An senibus chocolate potus ? (« les gens âgés doivent-ils boire du chocolat ? » )
Paris, 1749. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

MAIRAN, Jean-Jacques Dortous de
Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1749. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 12mo (165 x 97 mm). xxix [11], 384, xx pp. Engraved frontispiece by Ingram, woodcut device on title, 5 folding engraved plates at the end. Contemporary French mottled calf, spine with 5 raised bands gilt in compartments and with red morocco lettering-piece, red-dyed edges (slight wear to extremities). Light browning and very minor occasional spotting, faint dampstain to upper gutter, but generally a crisp and clean copy in untouched contemporary binding. Fine copy. ---- Hoover 554; Duveen, p.386; Honeyman, 2113; Ward & Carozzi 1467. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION. This treatise on the properties of ice was first published in 1716. Ours is the third and much enlarged edition and the best according to Michaud. It contains a long preface which was read at the meeting of the Royal Academy of Sciences on Nov. 13, 1748. Dortous de Mairan was the first to proof that salt accelerated the melting of ice. C'est "la meilleure" selon Michaud. Elle est augmentée de plus du double. La préface, en édition originale, reprend le discours de l'auteur à l'académie des Sciences en 1748. Le premier, Dortous de Mairan a prouvé que le sel accélérait la fonte de la glace. - Visit our website for additional images and information. Very Good.

Overall very nice conditon for both volumes given their age. "Heylyn's Lectures" 1749 & "Heylyn on the Testaments" 1761. 2 volumes. VERY RARE FIRST EDITIONS & a rare opportunity to aquire both of Heylyn's works Both volumes are in good condition & leather bound. The leather on Volume 2 is somewhat darker than that of Volume 1 (see photos). This is a collection of the works of John Heylyn D.D (1685 1759) Prebendary of Westminster and Rector of St Mary-Le-Strand (London England) Works Theological lectures at Westminster-Abbey. With an interpretation of the New Testament. Part 1. Containing, the four Gospels (1749) An interpretation of the New Testament. Part 2. Containing the Acts of the Apostles and the several Epistles. (1761). Wikipedia: "Heylyn was an influence on John Wesley as early as the Oxford Methodist days. According to Wesley's diaries, on 10 May 1738 (Whitsunday) Wesley heard Heylyn "preach a truly Christian sermon on 'They were all filled with the Holy Ghost'--and so, said he, may all of you be." In 1739 Wesley heard Heylyn give a sermon on feigned and hypocritical repentance, and as a result, declared that he (Wesley) had been a hypocrite for twenty years. Heylyn's "Theological Lectures" was used as a source in Wesley's compilation of the Explanatory Notes on the New Testament.[2] He served as vicar of Sunbury on Thames, Middlesex 1742-7,[3] a prebendary of St Pauls Cathedral. In 1743 Heylyn was installed prebendary of Westminster Abbey.[2] Heylyn died at Hampstead at the age of 74 and was buried in Westminster Abbey in August 1759.[2]".

Ludwig, Christian Gottlieb.
Leipzig Gleditsch, 1749. (44,5 x 30 cm). Jahrhundert hinein in chemiatrischen Rezepten auftauchen. - Exlibris. Quarto, bound in full morocco, elaborate gilt tooling to the spine, front and rear panels, raised bands, marbled endpapers, frontispiece of Halley. In near fine condition. The posthumous publication of the famous English astronomer's lunar and planetary tables, first printed in the Philosophical Transactions XXXVII, no. 193 (1719). Henry Fielding
Published by A. Miller, London; 1749. 6 vols. First edition/First Printing. This is a beautiful set of first edition, first printings of Fielding’s literary masterpiece, Tom Jones. The books come with all first printing points, including the errata leaf in volume I after the contents and the blank leaves at the back of the volume. Additionally, it has the cancels as usual, B9-10 (vol. I); B4-5 & N12 (vol II); H8-10, M3 & Q11 (vol III); B1 (vol. IV); N8 (vol. V). These books are highly collectible, each volume is bound in contemporary brown leather and housed in a smart modern slipcase. some of the errors have been corrected in pencil in early hand. The spines are weakening and starting to crack with a couple of blank pages coming loose. There are ownership bookplates on the pages opposite the title pages. Otherwise, apart from some toning and age spotting as to be expected in books of this age, this is a beautiful set of volumes of this first edition. This literary masterpiece was originally printed in a 2000 book print run, but it was so popular that by the end of the year 10000 copies over 4 editions had been printed. Indeed, this novel has never been out of print since it’s first publication, it is one of the most influential novels and best-sellers of all time. This set would be the centre-piece of any literary collection, a real must-have! Please get in touch for more photos, we have plenty more. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Chez Barrillot & fils. 1749 Spirit of the Laws Montesquieu Political Government USA Democracy LAW 2v Useless laws weaken the necessary laws. Montesquieu, The Spirit of the Laws Charles-Louis de Montesquieu s Spirit of the Laws is one of the most famous treaties ever written, especially on political theory. This work was so influential that world leaders such as Catherine the Great and the United States founding fathers applied the methods taught in this book to their culture s future. This famed work found itself on the infamous Prohibited Book Index in 1751 even though it was well-respected and well-read around the world. Montesquieu lists a few major points in his work; points that have resonated with government for centuries. These include: Separation of power Liberty and democracy are one in the same The point of civil and criminal law is to ensure personal security Qualities and flaws of governmental types This rare two-volume French edition was published in 1749 by Durand in Paris the imprint Barrillot in Geneva on the title page is false. This edition; however, does include an impressive folding map of the world which is scarcely found! This pirated edition features a number of errors not found in the official first edition; however, it did inspire Montesquieu to publish another famous edition called the Huart edition. FORREST, Theodosius)
no place. c but probably later, 1749. Broadside, folio, (overall 10 1/2" x 15") engraving after William Hogarth at top (9 1/2" x 7") , letter press cantata in triple column separated by woodcut ornament, fine copy, laid down on backing sheet. Theodosius Forrest (1728-1784), author, lawyer and song writer has taken William Hogarth's painting "O' The Roast Beef of Old England &c." and with his exceptional talent as a song writer has written this Cantata based on that famous painting. Forrest was a member of the Beef Steak Club. First line: "Twas at the Gate of Calais, Hogarth Tells". This exceptionally rare item is listed in Foxon F198 where it refers to Hogarth's original print which was issued in 1749, but suggesting that this Cantata was written and published at a later date. Foxon records only a copy at the British Museum where it is listed in Catalogue of Personal and Political Satires No 3053. There it records a copy with two columns of letter press beneath the engraving, but Foxon records only the triple column version which tallies with this copy. ESTC on line records only one known version (Huntington Library), dated as c1760?, but of a different size to this one, which would suggest that this an earlier version, if not the first.

MIDDLETON (Conyers)
London: Printed R. Manby and H. S. Cox, 1749. FIRST EDITION. Small 4to, 219 x 166 mms., pp. [iv], cxli [cxlii blank], 232 [233 - 252 Index], with notice to purchasers pasted on verso of half-title, contemporary quarter calf, black leather label, marbled boards (very worn); upper and lower front joint slightly cracked but a very good copy. David Hume had published an essay on miracles in his Philosophical Essay concerning Human Understanding in 1748, which, as he recorded in his autobiography by Middleton's work: "I had the Mortification to find all England in a Ferment on account of Dr. Middletons Free Enquiry; while my Performance was entirely overlooked and neglected." Middleton was at the centre of a number of controversies during his lifetime and to some extent afterwards. He was married three times, but he had no children by any of them. His third marriage was to the beautiful widow Ann Wilkins. She was a skilled musician and with her husband and his niece gave performances in their home, Horace Walpole neatly summed up gossip about her playing shuttlecock with former male acquaintances: "some young gentlemen of her former acquaintance, two in particular while the good Doctor was writing against the Fathers and miracles in his study overhead, little suspecting that without any miracle he was in great danger of being made a father, without his participation" (cited in ODNB). London: Iohn Brindley, 1749. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Let us read, and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world." ― Voltaire 'Zadig, or The Book of Fate' is a rare 18th-century philosophical novel by Voltaire. Originally written in French, this work tells the story of an ancient Babylonian philosopher who seeks to discover destiny through religious and metaphysical studies. This work was known to have influenced Edgar Allan Poe in his 'Murders in the Rue Morgue'. This 1749 printing was the first English edition and features a beautiful gold-leaf fore edge.
