Longman Hurst Rees and Orme. First edition.. Very good copy.. Sadleir 1753; NCBEL III, 749. 8vo, contemporary calf (rebacked with the original spine laid on), gilt rules. Final imprint and errata leaves present; bound without the half-title. Mary Russell Mitford?s first book, published at her father?s expense in an edition of 500 copies. One leaf, I7, (pages 125-126) is transposed and tipped onto a stub - as if a cancel, but also perhaps just the careless work of a binder. Sadleir does not call for a cancel, and we have not been able to locate a copy with a cancel. Contemporary armorial bookplate of Thomas Holley on the front paste-down.

An Apology for the Naturalization of the Jews Containing, I. An Account of the Charters, Privileges and Immunities granted to the Jews, by the Kings of England, five hundred Years ago. II. The most popular Objections to their Naturalization, fairly stated and fully answered. III. The naturalization of the Jews an advantage to the Kingdom in general, and to Commerce in particular. IV. The probable happy Consequences of it to the Christian Religion. V. The Privileges enjoyed by the Jews in Foreign Countries, superior to those proposed to be granted them by Parliament. VI. The nature, Purport and Design of the present bill, explained and justified by the Facts. By a TRUE BELIEVER

printed for M. Cooper, in Pater-noster-row, W. Reeve, Fleet-Street, and C. Sympson, at the Bible-Warehouse, Chancery-lane, London, Great Britain 1753 - Title leaf, followed by pp 1-30 [total of 16 leaves]. [2], 30 p. References: English Short Title Catalogue; ESTCT14653. Trace stained. Modern calf. 8vo. Roth, Bibliohtheca Anglo-Judaica, page 223, number 108. In the year 1609 the naturalization of any foreigner settled in the England was made contingent upon receiving the Sacrament. Although this act was deliberately directed against Catholics, it incidentally would later affect Jews following the Re-Admission of 1653. This disability was lifted by the Whig Government of Henry Pelham in the Act of 1753 to permit persons professing the Jewish religion to be naturalized by Parliament. The Bill was, at best, of limited advantage to the Jews since only the wealthy would have been able to set in motion the machinery necessary to obtain naturalization. Although the measure was accepted unanimously by the House of Lords, it became a pawn in the upcoming general election campaign that resulted in its eventual repeal by the House of Commons. Taking full advantage of the prejudices and fears that the grant of naturalization to Jews had aroused, the Tory opposition fueled the unpopularity of the Act with a pamphlet and broadsheet campaign that warned of an England overrun with Jews. The Whig government was forced by public opinion to give way and the pro-Jewish legislation was duly repealed in the same year that was enacted. Our anonymous pamphleteer advocates the naturalization of the Jews, arguing that it would be an advantage to the Kingdom in general, and to commerce in particular, and that the privileges enjoyed by Jews resident in foreign countries are superior to those granted them by England.         Field Marshal Count Saxe's plan for new-modelling the French Army, reviving its Discipline, and improving its Exercise. In which are shewn the Advantages of the Roman Legion; and a Proposal made for forming the French Infantry into thirty Legions: with three Tables, containing, the necessary Alterations to be made in their present Infantry for that Purpose, and the Pay of the several Ranks in the Legion. Together with that great Man's thoughts on the true Causes of the French Victories and Defeats in the two last Wars; and his Delineation of the present State of the French army. Translated from the original French, with an additional Plan of the proposed Legion, and others of the Battalion, which were all omitted in the Original.

London: Printed for T. Osborne, in Gray?s-Inn, ?MCCCLIII?. [i.e. 1753]. - First edition in English of Memoires sur l'infanterie, ou, Traité des légions (which appeared in French the same year). Maurice marèchal de Saxe was one of the most heralded generals of the Ancien regime and was responsible for a string of French victories during the reign of Louis XV, not least the battle of Fontenoy (of 1745) in which his forces defeated a coalition of English, Austrian and Dutch troops. This book, attributed to him, though published posthumously is actually the work of his lieutenant général, Ricouart d'Hérouville. It uses the armies of ancient Rome as a yardstick for measuring the French army in its effectiveness, especially in the recruiting and training of soldiers. Immediately translated into English, it was influential on both sides of the Atlantic; a copy of this edition was notably owned by George Washington. The verso of the title-page advertises a simultaneously-issued work: The History of Maurice Count Saxe . (also Osborne, 1753). The two works are distinct, but owners (including Washington, it would appear from the Library of Congress Catalogue) sometimes had them bound as a single 3 volume work. 12mo (162 × 95 mm), pp. [4], 197, [1], plus 3 letterpress and 1 engraved folding plates at end. Slight browning and dampstaining, the final plate with closed tear at gutter. Contemporary sprinkled calf, red morocco spine label. Rubbed, label worn. A good copy. [Scarce; not in the BL catalogue. First Edition of this biography of military commander John Lindsay, twentieth Earl of Crawford [1702-1749]. In 1735 he received permission to join the imperial army under Prince Eugéne, distinguishing himself in particular at the battle of Claussen. In April of 1738 he travelled to St. Petersburg, having received from the Czarina Anne Iwanowa the command of a regiment of horse with the rank of general, and joined the army of Marshal Munich, then engaged in a war against the Turks. "He soon acquired great proficiency in the mode of warfare practised by the Russians, and excited special admiration by his horsemanship and his prowess with the sword. After the retreat of Munich to Kiow, Crawford left him and joined the imperialists near Belgrade. In April he rejoined the imperialists at Peterwaradin under Marshal Wallis. At the battle of Krotzka, 22 July, 1739, he was so severely wounded by a musket ball in the left thigh, that for some time his life was despaired of, and his health was permanently injured.". (DCB) He later served under the Earl of Stair at Hoschstet, and commanded the brigade of life guards at Dettingen. With the rank of brigadier-general he joined the allied army near Brussels in May of 1744, and fought at the battle of Fontenoy in April of 1745. The following May he was made a major-general, and on the outbreak of the rebellion in Scotland, he was appointed by the government to command six thousand Hessian troops, with whom he secured the towns of Perth and Stirling, and the passes into the lowlands. He subsequently served for a brief period in the Netherlands. [Attributes: First Edition]

Carte des Pays connus sous le nom de Canada

Paris: Boudet, 1753. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand outline color. Image measures 18.75 x 26.25". Sheet measures 21.5 x 29". This rare separate issue map by Robert de Vaugondy depicts the region of North America east of the Great Lakes. Published in 1753, the map dates to a period of conflicting colonial claims, with the French and the British vying over land on the present-day border of the United States and Canada. To the extent that de Vaugondy generated controversy and debate in his drawing of boundaries, the map figures in some ways as a cartographic prefiguration of the French and Indian War, which officially began the following year in 1753. In addition to its political significance, the map also provides remarkable detail about North America in the mid-18th century, with particular attention paid to the various lakes and rivers that define the region's landscape. Hand outline color provides further definition to the coasts and accentuates the centrality of the Great Lakes. An inset in the lower left corner shows Newfoundland, the southwestern corner of which just barely appears at the right margin of the map. In the lower left corner is a beautiful title cartouche that celebrates the landscape thus described, nestling a waterfall and flora amongst elaborate scrollwork. The map is in very good condition with wide margins. Some small tears in margins not affecting the image. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) was an important French mapmaker during the 18th century. His "Atlas Universel" was one of the most significant atlases of the period, integrating older sources with more modern surveyed maps in order to convey correct geographical and political information. This map of Poland demonstrates his commitment to detail.

Nieuwe kaart van het Oostelykste Deel der Weereld

Amsterdam: Isaak Tirion, 1753. Handcoloured map measuring 360 x 490 mm. (sheet size); mounted, fine. A colourful and attractive eighteenth-century Dutch map of the Old World, Africa, Asia and Australasia. Interestingly, it depicts the Australian continent connected to the landmass of New Guinea - an archaism given that Abel Tasman proved the two lands distinct and separate in 1643, some 110 years prior to the publication of this map. Ironically, a large river flowing from the deep interior of the continent into the Gulf of Carpenteria is named 'Abel Tasman's R.' Also discovered and named by Tasman, Van Diemen's land (being present-day Tasmania) is also notably absent and the entire south-eastern mass of the continent is approximated in dotted lines stretching to the extreme south. As was conventional of the era, present day Western Australia is labelled New Holland, and the landfalls of principal eighteenth-century Dutch voyagers are noted. The Amsterdam based publisher Isaak Tirion (1705-1769) is known to have produced books, charts and maps for the Dutch mercantile elite. Tirion was primarily a cartographic publisher, who issued several lavish atlases as well as smaller geographical guides (literally 'Hand Atlas'), from which this attractive map is derived. During his prolific career Tirion was associated with the Dutch East India Company; in 1757 Willem Udemans, a shipwright and director of the VOC shipyard at Middelburg commissioned Tirion to print a treatise on naval architecture. He also published a Dutch language edition of Commodore Anson's circumnavigation in 1749, a work remarkable for the quality of its maps and charts.

Native opposition to the King´s surveyors. N.d. [1753]. Lisbon. In 8vo. 4 ff. Recent quart calf over boards, spine gilt with lettering piece. Browned throughout, uniformly.First edition. Extremely rare imprint, with first-hand news on the perilous execution of the Treatise of Madrid (1750), between the Kingdoms of Portugal and Spain; the peace treatise exchanged the bulk of Paraguay, home of the Reductions of the Guarani´s, for Colonia del Sacramento, a Portuguese possession in one of the banks of the River Plate. As per the treatise, Colonia would pass to Spain, eager to control the navigability of the River Plate to themselves, whilst Portugal would receive Paraguay. The immense region of Paraguay (between the rivers Ibicui and Uruguay) had several Jesuit missions occupied by thousands of Guarani´s; these last were by no means anxious to leave the product of their work with the natives and the already-self-supporting Missions; the natives (mainly Guarani) weren´t either. As it would be expected, the Indians clung to their farms, homes and land; the conflict arose promptly and sharply, with the Guarani´s and Atalaya natives attacking the Portuguese and Spanish surveyors.Rare, we could only find the copy at the New York Public Library. Not in Sabin.         Mémoires de Gaudence de Luques , prisonnier de l'inquisition

Amsterdam: n.p., 1753. Four volumes in two, octavo; with all four titles and half-titles, each volume with an engraved plate as well as an engraved headpiece vignette at start of text; contemporary French mottled calf, head of spines chipped but an attractive set. First illustrated edition of an interesting utopia. The second French edition, with four wonderful engravings and four vignettes by Fessard, and the first illustrated edition in any language. An earlier French translation, by Miltz and de Saint-Germain, was published in 1746, and it was not until 1753 that this edition came out, newly revised and extended by the prominent eighteenth-century man-of-letters, Jean-Baptiste Dupuy-Demportes (d. 1770). Although it pretends to derive from an Italian source, the Memoirs was created by an Englishman. The text was sometimes thought to be the work of Bishop Berkeley, but became correctly attributed to Berington during the nineteenth century. As the title suggests, the work takes the form of a trial transcript, with questioning from various inquisitors and a learned commentary from one Signor Rhedi. The protagonist Gaudentio, hauled in front of the Inquisition, describes Mezzorania in Africa, a city which has been cut off from external contact for over three thousand years. His first impression of the principal city of Phor is of an 'immense Garden', but his more detailed analysis shows a city which owes much to the solar model earlier proposed by Campanella in Città del Sole. Less regulated than many other utopias, the citizens have a system based on the precept 'Thou shalt do no wrong to anyone'. Unusually for the strict utopia, long-term relationships based on love are actively encouraged; indeed, Gaudentio talks at length about his own relationship with a Mezzoranian woman. It is this emotional engagement which leads Rees to see in the Memoirs an unusually novelistic utopia, and thus a work which avoids some of the neatness and simplifications of others in the genre. Ellison, in an article devoted to this 'forgotten utopia' and its authorship, comments that 'Berington can stand upon his own merits, and the early appraisal of the work which saw in it the reflection of a wise, humane, and generous spirit does not have to be seriously discounted.' ('Gaudentio Di Lucca: A Forgotten Utopia', PMLA, 1935). Similarly, Gove happily approves Dunlop classing the work with Gulliver's Travels and Robinson Crusoe.
