[8], [xxxvi], 104 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. First edition in French of a book originally published in English in 1750, describing "how diamonds and pearls can be evaluated on the basis of the factors of size (or weight) and style of cut, with allowances being made in the case of diamonds where cut stones depart from the 'ideal' proportions that were accepted as standard in Jeffries' time. These proportions are radically different from those now considered acceptable because they were based less on the production of maximum brilliance than on retention of the greatest amount of weight from the cutting of a typical octahedral diamond crystal" (Sinkankas). The plates show the proportions and facet patterns cut diamond, as well as rose cut gems. Sinkankas 3198 Recent full dark calf, red morocco spine label. Fine With 10 engraved plates. WOLSON (WILSON), Thomas.
, . . STCN (1 copy & 1 of the 2nd ed.); WorldCat (4 other copies). Third edition of the very rare Dutch translation a work on freemasonry by the former freemason Thomas Wolson, revealing the secrets of the masonry rites and rituals. Wolson starts with the origin and history of the brotherhood, and narrates his own experiences as a freemason: the inauguration oaths and rituals, speeches by other freemasons, meals at lodges etc. Of particular interest are Wolson's descriptions and illustrations of various (secret) symbols, the freemason's alphabet, the attributes which can be found in a lodg and the interior of the temple. Instead of depicting the freemasonry of its day, the illustrations curiously enough formed the origin and the basis for actual and practical use of the alphabet and several ceremonies in the following centuries.Paper wrappers damaged on spine and corners dog-eared. Many leaves dog-eared, edges somewhat frayed, and some occasional stains. Overall a good copy, wholly untrimmed.

The binomial system which Linné extended to all the kingdoms of nature in the 10th edition of his Systema Naturae (1758-59) was first employed in this work (see Soulsby). The subjects of the plates include minerals, sea stars, petrified wood, and coral which Tessin had collected and stored in his castle at Åkerö, Sweden. Most of the plates were engraved by Per Gustaf Floding. Tessin was a great friend of Linné and used his influence to help the botanist establish his reputation. In appreciation, Linné dedicated many of his books to either Tessin or his wife. Finally, Linné prepared this catalog of his benefactor's collection. AUCTION CATALOGUE: BOZE)
1753. Engraved headpiece. 1 p.l., x, 552 pp. 8vo, cont. mottled sheep (some rubbing & minor wear), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: G. Martin et al., 1753. The posthumously issued inventory catalogue - prepared for an en bloc sale - of the famous collection formed by Claude Gros de Boze (1680-1753), the renowned academician and savant. It was an excellent library, notable for its block books and incunabula, including a Gutenberg Bible (lot 18); this catalogue provides the best idea of its contents. Following the publication of the catalogue, two collectors - Boutin and Cotte - purchased the whole library, retaining the books which they desired for their own collections and selling certain precious incunabula to Gaignat. They then turned over the remainder to Gabriel Martin to sell by auction the following year. Our copy of the 1753 catalogue, which Archer Taylor considered to be one of Gabriel Martin's best efforts, contains valuations in a contemporary hand alongside each lot. Fine copy. ❧ Brunet, I, 1642. GRAY, Thomas (1716-1771)
London: Printed for R. Dodsley, in Pall Mall, MDCCLIII [1753]. First Edition. Third State (or edition) of this "landmark in the history of English book-illustration." (Hazen) Imperial quarto ( cut to resemble a folio, for which it is often mistaken): [8]pp,35,[1]ff, with six full-page copper-engraved plates, 13 half-page head- and tail-vignettes, and 6 engraved initials, all by Johann Sebastian Muller and Charles Grignion after drawings by Richard Bentley. (Each poem has a frontispiece, headpiece, initial letter, and tailpiece. Poems printed and foliated on rectos only, 'Explanation of the prints' by Horace Walpole printed on both recto and verso). According to Hazen, "There are three distinct editions dated 1753, but since the wording on the title-page is identical in all three and all three have been sold as first editions, it seems easier to describe the editions and discriminate among them as if they were different states. . . . Discrimination between the other [second and third] editions dated 1753 is simple enough, but their order is not certainly established. . . . The third edition seems to be distinctly less common {calling copies of the first two editions "plentiful"]." Our copy is Hazen's "distinctly less common" third, with "Designs, &c." on half-title; no exclamation marks (though there are semicolons) in the rows of printer's flowers on the third and fourth pages of "Explanation of the prints"; and the letter "p" printed properly throughout p. 26. GRAY, Thomas (1716-1771)
London: Printed for R. Dodsley, in Pall Mall, 1753. First Edition. Vellum. Fine. 26. Elegantly bound in recent vellum over boards, flat spine lettered in blind, covers with decorative panel role i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Raimondo Di Sangro
Per Salzano e Castaldo, Naples, 1753. Supplica Di Raimondo Di Sangro Principe Di S. Severo Umiliata Alla Santita' Di Benedetto XIV Pontefice Massimo in Difesa e Rischiarimento Della Sua Lettera Apologetica Sul Proposito de' Quipu de' Peruani. Per Salzano e Castaldo, Napoli, 1753. 4to, (12), 224, half title, title page printed in red and black, red engraved vignette of a sphinx by Antonio Bandi; rebound in later vellum, with gilt title and author on the spine ("Raimondo di Sangro - Supplica"), with ample margins. First Edition of Sangro's rare defense against charges of heresy. His earlier work, Lettera Apologetica (1750), analyzed the ancient Peruvian system of quipu, or talking knots, used as recording devices. A quipu usually consisted of colored, spun, and plied thread or strings from llama or alpaca hair. The cords contained numeric and other values encoded by knots in base ten positional system. Quipus might have just a few or up to 2000 cords. The Pope had accused Sangro of heresy as a result of this work, and Sangro here defends himself, arguing that there was no subversive intent in his Lettera. He states that it was merely an inoffensive bit of pedantry, written to support the possibility that Mme. De Graffigny's best-selling novel, Lettres d'une Peruvienne, could have been translated from the quipu diary of an Inca princess. He traces the history of quipu, giving as examples such varied sources as the ancient sculpture of Greece and Rome, Mohammed, the Talmud, Swift, Spinoza and Acosta. Long the center of controversy, Sangro destroyed his own scientific archive be … [Click Below for Full Description]
