Libretto probably by Agostino Piovene, who is not mentioned. The music is composed by Signor Duni. Cast list features Ottavio Albuzio as Bajazet; Pietro di Mezzo as Tamerlano, Bianca Riboldi as Irene. The scenery is described on p.5. The designer is Francesco Graffi, who studied under Pietro Righini, the ballets choreographed by Giuseppe Brunori and the costumes created by Antonio Breda. Bajazet, the Ottoman emperor, has been defeated and captured by Tamerlano the Turko-Mongol conqueror. Tamerlano, though betrothed to Irene , Princess of Trebizond, whom he has never seen, determines to wed Bajazet's daughter Asteria ignorant of her love for Andronico, a Greek prince and Tamerlano's dependent. Bajazet rejects the proposed marriage, but Asteria pretends to agree to it as part of a plot to kill Tamerlano; the plot is however foiled when Irene, disguised as a handmaiden, intervenes. A grateful Tamerlano consents to marry Irene, and, moved by Bajazet's suicide, pardons Asteria and allows her to marry Andronico. PROVENANCE: with the library label of Kenneth Nebenzahl on the front paste-down, his sale Christie's New York, 10th April 2012, lot 75 First edition of the French account, preceded by the official Spanish account published in Madrid in 1748. Philip V, King of Spain granted permission to the French Academy of Sciences to send an expedition under the leadership of Charles-Marie de la Condamine (1701-1774) to the equinoctial regions of Spanish South America in order to measure the dimension and shape of the earth, and so settle the controversy between the Cartesians and Newtonians as to whether the earth was flattened or elongated at the poles. The expedition embarked for South America in 1735, and reached it the following year, but their geodetic measurements were hampered by the terrain and difficult working relationships between the scientists. Etching/engraving on a verge type hand laid paper with watermark, not visible on every sheet. Description: This old antique print originates from: 'Encyclopedie ou Dictionnaire raisonne des sciences, des arts et des metiers, par une Societe de Gens de lettres.' which was published under the direction of Diderot and d'Alembert, with 17 volumes of text and 11 volumes of plates between 1751 and 1772. It contained 72,000 articles written by more than 140 contributors.This encyclopdia was a massive reference work for the arts and sciences, as well as a means to propagate the ideas of the French Enlightment. The impact of this encyclopedia was enormous.Artists and Engravers: Denis Diderot (1713-1784) was a French philosopher, art critic and writer. Jean le Rond d'Alembert (1717-1783) was a French mathematician, mechanician, physicist and philosopher. These plates are engraved by J.A.Defehrt and Bonaventure/Benoit-Louis Prevost after J.R Lucotte or Goussier. Condition: Very good. Stain in lower, not affecting image. Étienne-Gabriel Morelly, le « méconnu des Lumières » (Wagner, Morelly le méconnu des Lumières, 1978) - on a longtemps attribué certains de ses écrits à Diderot - est de nos jours reconnu comme étant le premier à avoir développé une philosophie du socialisme voire du communisme également appelée socialisme utopique. Ce traité politique, très inspiré par sa forme du Prince de Machiavel, se constitue de quatre parties bien distinctes : le prince citoyen, le prince législateur et magistrat, le prince politique et le prince guerrier. Importante carta manoscritta murale disegnata con inchiostro bruno, raffigurante la pianta ed il territorio del Capo di Pieve di Corbetta, datata 1751. Il titolo è scritto su un decorativo festone, a sua volta racchiuso in un grande cartiglio a volute. Lungo il lato destro, altro grande cartiglio senza scritte, seguito da una semplice rosa dei venti sorretta da un putto alato. Tutt'attorno alla raffigurazione del territorio sono chiaramente indicati i confini territoriali. La carta è intelata e montata ancora sui bastoni dell'epoca. Alcuni inevitabili segni del tempo conferiscono un particolare sapore a quest'opera unica nel suo genere

Il tutto finemente inciso in rame. Bellissima legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida con dorso fittamente decorato in oro ed armi al centro dei piatti. Esemplare fresco, marginoso ed in eccellente stato di conservazione. Stimabile edizione, la prima con questo commento, impreziosita da una legatura assai elegante. Cfr.
