Tobias Conrad Lotter

[Click Below for Full Description]

EMANUEL BOWEN.Map. "Particular Draughts and Plans of Some of the Principal Towns and Harbours belonging to the English, French, and Spaniards; in America and West Indies. Collected from the best Authorities. By Eman. Bowen." London, 1747. 17 x 14 in. There are 13 maps on one sheet, the maps are of the harbors of; "Boston," "Placentia" (Eastern Coast of Canada), "Louis Bourg," "Annapolis Royal" (Canada), "New York and Perthamboy," "S'Augustine," "Providence," "Havana," "St. Jago de Cuba," "Charles Town," "Fort Royal in Martinico" (West Indies), "Cartegena," "Porto Bello." Historical BackgroundEmanuel Bowen (1693/4-1767) was a map maker and engraver in London. Bowen's career (1720-1767) was a prominent component of London's position as a leading producer of maps and atlases during the 18th century. He served as royal map maker both for George II of England and Louis XV of France. Bowen is known for many famed maps and atlases, including; The Royal English Atlas, the Large English Atlas which he produced in partnership with mapmaker Thomas Kitchen, and his earliest publication, the Britannia Depicta, produced in partnership with mapmaker John Owen (nicknamed the Owen and Bowen Maps). Bowen's maps were different from the rest of the maps created during his time, and were very popular. What set his maps apart from the others were the facts that they were created with some of the most sophisticated cartographical detail of the time, included historical and cultural information, were very artistically designed, and were some of the largest maps print … [Click Below for Full Description]

Erfurt: J. D. Jungnicol. Small 8°, [1] engraved frontispiece, 429 pp. Text, as always mistake with numeration with lacking pp. 9-10, later marbled paper cover with green calf spine and edges, gilt embossed letter D on the cover, gilt raised bands and gilt title on red label on the spine, purple fore-edge (Very Good, frontispiece and title page mounted on old paper, tiny folds and tears in margins of end papers). A first edition of popular German Robisonade, which was reprinted in the following years, in a decorative binding. - This is a first edition of Nil Hammelmanns’s travels, printed in Erfurt in 1747. The frontispiece shows four maps of imaginary island. Although the title mentions the book was allegedly translated from Dutch, is this probably an original German text. The second edition of the work was printed in the same year by the same publisher, and was followed by sequences in the following years. Robinsonade - The story of Robinson Crusoe was based on a real life experience by a sailor Alexander Selkirk, who was marooned on Juan Fernández Island (today Robinson Crusoe Island ) for over four years, between 1704-1709. Upon his return a book based on his life was published with a title Fame of having lived four Years and four Months alone on the Island of Juan Fernandez, which inspired Daniel Defoe (circa 1660-1731) to write The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on S … [Click Below for Full Description]

D'ALEMBERT, LEONHARD EULER, DANIEL BERNOULLI. - THE CONTROVERSY ABOUT VIBRATING STRINGS. - [FIRST APPEARANCE OF THE WAVE EQUATION.]
1747. (Berlin, Haude et Spener, 1749-67). 4to. Bound together in one very nice recent marbled paper binding with gilt leather title-label to front board. All 9 without wrappers as extracted from "Memoires de L'Academie Royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres", Tome III pp. 214-219 a. 1 engraved plate, Tome III pp. 220-249 a. 2 engraved plates, Tome VI pp. 355-360, Tome IV pp. 67-85 a. 1 engraved plate., Tome XXI pp. 307-335 a. 3 engraved plates, Tome IX pp. 196-222 a. 1 engraved plate, Tome IX pp. 173-195 a. 2 engraved plates, Tome IX, pp. 147-172 a. 1 engraved plate, Tome XXI pp. 281-306 a. 1 engraved plate. ¶ All 9 papers in first editions, in the periodical form. In D'Alemberts paper the WAVE-EQUATION appeared for the first time in print, and thus he was the first person to solve the mathematical equation for a vibrating string, and in the same connection it was the first success with partial differential equations. This paper opened the series of papers which are offered here. The three authors came to different conclusions on the nature of an "arbitrary" function and its expansion in trigonometric functions, a controversy brought to a conclusion only in the 19th century by Fourier, Cauchy, Dirichlet and Riemann. "Nowadays this is the starting point for SUPERSTRINGS, which some people call "THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING". D'Alembert could not have guessed the importance his discovery would one day have. He was interested in strings because he was interested in music. He was a friend of the composer Rameau, and once wrote a book explaining Rameau's theory of harmony. SPENCER, Thomas.
London T. Butler –1753, 1747. Landscape folio (337 x 455 mm); 24 (of 34) engraved plates after Thomas Spencer and James Seymour, by Pierre Charles Canot, Remi Parr, and Henry Roberts; some foxing and browning, several plates with neatly repaired tears and some marginal reinforcement; contemporary half calf over marbled boards, rebacked, extremities worn otherwise a very good example. A fine and very rare set of racing prints. Sparrow notes its rarity in 1922, 'rare no doubt, because so many of the copies have been broken up in order that the prints might be sold one by one' (W.S. Sparrow, British Sporting Artists). Thomas Spencer may be regarded as a close follower of his contemporary, James Seymour; in fact, his manner of painting is in some ways more engaging than Seymour's since, despite the sometimes stiff portrayal of grooms and attendants, his horses themselves appear more fluid. Each engraving comprises of an image of a horse at centre with its jockey surrounded by panels containing details of the pedigree and performance of each race-horse. The horses are as follows: Fox, Squirril, Sebbury, Brokelsby Betty, Volunteer, Othello, Starling, Crab. Bay Bolten, Lath, Basto, Carlisle, Second, Young Cartouche, Spanking Roger, Bonny Black, Bal'd Charlotte, Creeping Molly, Lamprie, Childers, Fearnought, Conqueror, Old Scar, and Old Cartouche. GALLI DE BIBIENA (Jean)
[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[-], A-I(2), K-U(2), X-Z(2), 2A-2G(2), 2H, 3 maps, a-c(2), [a]-g(2); pp., [1]-124, 11, [1 blank], [4], 13-15, 17-24, [1 blank], 39, [1 blank], [1]. This Bill, one of the most complicated and notorious set before the court of Chancery, was so protracted that it was not settled before the events that brought about the Revolutionary War were set in motion, and was subsequently forgotten. It has its origins in the conflicting way in which the victorious Duke of York, who had received New Jersey as a reward from his brother King Charles II for wresting New York from the Dutch in 1664, then gave it to Sir George Carteret and Lord Berkley, at the same time as his legal representative, the new English Governor, Richard Nicholl, approved the purchase of some land around Elizabethtown in New Jersey from the Leni Lenape Indians by local settlers. Over time Carteret and Berkley sold shares in their land to investors, who together became the Proprietors of New Jersey. Decades later, the long-standing dispute over who should pay what taxes, and to whom, in the area of Elizabeth, reached a head. The now thirty-nine Proprietors, including John, Earl of Stair, of the Eastern Division of New Jersey brought about this suit against about four hundred and fifty resident settlers, the 'Elizabethtown Associates', rather derisively known as the 'Clinker-Lot-Right-Men' in the Bill, led by Benjamin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Duhamel du Monceau (Henri L.)
L'Imprimerie Royale, Paris, 1747. 4to. Full contemporary calf with gilt titles and decorative spine. Engraved and woodcut initials, woodcut diagrams and head- and tail-pieces. Joints cracked, though intact. Spine laid down. Internally fine, very good overall. With the bookplate of Edward, Duke of Norfolk. First edition of an exhaustive work on the fabrication of hemp rope for ships, from raising the plant, to extracting the raw materials, to manufacturing cordage. But perhaps most significant as one of the earliest treatises on the commercial cultivation of cannabis. Includes two lovely and detailed fold-out plates of the male and female plants (both fine) that would make High Times proud. Though not exactly institutionally rare (OCLC locates ten copies of this edition, seven in the U.S.), it is so in the trade, with none currently in commerce and only a handful at auction since 1980. A second volume was published in 1769. Polak, 2858. Scott 341 (citing only the 2nd edition, this one presumably scarcer). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

After several unsuccessful Attempts to propagate it from Seeds, I procured Plants of it at several Times from America, but with little better Success, for they gradually diminished, and produced no Blossoms; 'till my curious Friend Mr. Peter Collinson, excited by a View of its dryed Specimens, and Description of it, procured some Plants of it from Pensilvania, which Climate being nearer to that of England, than from whence mine came, some Bunches of Blossoms were produced in July 1740, and in 1741, in my Garden at Fulham." (Catesby) In 1712, the English-born artist and naturalist Mark Catesby embarked on a series of expeditions to the southern colonies of British North America. Catesby was enthralled by the wildlife of the New World, and he spent years traveling by foot through parts of present-day Virginia, Georgia, the Carolinas and the Bahamas.
Wellcome IV, p. 455.
