Terrae Musei Regii Dresdensis...accedunt Terrarum Sigillatarum figurae

Engraved vignette on title, six engraved headpiece, & 12 engraved plates. xvi, 298, [8] pp. Folio, cont. fine vellum over boards (tiny wormhole in gutter, becoming slight larger in final four leaves). Leipzig: J.F. Gleditsch, 1749. First edition of a very interesting book. Ludwig (1709-73), took his medical degree at Leipzig. He joined the faculty there and successively became professor of anatomy, surgery, pathology, and therapy. Ludwig is equally famous for his natural history activities. He botanized in Africa as a young man on behalf of the King of Poland and wrote an important series of botanical works. Both Rousseau and Linnaeus held him in high regard. This work describes the collection of "earths" (really mineral specimens) and seals preserved in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Dresden. The first three chapters (pp. 1-192) contain the classified catalogue of the great mineral collection. The remaining part of the book contains the description of the seals manufactured from the medicinal earth coming from Lemnos, an island in the north of the Aegean Sea. These seals were popular throughout western Europe. The earth was considered a cure for wounds and for the bites of poisonous snakes. The earth was sold by apothecaries in stamped cubical blocks and shaped into seals. The seals are depicted on the plates. Fine copy. Attractive modern booklabel of "Bachem." ❧ Hirsch, III, p. 859. Murray, Museums. Their History and their Use, Vol. I, p. 35n & Vol. II, p. 215. N.B.G., Vol. 32, cols. 209-10. Schelenz, p. 455. .

Fleischmann, 1749-1773. Volumes 1-8 (of 9), bound in 4. Folio (380 x 245mm). With 2 engraved frontispieces, 8 engraved title-vignettes, 1 large coloured folding map of Carolina, 1 engraved portrait and 421 beautifully handcoloured engraved plates. Contemporary calf, spines with gilt lettered labels and gilt ornaments. One of the most splendid German works on birds. The number of copies printed must have been very small as complete copies with all the 9 volumes are rare. The last complete copy to appear at auction is almost 20 years ago./In 1749-1776, the works of Edwards 'A natural history of uncommon birds' and 'Gleanings of natural history' and Catesby 'Natural history of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands' were translated into German and combined into one work under the title 'Sammlung verschiedener ausländischer und seltener Vögel'. The plates of Edwards and Catesby were re-engraved by Seligmann, further embellished by the addition of figures of plants not present in the originals. Johann Michael Seligmann (1720-1762) was a Nürnberg publisher and engraver. He published some of the most splendid natural history works of his time such as Trew's 'Hortus Nitidissimis', Gessner's 'Opera botanica' and Schmidel's 'Erz Stüffen'./The final volume 9, not present here, contains 52 plates./3 plates with contemporary handwriting in the margin, 2 plates with old handwriting (just one word), 1 plate, outer margin shorter (not supplied from another copy).

4to (248 x 185mm). With 1 engraved portrait of Buffon, 4 folded tables, 12 engraved maps and 1261 engraved plates. Contemporary uniform calf, richly gilt decorated spines with red and green gilt lettered labels, sides with gilt borders. A fine uniformly bound set of the rare first edition including the posthumously published volumes written by Lacépède on fishes, amphibians, snakes and whales. A well preserved set, of this great classic on natural history, dealing almost exclusively with zoology. Buffon's work enjoyed such a popularity that numerous editions and continuations were published throughout the 18th and 19th century. These, however, should not be confused with the above sumptuously printed 'Imprimerie Royale' edition. All plates are engraved after drawings by De Sève, the famous French landscape painter. The animals are depicted in their natural habitat, together with charming landscapes, villages, mountains etc. These elaborately drawn plates, full of elegance, became very popular and were frequently imitated. The work is composed as follows: Histoire Naturelle ... 15 volumes; Suppléments 7 volumes; Minéraux 5 volumes; Oiseaux 9 volumes; Quadrupèdes ovipares et des serpens 2 volumes; Poissons 5 volumes; Cétacées 1 volume./"... he opens his great work with an essay called 'Théorie de la Terre', in which for the first time he outlines a satisfactory account of the history of our globe and its development as a fitting home for living things... This rejection of a rigid system of classification, to which most biologists of his time adhered, and Buffon's belief in the mutability of species, implied clearly some preparation for the thoughts of Darwin... Nevertheless he was the first to present the universe as one complete whole and to find no phenomenon calling for any but a purely scientific explanation" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 198). //PMM 198; Sparrow, Milestones of Science 32; Nissen ZBI, 672; Dibner, Heralds 193.

In Roma, Antonio de' Rossi, 1749. - in-4. 95pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Essai de philosophie morale.

S.n. 1749 - - S.n., A Berlin 1749, In 12 (9,5x16,5cm), (4) 107pp., relié. - Edition originale, rare. (4) 107pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Palestine] A journey from Aleppo to Jerusalem; at Easter, A.D. 1697. The seventh edition; to which is now added an account of the author’s journey to the banks of Euphrates at Beer, and to the country of Mesopotamia. With an index to the whole work. By Hen. Maundrell, M. A. late Fellow of Exeter Coll. and Chaplain to the Factory at Aleppo

printed at the Theatre, for W. Meadows Bookseller in Cornhill, London MDCCXLIX [1749], Oxford - 8vo: [12],171,[1]pp, with engraved title vignette and 15 further copper-engraved plates (most folding, four of which signed by Hawksmoor). Modern half-calf over marbled boards, spine decorated in blind with five raised bands, red leather lettering piece gilt. A Fine copy, spine a tad faded, text very lightly toned but clean and bright, plates in vivid impressions. Gibson's Library, p. 194 (for an earlier edition). Seventh Edition. At 3 pm, on Friday, 26 February 1697, Maundrell and fourteen others set off on an Easter pilgrimage from Aleppo, in Turkey (where Maundrell was chaplain to the Levant Company's factory) to Jerusalem, traveling across northern Syria to Latakia, down the coast to Acre, then to Jerusalem. According to the ODNB, "The Journey was partially intended to bring up to date George Sandys's account of 1610 (Relation of a journey begun an. dom. 1610. Foure bookes. Containing a description of the Turkish empire, of Aegypt, of the Holy Land, of the remote parts of Italy and llands adioyning). In fact, Maundrell's account is quite different from that of Sandys, and is a major work in its own right, giving detailed descriptions of the life and landscapes of Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine, including the agricultural practices of the regions and places encountered, in addition to descriptions of places of religious significance. . . . Curzon, in his Visits to Monasteries in the Levant (1849), says that he ‘was struck with the superiority of old Maundrell's narrative over all the others, for he tells us plainly and clearly what he saw’ (Curzon, 168), and Howell, in a preface to a 1963 reprint of the Journey, says that ‘it is taut, disciplined writing from which every wrinkle of ambiguity has been ironed away’ (Howell, xi). Most of the nineteenth-century writers on the Holy Land, including Henry Robinson, Dean Stanley, Carl Ritter, and George Adam Smith, comment positively on Maundrell's account."         A Voyage Round the World, in the Years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV . By George Anson, Esq; Now Lord Anson, Commander in Chief of a Squadron of His Majesty's Ships, sent upon an Expedition to the South-Seas

London: John and Paul Knapton, for the author, 1749. Two volumes, quarto, text and plates bound separately; with a total of 43 folding engraved plates and maps (including the frontispiece world map described below); some foxing and offsetting, a very good set in full contemporary calf (boards worn at extremities) spines renewed in period style retaining original labels. The lure of Spanish gold. One of the most popular and enduring seafaring books of all time, Anson's {i Voyage }recounts the capture of the Manila galleon laden with Spanish gold plundered from the New World. Richard Walter's compilation account of the Anson voyage, prepared under the careful eye of its commander, was one of the most widely disseminated naval narratives of the eighteenth century. Having taken the Manila galleon, Anson was likened to Sir Francis Drake and was certainly as vivid a figure in the popular imagination: hence the first edition of 1748 was rapidly reprinted in various formats to appease a ready market. This fifth quarto edition of 1749 features the same suite of 42 engraved maps and views included in the first edition published the previous year. Additionally, it contains an impressive frontispiece world map showing the track of the {i Centurion} that is not present in the first edition but is found in subsequent editions. Anson's voyage was 'appallingly costly in men and ships, did not result in new discoveries, and some of the geographical information gathered from the Spanish was often more confusing than helpful' (Dunmore). Nonetheless, by harassing the Spanish in the South Pacific and returning with ample gold, the loss of six ships and over half the crew became insignificant: 'The casualties were forgotten as the public celebrated a rare triumph in a drab and interminable war…, and in 1748 the long-awaited authorised account appeared under the name of Richard Walter, chaplain on the Centurion, and became a best-seller. Walter's volume has formed the basis of all accounts of Anson's voyage from the mid-eighteenth century to the present. The book, more fully illustrated than any similar work up to that time, was both a stirring story of adventure at sea and an exhortation to further Pacific enterprise' (Glyn Williams{i , The Prize of all the Oceans. The triumph and tragedy of Anson's voyage}, 1999, pp. xvii-xviii).

A voyage to Peru; performed by the Conde of St. Malo, in the years 1745, 1746, 1747, 1748, and 1749

      - A rare account of a voyage to Peru, rivalling to that of Frezier. 1753. London. R. Griffiths. In 12vo (167 mm x 101 mm). xv + 173 + 1 ff. Elegant 19th century half calf, boards ruled in blind, spine with raised bands tooled in gilt and lettering piece, a little worn. A fine copy, paper occasionally browned and spotted. First edition in English, a rare work. First published in French a couple of years earlier under the title ¿Nouveau voyage fait au Perou¿, this is the elusive English translation of this account. ¿An account of a voyage aboard a merchant ship out of St. Malo bound for Peru, with descriptions of society, natural history, agricultural productions, trade¿¿ (Hill). It´s description of Peru is comparable to that of Frezier. Sabin´s note says ¿The author¿s ¿observations and descriptions are sensible, pertinent, and entertaining. He seems to have little of the priest and nothing of the bigot about him; yet his sentiments are such as become the good Christian and the gentleman.¿- Monthly Review, IX. 294.¿ Hill, 387.       - A very detailed hand colored copperplate engraving by Benjamin Wilkes from his series "The English Moths and Butterflies", which was printed in London in 1749. Overall this print measures 12 ½" x 10 ½". In these splendid and ambitious engravings on the butterflies and moths native to Britain, Benjamin Wilkes perfected his own style of representing these spectacular insects in their various stages of development, as well as their natural habitats. With this publication, Wilkes departed from convention, taking inspiration from styles popular in other art forms: Rococo and Chinoiserie. This scientific work, therefore, is of great artistic merit, not least because of the beauty of his subjects. His compositions take on a relatively spontaneous and naturalistic quality, as the insects in their various stages of development, from caterpillar to chrysalis and butterfly or moth, appear to meander about the flora. Wilkes was careful to place them with the plants that served as their nourishment, and the beauty of these, which are all in the flower or fruit stage, makes this book a truly great botanical work in its own right. Each illustration is vibrantly colored, probably by Wilkes himself, who personally drew and engraved the plates in order to ensure their high quality. Wilkes first became known as a painter in oils, specializing in portraits and historical subjects. Also an amateur entomologist, Wilkes eventually decided to devote himself to his passion for butterflies, moths and other insects, combining this interest with his artistic talent. Eventually, this decision culminated in this book, one of the most beautiful 18th-century volumes on the subject, and also led to acclaim and financial reward for Wilkes himself. Overall this print is in very good condition with some foxing/staining and a few small creases and tears around the edges.

The number of copies printed must have been very small as complete copies with all the 9 volumes are rare. The last complete copy to appear at auction is almost 20 years ago.In 1749-1776, the works of Edwards 'A natural history of uncommon birds' and 'Gleanings of natural history' and Catesby 'Natural history of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands' were translated into German and combined into one work under the title 'Sammlung verschiedener ausländischer und seltener Vögel'. The plates of Edwards and Catesby were re-engraved by Seligmann, further embellished by the addition of figures of plants not present in the originals. Johann Michael Seligmann (1720-1762) was a Nürnberg publisher and engraver. Robert

Vaugondy, Paris 1749 - The rare first issue of this very fine eighteenth-century map depicting both North and South America, by one of France's greatest cartographers This highly attractive map depicts the American continent at a time when the European powers were jockeying for power and possessions in the the New World: the period immediately before the Seven Years' War. It is one of Gilles Robert's earlier original maps, and concurrently he also issued a world map and maps of the three other continents. Its rarity can be explained by the fact that it was not apparently usually issued in any of the Robert atlases. The political realities of the time are spelt out in the interesting engraved panel on the right hand side which lists the holdings of Britain, France, Portugal, Holland, Denmark and Spain in the Americas. Also included in this panel is a list of the dominant religions in the region. The map includes two insets: one of Martinique and the other of Santo Domingo, two immensely profitable French colonies (they shared Santo Domingo with the Spanish). The elegant title cartouche is by Gobin and features a Native American reclining beside a spilled pot of gold, her arms raised in exultation as she accepts Christianity, as personified by the Blessed Virgin holding a Cross. The scene also includes flora and fauna indigenous to the Americas: an alligator, a parrot, a goat, a small, rather unusual quadruped with a long tail and two tropical trees. This map was re-issued in 1771, 1776 and 1778 with a new cartouche incorporating a new title "Amérique ou Indes Occidentales". Pedley Bel et Utile , 19 (1st state) & see pp.34/35 (double-page plate). Copper-engraved map, with original outline colour. In good condition, with two small repairs to lower blank margin.

London: H. Woodfall for John and Paul Knapton. Very good. 1749. First English edition.. . Incomplete set of plates, unbound. Price is for all, but may be sold separately. Albinus is perhaps best known for his monumental Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani, which was first published in Leiden in 1747, largely at his own expense. The artist and engraver with whom Albinus did nearly all of his work was Jan Wandelaar (1690-1759). In an attempt to increase the scientific accuracy of anatomical illustration, Albinus and Wandelaar devised a new technique of placing nets with square webbing at specified intervals between the artist and the anatomical specimen and copying the images using the grid patterns Tabulae was highly criticized by such scholars as Petrus Camper especially for the whimsical backgrounds added to many of the pieces by Wandelaar, but Albinus staunchly defended Wandelaar.& This atlas was first published in Leiden in 1747. It is the most celebrated of anatomic atlases. Albinus and his artist, Wandelaar attempted to merge the the very serious science of anatomy with fantastical backgrounds of highly romanticized landscapes. The result is these wonderful engravings executed by Jan Wandelaar, which are both instructive and decorative. The title page is embellished by an engraving of an anatomist performing a dissection of a humanlike creature (a satyr?), in a setting of a hilly graveyard. There are ghostly figures and a tomb in the background. The doctor's medical books are lying on the ground, in the foreground. We have many of the individual engravings from this atlas, representing every facet in the human body from the fully fleshed complete figure to the musculature of the hand.       1749 - Livre ancien (1bl), 220 p., (1bl). 6 planches. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
