This is a handbook on criminal law and procedure for lawyers and legislators in Slovakia, then part of the Kingdom of Hungary. At this time Hungarian criminal law was identical in most respects to that of Austria and the German states. It even adopted some of the Enlightenment's ideas about the use of torture. However, it has a more conservative view of adultery and "crimes against nature." It even has a large number of laws concerning vampirism and witchcraft. OCLC locates 5 copies in North American law libraries (Columbia, Harvard, UC-Berkeley, University of Michigan, Yale). Not in the British Museum Catalogue.

The history of our national debts and taxes, from the year MDCLXXXVIII, to the present year MDCCLI

London: M Cooper, [1751]-1753. A very good copy. First edition. Higgs 98. Kress 5117. Goldsmiths 8631. A comprehensive and detailed history of British taxes from 1688 to 1751. 'I hope', writes Gordon, that 'this book will establish a maxim observed by all wise nations, but exploded by all wicked ministers, that the annual expence ought never to exceed the annual revenue; and that consequently, when an increase of the former becomes necessary for securing or vindicating the honour or rights of a nation, the latter ought to be increased in proportion, if necessary, even to the utmost the people can spare from their daily subsistence. It will likewise, I hope, establish another maxim, which is this, that when the rich men of any country (who in all free countries must have the government in their hands) endeavour to spare themselves by taxing the poor, they will always at last find themselves disappointed, and in the mean time will ruin the trade and credit of their country'.

Maupertuis demonstrates in these two books he was a pioneer in the science of life and an important milestone in the evolution of genetic and hereditary theories. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

1751 - Berlin, C. G. Nicolai, 1751. 8:o. (32),48,1-182 pp. & 1 folded engraved plate. Contemporary sprinkled calf with raised bands, gilt spine, brown label and red sprinkled edges. Minor worming at bottom of spine and joints. Slight foxing and some browning in places. Dampstains in outer and lower margin in the beginning and towards the end. Bibliotheca Walleriana 12189. Wallerius sent corrections and complementary additions to improve this first German translation. In "Hydrologia" Wallerius attempts to enlarge the three realms of nature with a fourth one, the realm of water, which is divided in accordance with the model which had been used for the animal, plant and mineral kingdoms. "Hydrologia" must be seen as a pioneer work of its kind, but unlike "Mineralogia" it did not result in any imitators. It stands alone as a monument representing a zeal to systematize in the spirit of Wolff and Linnaeus, taken to absurd levels. Final pagination with a separate title leaf lacking impressum: "Wohlgemeynte Gedanken über den Dannemarks-Gesundbrunnen" This is a translation of Wallerius "Wälmente tanckar om Dannemarcks hälsso-brunn" (1737). The spa was situated to the east of Uppsala in the parish of Danmark. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Edition originale. Deslandes', p. 153-161. (Colon, 'Siecle des Lumieres', 51:449.         A Free Enquiry into the Miraculous Powers, which are supposed to have subsisted in the Christian Church, from the Earliest Ages through Several Successive Centuries. By which it is shewn, that We have no Sufficient Reason to believe, upon the Authority of the Primitive Fathers, that any such Powers were continued to the Church, after the Days of the Apostles. [Bound with] A Vindication of the Free Inquiry into the Miraculous Powers, which are supposed to have subsisted in the Christian Church, &c., from the Objections of Dr Dodwell and Dr Church. By the late Conyers Middleton

London, R. Manby and H.S. Cox, 1749 and 1751 - Small quarto, two volumes bound as one, [iv], xxxvi (last blank), 77 (Introductory Discourse with Postscript), [1] (advertisement), 232, [20] (index) pages, and [iv], 99 pages. Early full calf later skilfully rebacked by Riviere in period style (raised bands, with extensively gilt-decorated compartments, retaining the original title-label); leather on the front and rear panels slightly crazed, but with the original gilt rules and inner dentelles; all edges red; occasional foxing and offsetting; an excellent copy with a modern commercial bookplate on the verso of the flyleaf. The article on Conyers Middleton (1683-1750) by Leslie Stephen in the 'Dictionary of National Biography' is painstakingly (and almost painfully) informative. The English clergyman was no stranger to controversy; 'Serious imputations . have been made upon his literary honesty [he was accused of plagiarism] . Middleton was probably one of the few divines who can be fairly accused of conscious insincerity'. This book 'denied the credibility of the stories of miracles in periods subsequent to the first age of the church, attacked the character of the narrators, and explained the origin of the narratives by the general credulity of the times in which they arose. The book produced a lively controversy. Hume found that it had eclipsed the volume of essays (published in April 1748), which included his own argument against the credibility of miracles. Gibbon's temporary conversion to catholicism soon afterwards was chiefly due to a perusal of Middleton' (and there's a lot more where this came from!). From the sacred to the profane (relatively speaking), the note printed on the verso of the initial half-title has great period flavour: 'Dec. 12. 1748. Dr Middleton's "Free Inquiry &c." having been printed in such hast [sic], and at such a season of the year, that the sheets have not had sufficient time to dry, it is thought proper to give this notice to Gentlemen, not to have their books bound in less than two months or they will run the hazard of having them spoiled'.         The Satires of Persius

1751. PERSIUS. The Satires of Persius. Translated into English Verse; with some Occasional Notes; and the Original Text corrected. xxiv, 154, [2] pp. 8vo., 160 x 100 mm, bound in contemporary brown calf, gilt ruled, gilt stamped maroon morocco spine label. London: A Millar, 1751. |~||~||~||~| The Second Edition, to which is now prefixed "The Life of the Author." An elegant translation by Thomas Brewster of these satires, modeled on Lucilius and Horace, which preached Stoic values amidst the decadence of Nero's Rome, with special attention paid to Nero's court. Satire 1, for example, is an attack on the insincere and bombastic work of Nero's court poets. Mostly these satires concern various aspects of private life, encouraging good moral character and avoidance of sloth and vice. Spine invisibly repaired, still a very fine copy. Brüggemann, 661.

Stuttgart, 22. V. 1751. - 1 S. 8vo.

Philosophia botanica in qua explicantur fundamenta botanica cum definitionibus partium, exemplis terminorum, observationibus rariorum, adjectis figuris æneis.

1751 - Stockholm, L. L. Grefing, 1751. 8:o. (6),362 pp. & 9 engraved plates. With two woodcut illustrations in the text, numbered as plate X and XI.Early 19th-century half calf, rather worn, gilt decoration on spine in the form of a flower stem, tan label and sprinkled edges. Front flyleaf torn out. Signature cut in lower margin on title. Occasional minor spotting, impressions of dried plant parts on pp. 96-99 and 297-98. Blue stains in inner margin on pp. 180-81. Later stiff reinforcements in inner margin on pp. 354-55. Lacking portrait. Signatures.Soulsby A catalogue of the works of Linnæus 437. Krok Svensk botanisk litteratur 138. Published by G. Kiesewetter. The portrait of Linnaeus was evidently only added to a part of the edition. "Philosophia botanica", whose manuscript had been taken down by Pehr Löfling, is a considerably revised enlargement of "Fundamenta botanica" 1736. It is arranged in 365 paragraphs or aphorisms which are expounded in explanatory texts. The work establishes rules for a botanical theory and Linneaus also continues to develop his naming of genera and species. "Philosophia botanica" also contains a "Horologium floræ", that is a compilation of the times during the day and the night when different plants expand and close their flowers. The latter part was meant to be expanded and printed separately. Among the readers who were influenced by "Philosophia botanica" were Rousseau and Goethe. To all appearances the binding of this copy has been made in Lund in the south of Sweden. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
