The binomial system which Linné extended to all the kingdoms of nature in the 10th edition of his Systema Naturae (1758-59) was first employed in this work (see Soulsby). The subjects of the plates include minerals, sea stars, petrified wood, and coral which Tessin had collected and stored in his castle at Åkerö, Sweden. Most of the plates were engraved by Per Gustaf Floding. Tessin was a great friend of Linné and used his influence to help the botanist establish his reputation. AUCTION CATALOGUE: BOZE)
1753. Engraved headpiece. 1 p.l., x, 552 pp. 8vo, cont. mottled sheep (some rubbing & minor wear), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: G. Martin et al., 1753. The posthumously issued inventory catalogue - prepared for an en bloc sale - of the famous collection formed by Claude Gros de Boze (1680-1753), the renowned academician and savant. It was an excellent library, notable for its block books and incunabula, including a Gutenberg Bible (lot 18); this catalogue provides the best idea of its contents. Following the publication of the catalogue, two collectors - Boutin and Cotte - purchased the whole library, retaining the books which they desired for their own collections and selling certain precious incunabula to Gaignat. They then turned over the remainder to Gabriel Martin to sell by auction the following year. Our copy of the 1753 catalogue, which Archer Taylor considered to be one of Gabriel Martin's best efforts, contains valuations in a contemporary hand alongside each lot. Fine copy. ❧ Brunet, I, 1642. GRAY, Thomas (1716-1771)
London: Printed for R. Dodsley, in Pall Mall, MDCCLIII [1753]. First Edition. Third State (or edition) of this "landmark in the history of English book-illustration." (Hazen) Imperial quarto ( cut to resemble a folio, for which it is often mistaken): [8]pp,35,[1]ff, with six full-page copper-engraved plates, 13 half-page head- and tail-vignettes, and 6 engraved initials, all by Johann Sebastian Muller and Charles Grignion after drawings by Richard Bentley. (Each poem has a frontispiece, headpiece, initial letter, and tailpiece. Poems printed and foliated on rectos only, 'Explanation of the prints' by Horace Walpole printed on both recto and verso). According to Hazen, "There are three distinct editions dated 1753, but since the wording on the title-page is identical in all three and all three have been sold as first editions, it seems easier to describe the editions and discriminate among them as if they were different states. . . . Discrimination between the other [second and third] editions dated 1753 is simple enough, but their order is not certainly established. . . . The third edition seems to be distinctly less common {calling copies of the first two editions "plentiful"]." Our copy is Hazen's "distinctly less common" third, with "Designs, &c." on half-title; no exclamation marks (though there are semicolons) in the rows of printer's flowers on the third and fourth pages of "Explanation of the prints"; and the letter "p" printed properly throughout p. 26. Raimondo Di Sangro
Per Salzano e Castaldo, Naples, 1753. Supplica Di Raimondo Di Sangro Principe Di S. Severo Umiliata Alla Santita' Di Benedetto XIV Pontefice Massimo in Difesa e Rischiarimento Della Sua Lettera Apologetica Sul Proposito de' Quipu de' Peruani. Per Salzano e Castaldo, Napoli, 1753. 4to, (12), 224, half title, title page printed in red and black, red engraved vignette of a sphinx by Antonio Bandi; rebound in later vellum, with gilt title and author on the spine ("Raimondo di Sangro - Supplica"), with ample margins. First Edition of Sangro's rare defense against charges of heresy. His earlier work, Lettera Apologetica (1750), analyzed the ancient Peruvian system of quipu, or talking knots, used as recording devices. A quipu usually consisted of colored, spun, and plied thread or strings from llama or alpaca hair. The cords contained numeric and other values encoded by knots in base ten positional system. Quipus might have just a few or up to 2000 cords. The Pope had accused Sangro of heresy as a result of this work, and Sangro here defends himself, arguing that there was no subversive intent in his Lettera. He states that it was merely an inoffensive bit of pedantry, written to support the possibility that Mme. De Graffigny's best-selling novel, Lettres d'une Peruvienne, could have been translated from the quipu diary of an Inca princess. He traces the history of quipu, giving as examples such varied sources as the ancient sculpture of Greece and Rome, Mohammed, the Talmud, Swift, Spinoza and Acosta. Long the center of controversy, Sangro destroyed his own scientific archive be … [Click Below for Full Description]

P. Le Laboureur
[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

GRAY, Thomas (1716-1771)
London: R. Dodsley, 1753. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow. 4to in half-sheets (370 x 268 mm). Each leaf printed on one side only. Half-title reading "Drawings, &c." Engraved title vignette, 6 engraved plates, 12 head- and tail-pieces, and 6 historiated initials by J.S. Müller and C. Grignion after Bentley. Contemporary English half deerskin, marbled boards. Binding with some minor wear; some occasional pale spotting. Provenance: John Boyle (1707-1762), 5th Earl of Orrery (bookplate); 1743 Orrery inscription on pastedown; Almeric Hugh Paget (1861-1949), 1st Baron Queenborough (bookplate); purchased from Bernard Quaritch, 1974. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the half-title reading "Drawings, &c," of this finely-illustrated volume. The plates are by Richard Bentley (1708-1782), a close friend of Walpole's, and are described as "an extraordinary and skilful combination of classical river gods, rococo lightness, and Strawberry Hill Gothic" (Hammelmann and Boase, Book Illustrators in 18th Century England, 1975, p. 14). It was at Gray's insistence that the word "Designs" preceded "Poems" in the title, reflecting his feeling that the text played a subordinate part. The Elegy is the final poem, and "A Long Story" is printed here for the first time. Hazen, Horace Walpole 42; Northup 178; Ray English, p. 4; Rothschild 1061; Stokes, p. 43.
