        Canada Louisiane et Terres Angloises

Paris 1755 - Copper-engraved map, on four unjoined sheets. Large inset titled "Le Fleuve Saint-Laurent." D'Anville's four sheet map of North America after John Mitchell. This four sheet map shows North America from James Bay to Florida and as far west as the Mississippi River. The map was based in part on Mitchell's famous map of the United States which appeared earlier in the same year. D'Anville developed his version of the map with an emphasis on French influence on the area, omitting Mitchell's legend, references to English factories in the disputed trans-Allegheny area, and drew on French sources for additional details over the Mitchell map. The map provides early detail along the lower portion of the Missouri (alternately the "Pekitanoui") and the upper waters of the Mississippi. The Keweenaw peninsula is named as Kiaonan, and Isle Royale is called I. Minong. It is filled with scores of Indian tribes and villages named and located. "To illustrate the cartography of the second half of the eighteenth century, a d'Anville map is essential. He dominated not only French but all contemporary geographers. He was one of the foremost to leave blank spaces in his maps where knowledge was insufficient . His representation of the Great Lakes is superior to that of his contemporary, John Mitchell" Tooley). D'Anville's map would become the basis for numerous future mappings, most notably by Jeffereys and Sayer & Bennett. This copy with the rare fourth sheet comprising the inset of the St. Lawrence River, often found lacking due to its irregular shape. Cumming, Southeast in Early Maps 296; Kershaw, Early Printed Maps of Canada II:625; Sellers and Van Ee, Maps and Charts of North America and the West Indies 17; McCorkle, New England in Early Printed Maps 755.1; Phillips, A List of Maps of America , p.760; Tooley, "Mapping of the Great Lakes" pp. 316-317 in Tooley, The Mapping of America.

"His books lay down the principles of military sanitation and the ventilation of barracks, gaols, hospital ships, etc."

"These illustrations that rank among the best natural history engravings of the 18th century show minerals, stones, fossils, coral, birds and fish."

Serious reflections on the manifold dangers attending the use of copper vessels, and other utensils of copper and brass, in the preparations of all such solids as are designed for food to human bodies: in a letter to a friend.

London printed: and sold by M. Cooper 1755 - 4to., 32pp., complete with the half-title, preserved in old plain card covers. A fine copy. First, and only, edition: rare. Only 11 other copies located: at BL + Cambridge + Royal Soc. + Wellcome + NLS + Glasgow and Duke + Harvard + US Lib. of Medicine + Minnesota + Villanova. Wellcome V, p.497. Not in Oxford, Bitting, Vicaire or Cagle. This is a 'serious' and practical study of kitchen utensils and the risks of food poisoning. 'I need not tell you, Sir,' the author writes, 'that copper utensils are now employed in almost every kitchen in the Kingdom; copper pots, copper stew-pans, copper sauce-pans and copper tea-kettles are all in daily use among us; to which we must add, kettles, ladles, and divers other things used in cookery, made of brass . these utensils, from the very nature of the metal, throw out a poisonous matter, more or less, which mixing with our food, renders it in a greater or lesser degree pernicious'. (p.8). The author goes on to describe what happens when various typical food substances are placed in a copper pan (e.g. water, milk, vinegar, salt, butter, suet, and sugar). He further considers the usefulness of tinning the copper - good while it lasts but usually has a short effective life. 'A very short time destroys the tinning, either wholly or in part; it may be scraped off, burnt off, melted off, or scower'd off; so that our safety herein, in great measure, depends on the virtue, care, and labour of those, who preside in the kitchen, or the scullery. The eye of a watchful mistress, a notable daughter, or a staid housekeeper, is, no doubt, a good check upon uncleanly or careless servants .'. (p.14). The author further pursues his case with examples of food poisoning. One, for example, was due to a meat cooked in a pan contaminated with 'verdigrease'. 'A tradesman and his wife, not long since, unfortunately dined very plentifully on a fry; a dish which, it seems, they were very fond of .'. The results were disastrous. The author seems to be particularly concerned with the making of confectionery, confectioners he notes using exclusively untinned copper pans. 'All the matter . which heated copper can throw out, and all which so active a substance as sugar can force out, is blended with our preserved fruits and sweetmeats of every kind. Of these sweetmeats children of almost every rank and age, even infants, eat in abundance; but people of quality most of all, as they scarce ever dine without a desert.' (p.22). The 'practice of dram-drinking', the use of copper in brewing, whether in public or private brew-houses, is equally condemned. In the final part of this essay, the author makes a number of positive recommendations. Among these he recommends the further scientific study of the subject, approves the use of plate iron (which is 'light, pleasant, sweet and wholesome'), and is positive about silver. Earthen ware is particularly good - although dangerous with acids - and stone ware or china are both recommended 'for the purposes of food'.

London, c.1755 - Size: 590 x 465 mm. Trimmed a little tight at the top and bottom margins, but a nice clean copy. Uncoloured copper engraving. An attractive large chart of Hispaniola and the southern Bahamas, with title cartouche, compass roses and rhumb lines. Charles Price was a publisher, globe and instrument maker, engraver, and member of the Merchant Taylor's Company. He was apprenticed to John Seller and worked from a number of London addresses in the early years of the eighteenth century. "In partnership at various times with Jeremiah Seller, John Senex, John Maxwell and George Wildey. He was a debtor in Fleet Street Prison at the end of 1731 possibly until his death [c.1733]" (Tooley). Price apparently planned to published a maritime atlas covering the whole world, but the venture was not a success and was never completed. The British Library contains an untitled atlas containing sea charts of Britain and Europe, with this chart being the only non-European chart. It was the first wholly English atlas of American waters, and one of five books of The English Pilot. Tooley, Maps and Mapmaking,l p.61

A New Thory of The Earth, from its Original to the Consummation of All Things. Wherein The Creation of the World in Six Days, The Universal Deluge, and the General Conflagration. Are shewn to the perfectly agreeable to Reason and Philosophy.

Whiston and White London Sixth Edition 1755 - Octavo; [4],94,[2],478,[2]. 10 plates, all present, bound out of order. Contemporary full calf, corners sl bumped and worn, the spine with raised bands, contemporary black leettering piece, plain compartments. Base of spine trifle worn. Occasional scattered spots, sl vertical crease to front endpaper. Minor cracking upper joint but boards are tight. Overall a VG copy. This edition contains an appendix containing a New Theory of the Deluge, and the work is dedicated to Isaac Newton. William Whiston (9 December 1667 – 22 August 1752) was an English theologian, historian, and mathematician, a leading figure in the popularisation of the ideas of Isaac Newton. He is now probably best known for helping to instigate the Longitude Act in 1714 (and his attempts to win the rewards that it promised) and his important translations of the Antiquities of the Jews and other works by Josephus (which are still in print). He was a prominent exponent of Arianism and wrote A New Theory of the Earth.Whiston succeeded his mentor Newton as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. Having lost the position over his theological views, he spent the rest of his life as a lecturer and writer. Whiston's A New Theory of the Earth from its Original to the Consummation of All Things (1696) was an articulation of creationism and flood geology. It held that the global flood of Noah had been caused by a comet. The work obtained the praise of John Locke, who classed the author among those who, if not adding much to our knowledge, "At least bring some new things to our thoughts."[1] He was an early advocate, along with Edmond Halley, of the periodicity of comets; he also held that comets were responsible for past catastrophes in Earth's history. In 1736, he caused widespread anxiety among London's citizens when he predicted the world would end on 16 October that year because a comet would hit the earth. William Wake as Archbishop of Canterbury officially denied this prediction to calm the public. There was no consensus within the Newtonians as to how far mechanical causes could be held responsible for key events of sacred history: John Keill was at the opposite to extreme to Whiston in minimising such causes.[42] As a natural philosopher, Whiston's speculations respected no boundary with his theological views. He saw the creation of man as an intervention in the natural order. He picked up on Arthur Ashley Sykes's advice to Samuel Clarke to omit an eclipse and earthquake mentioned by Phlegon of Tralles from future editions of Clarke's Boyle lectures, these events being possibly synchronous with Christ's crucifixion. Whiston published The Testimony of Phlegon Vindicated in 1732 (wiki) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Prijs: ?975,- (incl. lijst).

Suffering the disgrace of Louis XIV he inherited from his mother, he began, after the king's refusal, in the Empire army. From 22 years after the war of the Holy League (Empire, Poland and Venice) against the Turks, he was made a major general. Its various campaigns, especially against France during the Spanish succession, against Italy and the Turks led to his being chief, then at the end of his life governor of the Netherlands. 1 Napoleon considered him one of the 7 great generals of history. Beyond the military biography of the character, the book is a political history of modern Europe very relevant.

KVK & WorldCat (2 copies, 1 lacking the Augsburg parts and the other more seriously incomplete). An extremely rare and stunning display of the vibrant graphic and topographic trade in mid-18th-century Augsburg, the main part devoted primarily to the earthquake and tsunami that desolated Lisbon and many other cities in Portugual, southwest Spain and northwest Africa on 1 November 1755. It brings together maps, plans, prospects, bird's-eye views and other views from most of the leading Augsburg print publishers of the day, bringing the destruction into sharp graphic focus, with many views, often including before and after pictures, of Lisbon, Meknes (Mequines) and Fez in Morocco. Several views show looters or others who tried to exploit the chaos hanging at the gallows. The collection goes beyond a mere record of the earthquake and tsunami, however, providing an excellent overview of Portuguese and Spanish topography in general, with many city views, plans and fortification plans. The title-page notes that the publisher can supply copies already bound ("gebunden zu bekommen"). But it also seems likely that the present copy was supplied by the publisher in its wrapper made of so-called gold brocade paper. Augsburg raised the production of this kind of decorated paper to an art in the mid-18th-century, and the present example (two whole sheets, for the front and back wrapper, printed from the same block) is a fine specimen. In very good condition, with only the spine of the wrapper somewhat tattered. A beautiful copy and the only complete copy located, of a splendid display of Augsburg prints relating to the great Lisbon earthquake and the city of Augsburg.

De ortu stratorum telluris et ratione qua corpora marina in loca Mediterranea translata sint, commentario in conventu literario philosophico mense junio lecta et approbata. [AND] Series quaestionum et assertionum ex universa philosophia.

Praha, Franciscus Ignatius Kirchner, [1755]. Small 8vo (16.4 x 9.7 cm). 56 pp. Contemporary blind, speckled boards.l Very rare work written by the Jesuit priest and mathematician Kaspar Sagner (1721-1781), and defended as a thesis by Anton Lyer. In Prague, Sagner studied philosophy (1740-1742), and theology (1747-1750). He became a teacher at the Latin school in Breslau (1744-1746). From1752-1758 and from 1766-1773 he was professor of mathematics and experimental physics in Prague. In 1759-60 he was professor of moral theology in Olomouc, and from 1761 to 1765 professor of mathematics in Madrid. The author discusses the fact that the earth is divided in distinct layers and why in the Mediterranean region "corpora marina" (i.e. fossils) have been displaced. The author refers to the biblical flood but also, for instance, to the newly formed island of Nea Kameni ("the new burnt island" in Greek) which was first observed on 23 May 1707. In the rear is a shorter paper by Sagner, titled: "Series quaestionum et assertionum ex universa philosophia", which is on logic, and various mathematical problems. The armorial bookplate of the "Karlsbader Stadt-Bibliothek - Dr Hochberger-Bibliothek" on the front paste-down, otherwise a nice clean, unmarked copy. No copies on the internet, only one auction record in the last 40 years. Neither in Von Zittel, nor in Ward & Carrozi.

        Dictionary of the English Language:

Ã¬The Most Amazing, Enduring and Endearing One-Man Feat in the Field of LexicographyîJOHNSON, Samuel. A Dictionary of the English Language: In which the words are deduced from their originals, and illustrated in their different significations by examples from the best writers. To which are prefixed, a history of the language, and an English grammar. London: Printed by W. Strahan, for J. and P. Knapton..., 1755.First edition of ìthe most amazing, enduring and endearing one-man feat in the field of lexicographyî (Printing and the Mind of Man). Two large folio volumes, tall paper copies, (16 1/2 x 10 1/4 inches; 412 x 254 mm.). Unpaginated. Text in double columns. Title-pages printed in red and black. Decorative woodcut tail-pieces.Later full tan sheep, decoratively gilt-stamped on spines with two morocco labels, gilt-stamped. Extremities rubbed, scratch to rear cover of vol. I. Some minor foxing and browning as usual. Overall, a very nice set.îBegun in 1747, and printed over five years, Johnsonís Dictionary at once put to shame every other dictionary that had ever been written and set the standard for every dictionary that has been written since. Its genius was at once acknowledged by every hand, and the first edition of two thousand copies was instantly sold out...Perhaps the greatest innovation in Johnsonís work was his consistent reliance not on earlier word-lists and dictionaries, not on his own intuition, but on English literature itselfóthe vast, wonderful treasury of words that, well chosen and properly sorted and accurately quoted, became in itself almost a dictionary of the language. Indeed, after Johnson showed the way by quoting from English literature at every turn, it was even suggested that a great dictionary might be written without definitions at allóif the quotations were plentiful enough and well enough chosen and edited. This insistence on real examples from the real language as it has been really used has informed every serious dictionary every sinceófrom Richardson and Webster to the new OEDî (The Collection of The Garden Ltd., Sothebyís New York, November 9 and 10, 1989, lot 148).Courtney & Nichol Smith, p. 54.         Four Songs in the Opera Call'd Il Demofonte Sung by Sig.ra Mingotti Price 2s: 6d. [Full score]

[London]: To be had at Sig.r De Giardini's Lodgings... At Mr. Cox's Music Shop... and at Mr. Smith's Music Shop, 1755. Very scarce. Worldcat (3 copies only, at Harvard, Cornell, and the Newberry). OCLC nos. 23856520, 80051316. RISM J586 (attributed to Niccolò Jommelli) and RISM H2248, HH 2248 (4 copies only, only one of which in the US, at Cornell, attributed to Hasse, Mingotti's name not mentioned). Not in BUC. Ward English catalogue 145. Hasse's Demofoonte, to a libretto by Pietro Metastasio, was first performed at the Hoftheater in Dresden on February 9, 1748. "Two of the published arias for Dircea (Mingotti) are from Dresden operas by Hasse, "Or che salvo" from his second Arminio (1745) and "Padre, perdona" form his first Demofoonte (1748) in which Mingotti had created the role of Creusa... I have been unable to trace the three other arias in the prints - all on Demofoonte texts - including "Se tutti i mali miei," which Burney wrongly identifies as being from Hasse's 1748 setting. Possibly they belong to Galuppi's 1749 setting for Madrid, which Mingotti might have known from her engagement there from 1751 to 1753. Apparently no score of Galuppi's opera is preserved." John H. Roberts in Opera and the Enlightenment, ed. Thomas Bauman, p. 169. Regina Mingotti (1722-1808), a German singer of Italian birth, sang in Dresden, Naples, Prague, Madrid (1751-3), Paris and London (1754-5); "in the 1756-7 and 1763-4 London seasons she took over the management of the King's Theatre together with the leader of the orchestra, Felice Giardini, and incurred much obloquy... Burney called her 'perfect mistress of her art', 'always grand' in her style though lacking in grace and softness; her practical musical intelligence, he wrote, was equal to that of any composer he had known. She was admired as an actress, particularly in the breeches roles she often sang." John Rosselli in Grove Music Online.. Folio. Light contemporary blue wrappers. 1f. (recto title, verso blank), [i] (blank), 23 pp. Engraved.

Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, small tear perfectly repaired, otherwise in good condition The engravings have been laid on canvas and framed; after a long work to repair them, they now look almost perfect. Signs of glue on verso, on recto signs of abrasions and oxidations. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle. The offer was preceded by a solemn ride of two and a half hours, a long and precise itinerary. To make it even more solemn, as per Charles II decree of the 12 of May 1691, the Greats of Spain were obliged to take part to the cortege, which wa
