DELLE ASSICURAZIONI MARITTIME. Trattato dell'Avvocato Angelo Baldasseroni. Seconda edizione nuovamente riordinata e notabilmente accresciuta e corretta dall'Autore. Tomi I - III.

Opera dedicata a Vincenzo Salucci. Pg.472; IV, 572; VI, 340. Tagli a spruzzo in rosso. Tre vignette calcografiche ripetute ai tre frontespizi. Fresco esemplare, ben marginoso.

An Enquiry Concerning The Principles Of Morals

London; Printed for A. Millar; 1751; - 1st edition, 1st issue with L3 uncancelled;253 pp,3pp ads; 61/2 x 41/4 "; errata leaf is present; original boards, attractively and expertly rebacked, with newer pastedowns & endpapers, covers bordered with double gilt rulers, spine with raised bands, red morocco label: "Hume's Moral Essays", corners skillfully repaired; contemporary boards show some wear but are quite presentable; Hume, perhaps the greatest philosopher of the 18th century, considered this book to be "incomparably the best" of all of his writings. Hume's moral theory represents a transition between the moral sense doctrine of the Scottish school of common sense philosophy and the 19th century utilitarian thinkers. Hume's moral theory is in many ways parallel to his general epistomology in that he shows the limits of reason and that moral judgements are based on utility and habit and that morality is nothing more than aesthetic values. Hume also had a great influence on Kant and Nietzsche in the 19th century and Wittgenstein and the logical positivists of the 20th century; A sound, tight and sturdy copy of one of the great books of western philosophy, internally clean and well-preserved. Quite scarce. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The works of Alexander Pope Esq. In nine volumes complete. With his last corrections, additions, and improvements; as they were delivered to the editor a little before his death: together with the commentaries and notes of W. Warburton.

London: printed for J. and P. Knapton, H. Lintot, J. and R. Tonson, and S. Draper, 1751 - Nine vols., 8vo, contemporary calf, neatly rebacked. First edition. The much delayed but eagerly anticipated "death-bed" edition of Pope's works, edited and annotated by William Warburton, to whom Pope had left the copyright in all his published works. No modern editor can afford to ignore Warburton's handiwork, but his influence on the text of Pope's writings has long been widely condemned, most notably by Pope's bibliographer, R. W. Griffith: "As an editor of Pope Warburton, early or late, is to be lifted down from any pedestal of respect, and is to be treated with a great deal of skepticism and very little of reverence" ("Early Warburton? or Late Warburton?" in Studies in English, University of Texas, Vol. XXIV, 1944). There is ample evidence, however, that the format and presentation of this edition was in accordance with Pope's last wishes. "It appeared not as a quarto but as an octavo in nine volumes. We can see now that that was not a betrayal of Pope's intentions but a realization of them. Warburton produced the edition for a general readership that would always have been the result of the grand edition in quarto. Foxon, Pope and the Early Eighteenth-Century Book Trade, p. 152. Aside from the general title-page in Vol. I, each volume has an individual title-page, with a brief description of the contents. With an engraved frontispiece in Vol. I, and 23 further plates. In very good condition. Griffith 643-651. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Portrait engraving by Francois Morellon de la Cave (fl. 1700-1755) after Andrea Soldi (1703-after 1771)

[?Paris] 1751. The composer is depicted half-length holding a piece of music manuscirpt and a quill pen. 236 x 184 mm. A fine impression on laid paper. Staining to blank lower right area extending into image; several very small nicks to edges; minor repair to lower right corner; some abrasion to verso; trimmed to plate mark.. "Though consistently acknowledged as one of the greatest composers of his age, his reputation from his death to the early 20th century rested largely on the knowledge of a small number of orchestral works and oratorios, Messiah in particular. In fact, he contributed to every musical genre current in his time, both vocal and instrumental. The composition of operas, mainly on Italian librettos, dominated the earlier part of his career, and are the finest (though not the most typical) of their kind. In his later years his commitment to large-scale vocal works, usually with a strong dramatic element, found a more individual outlet in English oratorio, a genre that he invented and established."         A View of the Courts of Wards and Liveries, with the officers, servants and other persons there assembled

Vetusta Monumenta. 1751. - Copper engraving. Original outline colour. Size: 58 x 44 cm. (23 x 17½ inches). Very good condition. Crisp and clean, good margins. The lower corners are creased, repairs on rear along the plate lined. Beautiful engraving of the Court of Wards and Liveries in session, eleven men seated round the table, while others look on. The engraver, George Vertue has copied this from a contemporary original. He identifies Lord Burghley as the man at the head of the table and, in a lengthy text below the engraving, he deduces who the other figures seated round the table are. In the days before photography, engravings such as this were how visual historical records were kept. George Vertue, was employed by the Society of Antiquaries for this task, and made many engravings from paintings, plans and maps.

Portrait engraving by François Morellon de la Cave (fl. 1700-1755) after Andrea Soldi (1703-after 1771)

[?Paris]. 1751. The composer is depicted half-length holding a piece of music manuscirpt and a quill pen. 236 x 184 mm. A fine impression on laid paper. Staining to blank lower right area extending into image; several very small nicks to edges; minor repair to lower right corner; some abrasion to verso; trimmed to plate mark. . In his later years his commitment to large-scale vocal works, usually with a strong dramatic element, found a more individual outlet in English oratorio, a genre that he invented and established."

"ONE OF THE GREAT CLASSIC OF MEDICINE" - First Edition, First Issue, without the errata on the verso of the last leaf (F 8), Complete! - - "Percussion of the abdomen as a means of distinguishing between tympanites and ascites dates back into antiquity, but percussion of the thorax starts with Leopold Auenbrugger whose Inventum Novum ex Percussione Thoracis Humani was published in I76i, the same year as Morgagni's great work on pathological anatomy. Auenbrugger's discovery of percussion was not entirely fortuitous for his father was an innkeeper, and he must have watched men tapping the wine barrels to find out how full or empty they were. - He was also a good musician and wrote the libretto of an opera (Antonio Salieri's - The chimney sweep) for which he was ennobled by the Empress in I784, so that evidently he had a good ear for sound. - Born at Gratz in I722, he studied medicine in Vienna under Van Swieten, graduating in 1752, and later became physician to the Spanish Hospital in Vienna where for seven years 'amid laborious and tedious exertions' he tested his method of percussion by dissections whenever possible and experimented on cadavers by filling the chest with water. Auenbrugger practised direct or immediate percussion, striking the patient's chest, covered by a shirt, with the finger tips of his gloved hand, first during normal breathing and then in full inspiration. He described the natural percussion sound in different parts of the chest, noting that over the space occupied by the heart the sound loses part of its natural clearness and becomes dull. His observations related mainly to lung disease, but two sections dealt with heart disease, namely section XLVI on dropsy of the pericardium and section XLVIII on aneurysm of the heart. He divided dropsy of the pericardium into serous and purulent varieties, noting a completely deadened percussion sound such as obtained by striking a fleshy limb. He also described the symptoms such as fainting, unequal pulse, swelling of the neck, and a tendency to fall asleep while sitting with the body inclined forwards, later described as the pillow sign by Blechmann. He defined aneurysm of the heart as a condition of overdistension of its cavities when they became unequal to propel their contents forward, and found a fleshy percussion sound over a considerable space in the region of the heart. - Auenbrugger's treatise proved to be premature as the anatomical conception of disease based on Morgagni took many years to permeate clinical medicine, so that percussion was virtually ignored by the majority of contemporary physicians, though Haller regarded it favourably and Stoil seems to have practised it in Vienna where others were hostile. - The treatise was twice republished in Latin and Roziere de la Chassagne included a French translation in his manual on pulmonary disease (I770), stating that though he had not used the method, it seemed free from danger! The credit of introducing percussion into clinical practice belongs to Corvisart who first learned of it from the works of Stoll whose aphorisms he had translated. He tested percussion in his clinic in Paris, described it in his famous textbook of i8o6, and published a second French translation of Auenbrugger's Inventum Novum in i8o8, together with his commentaries based on twenty years of experience." - "Auenbrugger's discovery had to wait half a century before it came into clinical use in Paris where it was soon overshadowed by Laennec's mediate auscultation which made him famous in his short lifetime. Nevertheless, percussion paved the way to physical diagnosis of heart disease, and as far as the heart is concerned Auenbrugger made fewer errors than Laennec. There is no doubt as to the important role of percussion of the heart in the preradiological era when great advances in cardiology were taking place, and I can do no better than to quote G. W. Balfour's Harveian Discourse of I887, in which he stated that nowadays when we can ascertain the dimensions of the heart and the state of its orifices with a precision which is almost perfect, we can scarcely realize the state of chaos into which ignorance of percussion and auscultation would plunge us!" D.Evan Bedford, Auenbrugger's contribution to cardiology History of percussion of the heart. British Heart_Journal, 197I, 33, pp.8I7-821. - - Both the first and second issues of Auenbrugger's classic have been rare books for over a hundred years, the first issue especially so. - Garrison & Morton No. 2672; Norman 81; Lilly, p. 127; Heirs of Hippocrates 954; Willius & Keys, pp. 190-213; Osler 1863; Bibliotheca Medica, L'art Ancien S.A.Zurich, Cat. 21/34 "Only a small number of copies were published"; Balfour, G.
