HUME, David.
London: A. Millar (vols. I-III); Edinburgh: A. Kincaid and A. Donaldson (vols. I and IV), & R. Fleming (vol. IV), 1753. London: A. Millar (vols. I-III); Edinburgh: A. Kincaid and A. Donaldson (vols. I and IV), & R. Fleming (vol. IV),, 1753, 1750, 1753, 1752. 4 volumes, duodecimo (159 x 99m). Contemporary calf, spines numbered in gilt. Light chipping at spine ends and minor wear to tips. A very nice, unrestored set. An attractive set of Hume's Essays and Treatises. Produced by reissuing and reprinting earlier separate editions in a new collected format, Essays and Treatises is a bibliographical nightmare at the best of times, produced by the "resetting of all separate volumes previously issued, the reissue of the earlier volumes with cancel titles and, where the cancels were not prepared in sufficient numbers, the further reissue of certain volumes with original titles still intact" (Todd p. 195). The present set would appear to be an unrecorded issue (the binding has similarities to trade bindings of the period), or the result of a contemporary owner compiling it himself, volumes 2 and 4 being without the general title pages of the published collected edition. This set is comprised of the following volumes: Vol. I: Essays Moral and Political. Fourth edition of 1753. Matches Todd issue a. Vol. II: Philosophical Essays. Second edition, first issue of 1750. Does not conform to Todd, who calls for later issues of the edition with a new title page dated 1753, or the third edition of 1756. ESTC calls for a terminal errata leaf, here not present. Vol. III: An Enquiry Concernin … [Click Below for Full Description]

1753. [] ~ WITH EXTENSIVE MANUSCRIPT HISTORY OF ST. EDMUNDS CHURCH [SALISBURY] The History and Antiquities of St. Edmund's Church Salisbury [s.i.]. [s.n.], [s.d.], . . Manuscript on paper. [22] leaves. [Bound after:] PRICE, Francis. A series Of particular and useful observations, Made with great Diligence and Care, upon that admirable structure, the Cathedral-Church of Salisbury... London. Printed by C. and J. Ackers...And Sold by R. Baldwin, 1753. First edition. [14], v, [1], 78pp. With 14 engraved plates (one of which folding) and a list of subscribers. Without terminal advertisement leaf. ESTC T93633. Quarto. Contemporary half-calf, marbled boards, contrasting black morocco lettering-piece. Rubbed, slight loss to head and foot of spine, splitting to joints. Manuscript annotation (apparently a copy from 'Bentham's Ely, p:38') to recto of FFEP, internally clean and crisp. From the WIltshire library of the Eyre family, at Warrens, Bramshaw, recently dispersed, without any evidence of such. Bound after Francis Price's definitive architectural study of Salisbury Cathedral in this volume appears to be a largely unpublished, but frustratingly anonymous, late eighteenth-century manuscript history of the thirteenth-century St. Edmund's Church, Salisbury. The manuscript commences with a sketch, the only illustration within the work, of the 'conventual seal of the College of St. Edmund', and continues with considerable detail of seventeenth and eighteenth-century events and benefactions (including 'Dr. Stephens, Organist of the Cathedral' who 'made an offer to the parish of an Orga … [Click Below for Full Description]

Text very little browned, occasional very minor spotting, bifolio A6/7 in vol. IV detached, endpapers browned in outer margins from binders glue, slightly offsetting to title- and final pages, otherwisp crisp and clean throughout. II (1756) and IV (1754): 3rd edition, vol. III (1753): 2nd edition. With almost every new edition new essays were added by Hume. The compilation of essays in a cheap duodecimo format, put together by Andrew Millar, included Hume's most important works to date, the Philosophical Essays, the Enquiry concerning Morals, the Essays Moral and Political and Political Discourses. The effect was to "draw attention for the first time to his philosophy in a format that which was both accessible and calculated to encourage sales" (ODNB). Wood's work was of profound import for architects in Georgian Britain, and may well prove to be of renewed importance in the years ahead, as Palmyra was reduced virtually to rubble by Islamic State forces in August 2015. His ‘English Dispensatory’ (1721), of which a fourth edition appeared in 1722 and a twelfth in 1749, contains a complete account of the materia medica and of therapeutics, and many of the prescriptions contained in it were long popular.
