BELLIN, Jacques Nicolas.
Paris: , 1753. Size: 222 x 365 mm. Copper engraving. Hand coloured. Very good condition. Attractive map of the Strait of Magellan. Bellin was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French navy upon the creation of France's hydrographic office, the Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine. As befits a maritime chart, all place names and general information is coastal, and there is no real attempt to engrave anything of note inland of the coastal areas. Over a 50-year career, he produced a large number of maps and charts. The accuracy of Bellin's charts ensured that they were in use for many years.

Hall (Joseph)
Very Good +. Oxford, printed for R. Clements, 1753. In-12, [ii; xii; half-title, verso blank; prologue; pages 13 -108; 2 final blanks]. Brackets drawn on a few lines on pages 55 and 67. Complete. Contemporary calf with gilt decoration, marbled end-papers. The first three books of tooth-lesse satires, attacking institutions, were published in 1597, with reprints in 1598 and 1602, and the last three of byting satires, attacking individuals under pseudonyms which were probably no disguise to Halls contemporaries, in 1598 and 1599. Hall claimed these were the first satires in the English language to have taken Juvenal for a model. They gave much offense, and an attempt was made to have them all burned. The British Library copy of this title has a manuscript note saying the editor of this (1753) edition was William Thompson of Queens College, Oxford. Bookplates of Frances (with coronet and shelf mark) and Stuart Bennett. Ownership signature of Sam. Gillam. Eighteenth century mottled calf, marbled endpapers.

Leonard Euler
1753 - Leonard Euler. Mappa Geograph: Circuli Westphalici Rhenani Superioris Belgii Foederati at Catholici ad Emendatiora Exemplaria Adhuc Edita Jussu. 1753. *** A hand colored copperplate engraving. This map is from the rare 1753 Paris edition of Euler's Atlas. Shown is the present-day Netherlands, Flanders, and a large portion of Germany. This region experienced political and economic turmoil during the 1700's which resulted in shifting alliances and political boundaries. Clearly depicted are mountains, rivers, lakes, forests, geographical and coastal features, political boundaries, cities, and principal towns. Many interesting details. With a proprietary coat-of arms stamp in upper left of image. Decorative cartouche and distance scales. *** Leonard Euler (pronounced oiler) was born in Basil in 1707. He was a Swiss mathematician, physicist, astronomer, logician, cartographer, etc., basically a Renaissance man in the sciences. Only known to few is the fact that he produced an atlas titled ATLAS GEOGRAPHICUS that was published in several editions and locations. *** Crisp, clean impression with bright colors, blank verso. Light to moderate soil and stain in margins. One center vertical fold, as issued. One faint crease in upper portion of map. *** The sheet is 13.75 inches high by 16.5 inches
