Portraits and Pedigrees of the Most Celebrated Racers from Paintings by Eminent Artists, with portraits of the Jockeys.

Arundel and London, Thomas Butler, 1751-1753].. Oblong folio (310 x 370 mm). 30 engraved sheets, with 30 (of 34) portraits of thoroughbred race-horses (lacking nos. 10, 15, 31 and 34). Old half calf with marbled covers.. A spectacular, exceedingly rare album illustrating the starting point of horse racing in England, when native mares were crossbred with imported oriental stallions. W. S. Sparrow notes, in 1922, "rare, no doubt, because so many copies have been broken up in order that the prints might be sold one by one". The integral engraved text surrounding the image of horse and jockey provides the history and breeding of the subjects of the portraits. The first three horses depicted in this charming album are direct descendants of the three foundation stallions of the modern Thoroughbred breed, namely the Godolphin Arabian (Bajazet, plate 2), the Darley Arabian (Childers, plate 3), and the Byerly Turk (Old Partner, plate 1). All of the other 23 race horses described here trace back to these three stallions just imported into England from the Middle East, as well. According to Pickerell, "all 500,000 of the world's thoroughbred racehorses are descended from 28 ancestors, born in the 18th century", of which, according to Peter Willett, about 50% have Arabian bloodlines, with the remainder evenly divided between Turkoman and Barb breeding. - James Seymour is recognized as one of the earliest English sporting artists. He was the son of a wealthy goldsmith and diamond merchant who supplied the plate for racing trophies. Seymour was passionate about racing and, in addition to drawing and painting them, he is believed to have owned racehorses himself; he was considered one of the most eminent horse painters of his age, and this important and rare album of charming engravings offers a true sampling of his work. - With armorial bookplate with cipher of George Simon Harcourt, Earl Harcourt (1736-1809) on front pastedown. Some early ms. annotations at beginning, some tears and repairs extending into text, first plate laid down. - Sparrow, p. 77. Cf. Lane British Racing Prints Seymour 2, nos. 1-7, 11-18, 20-24, 26, 28-33. Mellon Sporting and Animal Prints Seymour 13, nos. 1-7, 11-18, 20-24, 26, 28-33. Cf. Siltzer British Sporting Prints, 389.

        Miscellanies ?

London: Printed for Charles Bathurst ..., 1751. Second 1751 edition. 12 vols. 12mo. Ccontemporary calf, gilt spines, raised bands, red leather labels. Each volume with the armorial bookplate of EDWARD GIBBON (2nd state). From the Library of Edward Gibbon: a Set of Swift Although lacking the 13th volume, with the notable title of TRAVELS INTO SEVERAL REMOTE NATIONS OF THE WORLD, it has been thus since at least 1936, when it was catalogued in the Erle-Drax Library by the bookseller C. Howes. According to Keynes: "During the summer of 1935 a book sale took place at a small auction room in Ashford, Kent. The books were from Holnest Park, Dorset, the home of the Erle-Drax family, and there were twenty-five books (57 volumes) containing Gibbon's book-plate ... The book-plate in all of these is a close copy of the engraving in the Lausanne library, but is engraved on a larger piece of copper, as the plate-mark shows ... " As one of the books was Burke's LETTER TO A MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY (1791), "these books must have been acquired by Gibbon near the close of his life, and they may represent books bought during the final six months in England before his death. How they came to be at Holnest Park is not known ..." (THE LIBRARY OF EDWARD GIBBON, pp. 34-35).

[2], xxxvi, 280, xvi pp. Illustrated with 3 engraved folding maps and 3 engraved plates (2 folding). Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1751. BOUND WITH: _____________. [12], 266, x pp. Illustrated with 3 engraved folding plates. 4to., 250 x 197 mm, bound in contemporary French cats-paw calf, red and tan leather title-labels on spine. Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1751. First Edition. Charles Marie de la Condamine, French mathematician, physicist, explorer, and geographer was sent to Ecuador in 1735 by Louis XV and the French Royal Academy of Sciences to measure the Earth at the equator. Arriving in Ecuador, he sailed up the Esmeraldas River and then climbed over the Andes Mountains, arriving in Quito on June 4, 1736. He remained in South America for a total of ten years, doing scientific work and mapping the Andean territories and much of the Amazon River. Having run out of money during his ten year stay La Condamine was forced to return to France by crossing the Andes and then rafting down the Amazon River. This was a dangerous trip in the mid-eighteenth century, but because of the observations he recorded, his trip represents "the first scientific exploration of the Amazon." The scientific upshot of La Condamine's observations and measurements along the equator was the unambiguous proof that the Earth was indeed a spheroid, flattened at the poles, as had been theorized by Newton. These three books not only provide important scientific information, but also offer a unique and valuable account of Ecuador and the Andean terrain during the eighteenth century. A fine copy. Borba de Moraes, p. 447. Sabin 38490.

Berlin, C. G. Nicolai, 1751. 8:o. (32),182,1-48 pp. & 1 folded engraved plate.

Contemporary marbled boards, heavily worn, edges sprinkled red. Spine defective. Textblock with foxing and dampstaining throughout. Old marginal note on p- 157. Contemporary illegible signature and an acquisition note dated 1755. Bookplate of Carl Jedvard Bonde. From Ericsberg Castle in Sweden. Bibliotheca Walleriana 12189. First Swedish edition published in 1748. Wallerius sent corrections and complementary additions to this first German translation. In "Hydrologia" Wallerius attempts to enlarge the three realms of nature with a fourth one, the realm of water, which is divided in accordance with the model which had been used for the animal, plant and mineral kingdoms. "Hydrologia" must be seen as a pioneer work of its kind, but unlike "Mineralogia" it did not result in any imitators. It stands alone as a monument representing a zeal to systematize in the spirit of Wollff and Linnaeus, taken to absurd levels. Last page following with a separate title leaf lacking impressum: "Wohlgemeynte Gedanken über den Dannemarks-Gesundbrunnen" and is a translation of Wallerius "Wälmente tanckar om Dannemarcks hälsso-brunn" (1737). The spa was situated to the east of Uppsala in the parish of Danmark. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Portrait engraving by François Morellon de la Cave (fl. 1700-1755) after Andrea Soldi (1703-after 1771)

[?Paris]. 1751. The composer is depicted half-length holding a piece of music manuscirpt and a quill pen. 236 x 184 mm. A fine impression on laid paper. Staining to blank lower right area extending into image; several very small nicks to edges; minor repair to lower right corner; some abrasion to verso; trimmed to plate mark. . "Though consistently acknowledged as one of the greatest composers of his age, his reputation from his death to the early 20th century rested largely on the knowledge of a small number of orchestral works and oratorios, Messiah in particular. In fact, he contributed to every musical genre current in his time, both vocal and instrumental. The composition of operas, mainly on Italian librettos, dominated the earlier part of his career, and are the finest (though not the most typical) of their kind. In his later years his commitment to large-scale vocal works, usually with a strong dramatic element, found a more individual outlet in English oratorio, a genre that he invented and established."         DELLE ASSICURAZIONI MARITTIME. Trattato dell'Avvocato Angelo Baldasseroni. Seconda edizione nuovamente riordinata e notabilmente accresciuta e corretta dall'Autore. Tomi I - III.

Opera dedicata a Vincenzo Salucci. Pg.472; IV, 572; VI, 340. Tagli a spruzzo in rosso. Tre vignette calcografiche ripetute ai tre frontespizi. Fresco esemplare, ben marginoso.

An Enquiry Concerning The Principles Of Morals

London; Printed for A. Millar; 1751; - 1st edition, 1st issue with L3 uncancelled;253 pp,3pp ads; 61/2 x 41/4 "; errata leaf is present; original boards, attractively and expertly rebacked, with newer pastedowns & endpapers, covers bordered with double gilt rulers, spine with raised bands, red morocco label: "Hume's Moral Essays", corners skillfully repaired; contemporary boards show some wear but are quite presentable; Hume, perhaps the greatest philosopher of the 18th century, considered this book to be "incomparably the best" of all of his writings. Hume's moral theory represents a transition between the moral sense doctrine of the Scottish school of common sense philosophy and the 19th century utilitarian thinkers. Hume's moral theory is in many ways parallel to his general epistomology in that he shows the limits of reason and that moral judgements are based on utility and habit and that morality is nothing more than aesthetic values. Hume also had a great influence on Kant and Nietzsche in the 19th century and Wittgenstein and the logical positivists of the 20th century; A sound, tight and sturdy copy of one of the great books of western philosophy, internally clean and well-preserved. Quite scarce. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The works of Alexander Pope Esq. In nine volumes complete. With his last corrections, additions, and improvements; as they were delivered to the editor a little before his death: together with the commentaries and notes of W. Warburton.

London: printed for J. and P. Knapton, H. Lintot, J. and R. Tonson, and S. Draper, 1751 - Nine vols., 8vo, contemporary calf, neatly rebacked. First edition. The much delayed but eagerly anticipated "death-bed" edition of Pope's works, edited and annotated by William Warburton, to whom Pope had left the copyright in all his published works. No modern editor can afford to ignore Warburton's handiwork, but his influence on the text of Pope's writings has long been widely condemned, most notably by Pope's bibliographer, R. W. Griffith: "As an editor of Pope Warburton, early or late, is to be lifted down from any pedestal of respect, and is to be treated with a great deal of skepticism and very little of reverence" ("Early Warburton? or Late Warburton?" in Studies in English, University of Texas, Vol. XXIV, 1944). There is ample evidence, however, that the format and presentation of this edition was in accordance with Pope's last wishes. "It appeared not as a quarto but as an octavo in nine volumes. We can see now that that was not a betrayal of Pope's intentions but a realization of them. Warburton produced the edition for a general readership that would always have been the result of the grand edition in quarto. Foxon, Pope and the Early Eighteenth-Century Book Trade, p. 152. Aside from the general title-page in Vol. I, each volume has an individual title-page, with a brief description of the contents. With an engraved frontispiece in Vol. I, and 23 further plates. In very good condition. Griffith 643-651. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Portrait engraving by Francois Morellon de la Cave (fl. 1700-1755) after Andrea Soldi (1703-after 1771)

[?Paris] 1751. The composer is depicted half-length holding a piece of music manuscirpt and a quill pen. 236 x 184 mm. A fine impression on laid paper. Staining to blank lower right area extending into image; several very small nicks to edges; minor repair to lower right corner; some abrasion to verso; trimmed to plate mark.. In his later years his commitment to large-scale vocal works, usually with a strong dramatic element, found a more individual outlet in English oratorio, a genre that he invented and established."         The Laugh - Bubs complements to Ralffo.

London 1751 - Broadside, oblong folio, engraved, printed one side as issued A Satire on the divided loyalty of Bubb Doddington who had been made Treasurer of the Navy by George II in 1744, but resigned to follow the Prince of Wales. Upon the Prince's death he tried to return his loyalty to George II. In this satire he is shown approaching the King, whilst in the background is a parallel of divided loyalty. Doddington had invited the American born writer, James Ralph, editor of the "Remembrancer" to dinner. He sent his Welsh driver to collect him but turned up with a cart. This was shortly rectified by the rapid replacement of a coach. Both cart and coach are shown in the background of this print. BM. No. 3123 [Attributes: Hard Cover]
