The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling

for A Millar, London 1749 - FIRST EDITION OF FIELDING'S MASTERPIECE. Besides being an extremely prolific writer, Henry Fielding was a successful magistrate, founder of the Metropolitan Police, and pioneer of the comic novel. Tom Jones, the book that established this idea of the comic novel, received very mixed reviews upon publication: Sameul Taylor Coleridge said of him, "And how charming, how wholesome, Fielding always is! To take him up after Richardson, is like emerging from a sick room heated by stoves, into an open lawn.", while Samuel Johnson wrote "Sir, there is more knowledge of the heart in one letter of Richardson's, than in all Tom Jones." Nonetheless, "Such was the demand that all 2,500 copies in print had already been sold by the date announced for its a official publication, a phenomenon that one observer believed to be 'an unheard-of case.' Tom Jones quickly sold 10,000 copies, making it one of the great best-sellers of its time; it has never since been out of print." (John Allen Stevenson, The Real History of Tom Jones). First edition, with the errata leaf in vol. 1, and cancels B9-10 (I), B4-5 (II), H8-10, M3(III) and N8 (V). Rothschild 850. London: A. Millar, 1749. 12mo, contemporary full calf rebacked. 6 vols. With handsome bookplate of noted collector Arthur Wilmer Lissauer on front pastedown. Light wear to bindings, very minor occasional foxing. A very handsome set.

Bibl.: De Backer-Sommervogel, VI, 1774-7; Olsckhi, 7660; Gamba, 2415; Riccardi, I, 364.

Early Edition of one of the most remarkable works of the eighteenth century, treating the philosophical principles of law and government, and the determining influence of geographical and economic factors on social thought, customs, and legal and political institutions. Montesquieu was unanimously advised by his friends, including Helvétius and Fontenelle, not to publish, but he ignored them. Despite Helvétius’ criticism that the work was too moderate, it was placed on the Index and the Sorbonne planned a regular censure of it. Although largely misunderstood or ignored by his contemporaries, including the ‘philosophes’, Montesquieu’s theories exerted a profound influence; "they underlay the thinking which led up to the American and French Revolutions, and the United States Constitution in particular is a lasting tribute to the principles he advocated." (PMM) This edition is unrecorded in the bibliographies. cfBrunet III 1859-60. cfCioranescu 46153. cfGraesse IV 589. cfPrinting and the Mind of Man 197.

First Edition of West\'s TranslationWEST, Gilbert, [translator]. PINDAR. Odes of Pindar. With several other Pieces in Prose and Verse, Translated from the Greek. To which is prefixed a Dissertation on the Olympick Games. By Gilbert West, Esq. LL. D. London: Printed for R. Dodsley, 1749.First edition of West\'s translation. Quarto (10 1/16 x 8 3/16 inches; 255 x 207 mm). [6], [22], ccvi, [1, errata], [1, contents], 315, [1, blank], [2, ads] pp.Contemporary full speckled calf, rebacked to style. With original red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Spine stamped in gilt. Title printed in red and black. Edges speckled in red. Outer front hinge cracked and loose, but holding. Outer back hinge cracked but firm. Head and tale of the spine chipped. Very good.In addition to Pindar\'s ìA Dissertation on the Olympick Gamesîand the ìOdes of Pindarî this work includes translations of Horace, Euripides, Lucian, and other classical poets. Including The Fourth Odes of the Fourth Book of Horace, Iphigenia in Tauris. A Tragedy. Translated from the Greek of Euripides, The Triumphs of the Gout. Translated from the Greek of Lucian, Translations from the Argonauticks of Apollonius Rhodius, The Hymn of Cleanthes, and Menexenus. A Dialogue of Plate.Though Gilbert West\'s Odes of Pindar is only the third version of these poems to have been translated into English (the first by Sternhold and Hopkinsin 1713), his translation was arguably the most popular version in the eighteenth century. Just several months after West\'s publication, poet Joseph Warton wrote \"An ode, Occasioned by reading Mr. West\'s Translation of Pindar\"; and some scholars have suggested that Thomas Gray\'s Pindaric Odes, written at the beginning of the 1750s, are to some extent in conversation with West\'s translation. In Lives of the English Poets (1779), Dr. Johnson bestowed rare praise on West, and specifically on West\'s Pindar: \"Of his translations I have only compared the first Olympick ode with the original, and found my expectation surpassed, both by its elegance and its exactness. ... A work of this kind must, in a minute examination, discover many imperfections; but West\'s version, so far as I have considered it, appears to be the product of great labour and great abilities.\"HBS 64697.$1,250

Trop, [1787]. Etched and engraved copperplate print (plate size 53 x 64 cm; image 47 x 63 cm) drawn and executed by Johannes Christoffel Schultsz. With the title, dedication, imprint and a vignette with the VOC-A monogram of the Amsterdam chamber of the VOC engraved in the foot margin of the plate. Framed.

Amsterdam City Archives on-line beeldbank 010094008165; www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/collection/RP-P-OB-70.104; not in Landwehr, Splendid ceremonies. Extremely large etched and engraved copperplate print by Johannes Christoffel Schultz (1749-1812), depicting a moonlight procession of probably more than 500 employees of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the yard of the Company's wharf in Amsterdam, before the arsenal of the Amsterdam Admiralty ('s-Lands Zeemagazijn, now the National Maritime Museum), designed by the great Dutch architect Daniël Stalpaert (1615-1676), official Amsterdam city master builder, built in 1655 and 1656. The employees march in groups according to their occupations, and each holds a staff topped with an implement or implements indicating his trade (saw, adz/axe, hammer and chizzel, etc.) or symbols of rank or position. Some play musical instruments or carry torches, flags, or banners honouring the Prince of Orange. One of the two horse-drawn coaches at near the warehouse is also decorated with an Orangist banner. The print was produced to celebrate the victory of the Orangists over the Patriots in the failed democratic revolution of 1787. It is dedicated to William V, Prince of Orange and his wife Frederica Sophia Wilhelmina.Formerly folded up the centre and with a tear along the fold (running 12 cm into the image) repaired, and some minor and mostly marginal tears also repaired, but still in good condition. A magnificent print of a VOC procession.

Nangazaki [Paris]: Klnporzenkru, L'an du monde 59749, 1749. Two volumes in one, duodecimo, first title lightly stained and with an early ms attribution to 'Cahusac'; a very good copy in old dark blue paper boards, red leather label. "Last edition" of this charming and rare book which had been suppressed by the authorities in Paris, and which announces itself as the 'final edition, less correct than previous versions.' De Cahusac (d. 1759) had a sustained career as a moderately successful playwright, and was a member of the Academy of science and literature in Berlin. Supposedly translated from the original Japanese ('la Litterature Japonnoise est d'ailleurs si fort ignorée en Europe…') this is a charming tale of the island of 'Fortunée'. Although the author claims to be translating (via Portuguese) from the original Japanese, he gives himself some elbow-room with announcements about his tendency to make the original more striking and original 'd'amuser ma Nation'. Although clearly a fairy-tale, the world which this work describes is blessed with all of the attributes of the idyllic utopia: perfect weather, ease of living, rational laws. It is dedicated to the exuberant young Grigri, and follows his many adventures. Ray Howgego has recently traced the publishing history of this book. He states that the work was written in 1744, published the following year in Paris and immediately burnt by the state police. Printing shifted to "Amsterdam" (as usual) for a second 1745 edition, meaning that this was actually the third - and indeed last - of 1749 (Ray Howgego, private correspondence).

The Life and Exploits of the Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha

London: J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper,, 1749. Translated from the Original Spanish by Charles Jarvis. 2 volumes, octavo (200 x 120 mm). Contemporary brown calf skilfully rebacked to style, twin red and green morocco labels, raised bands, compartments gilt with central device, double gilt fillet and rolls in black to sides, all edges red. Illustrated with 24 engraved plates, including frontispiece and a portrait of Cervantes, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces. Boards rubbed and with some minor surface loss, labels a little scuffed, joints slightly worn, contents lightly browned, but overall an excellent set in attractive bindings. The second edition of the Jarvis translation. Charles Jarvis (also known as Jervas) was the first translator to point out the inaccuracies of previous English versions of the novel, and his translation, which was originally published in 1742, proved to be the most popular of the 18th century. This immortal work was voted the best book of all time in a survey of 100 of the world's leading authors. Don Quixote is one of those universal works which are read by all ages at all times, and there are very few who have not at one time or another felt themselves to be Don Quixote confronting the windmills or Sancho Panza at the inn.
