A SUMMARY, HISTORICAL AND POLITICAL, OF THE FIRST PLANTING, PROGRESSIVE IMPROVEMENTS, AND PRESENT STATE OF THE BRITISH SETTLEMENTS IN NORTH-AMERICA

Boston. 1749/1753.. Two volumes. [2],[vi],568; [4],416pp. Contemporary gilt calf, expertly rebacked in gilt antique calf, leather labels. Armorial bookplates on front pastedowns and front free endpaper of the second volume. Ownership inscription dated 1806 on each titlepage. Some scattered tanning and foxing, small puncture hole through last dozen or so leaves of second volume. Overall a quite attractive set. Very good. With the reissue of the second volume (the original issue was dated 1751). "First American history of the whole country" - Howes. Douglass was a Scottish physician living in Boston. Although not a work noted for its accuracy, Wroth comments, "Modern critics of the SUMMARY have overlooked the fact that its author was the first to attempt this story from the viewpoint of a resident American...," and further quotes a contemporary critic in the MONTHLY REVIEW as finding it "a fuller and more circumstantial account of North- America, than is any where else to be met with." In his PRESENT STATE OF NORTH AMERICA (London, 1755) John Huske wrote: "There is not one Work yet published to the World in our Language that in any Degree deserves the Title of a History of North America, but Smith's HISTORY OF VIRGINIA, and Douglass's SUMMARY...And this last is only valuable for being the best Collection of facts in general, for a future Historian, that was ever made or published." The completion and publication of the work was interrupted by Douglass' death during the outbreak of the smallpox epidemic of 1752. A work of major importance in the writing of American history.

Basle: Libr. associes, 1749. Second edition. Very good antiquarian condition. 12mo. 4 ff., lxx, [6], 407 pp. Contemporary full calf, smooth spine elaborately gold tooled; binding with some abrasions and wear, but an attractive, unsophisticated copy. "Telliamed" is in every way a remarkable book: disguised as an Oriental fantasy, it contains perhaps the earliest appearance of one of the most important of all evolution speculations, namely the so-called ultra-neptunian theory: that the entire Earth was, and is, a marine deposit, and that all life on land originated from creatures of the sea. Maillet hypothesized that the earth was once entirely covered with water, and that the water gradually evaporated into space, causing land masses to appear. Maillet also created an ingenious methodology to calculate the age of the Earth: he concluded that the Earth is 2 billion years old (evolutionists today consider this figure to be more like 4.5 billion). It is known that Buffon, Lamark, Cuvier and Darwin read this book, and that they were very much influenced by Maillet's unorthodox, heretical views. Well aware that such an immense figure would incur the wrath of the Church, de Maillet presented his conclusions in the guise of a dialogue between a French missionary and an Eastern mystic named Telliamed, i.e.de Maillet spelled backwards. The manuscript remained unpublished until a decade after Maillet's death. In order to present his radical conclusions in the guise of an Oriental tale, Maillet interspersed monsters and mythological creatures into his text. Overtly antichristian, "Telliamed" dismisses the Flood of the Old Testament as a fable because rainfall that lasted forty days would have been insignifant to submerge entire mountains. Maillet asserted that the Earth's history could not be read from the Bible but through the rocks themselves. With uncanny prescience, Maillet describes how species have overlapping physical characteristics that suggested a common life origin, namely the sea. Through a Oriental mystic we are told that: "The little Wings had under their Belly, and which like their Fins helped them to walk in the Sea, became Feet, and served them to walk on Land." PP. Chartreux à Paris.

This Brussels edition of what was the most popular pomological manual of the early 18th century is of particular interest because it includes, as an appendix, a reprint of the catalogue of fruit trees available from the nurseries of the Carthusian monks of Paris. During the 18th century the Pères Chartreux operated what was easily the largest nursery in Europe and supplied orchards across the continent with the best proven varieties of fruit. François Gentil, the anonymous author of LE JARDINIER SOLITAIRE, was a Carthusian lay brother who ran the nurseries for 30 years. His book was first published by Rigaud in 1704 and went through numerous French editions in addition to popular translations into English and German. The present edition appears to be based on the significantly enlarged fourth edition, which first appeared in Paris in 1712. However, none of the numerous editions published in Paris includes the nursery catalogue which is present here. The Chartreux in Paris are known to have issued at least five such catalogues before their dissolution during the French Revolution. The earliest of these that we can trace is dated 1736, and it is probably the text from this catalogue which has been reproduced here. (Fricx published an earlier edition of LE JARDINIER SOLITAIRE in 1737 which also includes a Chartreux catalogue. The present edition is in all likelihood a reprint of that text). These catalogues, all of which are rare, represent important documentation on the available fruit varieties in Europe during the 18th century. They also included notes on the characteristics and seasons for each fruit, and would have been an extremely useful reference for the fruit growers of the period. It is thus understandable that Fricx would have recognized the value of using the text from the 1736 catalogue - the most reliable description of fruit varieties of its day - as an addition to his own reprint of Gentil. We can locate no other editions of Gentil, besides the two Brussels editions of 1737 and 1749, which include a Chartreux catalogue. Plesch pg. 235 (1773 ed.). 16mo (16.6 x 10 cm); iii - xvi + 316 pp. Contemporary full leather gilt panelled spine, with raised bands, gilt lettered morocco title piece; spine and corners skillfully restored; front inner hinge has old masking tape repair, rear inner hinge has residue from removal of tape; half-title lacking.

VOYAGE AUTOUR DU MONDE, FAIT DANS LES ANNE'ES MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV. PAR GEORGE ANSON.

Amsterdam & Leipzig. 1749. - [8],xvi,333,[1]pp. plus thirty-two plates (twenty-nine folding) and three folding maps. Quarto. Three quarter calf and marbled boards, antique. Contemporary ownership inscriptions on half title and titlepage. Light foxing and soiling. Several maps with old repaired tears, without loss, at connective gutter margin. Very good. First French edition, after the first English of the previous year. The narrative, based on Anson's own journal, had an enormous popular success: for the mid- 18th-century reader, it was the epitome of adventure, and it was translated into several European languages and stayed in print through numerous editions for many years. Anson's mission was to harass Spanish shipping along the west coast of South America during 1740-43, and concluded with the capture of a Manila galleon carrying £400,000 in treasure. The text was compiled by Richard Walter, the chaplain on board the Centurion, compiled from Anson's papers and official logs. Elaborately illustrated with dozens of copper plate engravings, including numerous views of islands and harbors visited. "This compilation has long occupied a distinguished position as a masterpiece of descriptive travel.the most popular book of maritime adventure of the eighteenth century" - Hill.         Atlas Compeniarius quinquaginta selectarum tabularum geographicarum Homanni.

Nuremberg: Heirs of J.B. Homann, 1748 [maps dated 1741-1749]. - Folio (21 x 12 inches). Engraved allegorical title-page from "Atlas Novus" with recent colouring. Letterpress title-page in German and Latin. 50 double-page engraved maps, with original hand-colour in part and/or in outline (quite spotted, with one or two early repairs to verso, one or two maps a bit creased). Contemporary limp panelled calf, with central gilt supra libros of a ducal coronet above a wreath surrounding the number 50 (a bit scuffed, remains of original strap tie loosely inserted). Containing maps of the continents and the countries of Europe dated between 1741 and 1749. Maps related to America include: Planispaerium caeleste, Planiglobii terrestris, 1746, and Americae mappa generalis., 1746. Homann's prolific map and atlas production made an invaluable contribution to German regional cartography and had a profound impact on European map publishing in the eighteenth century. Founded in the year 1702, Homann's printing house became so successful that it was credited with the revival of the German printing industry, after what had been a long period of domination by the Dutch. Homann became a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1707, and in 1715 was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. By the time of his death in the year 1724, Homann had published more than 200 maps for his atlases. Under the direction of his son and son-in-law the firm would thrive well into the next century. Cf.       .

[Trans. by Charles-Philippe de Monthenault d'Egly (1696-1749)]

Amsterdam & se vend a Paris: 1749. 8vo (165 x 102 mm.). [1] f., 203 pp. The French prose translation printed in roman type on versos facing the Latin poem, in italic type, on rectos. Occasional slight paper discoloration, overall a nice copy. Contemporary French mottled calf, smooth spine gold-tooled with red morocco gilt lettering-piece, edges red-stained, marbled endpapers (minor rubbing to joints and extremities). Early 20th-c. blindstamp on leaf D4 of Dr. Jes A. Thelmier of Paris-Plaisance.*** First bilingual edition and first edition in French. Originally published in Leiden in 1655, the poem, on the ?"art of producing beautiful children,?" was the only published work of Quillet, an abbot and physician of free-thinking tendencies. The work was an unexpected and long-lived success, widely translated and frequently reprinted. Two further French translations were published before 1800. Quillet?'s poem, in four books, presents a ?"curious mixture of modern science and ancestral prejudices, Galenic medicine, already contested at this period, astrological convictions, and racism pure and simple. As the title states, it deals with producing beautiful children, in order to produce superior citizens for the state.... Quillet was a practitioner of the new, more empirical school of medicine?" (Taussig, my trans.). This is evident, for example, from his matter-of-fact description of the female reproductive organs in Book 2, a passage which however directly follows a discussion of favorable conditions for procreation, including the hour, season, and position of the stars, and counsels to women to avoid excessive movement during the sexual act, in order to both assist procreation and to avoid producing feeble offspring. The all-important task of producing a male heir is the subject of several stanzas; advice includes restricting sexual relations to the morning hours, tying up the male partner?'s left testicle, and drinking plenty of wine. Part 3 treats care during pregnancy and childbirth, and Book 4 childhood education. Quillet expresses enlightened views on the condition of women, deploring forced marriages (in Book 1), the lack of education of French women and prejudices against savantes or intellectual women (in Book 4). Quillet himself was short, red-faced, and no beauty, and unsuccessful in repeated love interests. Having heard his explanation of the meaning of the title Callipaedia, the pretty young wife of a Tour magistrate is reputed to have remarked, ?"evidently, M. l'abbé, you did not learn this art from your father.?" Brunet IV:1018; Gay-Lemonnyer I:454; cf. Sylvie Taussig, ?"Avortement et Callipédie : l?'embryon au XVIIe siècle,?" La Bioéthique, autumn 2010 issue of Mag (online).

The Christian Pattern, or the Imitation of Jesus Christ, Being an Abridgement of the Works of Thomas à Kempis. By a Female Hand

London: Printed 1744. Germantown: Re-Printed by Christopher Sowr, 1749. First American edition of "De Imitatione Christi". 1 vols. Contemporary sheep, blind rules on covers, raised bands. Binding worn, small chips from head and foot of spine, joints starting, free endpapers missing, some leaves loosened, text browned. Bookplate of F.E. Maser. First American edition of "De Imitatione Christi". 1 vols. First American Edition of Thomas à Kempis. First American edition of this book of Christian mystical thought, which has historically appealed to Catholics and Protestants alike. Indeed, it has been "the most widely read devotional manual apart from the Bible, perhaps even surpassing the influence of such books as Pilgrim's Progress and St. Augustine's Confessiones ... this is at least partly due to the great simplicity of its style and its freedom from intellectualism or theological dogmatism." - PMM. "The Christian Pattern" was the title used both by John Wesley in 1735, and by George Stanhope, dean of Canterbury in 1698, for their versions. Although rhymes taken from the work had been published in Germantown in 1742 under the title of "Das Kleine ABC", this is the first American edition of the work, as adapted by a "Female Hand" which has yet to be identified.

VIII, 128, [2] pp. Illustrated with 21 engraved folding plates. 4to., 227 x 165 mm, bound in contemporary Italian vellum over boards, author and title in early ink on spine, and (faded) ink writing on front cover. In Venezia: Appresso Gio. Battista Recurti, 1749. |~||~||~||~| First and Only Edition of "the first work in Italian to deal exclusively with the subject of fireworks for pleasure. The book claims to have modernised and improved the inventions of Frézier, Hanzelet, Henrion, Ozanam and Simienowicz" (Philip, Bibliography of Firework Books, p. 3). The text is based upon Biringuccio's Pirotechnica but Biringuccio's emphasis was on metallurgy and smelting rather than fireworks. Alberti's La Pirotechnia is the first Italian book to describe the technical aspects of recreational fireworks, with sections on the materials; how to construct combustibles; uses, not only for festivals but also for street lamps resistant to wind and water, and for illuminating and decorating theater productions; spectacular aquatic fireworks; and special effects, including how to form sun, moon, and star shapes.

Bring Itineraria svecana 164. Soulsby A catalogue of the works of Linnæus 209. Cappelin Hvar finns Skåne beskrifvet s. 73. Utkom i tysk översättning 1756.
