History of Tom Jones, a Foundling, The

London: Printed for A. Millar, 1749. - The True First Edition of Henry Fielding's Tom Jones Bound by The Guild of Women BindersFIELDING, Henry. The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling. In Six Volumes. London: Printed for A. Millar, 1749.First edition, first issue, with the errata leaf (c8 recto) in Volume I and with the errata uncorrected. Six twelvemo volumes (6 3/16 x 3 13/16 inches; 158 x 96 mm.). lxii, [1, errata], [1, blank], 214; [2], 324; [2], 370; [2], 312; [2], 294; [2], 304 pp. Bound without the final blanks in Volume I (K12), and Volume III (R12). With all of the cancels called for by Rothschild: B9 and B10 in Volume I; B4, B5, and N12 in Volume II; H8, H9, H10, M3, and Q11 in Volume III; and N8 in Volume V. Decorative woodcut tail-pieces.Bound ca. 1900 by The Guild of Women Binders (stamp-signed on lower front turn-ins in full brown crushed levant morocco. Covers double-ruled in blind, spines with five raised bands, lettered in gilt in compartments, turn-ins ruled in blind, marbled end-papers, all edges gilt. With the maroon morocco armorial book-plate of Fleming Crooks on each paste-down. Front joint of volume one expertly and almost invisibly repaired. Volume I, F6 & F7 (pp.107-110), neatly repaired in lower gutter and margins; Volume II, E8 (pp. 87/88) with a small marginal 'tape' repair, just touching a few letters on recto; Volume III, K3 (pp. 185/186) with a very small marginal tear; Volume IV, G5 (pp. 129/130) with a tiny marginal tear. Some mainly marginal and neatly repaired worm tracks affecting blank margins and a few letters on I 10 through O 12 (pp. 187 through end); Volume VI with a small neat repair to the blank lower corner of C 10 (pp. 35/36). The majority of the errata in volume one has been corrected in a neat contemporary hand. Despite the aforementioned minor flaws, this is a very nice copy of the real first edition in a very understated binding by the Guild of Women Binders."One of the three most perfect plots ever penned" (Coleridge). For the story of the four editions published in 1749, see Cross II, pp. 120-125: "At first sight the second edition in six volumes differs from the first only in the absence of errata Close inspection, however, reveals the story of what happened. The table of contents is re-spaced so as to extend into the page formerly given to the errata; the first volume has a new tailpiece; the title-page of the fifth volume ends in a misprint; and most, though not all, of the slips made by the author and compositor have been corrected, including, with two exceptions, those contained in the errata." Cross concludes that the type was reset for the entire novel after the publication of the present edition, and that the next edition, sometimes called the "first edition, second issue," is in fact a second edition. The Guild of Women Binders, established by bookseller Frank Karslake, marketed bindings from 1898-1904.Cross III, pp. 316-317. Das dazugehörige Werk "The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords" erschien 1739 in London. John Pine (1690 - 1756) was admired in Britain as the foremost heraldic and decorative engraver of his generation. He was a close friend of William Hogarth (1697 - 1764) and a scholar the famous French engraver Bernard Picart (1673 - 1733). His first engravings exhibited the splendid ceremonial of the installation of the knights of the bath in 1725. These were followed by his admirable prints, ten in number, representing the tapestry hangings in the House of Lords, showing the fight against the Spanish Armada. These were so highly approved, that the Parliament passed an act to secure the emolument arising from their publication to him. He engraved five other plates of the same size, to accompany them, being/Diese zeigen: 1. Another View of the House of Peers, with Elizabeth on the throne, the Commons presenting their Speaker at t;he bar, from a painted print in the Cottonian Library. A copy of a beautiful Illumination of the Charter of Henry VI, to the Provost and College of Eton." 3. Soulsby A catalogue of the works of Linnæus 209. Bring Itineraria svecana 164. Cappelin Hvar finns Skåne beskrifvet s. 73. Lundberg Sveriges ichthyologiska litteratur s. 4. Utkom i tysk översättning 1756. Soulsby A catalogue of the works of Linnæus 1454 för "Sponsalia plantarum".

The Christian Pattern, Or the Imitation of Jesus Christ, Being an Abridgement of the Works of Thomas à Kempis. By a Female Hand

London: Printed 1744. Germantown: Re-Printed by Christopher Sowr, 1749. First American edition of "De Imitatione Christi". Contemporary sheep, blind rules on covers, raised bands. Head of spine lacking, some tears along joints, front endpaper and final leaf of Table of Contents partially pasted to endpapers, small library stamp on second leaf, some leaves loosened, browning. With an inscription on the endpapers "Catherine Waters her Book given by William Fishbourn (or Fishburne). Dated December the Sixth 1749" Below the same name is with a 1759 date. First American edition of "De Imitatione Christi" First American edition of this book of Christian mystical thought, which has historically appealed to Catholics and Protestants alike. Indeed, it has been "the most widely read devotional manual apart from the Bible, perhaps even surpassing the influence of such books as Pilgrim's Progress and St. Augustine's Confessiones ... this is at least partly due to the great simplicity of its style and its freedom from intellectualism or theological dogmatism." - PMM. "The Christian Pattern" was the title used both by John Wesley in 1735, and by George Stanhope, dean of Canterbury in 1698, for their versions. Although rhymes taken from the work had been published in Germantown in 1742 under the title of "Das Kleine ABC", this is the first American edition of the work, as adapted by a "Female Hand" which has yet to be identified. Library Company of Philadelphia "First American Editions" p. 9; Parsons "Catholic Americana" 6 ; PMM 13 (for 1473 edition); Shipton and Mooney 6342; Finotti "Bibliographia Catholica Americana" p. 181; Seidensticker: 9.34; Hildeburn, 1136

of the Nuremberg classical scholar Nikolaus Weber, with 51 entries by scholars, scientists, and artists of the time, including Andreas Celsius, Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr, and Christoph Jacob Trew.

Nuremberg and Altdorf, 1717-1749. - Oblong 8vo. 179 ff. with 51 entries and Weber's autogr. note of ownership on fol. 2r. Contemp. brown calf with richly gilt spine and covers. Brocade endpapers. All edges gilt. Unique scholars' album of the philologist Nikolaus Weber (1699-1751), headmaster of the Nuremberg Holy Ghost school, with entries by scholars mainly based at the Universities of Nuremberg and Altdorf. One of the most important among the contributors to this volume, almost all of which are biographically recorded, is the Swedish astronomer Andreas Celsius (1701-44), who on 22 July 1733 penned these lines: "Problema: Unam eandemq[ue] theologiam et religionem per universum terrarum orbem propagare. - Resolutio: Doceatur ubiq[ue] gentium Philosophia certa et solida" (Problem: How to spread the same theology and religion throughout the entire world? - Solution: Teach all peoples a certain and solid philosophy). On behalf of the Swedish king, Celsius had visited the principal observatories of Europe in 1732/33 to form an opinion of the current developments in astronomy. His scientific "Grand Tour" had also led him to Nuremberg, where he had spent three months at the home of the astronomer Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (see below) and had regularly participated in the specialist discussions hosted by the physician Christoph Jacob Trew (see below). 1733 is also the year of Celsius's "316 Observationes de Lumine Boreali", the first comprehensive treatise on the Northern Lights, published by Endter in Nuremberg. That year, Celsius also performed the first exact geographical measurement of the town's dimensions. - Celsius's host Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (1677-1750), known for his 1750 "Atlas coelestis", contributed his entry many years before Celsius: on 17 July 1717, he dedicated a quotation from Seneca ("Animum sursum vocant initia sua", Epist. 79). The two opposite pages by Celsius and Doppelmayr are connected by a caption (by one of the two scientists): "Sic pagina jungit amicos" (Thus a page links friends). - Another important entry is that of the physician and botanist Christoph Jakob Trew (1695-1769), who had studied medicine in Altdorf and then undertook a three-year tour through Germany, Switzerland, France, and the Netherlands. In 1720 he settled in Nuremberg as a general practicioner and became a member of the most important scientific academies; his library, encompassing more than 34,000 volumes, was considered the greatest collection of naturalist literature of its time. No less important was Trew's autograph and correspondence collection with its natural-scientific focus, containing more than 19,000 letters by polymaths from the early Renaissance to Enlightenment (including Albrecht von Haller, Conrad Gesner, and Lorenz Heister). Today, Trew is frequently associated with his principal botanical work, "Plantae selectae" (1750-73). - For many entries, Weber later added the date of the contributor's death (if he outlived them), which in several cases offers a more precise date than hitherto available. - Other contributors include Siegmund Jakob Apin (writer, pedagogue, and classical scholar, 1693-1732), Andreas Christian Eschenbach (theologian and classical scholar, 1663-1722), Johann Wilhelm Feuerlein (theologian, 1689-1766), Christoph Fürer von Haimendorf (poet, 1663-1732), Gottfried Engelhart Geiger (pedagogue, 1681-1748), Johann Jakob Hartmann (theologian, 1671-1728), Georg Jeremias Hofmann (teacher of oriental languages and theologian, 1670-1732), Johann David Köhler (historian, 1684-1755), Michael Friedrich Lochner von Hummelstein (physician and polymath, 1662-1720), Bernhard Walther Marperger (theologian and Lutheran poet, 1682-1746), Jonas Meldercreutz (mathematician and bibliophile, 1713-85), Gustav Philipp Mörl (theologian and librarian, 1673-1750), Johann Heinrich Müller (physicist, astronomer, and mathematician, 1671-1731), Joachim Negelein (theologian and classical scholar, 1675-1749), Johann Heinrich Schulze (physician and classical scholar, 1 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Essai de philosophie morale EDITION ORIGINALE

A Berlin: S.n., 1749. Fine. S.n., A Berlin 1749, In 12 (9,5x16,5cm), (4) 107pp., relié. - First edition, rare. A vignette title by Eisen. Full glossy and marbled calf contemporary. Smooth back adorned with grotesque. Part of title in red morocco. Threadbare cap. Friction to the joints and corners. The test of moral philosophy is one of two main texts (and the first chronologically) philosophy of Maupertuis, who, like all the scholars of his time, is multidisciplinary. The second writing in this area will test cosmology published in 1750 should not be mistaken about the classic title of this Treaty.; if the test is a reflection on good and evil, it is a vision of good and evil before any sensualist, based on the significant experience of an event, considering that all events are only phenomena . The work was published in Berlin, home of the philosopher country at that time. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

Ou Du Rapport Que Les Loix Doivent Avoir Avec La Constitution De Chaque Gouvernement, Les Moeurs, Le Climat, La Religion, Le Commerce,

Amsterdam: Zacharie Chatelain, 1749. hardcover. very good. Three volumes in one. Separate title pages for each volume. xxiv + 356pp., xvi + 358pp., xii + 383pp., thick 8vo, full leather gilt-decorated spine; scattered light foxing and browning, some minor chipping at spine ends, cover rubbed. Amsterdam: Chez Zacharie Chatelain, 1749. Nouvelle Edition. A very good copy. In many ways one of the most remarkable works of the eighteenth century... It took four years to write, and when it was finished almost all his friends advised him not to publish it. Montesquieu paid no attention and it was printed in Geneva in the autumn of 1748... The most distinctive aspect of this immense syllabus is its moderation: a quality not designed to achieve official approval in 1748. It is an always original survey which is neither doctrinaire, visionary, eccentric, nor over-systematic... The scheme that emerges of a liberal benevolent monarchy limited by safeguards on individual liberty was to prove immensely influential... His theories underlay the thinking which led up to the American and French Revolutions, and the United States Constitution in particular is a lasting tribute to the principles he advocated."

The sailing ship at the bottom references S. Francisco Xavier, Apostle of Japan (Francisco Xavier, Cosme de Torres (1510-1570), and his arrival at Cangoxima on August 15, 1549. LeBouteux"s map derives from a highly important line of maps which began with Inacio Moreira"s now lost manuscript map of Japan, constructed in the 1590s. While the Moreira map is in Portuguese, it is derived from an indigenous Japanese style of mapmaking called 'gyoki' maps, using cartographic conventions which date to the 9th Century. The style is apparently named for the Buddhist priest who invented the map style, with surviving examples dating back to the 13th Century. Because of this connection, it is believed that Moreira"s map derives from maps

A SUMMARY, HISTORICAL AND POLITICAL, OF THE FIRST PLANTING, PROGRESSIVE IMPROVEMENTS, AND PRESENT STATE OF THE BRITISH SETTLEMENTS IN NORTH-AMERICA

Boston. 1749/1753.. Two volumes. [2],[vi],568; [4],416pp. Contemporary gilt calf, expertly rebacked in gilt antique calf, leather labels. Armorial bookplates on front pastedowns and front free endpaper of the second volume. Ownership inscription dated 1806 on each titlepage. Some scattered tanning and foxing, small puncture hole through last dozen or so leaves of second volume. Overall a quite attractive set. Very good. With the reissue of the second volume (the original issue was dated 1751). "First American history of the whole country" - Howes. Douglass was a Scottish physician living in Boston. Although not a work noted for its accuracy, Wroth comments, "Modern critics of the SUMMARY have overlooked the fact that its author was the first to attempt this story from the viewpoint of a resident American...," and further quotes a contemporary critic in the MONTHLY REVIEW as finding it "a fuller and more circumstantial account of North- America, than is any where else to be met with." In his PRESENT STATE OF NORTH AMERICA (London, 1755) John Huske wrote: "There is not one Work yet published to the World in our Language that in any Degree deserves the Title of a History of North America, but Smith's HISTORY OF VIRGINIA, and Douglass's SUMMARY...And this last is only valuable for being the best Collection of facts in general, for a future Historian, that was ever made or published." The completion and publication of the work was interrupted by Douglass' death during the outbreak of the smallpox epidemic of 1752. A work of major importance in the writing of American history.

Basle: Libr. associes, 1749. Second edition. Very good antiquarian condition. 12mo. 4 ff., lxx, [6], 407 pp. Contemporary full calf, smooth spine elaborately gold tooled; binding with some abrasions and wear, but an attractive, unsophisticated copy. "Telliamed" is in every way a remarkable book: disguised as an Oriental fantasy, it contains perhaps the earliest appearance of one of the most important of all evolution speculations, namely the so-called ultra-neptunian theory: that the entire Earth was, and is, a marine deposit, and that all life on land originated from creatures of the sea. Maillet hypothesized that the earth was once entirely covered with water, and that the water gradually evaporated into space, causing land masses to appear. Maillet also created an ingenious methodology to calculate the age of the Earth: he concluded that the Earth is 2 billion years old (evolutionists today consider this figure to be more like 4.5 billion). It is known that Buffon, Lamark, Cuvier and Darwin read this book, and that they were very much influenced by Maillet's unorthodox, heretical views. Well aware that such an immense figure would incur the wrath of the Church, de Maillet presented his conclusions in the guise of a dialogue between a French missionary and an Eastern mystic named Telliamed, i.e.de Maillet spelled backwards. The manuscript remained unpublished until a decade after Maillet's death. In order to present his radical conclusions in the guise of an Oriental tale, Maillet interspersed monsters and mythological creatures into his text. Overtly antichristian, "Telliamed" dismisses the Flood of the Old Testament as a fable because rainfall that lasted forty days would have been insignifant to submerge entire mountains. Maillet asserted that the Earth's history could not be read from the Bible but through the rocks themselves. With uncanny prescience, Maillet describes how species have overlapping physical characteristics that suggested a common life origin, namely the sea. Through a Oriental mystic we are told that: "The little Wings had under their Belly, and which like their Fins helped them to walk in the Sea, became Feet, and served them to walk on Land."
