"- SECONDO STATO DI SETTE - Acquaforte e bulino, 1751, firmata in lastra. "- SECOND STATE, OF SEVEN - The very rare second state of seven, before the address of the publisher Bouchrd & Graviere. Etching and engraving, 1751, signed on plate. Example from the contemporary Roman Edition. A very good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""encircled fleur de lys"", with margins, good condition. Taken from Vedute di Roma; the whole work consists of 135 plates which have been individually produced by Piranesi along 30 years, from 1745 circa until his death. Two more works have been subsequently added, two plates by his son Francesco. They have been printed for the first time in 1751 (34 plates) by the editor Giovanni Bouchard, afterwards by Piranesi himself, publisher in Palazzo Tomati in Rome (as it is written on m,any plates), until the final edition of 137 plates. After Piranesi's death, his son Francesco inherited the plates, editing them first in Rome and then in Paris. The Calcografia Camerale, nowadays Calcografia Nazionale, has then bought the plates which are now kept inside the building. Print from Piranesi's famous series ""Vedute di Roma"", 1748-78. These early impressions, printed in Piranesi's lifetime, on heavy Italian paper and before the plates became worn, are particularly prized for their rich, black, deeply-etched line. This view of Piazza Navona shows the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone to the left and, as the centrepiece to this great baroque space, Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers."         Cours de physique expérimentale

1751 - 2 forts vol. in-4, Paris, J. Rollin & C.A. Jombert, 1751, in-4, 2 forts vol. in-4, [2]-XII-[2]-503-[1 bl.]-4 pp, 32 pl. Manque à la coiffe supérieure du tome I. Wheeler Gift I, 364 ; De Backer VI, 8. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The History of Pompey the Little.

London: M. Cooper, , 1751. or, The Life and Adventures of a Lap-Dog. Octavo (95 x 160 mm). Contemporary brown calf, raised bands, gilt frame to covers, title blindstamped to second spine compartment. Engraved frontispiece by Louis Botard. Ownership signature to front pastedown. Small chip to headcap, small repair to rear joint, a little stripping to covers, contents clean. A very good copy. First edition. The first edition is very scarce in commerce, particularly in a contemporary binding. Coventry studied at Magdalene College, Cambridge from 1746 onwards, where he met the poet Thomas Gray who presented him with a non-surviving comedy that would provide the basis for Pompey the Little. This satirical novel caricatures the English society of his epoch from the perspective of a lap-dog. The History of Pompey the Little was the first book in the "mock-heroic epic" genre to transcend its stylistic devices and take the form of a novel.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The History of Pompey the Little. or, The Life and Adventures of a Lap-Dog.

London: M. Cooper, 1751 - Octavo (95 x 160 mm). Contemporary brown calf, raised bands, gilt frame to covers, title blindstamped to second spine compartment. Ownership signature to front pastedown. Small chip to headcap, small repair to rear joint, a little stripping to covers, contents clean. A very good copy. Engraved frontispiece by Louis Botard. [Attributes: First Edition]

      A. Millar, London 1751 - First edition. xv, [i], 127, [1] pp. 8vo. First edition of Fielding's most important social tract, written as chief magistrate, "the most remarkable of his social tracts - a work as important for what it reveals about his temperament and character as for the remedies it prescribes for the disorders of the commonwealth" (Battestin, pp. 513-4).Fielding advocates reforms to the penal code that would curb the social ills - drunkenness, gambling, prostitution, theft - that plagued mid-18th century England. The social order can only be maintained by instilling fear in the general population, and punishment should be harsh and swift. Executions, instead of being public spectacles, should arouse fear and terror and should be solemnly conducted in secret. This copy bound by The Club Bindery, founded in 1895 by members of the Grolier Club to provide exceptionally fine binding for American collectors. Robert Hoe, who helped finance the bindery, would have commissioned this binding himself. Cross III, p. 320.         An Enquiry Concerning The Principles of Morals.

London: A. Milar, 1751. First edition, first state of L3, with catchword "than" on recto of what Hume himself considered his masterpiece. 12 mo, bound in contemporary full calf. With half-title, errata leaf, and 3 pages of ads at end. In very good condition with light toning and wear, inscription of the Caslon Society on front free endpaper. The Caslon Society was founded by William Caslon the Elder, who was an English typefounder. The distinction and legibility of his type secured him the patronage of the leading printers of the day in England and on the continent. His typefaces transformed English type design and first established an English national typographic style. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Hume's Treatise of Human Nature (1739-40) was the first attempt to apply principles of Locke's empirical psychology to a theory of knowledge. In this and his Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals, Hume stands as a leading voice in the school of Utilitarianism, "the most influential and longest continuing tradition in English speaking moral philosophy... marked by a long line of brilliant writers" that includes Adam Smith, Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. Hume's Enquiry importantly explores "how we make moral judgments... the 'mechanism' of moral judgments. How are they made and what accounts for their content? Hume aims to be the 'Newton of the Passions.' In contrast to Locke, he does not present a normative system of principles founded on the Laws of Nature... [but] the role it plays in social life and in establishing social unity and mutual understanding... What Hume is trying to do is explain the fact that we agree... On Hume's view there is only one possible basis, and that is one that appeals to our principle of humanity... the psychological tendency we have to identify with the interests and concerns of others when our own interests do not come into competition with them" (Rawls 162, 177-87). An Enquiry was, in Hume's own opinion, "Of all my writings incomparably the best" (Autobiography). The influence of Utilitarianism as furthered by Hume was immense: "He may be regarded as the acutest thinker in Great Britain of the 18th century" (DNB).
