FRANKLIN, BENJAMIN. - [THE KITE-LETTER - RECORDING THE MOST FAMOUS ELECTRICAL EXPERIMENT]
London, C. Davis, 1753. 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Philosophical Transactions", vol. 47. Including title-page of volume. Title-page with repair to inner margin. Pp. 289-91; pp. 565-70. ¶ First appearance of both papers, one of them being the milestone paper in which Franklin describes his lightning experiment and proves what he had already conjectured, that lightening is an electrical discharge. Both of the present papers were to become part of his famous work "Experiments and Observations on Electricity.." assembled by his friend Peter Collinson, to whom the papers were addressed. The famous letter was also published in the "Gentleman's Magazine" for 1752."Franklin was the first American scientist to achieve an international reputation, with his work on electricity...The most dramatic result of Franklin's researches was the proof that lightening is really an electrical phenomenon. Others had made such a suggestion before him - even Newton himself - but it was he who provided the experimental proof. In 1752 he flew a kite in a thunderstorm and attached a key to its string. From this he collected electrical charges in a Leiden jar and showed that atmospheric and frictional or machine-made electricity are the same. He went on to propose the fixing of iron rods at the top of buildings, masts of ships, etc., from which he conducted the electric charges they collected from lightening into the wet subsoil - the invention of the lightening conductor."His reputation as a scientist was immediately established by the publication of the results of his researches in a serie … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovan Battista PIRANESI
Acquaforte e bulino, 1753, firmata in lastra . Etching and engraving, 1753, signed on plate. "Acquaforte e bulino, 1753, firmata in lastra . "Etching and engraving, 1753, signed on plate. 1753. Antique print, titled: 'Carte Reduite des Costes Occidentales d'Afrique [ ] et les Isles Canaries [ ].' - A sea chart of northwest Africa, Morocco, Madeira and the Canary islands, as well as southern Spain and Gibraltar. Depth soundings along the African and Spanish coasts, thumb lines and a decorative cartouche. Source unknown, to be determined. These type of charts are scarse as they were actually used at sea for navigation. Engraving, hand coloured on hand laid paper. Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Jacques-Nicolas Bellin for the Depot de la Marine'. Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was one of the most important cartographers of the 18th century. With a career spanning some 50 years, Bellin is best understood as geographe de cabinet and transitional mapmaker spanning the gap between 18th and early 19th century cartographic styles. His long career as Hydrographer and Ingénieur Hydrographe at the French Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine resulted in hundreds of high quality nautical charts of practically everywhere in the world. Depot des Cartes et Plans de la Marine (1720 - present), often called the Depot de Marine, was a French hydrographic mapping organization founded in 1720. Much like the U.S. Coast Survey, the British Admiralty, and the Spanish Deposito Hydrografico, the Depot was initiated as a storehouse and distribution center of existing nautical and marine charts. Eventually the Depot initiated its on mapping activities in an attempt to improve and expand upon existing material. Some of the well known hydrograhers / cartographers in the develop … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam and Den Haag, Desbordes and Neaulme, 1737-, 1753. - circa 13,5 x 7,8 cm. Together about 2200 pages Contemporary full mottled calf with richly gilt spines and covers, gilt arms of Madame de Pompadour on all covers Cf. Gay/ Lemonnyer III, p.172 and Barbier III, 252. Collection of essays in the form of letters by the author and philosopher Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, marquis d'Argens (1703-1771), who lived for 25 years at the court of Frederic II. of Prussia in Berlin and Potsdam before returning to his native town Aix-en-Provence. He describes and critizises contemporary literature, philosophy and fashions, some letters are very satirical and polemic against the clergy which is the reason why these volumes were printed in the Netherlands and prohibited in France. Complete sets are very rare to find as the letters appeared over a period of more than 15 years. Especially the last parts (17-19) seem to be uncommon and missing to most copies we could trace. Here the third volume with letters 5 and 6 has unfortunately gone lost. - This set is from the library of the Marquise de Pompadour (1721-1764) the official chief mistress of Louis XV. Each volume shows her arms on both covers. The first endpaper of each volume has another engraved bookplate (engraved by Agry) with different crowned arms. In 1757 the Marquise sold the Chateau de Crecy with all it contained and these volumes were most likely among the property sold. They are not mentioned in the catalogue that describes the books she left after her death. - Nice set, only minor browning, a little rubbed, one spine with a … [Click Below for Full Description]
