(Cf. Hartig et Soboul, p. 54. J.-M. Racault, p. 265). Cette édition en 113 p. est rare. Elle manque à la BnF. Le Rouge, George Louis
Paris: 1753. Condition: Very Good. Paris. Very Good. 1753. Map. An engraved map of North and South America at the middle of the 18th century, with outline coloring. Some creasing at center fold, several short tears and one 6" tear from the lower edge into an ocean portion, neatly repaired. The map contains a table at the lower left and further notes at the lower right, with a brightly colored and ornate title illustration. Designed by George LeRouge, Louis XV's royal cartographer, the map has a title dated 1746, but is from 1753. The California coast is delineated up to Cap Mendocin, where pure speculation takes over. Alaska and its relationship to the mainland are just an indistinct guess. A Riv. De Louest spans the continent of North America. Collector Warren Heckrotte points out that "In North Pacific Chirikof's voyage is shown and in North America the presumed waterway discovered by De Fonte's. This material was added in 1753, not with the original engraving. This map and Le Rouge's 1744 world map have been pointed out as being the first cartographic representation of the Bering and Chirikof Expedition of 1742, and of the De Fonte voyage. This material was added in 1753; these maps have no priority." Chaplet watermark with countermark, Heawood 239. Wroth, Cartography of the Pacific, 92. P-LG 2720, 4286, 5974. Heckrotte and Dahl, TMC#93, Sept. 1993.; 19 1/4" x 25".

With the bookplate of Thomas Chilcott, the organist of Bath in 1757 to all volumes. Chilcot was an English organist and composer. Aaron Hill was an English dramatist who was a perfectionist when it came to his writings. Some believed that his polished nature lead to a lack in spontaneity with his dramatic works. He famously had some controversy with Alexander Pope after he wrote several satiric lines on him. This then meant that Hill was referenced in Pope's 'Dunciad' which fuelled the controversy. Hill managed the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane when he was 24 years old. Whilst doing so he staged the premier of George Frideric Handel's 'Rinaldo'. CLAYTON, ROBERT (EDITOR)
, . . STCN (1 copy); WorldCat (3 copies); not in Tiele, Bibl. Rare Dutch translation of a narrative describing a journey from Cairo to Mount Sinai and back, with an account of the famous "Valley of Inscriptions" (Wadi Mukattab). It was based on a manuscript by a missionary of the Sacred Congregation of the Propaganda Fide and edited and translated into English by Robert Clayton, who first published it in 1753 as Journal from Grand Cairo to Mount Sinai and back again. With the publication Clayton had hoped to persuade the Society of Antiquaries to send an expedition to Wadi Mukattab to study the inscriptions more closely. He believed them to be an early form of Hebrew, but in fact they were mostly made by Nabateans. Appended to the narrative is an account of Egyptian mythology. Quire A nearly detached, some faint water stains, front hinge weak, binding shows some wear, otherwise in good condition.

FIRST EDITION 1753, 4to, approximately 260 x 205 mm, 10¼ x 8 inches, engraved frontispiece (Columbus Breaking the Egg - see below), title vignette, 2 large folding plates dated March 5th 1753, pages: xxii, (4), 1-153, (3 - Catalogue of Hogarth prints for sale), bound in full panelled speckled calf, narrow gilt patterned border plus blind decoration to the panels, gilt decorated raised bands, richly gilt in compartments, gilt lettered red morocco label, edges speckled red, new endpapers. Frontispiece slightly trimmed in upper margin and inserted on a tab, neat early signature to top margin of title page, very few fox spots here and there, mainly on pages next to folding plates, rear of plates a little dusty. Plate 1: tiny split at foot of 1 fold, small split to the middle of a horizontal fold, both neatly repaired with white linen binder's tape, Plate 2: righthand margin trimmed off, the other margins slightly foxed. A very good clean copy. Columbus Breaking the Egg is a 1752 engraving by Hogarth which was issued as the subscription ticket for his treatise on art, The Analysis of Beauty. It depicts an apocryphal tale (the "Egg of Columbus") concerning Christopher Columbus's response to detractors of his discovery of the New World. Hogarth uses the story as a parallel to what he considered his own discoveries in art. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTH … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cooper, Samuel
Boston: Printed by J. Draper, 1753. [2], 38, [2 blanks] pp. Lacking the half title, disbound. Else Very Good. "For many years pastor of the Brattle Street Church, and later ardent defender of the rights of the colonists" [Streeter Sale 684], Cooper was an intimate friend of John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. This is one of only "a small number of sermons and miscellaneous pamphlets" that he wrote [DAB]. Cooper's sermon opens a window on mid-18th century American views of charity and self-help. Relying on biblical sources, he argues that charitable enterprises are public ones. A charitable person is a "Patriot- his Bosom glows with Love to his Country...He forms Designs for enlarging the Wealth and Power of his Country, by enlarging it's [sic] commerce...and by introducing and encouraging the most useful Arts and Manufactures." Avoiding pursuits that will encourage the "Wages of Idleness," he knows "that nothing but Industry, and a full Employment of such as have Ability to Work, can make Plenty and Happiness circulate thro' a whole Community." The Society has provided an excellent example of charity, by "setting up the Linnen Manufacture." Evans 6984. Rink 3268.
