      1755. DURANTI, Durante. Rime. viii pp., 1 f., ccxxxiv pp. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, title-vignette, portrait of Carl Emmanuel the dedicatee, portrait of the author with his coat of arms below, 9 engraved headpieces, 8 engraved tailpieces, 110 engraved historiated intitials. 4to., 283 x 187 mm, bound in contemporary Italian full vellum, brown morocco label, sprinkled edges. Brescia: Gian-Maria Rizzardi, 1755. |~||~||~||~||~| Second Edition, printed in the same year as the first, a fine copy in original condition of the poems by Count Durante Duranti of Brescia, a superbly printed work dedicated to King Carl Emmanuel III. The text is a series of eight letters, written in verse form, followed by one hundred sonnets. This is a charming piece of mid-eighteenth-century Italian printing, with a frontispiece engraved by Crivellari after Scalvini, the portrait of the author and title-vignette by Zucchi, and dedicatee's portrait engraved by Crivellari and Zucchi after Scalvini. Count Durante (1718-1780), the celebrated Brescian poet, began his studies at the University of Bologna where his poetic gifts were soon recognized. In 1750 an unhappy series of events forced him into a dual with a "man of quality" who died from the wounds inflicted on him by the count. For several years after the event Durante took refuge in the principality of Castiglione, where his family held several considerable estates. Finally he was allowed to return to Brescia, and in time the poet was received by the court of Carl Emmanuel. The literary king found Durante's talents worthy of royal patronage, and conferred upon him the Noble Order of SS. Maurice and Lazare. Durante received similar patronage from Carl Emmanuel's successor, Victor Amadeus III. This copy, like that of the Houghton Library, has engraved initials pasted over typographical ones on pp. cxx, cxxix-cxxxvii, cxli-cxlix. It also has one pasted on p. clx (apparently not present in the Houghton copy), but not on ccxvii. In very fine state. Gamba 2223.

        The History of Peter the Great, Emperor of Russia

      1755. GORDON, Alexander. The History of Peter the Great, Emperor of Russia. Two volumes. xl, 311, [1]; viii, 352, [353-376] pp. Illustrated with three engraved portraits and one fold-out map of Russia. Contains author biography, author preface, table of contents, subscriber's list, appendix, index, errata, directions to the binder, and one leaf of publisher's advertisements. 8vo. in fours, 195 x 121 mm., bound in contemporary mottled calf, five raised bands, gilt-tooling and red and black morocco title-labels on spines. Aberdeen: F. Douglas and W. Murray, 1755. |~||~||~||~| First Edition. A contemporary narrative of the life of Peter the Great, by a personal acquaintance. According to the author's biography at the beginning of the book, Alexander Gordon of Achintoul, Esq., was enlisted in the service of the Russian military after impressing Czar Peter the Great by beating off six Russian men in a fistfight. He quickly moved up the ranks, eventually achieving the status of Major General. As a result, he was either present at many of the scenes he describes, or was given an account by someone who was. As he states in his preface, the author tries to remain impartial in his biography, condemning Voltaire for his criticism of the Empress Catherine. The contents of the work go beyond what the title implies; the first two chapters (or books) are dedicated to the formation of the country and its history up to the ascendance of Peter the Great, as well as a general description of the country, including its economy and weather. The Appendix contains information about Russian dress, numismatics, taxes, weights and measures, and anecdotes of Peter the Great. The portraits depict Peter the Great, Alexander Gordon and Lieutenant General Prince Menzikoff, an important and well-favored general in the Czar's army, who introduced him to his wife Catherine. All three portraits are engraved from the original paintings. In volume two, tear to outer edge of p. 85-6, not affecting the text, p. 115-118 (conjugate leaves P2 and P3) loose, ms. fragment in black ink used as bookmark between pp. 274-75, small tear to bottom of left-most fold of map, wear to binding extremities, otherwise near fine. PROVENANCE: "Wil. Erskyne," perhaps a descendant of or one of the Erskines in the subscriber's list, with name written in black ink on head of front free endpaper.

Imperial folio (490 x 400 mm). (4),+ XXII,+ 447 pp. Title with engraved vignette. Near contemporary marbled full calf, richly gilt spine with raised bands and green title and part title labels, red edges. Spine defective at top. Garcia 1414. Furchheim p. 7. Blackmer 97. The somewhat unfortunate scholar Ottavio Antonio Bayardi (1694-1764) was forced to publish this catalogue after his failure with the "Prodromo delle antichità d'Ercolano", and when the prime minister Bernardo Tanuccio founded the Accademia Ercolanese - in the same year - Bayardi was fired from his position as sole publisher of material from the excavations. Soon he also came to be replaced by Berardo Galiani as member of the Accademia. This catalogue consists of a list of all the finds made in Herculaneum and Pompeii and it is published as a pre-catalogue to the planned large "Le antichita d'Ercolano eposte". The catalogue, however, offers only the listing and a brief description of the artefacts. The title vignette is after Camillo Paderni and engraved by Antonio Piaggio

The rare real second edition, a third edition with "second edition" in its title was published in 1757. The first was published in 1754. An English translation was published already in 1753, with only Bellicard given as author. With printed dedication to the marquis de Marigny. The "Observations" by the French architect Jérôme-Charles Bellicard (1726-86) and the famous engraver and connoisseur Charles-Nicolaus Cochin (1715-90) is an important book in the history of the excavations of Herculaneum. They visited Naples in 1750, on their Grand Tour 1749-51 together with Abel-François Poisson de Vandiéres, the marquis de Marigny (brother to madame de Pompadour), the architect Soufflot and abbé Le Blanche. Their book includes a description and a plan of the Basilica - the first published plan over Herculaneum, and a part plan of the theatre. Both these plans are based on sketches made in 1743 by Pierre Bardet de Villeneuve, head of the excavations during 1741-45, who took all his plans and drawings with him when he left Naples. The Royal ban in Naples against measurings and drawings at the excavations was intended to prevent publications like this one! The notebooks and drawings made by Bellicard during the journey are still preserved. Cochin also published a general guidebook to Italy and its art treasures

        The Art of Cookery …

      London: Printed, and sold at Mrs. Ashburn's China-Shop, the Corner of Fleet-Ditch; et al.,, 1755. The Fifth Edition with Additions. Octavo (195 × 124 mm). Contemporary calf, paper label with title in ink to the spine, raised bands framed by double gilt rules, double-fillet gilt panel to the boards, foliate edge-roll in blind. Half-title bound in. Contemporary ownership on a "Miss Barlowe" to the title page. A little rubbed, some judicious restoration at the extremities, front free endpaper renewed, single, small worm-track through the first 20 pages or so, spotting and browning, as usual, heavier front and back, remains a very good copy. The Fifth edition, the first was published in 1746, with the author's "facsimile" signature to first page of text. This is certainly not a printed facsimile, but would seem to be a case of signing "in the edition" to guarantee its authenticity at the time when Glasse was being forced to assign the copyright of her book to save herself from bankruptcy; "The commissioners of bankruptcy did not auction her stock as it was held in her daughter's name, but on 29 October 1754 the copyright of The Art of Cookery and the printed sheets of the fifth edition were sold to Andrew Miller and his conger who were to be responsible for the Art for the next fifty years" (ODNB). On first publication Glasse's book had become an immediate bestseller. A response to the rapid growth of the middle classes in the first half of the eighteenth century, it addressed the need for handbooks and manuals written for servants rather than for the châtelaine herself; "I believe I have attempted a Branch of Cookery which Nobody has yet thought worth their while to write upon: But as I have both seen, and found by Experience that the Generality of Servants are greatly wanting in that Point, therefore I have taken upon me to instruct them in the best Manner I am capable; and, dare I say, that every Servant who can but read will be capable of making a tolerable good Cook, and those who have the least Notion of Cookery, can't miss of being very good ones. If I have not wrote in the high, polite Stile, I hope I shall be forgiven; for my Intention is to instruct the lower Sort, and therefore must treat them in their own Way" (To the Reader). Despite the success of her book and royal patronage of her Covent Garden "habitmakers" Glasse struggled financially. She was discharged in 1755 following the sale of her rights in The Art of Cookery, but in June 1757 she "was consigned as a debtor to Marshalsea prison and transferred to the Fleet prison" (ODNB) the next month. No record exists of her release, but she was subsequently involved in a couple of unsuccessful publications before disappearing from sight; "Nothing is known of the last ten years of Glasse's life. There was only a brief announcement in the London Magazine and the Newcastle Courant that Mrs Hannah Glasse, sister to Sir Lancelot Allgood, had died in London on 1 September 1770. No will has been found".

VD18 12638498-001. Nicht bei Goedeke, Kosch, Jordans etc. Zum Autor vgl. cnp00393595.

        ESSAI DE PSYCHOLOGIE. Ou Considerations sur les operations de l'ame, sur l'habitude et sur l'education. Auxquelles on a ajouté des Principes philosophiques sur la cause premiere et sur son effet.

      Prima edizione. Testo francese. Cm.17,3x10,4. Pg.XLII, 390. Legatura ottocentesca in mz.pelle con titoli e fregi in oro al dorso e piatti marmorizzati. Tagli spruzzati. Fregi calcografici. Fresco esemplare, assai ben conservato. Discendente da famiglia benestante, Charles Bonnet (Ginevra, 1720 - 1793), dopo gli studi in giurisprudenza si dedicò alla professione forense, ma i suoi interessi furono rivolti principalmente alla storia naturale e alla filosofia. Fu lui, studiando la riproduzione degli afidi, a scoprire la partenogenesi, ossia la riproduzione senza fecondazione. Il presente testo, in prima edizione, costituisce il suo primo e principale studio di psicologia, ed in esso sviluppa originali spunti anticipando le teorie della psicologia biologica e della neurologia comportamentale. Ispirandosi a Newton sostiene che la conoscenza del comportamento umano e animale deriva dalla comprensione del sistema nervoso, approfondendo in maniera originale i rapporti tra psicologia e fisiologia. E' considerato uno dei padri della moderna biologia.

      xxiv, 880 pp. Large 4to, antique half-calf & marbled boards, spine gilt. St. Petersburg: Academiae Imperialis Scientiarum, 1755. First edition of Euler's second great contribution to analytical mathematics. "This is the first text-book on the differential calculus which has any claim to be regarded as complete, and it may be said that until recently many modern treatises on the subject are based on it."-Ball, A Short Account of the History of Mathematics, p. 396. "Euler developed the calculus of finite differences in the first chapters of his Institutiones calculi differentialis, and then deduced the differential calculus from it. He established a theorem on homogeneous functions, known by his name, and contributed largely to the theory of differential equations, a subject which had received the attention of I. Newton, G.W. Leibniz, and the Bernoullis, but was still undeveloped."-Cajori, A History of Mathematics, pp. 238-39. Very good copy from the library of Haskell F. Norman with bookplate.         The Ship-Builder's Assistant;

      London: Pirnted [sic.] W. and J. Mount, T. Page & Son, , 1755. or, Marine Architecture: Small quarto (199 × 146 mm). Nineteenth-century half calf on marbled boards, red morocco label to the spine, yellow edge-stain. 8 folding plates, tables to the text. A little rubbed, light browning, a few neatly inked additions to the glossary, a neat enough copy. Very good. First published in 1711, numerous changes were made to the various later editions of this popular work, the last of which appeared in 1840. Interestingly, however, the 1840 edition retained the proportions for rigging and the tables of values and scantlings of timber first printed in 1711. See Mariners Mirror,vol. 49, pp. 146-7, for W. Salisbury's detailed account of the various editions of this work: "a mixture of good practical information and rather discursive essays."
