Warder, Joseph
- London: T. Longman and T. Astley, 1749. Eighth edition (pp. 163, adverts). Duodecimo (17.5 cm), full leather with gilt decorations and titles; frontispiece portrait of Warder. With the bookplate of Sir Edward Littleton, Bart., likely the fourth baronet (1727?- 1812), an important Staffordshire landowner. “Warder [1654/5 - 1724] made a study of the habits of bees and their external anatomy using a light microscope, and embodied the results of many years of observation in his only book, The True Amazons, or, The Monarchy of Bees [It was the standard work on bees for many years until it was superseded by Thorley’s Female Monarchy (Carlyle)] . In it he described the use of a hand lens to confirm by simple dissection the sex of the then mysterious drones as male bees. He explained why the drones were, contrary to popular opinion, important to the summer economy of the colony. In discussing the practical management of colonies he also advocated the provision of a nearby source of drinking water. Working at a time when straw skeps were the normal accommodation for honeybee colonies Warder explained the advantages of octagonal wooden hives with glass windows. These he had made up on a template to give standard units that could be built up and subdivided as required. He thus laid the foundations of modern apicultural practice. The True Amazons went through nine editions, all published in London, and after the first edition Warder obtained permission for a dedication to Queen Anne. The editions vary, with additional material not always carried into later versions, the las … [Click Below for Full Description]

HUTCHESON Francis.
(Durand), A Amsterdam (ma Paris). Testo francese. Opera completa in due volumi. Cm.15,9x10,2. Pg.192; 388. Tagli spruzzati. [Click Below for Full Description]

BOWEN, Emanuel (1693/4–1767) [OGILBY, John, 1600-1676]
London: Printed & sold by Tho: Bowles Print & Map Seller in St. Pauls Church-Yard. London: Thomas Bowles, 1749. (8 x 6 inches). 4 leaves of tables. Engraved title-page and 273 engraved road maps after Emanuel Bowen. Recent calf gilt (a bit rubbed). Fourth edition, first published in 1720 in its current format, but a reduced version of Ogilby's "Britannia" first published in London in 1675. "Ogilby secured the. title of His Majesty's Cosmographer early in 1671 [and] drew upon the support of the King and other patrons in the production and publication of Britannia, the work for which he became best known. Chiefly a road atlas, it was securely based on contemporary and collaborative research. Ogilby drew out 2519 miles of road in the form of 100 strip maps, a technique that was widely imitated throughout the following century. Measuring distances by waywiser (his "great wheel"), he made allowance for roads that ascended hills yet had to be depicted in two dimensions on paper, and his surveys helped to standardize the mile at 1760 yards throughout the kingdom. Britannia marked the first major advance in cartography in England since the Tudor period, though it did echo earlier traditions. It was republished in 1698, 1719, and 1720, and on subsequent occasions up to modern times" (DNB). This is one of Emanuel Bowen's earlier works, and his contribution to eighteenth-century world and British atlases would be substantial.   Condition Report Externally Spine – very good condition. BUFFON (Georges-Louis Leclerc, comte de)
[Paris]. Sturdy, Science and Social Status.
