TIRION, Isaak (publisher)
Isaak Tirion, Amsterdam 1753 - Handcoloured map measuring 360 x 490 mm. (sheet size); mounted, fine. A colourful and attractive eighteenth-century Dutch map of the Old World, Africa, Asia and Australasia. Interestingly, it depicts the Australian continent connected to the landmass of New Guinea - an archaism given that Abel Tasman proved the two lands distinct and separate in 1643, some 110 years prior to the publication of this map. Ironically, a large river flowing from the deep interior of the continent into the Gulf of Carpenteria is named 'Abel Tasman's R.' Also discovered and named by Tasman, Van Diemen's land (being present-day Tasmania) is also notably absent and the entire south-eastern mass of the continent is approximated in dotted lines stretching to the extreme south. As was conventional of the era, present day Western Australia is labelled New Holland, and the landfalls of principal eighteenth-century Dutch voyagers are noted. The Amsterdam based publisher Isaak Tirion (1705-1769) is known to have produced books, charts and maps for the Dutch mercantile elite. Tirion was primarily a cartographic publisher, who issued several lavish atlases as well as smaller geographical guides (literally 'Hand Atlas'), from which this attractive map is derived. During his prolific career Tirion was associated with the Dutch East India Company; in 1757 Willem Udemans, a shipwright and director of the VOC shipyard at Middelburg commissioned Tirion to print a treatise on naval architecture. He also published a Dutch language edition of Commodore Anson's circumnavigation in 1749, … [Click Below for Full Description]

RAMSAY Michel Andre
S. l. (tip.

[Click Below for Full Description]

1753. In-4 (26 cm) (2) III (1) 73 (5) XI c. (di tav.). Red printed firstpage. XVI 125 (3) (1) XXXIX c. (carte di tav. incise, 5 ripiegate). Full leather. ELLIS, JOHN (1710?-1776), naturalist, whom Linnæus termed a 'bright star of natural history' and 'the main support of natural history in England,' was born in Ireland about 1710. This is admitted by Sir J. E. Smith (Linnæan Correspondence, i. 79), in correction of his previous statement in Rees's 'Encyclopædia' that Ellis was a native of London. Ellis was in business as a merchant in London, with, it is stated, but little success, until in 1764 he obtained the appointment of agent for West Florida, to which was added in 1770 the agency for Dominica. This brought him many correspondents, and he used his opportunities to import various American seeds. In 1754 he became a fellow of the Royal Society, and in the following year established his reputation as one of the most acute observers of his time by the publication of 'An Essay towards the Natural History of the Corallines,' London, 4to. This work was translated into French in the following year; and though his views were opposed by Dr. Job Baster and but imperfectly comprehended by Linnæus, he established by it the animal nature of this group of organisms. In 1768 the Copley medal of the Royal Society was awarded to Ellis for these researches. In 1770 he published 'Directions for bringing over Seeds and Plants from the East Indies. ... To which is added the figure and description of a new sensitive plant called Dionæa muscipula,' in which he accurately describes the mechan … [Click Below for Full Description]

Errata finale. Qualche leggera fioritura. Bellissimo esemplare. [Click Below for Full Description]
