The History of Pompey the Little. or, The Life and Adventures of a Lap-Dog.

London: M. Cooper, 1751 - Octavo (95 x 160 mm). Contemporary brown calf, raised bands, gilt frame to covers, title blindstamped to second spine compartment. Ownership signature to front pastedown. Small chip to headcap, small repair to rear joint, a little stripping to covers, contents clean. A very good copy. Engraved frontispiece by Louis Botard. First edition. The first edition is very scarce in commerce, particularly in a contemporary binding. Coventry studied at Magdalene College, Cambridge from 1746 onwards, where he met the poet Thomas Gray who presented him with a non-surviving comedy that would provide the basis for Pompey the Little. This satirical novel caricatures the English society of his epoch from the perspective of a lap-dog. The History of Pompey the Little was the first book in the "mock-heroic epic" genre to transcend its stylistic devices and take the form of a novel. [Attributes: First Edition]

An Enquiry Concerning The Principles of Morals.

London: A. Milar, 1751. First edition, first state of L3, with catchword "than" on recto of what Hume himself considered his masterpiece. 12 mo, bound in contemporary full calf. With half-title, errata leaf, and 3 pages of ads at end. In very good condition with light toning and wear, inscription of the Caslon Society on front free endpaper. The Caslon Society was founded by William Caslon the Elder, who was an English typefounder. The distinction and legibility of his type secured him the patronage of the leading printers of the day in England and on the continent. His typefaces transformed English type design and first established an English national typographic style. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Hume's Treatise of Human Nature (1739-40) was the first attempt to apply principles of Locke's empirical psychology to a theory of knowledge. In this and his Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals, Hume stands as a leading voice in the school of Utilitarianism, "the most influential and longest continuing tradition in English speaking moral philosophy... marked by a long line of brilliant writers" that includes Adam Smith, Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. Hume's Enquiry importantly explores "how we make moral judgments... the 'mechanism' of moral judgments. How are they made and what accounts for their content? Hume aims to be the 'Newton of the Passions.' In contrast to Locke, he does not present a normative system of principles founded on the Laws of Nature... [but] the role it plays in social life and in establishing social unity and mutual understanding... What Hume is trying to do is explain the fact that we agree... On Hume's view there is only one possible basis, and that is one that appeals to our principle of humanity... the psychological tendency we have to identify with the interests and concerns of others when our own interests do not come into competition with them" (Rawls 162, 177-87). An Enquiry was, in Hume's own opinion, "Of all my writings incomparably the best" (Autobiography). The influence of Utilitarianism as furthered by Hume was immense: "He may be regarded as the acutest thinker in Great Britain of the 18th century" (DNB).

A fine copy. ----Wheeler Gift 369; Brunet VI, 8173; Honeyman 1560. - THIRD EDITION, ENLARGED. This interesting work shows the specimens of one of the most famous curiosity cabinets of the seventeenth century. The first edition was printed in Lyon in 1719 followed by an enlarged edition in 1733, reissued in 1751. This edition includes 93 noteworthy engraved plates, largely by Daudet, and one by Duflos. It includes the additional plates 31a, 52a, 56a, 72a, 84a-d; the plates 39, 48, and 76 are skipped as in the first edition, and the remaining plates are numbered 1 to 88. The grand nephew of Jean Grolier, the greatest bibliophile of the French Renaissance, the Lyonnais Nicolas Grollier de Servieres (1596-1689) was one of the most remarkable curious of the Grand Siecle. Not satisfied with collecting, he himself, like Besson and Ramelli, carried out very learned models and mechanical machines, as well as ivory tower pieces of infinite complexity, clocks and other hydraulic devices. The reputation of his cabinet extended beyond the frontiers of the kingdom, and the fact of having himself invented and executed the pieces adorned by his collection gave a particular attraction to the whole. The tower pieces were placed in cupboards, the doors of which were opened at the same time by a small ivory ankle placed on a table far removed from them; this singular staging contributed to the charm of the collection. During a stay at Lyons, King Louis XIV visited the cabinet two days in succession. Finally, one of the sons of Grollier de Servieres, the great prior of the Savigny Abbey, enriched his father's cabinet with pieces of his invention. The first part contains lathe work, the second art and hourglass, the third model of machines. The work includes descriptions and illustrations of mechanical toys, clocks, hydtaulic devices, lifting apparatus, pontoon bridges, paddle boats, siege equipment, lamps, or a reading-desk. - Visit our website for additional images and information. Cfr. Kvk; Sapori, 77. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

An Enquiry into the Causes of the Late Increase of Robbers, &c. With Some Proposals for Remedying This Growth in Evil. The Present Reigning Vices are Impartially Exposed; and the Laws That Relate to the Provision for the Poor. and to the Punishment of Felons are Largely and Freely Examined

London: A. Millar, 1751. First edition. xv, [i], 127, [1] pp. 8vo. Full red morocco, covers tooled in gilt to panel design with three double-fillets and floral roll, spines gilt in six compartments with raised bands, by The Club Bindery (signed in gilt on front turn-in, "THE CLUB BINDERY 1906"). Front joint rubbed, else fine, with fore- and lower edge uncut. First edition. xv, [i], 127, [1] pp. 8vo. First edition of Fielding's most important social tract, written as chief magistrate, "the most remarkable of his social tracts - a work as important for what it reveals about his temperament and character as for the remedies it prescribes for the disorders of the commonwealth" (Battestin, pp. 513-4). Fielding advocates reforms to the penal code that would curb the social ills - drunkenness, gambling, prostitution, theft - that plagued mid-18th century England. The social order can only be maintained by instilling fear in the general population, and punishment should be harsh and swift. Executions, instead of being public spectacles, should arouse fear and terror and should be solemnly conducted in secret. This copy bound by The Club Bindery, founded in 1895 by members of the Grolier Club to provide exceptionally fine binding for American collectors. Robert Hoe, who helped finance the bindery, would have commissioned this binding himself. Cross III, p. 320. Provenance: Robert Hoe (red morocco booklabel); Donald & Mary Hyde (bookplate); Ximenes (pencil price, Occasional List no. 92, item 84)

Cambridge's major work, a mock-epic poem, whose hero is Martinus Scriblerus, the brilliant creation of the Tory wits Alexander Pope, John Arbuthnot, and Jonathan Swift, founding members of the Scriblerus Club, an association of London authors. Working collaboratively, the group imagined the persona of Scriblerus, through whose writings they accomplished their satirical aims. Cambridge's poem, "intended to expose false taste and false science, replete with happy parodies of distinguished passages in the classics, particularly Virgil," is preceded by a dissertation on the mock epic, in which he avows Cervantes as his master. (Lowndes) "The versification is still elegant and finished, but the interest of the satire has evaporated." (DNB) N. B.
