BUFFON (Georges-Louis Leclerc, comte de)
[Paris].

[Click Below for Full Description]

In 1558 czar Ivan the Terrible of Russia invaded Livonia, starting the Livonian War. The Livonian Order was decisively defeated in 1560, prompting Livonian factions to seek foreign protection. The majority of Livonia accepted Polish-Lithuanian rule, while Reval and the nobles of Northern Estonia swore loyalty to the Swedish king, and the Bishop of Ösel-Wiek sold his lands to the Danish king.As result of the war, Northern Estonia became Swedish Duchy of Estonia, Southern Estonia became Polish-Lithuanian Duchy of Livonia, and Saaremaa remained under Danish control. In 1700 the Great Northern War started, and by 1710 the whole of Estonia was conquered by the Russian Empire.; - vita of the artist: Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723 -1786) also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, were leading cartographers in France during the 18th century. In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. BELLIN, Jacques Nicolas.
Paris: 1749. Sheet size: 253 x 365 mm Plate size: 238 x322 mm Very good condition. Copper engraving. Hand coloured. Bellin was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French navy upon the creation of France's hydrographic office, the Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine. As befits a maritime chart, all place names and general information is coastal, and there is no real attempt to engrave anything of note inland of the coastal areas. Over a 50-year career, he produced a large number of maps and charts. The accuracy of Bellin's charts ensured that they were in use for many years.

Gluc de Saint-Port, a member of a family whose thread-dyeing enterprise was closely allied to the royal Gobelins factory, was for some years the lover of the great woman book collector Jeanne Baptiste d'Albert de Luynes, Comtesse de Verruë (1670-1736). She presented Gluc with a number of art objects and he was a considerable art collector on his own account. This library is notable for its holdings of books about art and literature and for incorporating the library of Bernard de La Monnoye (1641-1728), the French lawyer, poet, philologist, and critic, best known for his carols Noel borguignon, written in the patois of Burgundy. He formed an important library of literature and many of the books were filled with his erudite annotations. Upon going bankrupt, he was obliged to sell his library to Gluc.
P.M.M., n. 197: "In 1743 he began De l'ésprit des Loix. It took four years to write, and when it was finished almost all his friends advised him not to publish it. Montesquieu paid no attention and it was printed in Geneva in the autumn of 1748". INTERNET/07656

Sauerbrey, attivo a Berlino. "Map published in" Nouvel Atlas de Marine. The general thesis of Montesquieu (1689-1755) is that laws are not only a creation of men. The spirit of laws is "the various relations of laws with various things" the forms are multiple; there are therefore physical causes (the climate), moral causes (religion, morals ...); moreover a primitive justice is at the origin of the laws; There is, then, a spirit of laws. But the book is not only a treatise of the spirit which animates the laws, it is above all a treatise of governments, and above all, of liberty. Although the book was widely read, it was received with a certain coldness (by the philosophers, who did not recognize in Montesquieu one of their own and reproached him for his conservatism) and much criticism (on the part of the ecclesiastics … [Click Below for Full Description]
