1751. Traité sur les apparitions des Esprits, et sur les vampires ou les revenans de Hongrie, de Moravie 1751,Paris,Calmet (Treatise on Apparitions of Spirits and on Vampires and Revenants from Hungary, Moravia, etc.) Calmet's book deals with several types of apparitions, demonical and otherwise. Analyzes the various accounts of vampires or the walking dead which had come out of Eastern Europe during the 1720's and 30's. Calmet defined a vampire as a person who had been dead and buried and then returned from the grave to disturb the living by sucking their blood and even causing death. The only remedy for vampirism was to dig up the body of the vampire and either sever its head and drive a stake through the chest or burn the body. Using that definition, Calmet collected as many accounts of vampirism as possible from official reports, newspapers, eyewitness reports, travelogues, and critical pieces from his learned colleagues. worn covers,age-toning,some foxing, french language Two volume set,486+488 pages Returns not accepted.

[William IV, Prince of Orange].
1751. 4to. 93, (1) pp, final blank. Contemporary marbled wrappers. First edition. A plan for restoring the foreign trade of the Dutch Republic, in gradual decline since the beginning of the century, by means of the introduction of a limited free port. The actual plan is preceded by an extensive "Treatise on the commerce of the Republic of the United Netherlands", in which the causes of the (former) prosperity of the republic are investigated: natural and physical causes, moral and political causes (the wisdom and prudence of the administration), and external causes. "The substantial benefits resulting from religious toleration, political liberty, and the freedom of industry have seldom, indeed, been more clearly set forth than in this dissertation" (McCulloch). It is stated that the main cause of the decline of Dutch commerce, so obvious after the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle of 1748, is the heavy tax burden. The plan includes the diminution of taxes by the introduction of a system of free port, though with some limitations. The proposal was presented by the stadtholder William IV, Prince of Orange (1711-51), to the States-General, who ordered that the report be printed. Though the title mentions the stadtholder only, it is a collective work whose authors included the prince's adviser De Larrey and the Amsterdam merchants Thomas Hope and Marselis. The prososals were not put into effect because of the high costs of the long wars. - Also published in English the same year as "Proposals made by the Prince of Orange for redressing and amending the trade of the Republic". LEUTERBREUVER (R.P. Chr.)

First edition of the author and magistrate's most important social tract. As the principle judge of the Bow Street Police Court, Fielding drafted several bills to reorganise and reform the constabulary, authorised frequent and successful raids against street gangs, highwaymen, and gaming houses, and formed the group of so-called "thief-takers" which became known as the "Bow Street runners", considered to be the first modern Metropolitan Police force. "Fielding was conservative in his social thought. He shared with his contemporaries in Britain, who remained unaffected by French radicalism until the latter decades of the century, a conviction that the stratified structure of the social order … [Click Below for Full Description]

Steller, Georg Wilhelm
St. Petersburg, 1751. [1],471pp. plus eighteen plates. Large quarto. Contemporary mottled calf, strongly rebacked with original spine laid down, spine ornately gilt. Boards rubbed, edges and corners worn. 20th-century bookplate on front pastedown, contemporary institutional ink stamp on front free endpaper. Light tanning, occasional spotting. Very good. Steller was the naturalist on Vitus Bering's second voyage. He wrote this essay, which describes the six North American animal species he discovered on the voyage, of which five are now extinct or severely endangered, while the expedition wintered on what would become Bering Island, where Bering and half of the crew died of scurvy. The manatee described here and named after him was hunted to extinction within thirty years of Steller's discovery - its only habitat was unfortunately close to the sea route charted by Bering and quickly exploited by fur traders and seal hunters. Three of the plates bound at the rear are the first representations of Steller's sea cow. The text was edited by Gerhard Friedrich Müller after Steller's untimely death when he was jailed for fomenting rebellion in Kamchatka and succumbed to a fever upon his release. Steller's essay appears in this volume at pages 289-398; other contributors include Euler on Fermat's theorem, Kratzenstein on navigation and the perpetual clock, and Lomonosov on the anemometer. An exceedingly scarce early work on Alaska, having only appeared once at auction, at the Martin Greene sale, where it brought $17,500. LADA-MOCARSKI 4. WICKERSHAM 6118.

LA CONDAMINE, Charles Marie de.
Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1751. First edition of the official account of the scientific operations undertaken during the author's famous geodetic mission to Peru, in conjunction with Bouguer and Godin, to measure the meridian near the equator, and so settle the controversy between the Cartesians and Newtonians as to whether the earth was flattened or elongated at the poles. This famous expedition to the equinoctial regions of Spanish South America "had as its goal the verification of Newton's hypothesis on the flattening of the terrestrial globe in the polar regions and, thereby, the resolution of the controversy regarding the form of the earth that was then dividing French scientists. Maupertuis, Clairaut, and Le Monnier went to Lapland to measure several degrees of meridian at the arctic circle, while Godin, Bouguer, and La Condamine were sent to Peru, territory belonging to Philip V of Spain, in order to make the same measurement in the vicinity of the equator" (DSB XV, p. 27)). La Condamine left Paris on 14 April 1735, arriving in Quito (then in Peru) on 4 June. Work had scarcely begun when tension arose between Louis Godin, the head of the mission, and Piere Bouguer. Relations between the scientist gradually deteriorated and eventually the three were taking measurements and observations independently. The work was finally completed in 1743. The three men returned to Paris separately, La Condamine taking the longest and most dangerous route, south along the Amazon. After many difficulties La Condamine finally arrived in Paris on 23 February 1745, after an absence o … [Click Below for Full Description]

An unusual miscellany of six documents dating from between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries but compiled into this manuscript in the eighteenth century. The most recent document in the volume is a Representation, dated 19 March 1751, by José, Marqués de Aviles, outlining the difficulties in carrying out the Marqués de la Ensenada's survey (or catastro) in the north-western Spanish province of Galicia. The Marqués de la Ensenada was one of the most reformist of Spain's eighteenth century ministers. His catastro, carried out between 1752 and 1754, was the first step in what was intended to be the overhaul of Spain's taxation system whereby a multitude of taxes would be replaced by a single tax, the 'única contribución', which, paid proportionately and applicable to all, would ensure that the nobility and the Church would no longer be largely exempt from taxation. Ensenada's plans were thwarted when he himself was removed from power in 1754 but the results of his catastro, alongside documents such as this which highlight the economic plight of regions such as Galicia, constitute some of the most useful sources on Spain's eighteenth-century society. Addressed to a 'Don Federico', almost certainly the papal envoy Federico Borrome … [Click Below for Full Description]
