John Holland esq. pencil sketch (likley a self-portrait)

NP [1753], ND - John Holland (1734.1807) - printmaker; British (of Peterhouse, Cambridge. Etcher.) Pencil sketch or drawing on heavy paper, cut in an oval shape, 6" high by 5" wide approximately. On the bottom right quadrant of the portrait a tiny but, visible monogram, reading JH 1753. (John Holland?) ON the reverse of the drawing is written, ìJohn Holland Esq. and farther below a date of 1753.Some small areas of foxing otherwise very good+ condition, John Holland (1734.1807), may have have sketched this likeness of himself. Very little is known about him, apart that he was an amateur draughtsman an etcher., ì I was only able to find three works, all etchings. The Yale Centre for British Art has two etchings by Holland after Rembrandt's compositions. This is not unusual, as many 18th-century amateurs and skilled artists would try to copy the works of great masters. Most interesting, however, is a piece from the British Museum's collection. It is described as a self portrait by John Holland, dated circa 1756. One is immediately struck by the resemblance of Holland and the sitter depicted in your drawing. Their noses look quite similar. Furthermore, both sitters have a beauty spot: on the right cheek in your drawing, on the left cheek in the British Museum's etching. (The printmaking process will inverse any design, which probably explains why this facial feature moves from one side to the other).î Stephane Roy, Ottawa, of the Art History department at Carleton University.       Frid. Chretien Pelt, A Copenhague et a Lipsic 1753 - In 12, (14) 388pp. Second edition after the original of 1741. Text is clean with no inscriptions. Contains seven engravings by Bruhl which are as follows: A Frontispiece portrait of Klimius, a fold-out map of the subterranean world, an image of a 'Botuan', 'Martinien en perruque', 'Guide des prisonniers au firmament', 'Un repas a Mezendore', and 'Un habitant du pays de musique'. Some copies from this edition are known to contain an eighth engraving but they are rare. The first Latin edition contained no engravings and the first French edition only three. An allegorical and satirical work attributed to Ludvig Holberg(1684- 1754) by Barbier in his 'Dictionary of Anonymous Works'. Holberg was a Danish author and professor of Law and Philosophy. In this Utopian work Holberg criticises the political and social institutions of his time after the manner of Swift in 'Gulliver's Travels'. It is the first work of fiction based on the astronomical theories of Edmond Halley as well as being the first work of fiction where the protagonist is transported into a subterranean world. With 21 beautifully handcoloured engraved plates, some heightened in gold. Later half cloth, green marbled sides. A very scarce work which remained unfinished. It was issued in parts and is hardly ever found complete. The present copy does not have the engraved title. Ward and Carozzi no. 1980 list a copy with 36 pages and 26 plates, the British Museum (Nat. Hist.) copy comprises the same number of pages and plates and the Vienna Natural History Museum has 38 plates. The Carl Krotki copy had 26 plates. The full number of plates and pages agreed upon seems to be 42 coloured plates with 52 pages of text, see Brunet and Cobres. However a few copies have 46 plates, the last 4 plates were published a few years after plate 42 was published. In June 2006 a copy from the Pierre Berès collection was sold in Paris with 46 plates. /Schmidel was a famous mineralogist-botanist editing Gesner's posthumous botanical publications. He was professor of pharmacology at Erlangen and served as physician to Margrave Carl Alexander.//The plates of the above work are outstanding and belong to the most attractive mineralogical plates ever made. "Gauthier d'Agoty, in his prospectus, discussed the difficulty involved in rendering minerals in color. ... He does make an exception here for the work of 'Mr. Schmiedel', whose handcoloured plates showing mineral specimens he acknowledges to be among the best we have in this genre" (Wilson.         Carte Réduite de L'Ocean Meridional. [Atlantic Ocean]

Paris: 1753 - Size: 880 x 570 mm. Very good condition. Copper engraving. A large scale map of the Atlantic Ocean with the associated coastlines of South America and the lower half of western Africa. The map is dominated by a splendid, decorative title cartouche within northern south America. A multi star compass point is at the centre point of the map, rhumb lines go in all directions. Bellin was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French navy upon the creation of France's hydrographic office, the Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine. As befits a maritime chart, all place names and general information is coastal, and there is no real attempt to engrave anything of note inland of the coastal areas. Over a 50-year career, he produced a large number of maps and charts. The accuracy of Bellin's charts ensured that they were in use for many years.

Commentaries of the Late War in Italy, Translated from The Original Latin. To which is prefixed An Introduction. By A. Wishart.

London: A. Millar, 1753 - Octavo (200 × 115 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt in compartments, brown morocco label, red speckled edges. Contemporary shelf label to tail of spine. Binding lightly rubbed, small nick to head of spine, short crack to lower joint, small spot to upper board, tanning to margin of half-title, light foxing and offsetting to contents. An excellent copy. First edition in English, first published in Latin, "Ludgunum Batavorum" Genoa, 1750-1. An account of the Italian Campaigns of the War of the Austrian Succesion by a participant. Buonamici joined the army of Charles Bourbon, King of the Two Sicilies, and later Charles II of Spain, first as a cadet in the Bourbon cavalry regiment, and then with the King's Bodyguard. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Velletri, 1744, and wrote an acount of it in Latin for which the king awarded him a commission in the artillery, the position of treasurer of the Adriatic city of Barletta, and a substantial pension. This freed his time to write a history of the whole war which was published to even greater acclaim, being translated into French, German, Spanish and as here English. "That Buonamici had the antient historians, particularly Caesar's Commentaries, in view, is beyond all doubt; and that he has happily imitated these excellent patterns, is well known to those who have seen his much applauded performance. So lively, and at the same time natural a description has he given of the transactions of the late Italian war, that the reader fancies himself a spectator of the various battles sieges and marches " (advertisement). A pretty copy in a contemporary binding. [Attributes: First Edition]

        TESI.]

Gravat sobre seda de sant Narcís. Tip. Pau Nadal. Girona. Tesi.
