A Narrative of the Mission of the United Brethren among the Delaware and Mohegan Indians, From its Commencement in the year 1740 to the Close of the Year 1808

xii+[17]+429 page with engraved frontispiece portrait, errata leaf. Octavo (8 3/8" x 5 3/8") Bound in contemporary leather with gilt lettering to spine. (Field 678; Howes H392; Sabin 31205) First edition. John Heckewelder was born in Bedford, England and came to Pennsylvania in 1754. After finishing his education, he was apprenticed to a cooper. Following a visit to Ohio with Christian F. Post, a colonial agent, in 1762 he began temporary employment in the Moravian missions at Friedenshütten and Sheshequin, Pennsylvania. In 1771, he entered upon his actual career as an evangelist to the Indians, being appointed assistant to David Zeisberger, in Ohio, where he remained for fifteen years. In 1792, at the request of the Secretary of War, he accompanied Gen. Rufus Putnam to Post Vincennes to treat with the Indians. In 1793 he was again commissioned to assist at a treaty with the Indians of the lakes. In his book, Heckewelder explained the beliefs of the Delaware (Lenape), that the creator "made the Earth and all that it contains for the common good of mankind; when he stocked the country that he gave them with plenty of game, it was not for the benefit of a few, but of all; everything was given in common to the sons of men. Whatever liveth on the land, whatsoever groweth out of the Earth, and all that is in the rivers and waters was given jointly to all and everyone is entitled to his share. From this principle hospitality flows as from its source."[1] Between 1797 and 1800 he remained mainly in Ohio, and was for a time in the civil service, being a postmaster, a justice of the peace, and an associate justice of the court of common pleas. He settled at Gnadenhütten, Ohio, in 1801, and devoted himself to the duties of his agency. In 1810 he resigned and engaged in literary pursuits in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, until his death. Heckewelder studied the languages, manners, and customs of American Indians, particularly the Delawares. While a member of the American Philosophical Society, at Philadelphia, several of his contributions were published in their transactions. He also published Account of the History, Manners, and Customs of the Indian Nations who once inhabited Pennsylvania and the Neighboring States (Philadelphia, 1818; German translation, Göttingen, 1821; French translation, Paris. 1822); Narrative of the Mission of the United Brethren among the Delawares and Mohegan Indians (Philadelphia, 1820); and a collection of Names which the Lenni Lenape or Delaware Indians gave to Rivers, Streams, and Localities within the States of Pennsylvania. New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia, with their Signification (1822). Many of his manuscripts are in the collections of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.Condition:Ink name of Wm D Morgan to top of title page; inscription regards his ownership at top of p [17] (slightly shaved); old ink note regarding Morgan, and the book, laid in.

Paris: H.L. Guerin and L.F. Delatour, 1754. In fine crisp condition.. Two volumes, quarto, with three folding plates;in contemporary French mottled calf, spines gilt in compartments with floral motifs, double labels, marbled endpapers and edges. The explorer Louis de Bougainville's first published work, and a milestone in his life. Few explorers could claim such a heady start to their careers. This quite precocious publication - Bougainville was in his early twenties when he completed the first volume - would kick-start his career and bring him wide recognition. By the time he completed the work with its second volume in 1756 he was already serving as secretary to the French ambassador in London, and was soon elected a member of the Royal Society, an unusual distinction for such a young foreigner. A great change of direction then occurred with his distinguished military and then naval careers, and his first voyage to the Falkland Islands; this was followed in 1766 by his most famous achievement, his circumnavigation, the first such French voyage, in the course of which only the Great Barrier Reef prevented his landing on Australian soil. He had specifically set out to reach "New Holland" by running west from Quiros's "Espiritu Santo", but turned away from the barrier presented by the Reef, heading north and coasting New Guinea. From the early 1750s Bougainville had studied under the mathematician and Enlightenment figure Jean le Rond d'Alembert, one of the editors of the Encyclopédie. The Traité du calcul integral, one of the earliest complete treatises on the integral calculus, reflects the influence of d'Alembert and follows on the work of l'Hôpital half a century earlier who had dealt with the infinitesimal calculus and had brought differential notation into general use in Europe. (Montucla, III p. 137).

        Poems on several Occasions.

Printed by Hamilton, Balfour and Neill., Edinburgh 1754 - [bound with:] SPENCE, [Joseph]. An Account of the Life, Character, and Poems of Mr. Blacklock; Student of Philosophy, in the University of Edinburgh. London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley, 1754, pp. 61, [3], including 3 final pages of advertisements; woodcut ornaments.[and:] [BLACKLOCK, Thomas]. Advice to the Ladies. A Satyr. [Edinburgh?]: Printed in the Year 1754, pp. 16.3 works bound together, 8vo (196 × 125 mm); contemporary Scottish spotted calf, spine gilt in compartments; rubbed, joints cracked and worn with some loss at heads of each; early inscription to initial blank leaf 'Dr Thomas Blacklocks poems' with an erasure below.First editions of three contemporary works. The blind Scots poet Blacklock had lost his sight through smallpox in infancy, but later rose to prominence in Edinburgh, enjoying the patronage of David Hume and company of Robert Burns. He met both Johnson and Boswell, and was something of a mentor to a young Walter Scott. The third item here, the 16-page Advice to the Ladies, seems to be the poet's rarest work. It appeared anonymously and is still not attributed to Blacklock by ESTC (which locates 6 copies) but is generally accepted as his, a fact underlined by its presence in this small collection. The Oxford DNB notes that while Blacklock wrote many satires throughout his life, they were usually consigned to the flames. This is a rare exception, published during his lifetime. Some of Blacklock's poems were published as a collection as early as 1746, but the Poems on Several Occasions is the text that was most often reprinted. The Life, by Spence, the Oxford's Professor of Poetry is uncommon in the original, separate issue found here. 8vo (195 × 118 mm), pp. xvi, 181, [1], with half-title. [ESTC lists copies of Advice to the Ladies at Bodley, Mitchell Library (Glasgow), Cornell, Library Company of Philadelphia, Newberry and Yale.] [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Please notify before visiting to see a book. Prices are excl. VAT/TVA (only Switzerland) & postage.

Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, small tear perfectly repaired, otherwise in good condition The engravings have been laid on canvas and framed; after a long work to repair them, they now look almost perfect. Signs of glue on verso, on recto signs of abrasions and oxidations. Chinea literally means white female mule, the one the Kings of Spain offered every year to the Pope as a solemn payment of the income of the Kingdome of Naples. The horse, duly trained, knelt in front of the Pope and to offer him a silver vase with money inside, that was fastened to its saddle. The offer was preceded by a solemn ride of two and a half hours, a long and precise itinerary. To make it even more solemn, as per Charles II decree of the 12 of May 1691, the Greats of Spain were obliged to take part to the cortege, which was

INED, 3573). Très bon exemplaire, frais, bien relié. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Heures Nouvelles Contenant Le Petit Office... Dedies a Tres illustre, Tres Populaire et ttres Vertueuse Dame La Duchesse D'Aiguillon Par Son Tres Humble... Serviteur Claude Gaignol

(12.5x19cm) [8] ff 118 [2] Eighteenth century devotional manuscript dedicated to the Duchesse D'Aiguillon, Louise-Felicite de Brehan, who became Duchess when her husband the General and later Secretary of State for War, Emmanuel-Armand De Vignerot Plessis, assumed the Dukedom in 1750. Bound in crimson sheepskin with elaborate gilt decoration and all edges gilt, old adhesive marks to the upper cover; pink silk endpapers with an eighteenth century manuscript bookplate of 'Pelzi Delvev[?]' and on the following blank the armorial bookplate of the early nineteenth century collector Henri-Auguste Brolemann of Lyon (collection dispersed Sotheby's 1926 - later sold at Christies, 22 June 1983, Lot 145). The manuscript is written recto and verso on Dutch 'Blauw' watermarked paper with half a dozen engravings by Claude Duflos after Charles Le Brun tipped in. Written in a mixture of black, blue and gold for initial words, the manuscript is in French and Latin, foliated throughout with each page of text contained within a double ruled panel. The text concludes with a two page Table. This example of a manuscript books of hours is relatively late but conforms to the eighteenth century pattern of dedicating the book to a prominent figure. In this case the Duchesse D'Aiguillon was just reaching the zenith of her influence at the court of Louis XV despite the hostility between her husband and the King who had contrived to steal the young Plessis' lover Marie Anne by sending the young man off on a series of designedly lethal military adventures. Fortunately for the future Duchesse the young man survived the ideal and had a distinguished career which culminated in his assuming the role of Foreign Secretary.

The Philosophical Works of the late Right Honorable Henry St John, Lord Viscount Bolingbroke, in Five Volumes

David Mallet, London 1754 - 1754 (first collected octavo edition). Octavo, five volumes; early full polished calf with gilt morocco title-labels on the spines; joints starting to crack, but all of them are very firm; endpapers lightly tanned around the edges by the leather; trifling signs of use and age; an excellent set. Each volume contains the armorial bookplate of A.R. Downer, Sir Alexander 'Alick' Russell Downer (1910-1981), politician and diplomat. He was the Minister for Immigration under Menzies from 1958, and the Australian High Commissioner in London from 1963 to 1972. Henry St John, '1st Viscount Bolingbroke (1678-1751) was an English politician, government official and political philosopher. He was a leader of the Tories, and supported the Church of England politically despite his anti-religious views and opposition to theology. In 1715 he supported the Jacobite rebellion of 1715 which sought to overthrow the new king George I. Escaping to France he became foreign minister for the Pretender. He was attainted for treason, but reversed course and was allowed to return to England in 1723. He is best known as the philosopher of the Country Party' (Wikipedia). The 'Dictionary of National Biography' bears all this out, and more, and has this to say about his works: 'Bolingbroke's philosophical works were published after the deist controversy in England had lost much of its novelty. . . [His] works excited only a momentary attention, and are too fragmentary and discursive to be of much value. . . Finally, in 1754, Mallet published the collected works . . . which add "Substance of some Letters written originally in French about 1720, to M. de Pouilly"; "A Letter occasioned by one of Archbishop Tillotson's Sermons"; "[Four] Essays addressed to Alexander Pope"; "Fragments or Minutes of Essays" . . . which, according to Mallet, were sent to Pope as written. This edition was the gun charged against Christianity of Dr. Johnson's famous comment'. Please use the 'Ask Bookseller a Question' link below to confirm availability and postage charges.         DES HIMMLISCHEN SALOMONS ERQUICKLICHES LIEBES-MAHL; ODER: HEILIGE VORBEREITUNG ZUM TISCHE DES HERRN. ["HOLY PREPARATION FOR THE LORD'S TABLE"]

Ulm: Daniel Bartholomäi, 1754. Intended to prepare the worshipper to receive Holy Communion, this little book of devotions is presented in a very attractive silver binding from one of the most distinguished collections of books ever assembled. The flourishes and flowers on lovely frames here are engraved in such deep relief that they give a filigree effect, and the Virtues (Temperance, Hope, and Justice on the upper cover, Charity, Faith, and Prudence on the lower) have a whimsical charm. Our artisan has combined classical and Christian iconography in his representations, showing, for example, Prudence in the garb of Athena, goddess of wisdom; Hope with an anchor and a raptor-like bird; Faith with a lamb rather than the usual cross; and Temperance improbably pouring liquid from an urn into a chalice--all with the columns, arcades, and pedestals of classical architecture in the background. The most ambitious and successful English book collector of fine bindings in the 20th century, our previous owner J. R. Abbey (1894-1969) was a scholarly bibliophile whose copies are consistently found in the best obtainable condition. He was one of the few discerning collectors to purchase silver bindings in any quantity, and, as detailed by J. R. Hayward in "Silver Bindings in the J. R. Abbey Collection," he put together an impressive group of specimens dating from the 16th through the 18th centuries.. 162 x 80 mm. (6 1/2 x 3"). 18 p.l., 407, [9] pp. A LOVELY CONTEMPORARY GERMAN SILVER BINDING OVER BLACK SHARKSKIN, covers with ornate frame in the Rococo style, with engraved vignettes of the Virtues (three to each side) nestled among a tangle of floral vines and flourishes, silver spine elements (with simpler floral decoration) at top and bottom above the unadorned sharkskin spine (these elements perhaps slightly later), two clasps at fore edge, each featuring a cherub surrounded by floral sprays, patterned pastedowns, all edges gilt. In a (slightly worn) russet buckram clamshell box, with the green morocco label of John Roland Abbey on upper cover, matching title label on spine, and yellow paper library label marked "JA 7343" on tail edge. With five engraved plates of biblical scenes. Front free endpaper with printed label of the National Exhibition of Works of Art, Leeds, 1868, signed in ink by C. Butler, Esq. Sotheby's "Silver and Enamel Bindings" 10 May 1985, lot 27. Four tiny holes to sharkskin covers, hinge open at )(3 and )(12, half a dozen gatherings a little proud, occasional faint marginal stains, otherwise an excellent copy, the silver unmarred and glistening, the text clean and fresh, and the binding entirely solid.Intended to prepare the worshipper to receive Holy Communion, this little book of devotions is presented in a very attractive silver binding from one of the most distinguished collections of books ever assembled. R. Abbey Collection," he put together an impressive group of specimens dating from the 16th through the 18th centuries.

Wellcome III, 356.
