Johann Christian Klengel (1751-1824). Landschaft mit Brücke. Rötel

      - Johann Christian Klengel (1751 Kesseldorf-Dresden 1824). Landschaft mit Brücke. Rötel auf Papier mit Wasserzeichen: ("GIR"). -- Beschreibung: -- Rötel auf Papier mit Wasserzeichen: ("GIR"). oben links in Bleistift bezeichnet: "Klengel f.". -- Größe/Size: -- 20,5 x 30,4 cm. -- Zustand: -- Sehr guter, altersgerechter Zustand mit leichten Altersspuren. Leicht restauriert.

An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals.

London, A. Millar, 1751. 12mo. Contemporary half calf with 5 raised bands and gilt tittle-label to spine. Hinges, capitals and corners worn, but unrestored and still tight. Very light scattered browning and one leaf with a tear (no loss), otherwise internally very nice and clean. Old owner's inscriptions (Francis Humphreys, Max Ede) to front free end-paper and contemporary owner's name to top of title-page ("Geo: Hickes"). (8), 253, (3, -advertisements) pp. Fully complete, with the half-title, errata (several of these corrected in a neat, early hand), and advertisements.. First edition, first issue (L3 in the uncancelled state) of Hume's ethical materpiece, according to Hume himself "of all my writings, historical, philosophical or literary, incomparably the best" (Hume, "My Own Life, 1776).The present work is a cornerstone of moral philosophy, laying bare to us the foundation of ethics. It hugely influenced all later writings on ethics and constitutes a milestone in the history of moral thought. Hume's fist discussions about ethics appear in Book 3 of his "A Treatise of Human Nature". There, however, his moral philosophy is not fully developed, and only in his ethical magnum opus (the present work), does his moral philosophy come in to full being. "Late in his life Hume deemed the "Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals" his best work, and in style it is a model of elegance and subtlety. His method in that work differs from that of the "Treatise": instead of explicating the nature of virtue and vice and our knowledge of them in terms of underlying features of the human mind, he proposes to collect all the traits we know from common sense to be virtues and vices, observe what those in each group have in common, and from that observation discover the "foundation of ethics" (SEP). "Shortly before his death, David Hume declared his Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals (1751) to be the best of his many writings. In this highly influential work, Hume sets out his theory of justice and benevolence, and the other virtues, and argues that morality is founded on the natural feelings or `sentiments' of humankind." (From the Oxford Philosophical texts edition of the present work, edt. Beauchamp, 1998)

Four vols. in one, 8vo, (4) + 87 and (4) + 164 and (4) + 144 and (4) + 185 + (1)pp, 8 folding tables, complete with the half-title and title to each part, each part with its own pagination and register, contemporary calf gilt, rebacked. A very good copy. First edition. Higgs 98. Kress 5117. Goldsmiths 8631. A comprehensive and detailed history of British taxes from 1688 to 1751. 'I hope', writes Gordon, that 'this book will establish a maxim observed by all wise nations, but exploded by all wicked ministers, that the annual expence ought never to exceed the annual revenue; and that consequently, when an increase of the former becomes necessary for securing or vindicating the honour or rights of a nation, the latter ought to be increased in proportion, if necessary, even to the utmost the people can spare from their daily subsistence. It will likewise, I hope, establish another maxim, which is this, that when the rich men of any country (who in all free countries must have the government in their hands) endeavour to spare themselves by taxing the poor, they will always at last find themselves disappointed, and in the mean time will ruin the trade and credit of their country'.

Spine with compartments stamped in blind, gilt-stamped title, and gilt-stamped decorations at head and foot; place and date of publication in gilt at base of spine.

Early full calf later skilfully rebacked by Riviere in period style (raised bands, with extensively gilt-decorated compartments, retaining the original title-label); leather on the front and rear panels slightly crazed, but with the original gilt rules and inner dentelles; all edges red; occasional foxing and offsetting; an excellent copy with a modern commercial bookplate on the verso of the flyleaf. The article on Conyers Middleton (1683-1750) by Leslie Stephen in the 'Dictionary of National Biography' is painstakingly (and almost painfully) informative. The English clergyman was no stranger to controversy; 'Serious imputations . have been made upon his literary honesty [he was accused of plagiarism] . Middleton was probably one of the few divines who can be fairly accused of conscious insincerity'. This book 'denied the credibility of the stories of miracles in periods subsequent to the first age of the church, attacked the character of the narrators, and explained the origin of the narratives by the general credulity of the times in which they arose. The book produced a lively controversy. Hume found that it had eclipsed the volume of essays (published in April 1748), which included his own argument against the credibility of miracles. Gibbon's temporary conversion to catholicism soon afterwards was chiefly due to a perusal of Middleton' (and there's a lot more where this came from!). From the sacred to the profane (relatively speaking), the note printed on the verso of the initial half-title has great period flavour: 'Dec. 12. 1748. Dr Middleton's "Free Inquiry &c." having been printed in such hast [sic], and at such a season of the year, that the sheets have not had sufficient time to dry, it is thought proper to give this notice to Gentlemen, not to have their books bound in less than two months or they will run the hazard of having them spoiled'.
