        ESSAI SUR L'ARCHITECTURE.

First edition. The first and most important of his books, Laugier's ESSAI first introduced the ideal of rationalism into architecture and quickly became the cornerstone of neo-classical architectural theory in France and throughout Europe. His most famous idea, that the basis for all architecture could be observed in the structural elements of a primitive hut, underscored his more revolutionary argument that the fundamental elements of architecture are derived from nature and should be expressive of function. The originality of his ideas and the persuasive fashion in which he presented them had an immediate impact on the younger architects of his day for whom the decorative excesses of the rococo no longer seemed compatible with the spirit of Enlightenment that they were eager to embrace. His ideas were applied to three areas of design where great changes were about to take place: architecture; urban design; and landscape gardening. In architecture, the book's influence was widely felt (John Soane, for example, owned ten copies of the book) and long-lasting (Le Corbusier refers to him frequently). The section of his book devoted to urban design is similarly important. He was among the earliest architectural writers to present a theoretical foundation for the aesthetic improvement of the urban landscape, expressed in practical terms by a series of proposals for reconfiguring the streets and squares of Paris along with other recommendations for the harmonization of street facades and other improvements. The final 51 pages devoted to landscape architecture are equally original and prophetic. While praising Le Nôtre, Laugier presents an extended critique of the gardens at Versailles and faults the contemporary French garden for its rigid symmetry and monotonous regularity. Again, nature is presented as the model upon which a reformed art of garden design should be based, one in which simplicity, caprice and even a certain amount of disorder should animate the scene. He also cites the gardens of the Chinese as superior examples of this more natural style of garden, and as such seems to be the first writer on garden design to apply Attiret's description of Chinese gardens to proposals for how European gardens might be improved. The book was first published anonymously at a time when Laugier was still a Jesuit priest. The immediate interest in his ideas quickly lead to translations in English and German and a revised second edition in 1755. The printing of the original edition must have been quite small, and surviving copies are uncommon in the market place. In spite of its recognized importance, no copies are found in either the Fowler or the Millard collections. Wiebenson II-25; Ganay 74; Berlin Cat. 2405 (Second edition); Cicognara 545 (Second edition). 8vo (16.2 x 10 cm); xvi + 293 + (18) pp.with engraved title device. Contemporary full calf, professionally restored, with gilt paneled and tooled spine, leather title label and original marbled end papers; skillful restoration at hinges, corners and spine ends; text clean and tight; allowing for restorations, a very good copy.

Theoria Motus Lunae Exhibens Omnes Eius Inaequalitates. In additamento hoc idem Argumentum aliter Tractatur simulque ostenditur quemadmodum Motus Lunae cum Omnibus inaequalitatibus Innumeris aliis Modis repraesentairi atque ad Calculum revocaripossit. One of Euler's rarest publications. St. Petersburg: Academiae Imperialis Scientiarum, 1753.

Very rare first edition, untouched and unopened in its original wrappers, of Euler's 'first lunar theory', the theoretical basis for Tobias Mayer's lunar tables that won the British Parliament prize for the longitude problem (see below). "Based on Newton's universal law of gravitation, Euler first developed his first lunar theory with the aid of his method of variation of orbital parameters. This method is fairly general in the sense that it cannot only be applied to the theory of lunar motion, but also to the planetary motion. Euler published his first lunar theory in his celebrated treatise 'Theory of lunar motion' in 1753. He continued his research for almost the next three decades to make significant improvement of his first lunar theory including the lunar orbit, Moon's position, equations for the Moon's motion, lunar eclipses and the period of revolution of the Moon." (Debnath: The Legacy of Leonhard Euler, p.365). "Astronomy owes to Euler the method of variation of arbitrary constants. By it he attacked the problem of perturbations, explaining, in case of two planets, the secular variations of eccentricities, nodes, etc. He was one of the first to take up with success the theory of the moon's motion by giving approximate solutions to the 'problem of three bodies'. He laid a sound basis for the calculation of tables of the moon." (Cajori: History of Mathematics, p.240). "The first Euler lunar theory had an important practical consequence: T. Mayer, an astronomer from Göttingen, compiled, according to its formulas, lunar tables (1755) that enabled the calculation of the position of the moon and thus the longitude of a ship with an exactness previously unknown in navigation. The British Parliament had announced as early as 1714 a large cash prize for the method of determination of longitude at sea with error not to exceed half a degree, and smaller prizes for less exact methods. The prize was not awarded until 1765; £ 3,000 went to Mayer's widow and £300 to Euler for his preliminary theoretical work. Simultaneously a large prize was awarded to J. Harrison for his construction of a more nearly perfect chronometer. Lunar tables were included in all nautical almanacs after 1767, and the method was used for about a century." Eneström 187; Sotheran, Second Supplement 3098; Honeyman 1068; Macclesfield 743.. Large 4to (270 x 212 mm), entirely untouched and completely unopened in the original blue wrappers, pp. [i-iii] iv-viii, 1-347 [1:blank] and 1 engraved folding plate. A remarkable survival of one of Euler's rarest works

MÉMOIRES HISTORIQUES SUR LA LOUISIANE, CONTENANT CE QUI Y EST ARRIVE DE PLUS MEMORABLE DEPUIS L'ANNEE 1687

Paris. 1753.. Two volumes bound in one. [4],x,261; [4],338pp., plus six plates (three with two images), and a folding engraved map of Louisiana. Half titles. Antique half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, leather label. Very good. A rare and important early history of French Louisiana. "One of the best contemporary histories of French Louisiana, based on the author's twenty-five-year residence in the colony as an army officer, engineer, and planter. The first volume describes the natural history and life of the inhabitants, Europeans and Indians; and the second volume is devoted to the military and political history of the colony from about 1717 to 1740, especially the Indian wars. Dumont's work is the first reliable account of much of Louisiana" - Streeter. The engraved plates depict four different tree specimens, while the wonderful plans show New Orleans and Fort Rozalie des Natchez, as well as a typical Louisiana house plan. The handsome folding map of Louisiana notes the different Indian tribes and villages in the region. This is one of the few reliable firsthand accounts of French Louisiana in the mid-18th century, and far rarer than the works of Bossu or Le Page du Pratz, the other cornerstones of the time and place. "According to Barbier, there is some evidence that a certain "Abbé Desplaces" had a hand in commissioning Génard to write the work, which enjoyed something of a succès de scandale.

?"Amsterdam: 1753. Four volumes in two, 12mo (165 x 95 mm). [2], xvi, 242; [2], xii, 268; [2], ix, [1 blank], 225, [1 blank]; [2], viii, 194 pp. Late 18th- or early 19th-century German half roan, sides covered in comb-marbled paper, red morocco gilt lettering-pieces on spine, edges stained red. Occasional light foxing, binding worn. Provenance: Dr. H. I. Rosenbaum, red inkstamps on versos of first title in each volume.*** only edition of a rare Enlightenment feminist treatise. Authorship is attributed to Dom. Caffiaux, a Benedictine monk of St.-Germain-des-Près, and the encyclopedic scope of the work is characteristic of that order's scholarly endeavors. In the first volume, borrowing liberally from Poullain de la Barre's L'egalité des deux sexes (1673), the author demonstrates that women are the equals of men. In this context he discusses women?'s education, historical examples of poweful women, and the desirability of female involvement in affairs of state. Caffiaux agrees with Poullain's premise that the source of injustice toward women lies in the false assumption of their natural inferiority, and Poullain's systematic Cartesian arguments are woven throughout his exhaustive treatise to justify, perhaps, its encyclopedic intent. Caffiaux's work thus partakes both of the traditional apologetic mode, containing long lists of women of distinction, and Poullain's new rationalist approach to the "querelle des femmes." Chapter V in Vol. II, for example, contains 200 pages on women's achievements in the arts and sciences, covering Antiquity to the present day. But rather than standing alone, this list is placed in context by a discussion of the definition of "science" (the pursuit of learning or intellectual achievement), its moral benefits, why men "do not want women to be learned ," and "how men took over science." The second volume focuses on eminent women, their heroism, and their accomplishments in various fields. In the spirit of the time, women's learned achievements are given even greater weight than demonstrations of unusual virtue. Volumes III and IV are devoted to weaknesses and vices conventionally associated with the female sex ?- exclusive interest in love, flirtation, chatter, gossip, indiscretion, etc., all faults either refuted or shown to be shared by both sexes. Throughout the work Caffiaux's examples and arguments are buttressed by extensive citations from the classics, modern literary works, legal treatises, the Bible, and contemporary philosophers. That Caffiaux's book was published anonymously and under a false imprint may have less to do with its subversive content than with the byzantine pre-Revolutionary system of privilèges and permissions. Its rarity is not surprising considering its small press-run: the Bibliothèque nationale catalogue identifies the printer from the "permission tacite" granted to Le Clerc, for a print run of a mere 200 copies. I locate 3 copies in American libraries (Stanford, UC Irvine and UCLA / Clark Library). Barbier I, 868; Gay I, 837; Albistur & Armogathe, Histoire du féminisme français, pp. 167, 185-186; Graesse II, 349; L. Steinbrügge, Das moralische Geschlecht: Theorie und literarische Entwürfe über die Natur der Frau in der franzözische Aufklärung (1987), pp. 25-26 (English edition: The moral sex : woman?'s nature in the French Enlightenment, Oxford 1995, pp. 16-17).

The Lives of the Poets of Great Britain and Ireland

for R. Griffiths, London 1753 - The Lives of the Poets of Great Britain and Ireland, to the Time of Dean Swift. Compiled from ample Materials scattered in a Variety of Books, and especially from the MS. Notes of the late ingenious Mr Coxeter and others, collected for this Design. By Mr. Cibber. In Four Volumes. Five volumes. 12mo. [167 x 98 x 137 mm]. [1]f, [ii], 354 pp; [2]ff, 353pp; [2]ff, 353, [3] pp; [2]ff, 356pp; [3]ff, 354pp. Bound in contemporary calf, the covers with a gilt double fillet border, the spines divided into six panels, the bands flanked with gilt fillets, lettered in the second panel on a red goatskin label and numbered in the third, plain endleaves and edges. (Some wear, upper headcap on vol.2 chipped, the edges of two boards a little singed). A little browning and a few minor stains, but a very good copy. Published in five volumes, not four as stated on the title. It appeared in 25 parts. A second edition was published in the same year with the edition statement on the drop-head title on p[1] in vol.1. Vols. 2-5 has "By Mr. Cibber, and Other Hands" on the titles. The claim to authorship was hotly disputed between Robert Shiels (or Shiells or Shields) and Theophilus Cibber. According to Boswell, "[Johnson] told us that the book entitled "The Lives of the Poets, by Mr Cibber", was entirely compiled by Mr Shiels, a Scotch-man, one of his amanuenses. "The booksellers (said he,) gave Theophilus Cibber, who was then in prison, ten guineas, to allow "Mr. Cibber" to be put upon the title-page, as the author". Boswell did, however, add that Cibber had been engaged as editor "with powers to alter, expunge, or add, as he liked". Shiels was paid nearly seventy pounds and Cibber twenty guineas. Shiels was born in Roxburghshire and went to London as a journeyman printer. In 1748 Johnson employed him as one of six amanuenses on his Dictionary. At the conclusion of this work Shiels was commissioned by Ralph Griffiths to compile the Lives of the poets. It may have been Johnson who suggested the project in the first place and Walter Jackson Bate suggests that many of the materials were provided by Johnson, "who could also have dictated some of the passages". Shiels died of consumption on 27th December 1753, and Johnson provided his epitaph: "his life was virtuous, and his end was pious". [Attributes: First Edition]
