Remarkably rare Manila imprint, narrating the persecution of Jesuits in China. 1751. Manila. Imprenta de la Compañia de Jesus, Nicolas de la Cruz Bagay. In 4to. 3 ff. + 72. Twentieth century speckled calf, boards tooled in blind, spine gilt with lettering piece. Printed on rice paper. Title with minor marginal repairs, else a very good copy. First edition. The work deals with the persecution, arrest, imprisonment and execution of a group of Jesuit missionaries under the Qianlong Emperor. "During the violent outbreak of persecution in Fukien, in 1746, Hukwang and Kiangnan enjoyed a relative peace that lasted until the end of 1747 when two Jesuits working in Kiangnan, Antonio Jose Henriques and Tristano Francesco de Attimis, were arrested, condemned to death and executed" ("China Missions in crisis", Joseph Krahl). After De Attimis and Henriquez? capture, they were subdued to torture "De Attimis who was new in the mission and did not speak the language well, was not treated badly, but Henriques was cruelly tortured on several occasions", apparently Henriquez got the worst part. "Relatan las persecuciones sufridas por los cristianos en 1746 y años siguientes. La Relacion del P. simoens es relativa a la Provincia de Pekin." (Medina). The book is divided into chapters, entitled: "Principio de la persecucion, y castigos con que Dios en este tiempo afligio a los Chinas" [Origin of the persecution and punishments with which God in this time inflicted the Chinese]; "Persecucion del Kiamnan, y su autor. Prision de los Missioneros, y su examen" [Persecution of Kiamnan and its author...], in this particular chapter, there is a reference to Father Tristan de Attimis, by Father Juan de Sexas, that when the former was captured a map was found amongst his papers, a map arguably to be used for a premeditated rebellion; "La sentencia, y muerte a los venerables Padres" [The sentence and death, of the venerable Fathers]; "Breve noticia de la vida de los VV. PP. hasta su Martyrio...". The Jesuit presence in China underwent different periods with the local authorities, some of great favor and some less so. This chapter of the Sino-Jesuit relations is to be considered amongst the most agitated. The relations under the Manchu were overall excellent, especially under Kangxi, who had little hesitation to appoint the Jesuits as advisers on mapping and engineering. The persecution, martyrdom and imprisonment of these priests, was one of the few periods of unrest for the missionaries. Medina does not appear to have seen it. Palau mentions 4 ff. + 72 + 3 ff., which is not the collation for any copy we have found; in fact refers to a 1606 edition quoted by Nicolas Antonio, which would appear difficult as it was written after the events of 1748. The copy at the BNE collates as ours; the Yale copy says only 72. A very rare Manila imprint on rice paper. We could find no copy having been sold at auction and only a handful in institutions. Medina, Manila, 236 (quoting 2ff. instead of 3 ff. as in this copy). Palau, 309407.

Plate 57 - Black Frontiniac Grape

George Brookshaw (1751-1823)Illustrated plate from Pomona BritannicaLondon: 1804-1812Hand-colored aquatint engraving; Sheet size: 22 1/2" x 18"Excellent conditionThe publication of the ?Pomona? marked the re-emergence of the acclaimed artist into the public eye after a total disappearance of nearly a decade. A successful cabinetmaker with the patronage of the Prince of Wales, Brookshaw suddenly disappeared from view in the mid-1790?s, and with the ?Pomona? he not only trumpeted his return but demonstrated the skills he had acquired in a new metier: botanical art. Characterized by the highest standards of production and artistic quality, the superb illustrations that Brookshaw drew and engraved for the ?Pomona? remain perhaps the most sumptuous and distinctive of the early 19th century.Brookshaw?s fine illustrations make excellent use of the rich, modulated tones that the aquatint process creates. The elegantly arranged and richly colored fruits emerge from deep brown backgrounds or float on a softly mottled light ground, creating a presence unlike that of any other botanical illustrations. Brookshaw asserts in the preface that the Pomona Britannica was an enduring work created for the enjoyment and edification of ?succeeding generations.? The beauty and uniqueness of his illustrations guarantees the lasting value of this most exceptional work.

An Institute of the Laws of Scotland in Civil Rights

1751. Bankton, Andrew Macdowall, Lord [1685-1760]. An Institute of the Laws of Scotland in Civil Rights: With Observations Upon the Agreement or Diversity Between Them and the Laws of England. In Four Books. After the General Method of the Viscount of Stair's Institutions. Edinburgh, Printed by R. Fleming, for A. Kincaid and A. Donaldson, 1751-53. Three volumes. Folio (12" x 8"). Contemporary three-quarter calf over marbled boards, raised bands and lettering pieces to spine. Some rubbing and minor scuffing to boards and extremities, joints starting. Early armorial bookplates (of Alexander Thompson) to front pastedowns. Cracks near front and rear hinges of text blocks, small tears and chips to margins of a few leaves, larger chip to fore-edge of leaf in Volume I with minor loss to side-notes. Contemporary annotations in a few places, interiors otherwise clean. A nice set. * Only edition. With side-notes and comprehensive indexes. The 1707 Act of Union compelled Scottish and English jurists to comprehend each other's legal systems. As Bankton put it, "now, since the union of the two kingdoms, there is such an intercourse between subjects of South and North Britain, that it must be of great moment that the laws of both be generally understood, and their agreement or diversity attended to; so that people, in their mutual correspondence, may regulate themselves accordingly" (Preface). As one would expect of an eighteenth-century Scottish jurist, the arrangement of the Institute is strongly influenced by the Institutes of Justinian. "A monument in the history of European thought; the acme of the age of reason; a prime motive force in undermining the ancien régime and in heralding the French Revolution; a permanent source for all aspects of eighteenth-century civilization" (PMM). This famous French work that spanned close to thirty years in the making, originated in a French translation of Ephraim Chamber’s Cyclopaedia, begun in 1743 and finished in 1745 by John Mills, an Englishman resident in France. Mills, along with his learned companion, an unknown German writer, Gottfried Selle, applied to the Paris publisher Lebreton to publish the work in four volumes. Mills and Lebreton disputed constantly, so much so that when Mills brought an action against him in regards to his demands for an account, Lebreton pronounced the privilege between them informal, and obtained another one. Mills was despoiled of the work he had both planned and executed and had to return to England. The first volume still refers to Chambers ‘Dictionnaire’ as its main source. The French publisher’s then offered the work to Diderot, who came highly recommended after his well received Dictionnaire universel de medicine, had been published in 1743-45. Diderot found the work handed to him badly composed and full of errors. He then proposed and finally persuaded the publishers to undertake a far more original and comprehensive work. The work was to form eight volumes with at least 600 plates. His friend D’Alembert undertook to edit the mathematics, and at least twenty or more contributors were allotted to various subjects. The contributors were among the major intellectual figures of the day and included such notables as Rembrandt, Rousseau, Voltaire, Montesquieu, Turgot and Buffon. The first volume was published in July 1751, and delivered to the subscribers in August. The second volume appeared in January 1752. "Each volume as it appeared caused a sensation throughout Europe. The court, the church, the judiciary were outraged; the number of subscribers, originally one thousand, rose to four thousand. In 1759, the seven volumes so far published were banned by the French Attorney-General and condemned by the Pope" (PMM). Despite all this, this great work continued to be published by Lebreton until 1765, after which date Panckoucke continued with a four-volum [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Über einen elektrischen Telegraphen

Quart. Unter Rückenfalz geheftet. S. 401-416, mit 2 gestochenen Kupfertafeln. Erste Ausgabe. Selten. - Kirchner, 490. Poggendorff II, 954. Wheeler Gift 709.

        Plate 50 - Black Muscadine
