Portrait engraving by François Morellon de la Cave (fl. 1700-1755) after Andrea Soldi (1703-after 1771)

[?Paris]. 1751. The composer is depicted half-length holding a piece of music manuscirpt and a quill pen. 236 x 184 mm. A fine impression on laid paper. Staining to blank lower right area extending into image; several very small nicks to edges; minor repair to lower right corner; some abrasion to verso; trimmed to plate mark. . "Though consistently acknowledged as one of the greatest composers of his age, his reputation from his death to the early 20th century rested largely on the knowledge of a small number of orchestral works and oratorios, Messiah in particular. In fact, he contributed to every musical genre current in his time, both vocal and instrumental. The composition of operas, mainly on Italian librettos, dominated the earlier part of his career, and are the finest (though not the most typical) of their kind. In his later years his commitment to large-scale vocal works, usually with a strong dramatic element, found a more individual outlet in English oratorio, a genre that he invented and established."

"ONE OF THE GREAT CLASSIC OF MEDICINE" - First Edition, First Issue, without the errata on the verso of the last leaf (F 8), Complete! - - "Percussion of the abdomen as a means of distinguishing between tympanites and ascites dates back into antiquity, but percussion of the thorax starts with Leopold Auenbrugger whose Inventum Novum ex Percussione Thoracis Humani was published in I76i, the same year as Morgagni's great work on pathological anatomy. Auenbrugger's discovery of percussion was not entirely fortuitous for his father was an innkeeper, and he must have watched men tapping the wine barrels to find out how full or empty they were. - He was also a good musician and wrote the libretto of an opera (Antonio Salieri's - The chimney sweep) for which he was ennobled by the Empress in I784, so that evidently he had a good ear for sound. - Born at Gratz in I722, he studied medicine in Vienna under Van Swieten, graduating in 1752, and later became physician to the Spanish Hospital in Vienna where for seven years 'amid laborious and tedious exertions' he tested his method of percussion by dissections whenever possible and experimented on cadavers by filling the chest with water. Auenbrugger practised direct or immediate percussion, striking the patient's chest, covered by a shirt, with the finger tips of his gloved hand, first during normal breathing and then in full inspiration. He described the natural percussion sound in different parts of the chest, noting that over the space occupied by the heart the sound loses part of its natural clearness and becomes dull. His observations related mainly to lung disease, but two sections dealt with heart disease, namely section XLVI on dropsy of the pericardium and section XLVIII on aneurysm of the heart. He divided dropsy of the pericardium into serous and purulent varieties, noting a completely deadened percussion sound such as obtained by striking a fleshy limb. He also described the symptoms such as fainting, unequal pulse, swelling of the neck, and a tendency to fall asleep while sitting with the body inclined forwards, later described as the pillow sign by Blechmann. He defined aneurysm of the heart as a condition of overdistension of its cavities when they became unequal to propel their contents forward, and found a fleshy percussion sound over a considerable space in the region of the heart. - Auenbrugger's treatise proved to be premature as the anatomical conception of disease based on Morgagni took many years to permeate clinical medicine, so that percussion was virtually ignored by the majority of contemporary physicians, though Haller regarded it favourably and Stoil seems to have practised it in Vienna where others were hostile. - The treatise was twice republished in Latin and Roziere de la Chassagne included a French translation in his manual on pulmonary disease (I770), stating that though he had not used the method, it seemed free from danger! The credit of introducing percussion into clinical practice belongs to Corvisart who first learned of it from the works of Stoll whose aphorisms he had translated. He tested percussion in his clinic in Paris, described it in his famous textbook of i8o6, and published a second French translation of Auenbrugger's Inventum Novum in i8o8, together with his commentaries based on twenty years of experience." - "Auenbrugger's discovery had to wait half a century before it came into clinical use in Paris where it was soon overshadowed by Laennec's mediate auscultation which made him famous in his short lifetime. Nevertheless, percussion paved the way to physical diagnosis of heart disease, and as far as the heart is concerned Auenbrugger made fewer errors than Laennec. There is no doubt as to the important role of percussion of the heart in the preradiological era when great advances in cardiology were taking place, and I can do no better than to quote G. W. Balfour's Harveian Discourse of I887, in which he stated that nowadays when we can ascertain the dimensions of the heart and the state of its orifices with a precision which is almost perfect, we can scarcely realize the state of chaos into which ignorance of percussion and auscultation would plunge us!" D.Evan Bedford, Auenbrugger's contribution to cardiology History of percussion of the heart. British Heart_Journal, 197I, 33, pp.8I7-821. - - Both the first and second issues of Auenbrugger's classic have been rare books for over a hundred years, the first issue especially so. - Garrison & Morton No. 2672; Norman 81; Lilly, p. 127; Heirs of Hippocrates 954; Willius & Keys, pp. 190-213; Osler 1863; Bibliotheca Medica, L'art Ancien S.A.Zurich, Cat. 21/34 "Only a small number of copies were published"; Balfour, G. W. (I887). On the evolution of cardiac diagnosis from Harvey's days till now. Edinburgh Medical Journal, 32, 1065; P.J. Bishop: A Bibliography of Auenbrugger's Inventum novum (1761).         A CONTINUATION OF THE ESSAY UPON FIELD- HUSBANDRY, AS IT IS, OR MAY BE ORDERED IN NEW- ENGLAND.

New London: Timothy Green . 1751 - [2],32pp. 16mo. Modern blue cloth, gilt-lettered spine. Titlepage trimmed along top edge, touching the top of the first two words of the title. Hole (perhaps a paper flaw) in blank inner margin of the titlepage, not affecting text. Old dampstain throughout. Good. The rare third part of the landmark series of six essays on American agriculture by Jared Eliot. Though the title indicates that the text is limited to New England, Eliot discusses the state of "field husbandry" throughout the colonies, including New York and the South. The DAB emphasizes that for a long time these essays were "the most widely read and prized agricultural essays in America." This third essay contains much on the growing of grains, including wheat, barley, oats, and millet, as well as "Indian corn," and also discusses the need to drain swampland in order to reclaim it for crops. Through his agricultural essays Eliot helped to introduce the concept of soil conservation in the British colonies, and was largely responsible for introducing the silk industry to colonial America. Over the course of the six essays Eliot dismisses the opinion of some in Great Britain that the colonies are of little use. Eliot argues that as the colonial population increases, the number and quality of goods the colonies are able to send to Great Britain will also increase. But more importantly, the demand for British goods will likewise rise, giving Great Britain the double benefit of a greater supply network and a larger market. Eliot is also remembered fondly in New Haven for establishing Yale's first endowed fund to buy books, a legacy which funds purchases to this day. EVANS 6666. NAIP w037582. Lindroth III, 191-92. Beskriver bl.a. Malmö, Ängelholm, Christianstad og Kullen. First edition. "Linné's travels from the 18th century are among the most loved and read of his writings.         Barbarian Cruelty; Or, an Accurate and Impartial Narrative of the Unparallel'd Sufferings and almost Incredible Hardships of the British Captives, belonging to the Inspector Privateer, Capt. Richard Veale, Commander, during their Slavery under the Arbitrary and Despotic Government of Muley Abdallah, Emperor of Fez and Morocco Third Edition. [Bound together with:] A Supplement to the Barbarian Cruelty

London: R. Walker, 1751 - Octavo (171 × 102 mm). Recent sprinkled half calf to style, red morocco label, raised bands with gilt rules, small floral tools to compartments, marbled sides. Somewhat browned, repairs to verso of 2 plates, no loss of text or image; a nicely presented copy of an uncommon book. Portrait, 5 folding plates. Third edition of the main text, first published in the same year, first edition of the supplement which contains the accounts of four of Troughton's fellow captives. "A scarce account of the adventures of the survivors of the Privateer Inspector, which was wrecked on the coast of Morocco" (Cox). One of the most infamous incidents involving the enslavement of British seamen occurred in 1746 when the ship Inspector, was wrecked in Tangier Bay, "All eighty-seven survivors were taken into captivity It was five long years before Troughton and his surviving comrades were brought back by the British Government" (Milton, White Gold p269). Troughton sets out to relate in detail, "not only an Account of the various Hardships which our now happy ransomed Slaves were obliged to undergo under the tyrannical Treatment of their respective Task-Masters, or Overseers, but a succinct Account likewise of the Country in which they were taken Captives, and of the wild and extravagant Measures which are occasionally pursued by the Emperor of the Place, whose Will alone is his Law and whose Orders, however irrational, inhuman, or unaccountable they may be, must, on no Pretext whatever, be contested or disobeyed flattering ourselves that a Narrative of such Variety of shocking Incidents, and unheard-of Cruelties, will of themselves by sufficiently amusing" (Author's Preface). So outlandish was his tale that Troughton went to great lengths construct an effective "strategy of authentication" (Colley, Captives p90). "He swore to the authenticity of his captivity narrative in front of its printer, and before the Lord Mayor of London himself, Sir Francis Cockayne. He even took twenty-one of his fellow sailors and former comrades in captivity along with him to the Mansion House to 'attest to the accuracy of his account.' Their combined testimonies, which bore the names of the seamen able to write and the marks of those who could not, were inserted as a preface to [the] published text, in a transparent attempt to reassure and convince readers before they embarked on it." Colley, Captives: Britain, Empire and the World, 1600-1850; Cox I, p. 382; Milton, White Gold: the extraordinary story of Thomas Pellow.

The Grand Magazine of Magazines; or a Public Register of Literature and Amusement

      M. Cooper, London 1751 - M. Cooper, London, 1751. January - June 1751, title-page dated 1750. 8º, pp. 492 + index. Complete with copper-engraved frontispiece, portraits of Dryden and Pope, and three folding copper-plates, one of which is a map of the Fench Settlements in North America. This volume is notable for the printing in the April issue of Gray's "Elegy written in a Country Church-yard". Gray had completed the poem in 1750, and sent a copy to his friend Horace Walpole, who had circulated it amongst the London literati. It seems that Walpole had a better understanding of the poem's importance than Gray himself. In 1751 it emerged that the publishers of the Grand Magazine were intending to published a pirated version of the poem. Gray and Walpole then persuaded Robert Dodsley, the publisher, to print and publish Gray's poem to pre-empt the pirated version. The subsequent success of his poem seems to have surprised the author, who was perhaps unconscious of the power of his own poetic imagery. Clean fresh copy, a little light browning/offsetting to folding plates. In a plain modern binding of quarter calf on paper-covered boards. Scarce.
