Author, And upon the Observations of an anonymous Writer on those Remarks. By Deane Swift, Esq; [sic] To which is added, That Sketch of Dr. Swift’s Life, written by the Doctor himself, which was lately presented By the Author of this Essay to the University Of Dublin. London, Printed for Charles Bathurst, at the Cross-Keys, Opposite St. Dunstan’s Church in Fleetstreet [sic]. 1755. Demy 8vo; blank before half-title; Errata leaf at end; pp.[vi (unpaged)]+375+[i (publisher’s advertisements)]+53 (last page Errata)+[i (blank)]; [A]3, B - I, K - U, X -Z, Aa8, Bb4; [2]A - [2]C8, [2]D3; original blue-grey paper covered boards, cream paper spine, label; a.e. uncut. Recently re-backed with period paper in imitation of the original, and with new end-papers of period paper; original boards a little scuffed and marked; Q7 and 8, and R1, 2, 3, and 4 show some foxing to blank lower margins; S4 and S5 slit from the lower margins into text (v. note) this being repaired without the use of tissue and without loss of text; flaw in blank lower margin of 2A6; otherwise a very nice copy. The first state of text, with S4 and S5 slit for cancellation, but not cancelled, l.18 on p.263 reading ‘Dean WINTER’ in upper and lower case instead of ‘DEAN WINTER’ all in upper case. This is sufficient to distinguish the cancels, but there are other differences: the catchwords on pp.263, 264, and 265 reading respectively here ‘extreamly’, ‘VANESSA’S’, and ‘the’ rather than ‘have’, ‘HERSED’, and ‘gion’, the text being also differently arranged, the first prose paragraph on p.265 being moved in the cancel and run on after ‘concubine’ at the foot of p.263 and top of p.264. CBEL, II, p.581; Rothschild, 1989; Teerink-Scouten, 1345; ESTC, T148532: none of these noting the cancels. With the initial blank not present in the rebound Rothschild copy, but without the two added leaves of trade (R. Thyer) advertisements present there. Coincidences of the chainlines combined with faint off-printing suggest that the Errata leaf, though numbered as p.53 of the second part, was actually printed as A2 of the first part (the prelims. having, as usual, been printed last), the present A2 and A3 being actually A3 and A4, and together with the four leaves of gathering Bb completing a full sheet, whilst gathering D of the second part was printed as a separate quarter sheet. In this copy F3 is signed E3; p.19 is paged 16; p159, 195; p.209, 181; p.212, 184; p.213, 177; p.216, 180; p.217, 189; p.226, 227; p.274, 275 and p.275, 274 the first letter of the first three lines on p.164 is raised above the line: all this as in every copy we have seen. The page number to p.93 is here perfect, however, suggesting perhaps an early state, as in some other copies seen it has been badly battered. The first biography of Swift, written by Deane Swift, the father of Theophilus and the cousin of Jonathan. It treats in especial of the great satirist’s relations to his contemporaries. Included in the text are unpublished letters from Dr. Swift, and a good deal of material by others of his circle, (among this a poem by ‘Stella’). The front blank bears the contemporary inscription ‘D: N: 1755 - Read’ All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

L'Isthme de l'Acadie, Baye du Beaubassin, en Anglois Shegnekto. Environs du Fort Beausejour

Chez le Rouge, rue des Augustins, Paris 1755 - An important and very rare map that depicts the first battle of the French and Indian War in Canada The Chignecto isthmus was the location of a dividing line between the British region of Nova Scotia and the French territory. The French built Fort Beausejour on the Aulac Ridge early in 1750. The British in response constructed Fort Lawrence (called here Ft. St. Laurent) on the ridge immediately to the east across the tidal Missaquash River. This was generally accepted as the boundary between the territories, although France and England never agreed upon an official boundary. With the construction of Fort Gaspereau at Baye Verte on the shores of the Northumberland Strait, France gained effective control of travel on the Acadian isthmus. The population of the isthmus was still largely Acadian, though the English were actively trying to colonize. The Earl of Halifax had established the port town of Halifax with this in mind in 1749. The map thus establishes the context of the brief battle described below. Tensions deriving from King George's War (1745-48) had never been resolved in the region and both sides were actively trying to undermine the other. The British forces described in the account below consisted of two New England volunteer battalions and one regular British detachment. William Shirley, Governor of Massachusetts, seems to have been one of the primary provocateurs in the confrontation. "The Battle of Fort Beauséjour marked the opening of a British offensive in the French and Indian War (the North American theater of the Seven Years' War). Beginning June 3, 1755, a British army under Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Monckton staged out of nearby Fort Lawrence, besieged the small French garrison at Fort Beauséjour with the goal of opening the Isthmus of Chignecto to British control. After two weeks of siege, Louis Du Pont Duchambon de Vergor, the fort's commander, capitulated on June 16. In June 1755, Lieutenant-Colonel Monckton, commanding a fleet of 31 transports and three Royal Navy warships carrying 270 British regular troops (from the 43rd Regiment of Foot) and 2,000 New England militia, entered Cumberland Basin. The ships dropped anchor at the mouth of the Missaguash River and the British forces were able to land unopposed. Using the nearby British outpost of Fort Lawrence (about three kilometers (2 miles) to the east) as a staging area, Monckton then proceeded to the top of Aulac Ridge. The British offensive began on June 3, with Monckton carefully and methodically advancing on the French fortification from the north. When his forces were close enough on June 13, Monckton began a bombardment with 13 inch mortars. Although the commander of the fort, the Marquis Louis Du Pont Duchambon de Vergor, defied the British for two weeks, there was little the French could realistically do against the numerically superior British forces. On June 16, British mortar fire breached the walls of the fortification and badly mauled the French garrison. De Vergor had little choice but to surrender. The next day, the French abandoned nearby Fort Gaspareaux, severing communications between Acadia and Île Royale (Cape Breton Island), and leaving the British forces in control of the frontier between Nova Scotia and Acadia." (Wikipedia). The aftermath of the relatively minor siege and battle was enormous. Under the pretext of requiring unconditional allegiance to George II, the New England militia forcibly removed 14,000 Acadians from Acadia, about 75% of the French speaking population. This, known as the Great Expulsion, was perhaps the first instance in modern history of an ethnic removal. Jefferys published a version of this map, also in 1755, Shegnecto Bay. A large and particular Plan of Shegnecto Bay . and the circumjacent country; with the forts and settlements of the French, till dispossessed by the English in June 1755 : Drawn on the spot by an officer, the map dated August . (Phillips p.233). It is not clear which map came first. The

        Canada et Louisiane

Paris 1755 - First state of this important map of the eastern portion of North America, published on the eve of the French and Indian War. "Covers the eastern part of North America from James Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. Includes inset extensions of Louisiana and the present southeastern United States. Shows provinces, numerous towns and cities, forts, mines, rivers, Indian villages and tribal territory, the Great Lakes, and relief. Also includes an inset view, 'Sault du Niagara.' Color is used to identify French, Spanish, and English territorial claims. Annotated in French to show 'les pretensions des Anglois' particularly with regard to boundaries and treaties concerning Nova Scotia" (Sellers and Van Ee). The present first state was published in 1755. With the outbreak of the American Revolution engendering increasing demand for American maps, Le Rouge reworked the plate (adding the boundaries of the new States) and re-titled it Theatre de la guerre en Amérique in 1777. He then re-worked it again and published it in 1787 with the title Carte d'une partie de l'Amérique Septentrionale pour servir a l'Histoire de la dernière guerre . The present first state, however, published on the eve of the French and Indian War is scarce.
