BROOKSHAW, George.
Bradley III, p. 78; Dunthorne 51 and p. 55; GFB, p. 81; Nissen, BBI 244; Oak Spring Pomona 40b. Quarto edition of a collection of 60 attractive coloured plates illustrating different varieties of fruits, by the former cabinet-maker George Brookshaw (1751-1823), "one of the most eminent English artists of the early nineteenth century" (Dunthorne). It is meant to promote the cultivation of fruit trees in Great Britain (so they wouldn't have to import so much from France) and to inform the public about quality, varieties, and "above all ... to excite gentlemen ... so that .. they may ... be able to direct and superintend their own gardeners ..., instead of being, as they too generally are, the sport of their ignorant pretension" (preface). The plates shows the fruits, twigs, leaves and an occasional flower, of 164 varieties of apples, apricots, pears, plums, raspberries, strawberries, cherries, currants, figs, gooseberries, grapes, melons, nectarines, nuts and peaches. Also of interest is the table at the end, specifying the gardens from which the most curious and rare specimens were obtained. Some occasional minor spots and thumbing and faint browning (in particular to the title-page of volume one), nonetheless still in very good condition and wholly untrimmed. Binding rubbed along the extremities and sides, but still good.

MILTON, John
1751 Paradise Lost John Milton Poetry English Allegory Hayman Illustrated Fenton “The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.” John Milton, Paradise Lost A charming illustrated printing of John Milton’s work ‘Paradise Lost’. This 1751 edition features all twelve full-page Hayman engravings along with a ‘life of the author’ by Elijah Fenton. ‘Paradise Lost’ follows the biblical story of the Fall of Man and the temptation of Adam and Eve. Milton himself states that purpose for this book was to “Justify the ways of God to Men”. It covers the characters Adam, Eve, and Satan and the roles each played in the development of religious culture and idolatry. It was critically acclaimed and well-received by many famed personalities, including Samuel Johnson who states. “[Paradise Lost shows] Milton’s peculiar power to astonish and he seems to have been well acquainted with his own genius, and to know what it was the Nature had bestowed upon him more bountifully than upon others: the power of displaying the vast, illuminating the splendid, enforcing the awful, darkening the gloomy, and aggravating the dreadful. Current Christian writer C.S. Lewis also interpreted Milton’s landmark poem as a ‘genuine Christian morality tale’ (Leonard). The famous letter was also published in the "Gentleman's Magazine" for 1752."Franklin was the first American scientist to achieve an international reputation, with his work on electricity...The most dramatic result of Franklin's researches was the proof that lightening is really an electrical phenomenon. Others had made such a suggestion before him - even Newton himself - but it was he who provided the experimental proof. In 1752 he flew a kite in a thunderstorm and attached a key to its string. From this he collected electrical charges in a Leiden jar and showed that atmospheric and frictional or machine-made electricity are the same. HUME, DAVID. - ["OF ALL MY WRITINGS. INCOMPARABLY THE BEST."]
London, A. Millar, 1751. 12mo. Contemporary half calf with 5 raised bands and gilt tittle-label to spine. Hinges, capitals and corners worn, but unrestored and still tight. Very light scattered browning and one leaf with a tear (no loss), otherwise internally very nice and clean. Old owner's inscriptions (Francis Humphreys, Max Ede) to front free end-paper and contemporary owner's name to top of title-page ("Geo: Hickes"). (8), 253, (3, -advertisements) pp. Fully complete, with the half-title, errata (several of these corrected in a neat, early hand), and advertisements. First edition, first issue (L3 in the uncancelled state) of Hume's ethical materpiece, according to Hume himself "of all my writings, historical, philosophical or literary, incomparably the best" (Hume, "My Own Life, 1776).The present work is a cornerstone of moral philosophy, laying bare to us the foundation of ethics. It hugely influenced all later writings on ethics and constitutes a milestone in the history of moral thought. Hume's fist discussions about ethics appear in Book 3 of his "A Treatise of Human Nature". There, however, his moral philosophy is not fully developed, and only in his ethical magnum opus (the present work), does his moral philosophy come in to full being. "Late in his life Hume deemed the "Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals" his best work, and in style it is a model of elegance and subtlety. His method in that work differs from that of the "Treatise": instead of explicating the nature of virtue and vice and our knowledge of them in terms of underlying features of the human … [Click Below for Full Description]

Scarce edition of an important Portuguese history of the Capuchin Franciscans of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, by Father Manuel de Monforte (?-1711), the official chronicler of the Order. The work contains crucial information on the establishment of missions, exploits and early evangelization in America, Africa and Asia. Second? edition (the first was printed in 1696). Three chapters are entirely dedicated to the first missionary actions in Mexico by "the Twelve Apostles of New Spain", the first group of missionaries who arrived in New Spain in 1524, led by Fey Martin de Valencia (1474-Mexico 1534). The chronicle, describes the activities of the missionaries, their point of view regarding the natives, and the methods used to forcibly convert Indian tribes. It reports that during the first days the missionaries were responsible for the destruction of five hundred temples and more than 20 thousand idols (one of the missionaries burn by his own hand one thousand idols in just one day). The work also accounts for the establishment of several seminaries were Indian children were educated by the missionaries. It refers to several episodes, including the case of three children of the mission of Haxcala (Tlaxcala) who were killed by members of Indian tribes after they tried to destroy their idols. The book also describes the deeds of Fray Antonio Ortiz, who arrived to New Spain with the second group of Franciscans. Chapter XII is dedicated to Fray Joao da Veiga, the first missionary sent to Chile. The famous Lalande-paper describing the measurement of the Moon's distance from the earth, which was accomplished by measuring the parallax from the different places of observation, and thus, by using triangulation methods, he found a Moon-Earth distance of about 60 times the earth's radius, and thus provided a more exact value of the estimates known since antiquity. - "In 1751 Abbé Nicolas de la Caille departed on an expedition to Cape of Good Hope, one of the main purposes of which was to measure the lunar parallax. It was importent that simultaneous measurements be made in Europe at some points on the same meridian. The most advantageous site was Berlin, which unfortunately lacked an adequate instrument, Le Monnier permitted Lalande to go to his place, entrusting him to his quadrant, whic was generally considered to be the best in France. At Berlin, Lalande was admitted to the Prussian cademy, where he enjoied the company of Maupertois, Euler and others..."(DSB).Euler in his paper (Reflexions of the different degrees of sunlight on other celestial bodies" considers the possibillity of combining distances with degrees of reflected sunlight. - Enestrom: E 178.

1751. Traité sur les apparitions des Esprits, et sur les vampires ou les revenans de Hongrie, de Moravie 1751,Paris,Calmet (Treatise on Apparitions of Spirits and on Vampires and Revenants from Hungary, Moravia, etc.) Calmet's book deals with several types of apparitions, demonical and otherwise. Analyzes the various accounts of vampires or the walking dead which had come out of Eastern Europe during the 1720's and 30's. Calmet defined a vampire as a person who had been dead and buried and then returned from the grave to disturb the living by sucking their blood and even causing death. The only remedy for vampirism was to dig up the body of the vampire and either sever its head and drive a stake through the chest or burn the body. Using that definition, Calmet collected as many accounts of vampirism as possible from official reports, newspapers, eyewitness reports, travelogues, and critical pieces from his learned colleagues. worn covers,age-toning,some foxing, french language Two volume set,486+488 pages Returns not accepted.

[William IV, Prince of Orange].
1751. 4to. 93, (1) pp, final blank. Contemporary marbled wrappers. First edition. A plan for restoring the foreign trade of the Dutch Republic, in gradual decline since the beginning of the century, by means of the introduction of a limited free port. The actual plan is preceded by an extensive "Treatise on the commerce of the Republic of the United Netherlands", in which the causes of the (former) prosperity of the republic are investigated: natural and physical causes, moral and political causes (the wisdom and prudence of the administration), and external causes. "The substantial benefits resulting from religious toleration, political liberty, and the freedom of industry have seldom, indeed, been more clearly set forth than in this dissertation" (McCulloch). It is stated that the main cause of the decline of Dutch commerce, so obvious after the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle of 1748, is the heavy tax burden. The plan includes the diminution of taxes by the introduction of a system of free port, though with some limitations. The proposal was presented by the stadtholder William IV, Prince of Orange (1711-51), to the States-General, who ordered that the report be printed. Though the title mentions the stadtholder only, it is a collective work whose authors included the prince's adviser De Larrey and the Amsterdam merchants Thomas Hope and Marselis. The prososals were not put into effect because of the high costs of the long wars. - Also published in English the same year as "Proposals made by the Prince of Orange for redressing and amending the trade of the Republic".
