STUART (Charles Edward, 1720-1788, 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', the Young Pretender)
Unsigned Autograph Letter, in French with translation, in his clear rounded hand, to 'Monsieur', the Comte d'Argenson, (Marc Pierre de Voyer de Paulmy, 1696-1764, Secretary of State for War, 1743-1757, under Louis XV), saying he has received his letter, "tomorrow I am thinking of leaving for Avignon" and that "there or elsewhere I will be always ready whenever His Most Christian Majesty desires anything of me", 1 side 8½" x 6½", [Paris], 24th January For the Prince to depart without taking leave of the King in person was an astonishing breach of etiquette. When he reached the Papal city of Avignon, after a week on icy roads, he revealed to his followers that he was really going to Spain, to get the help to invade England that he was not getting from France. In so doing he was hijacking his brother Henry Benedict, who had proposed to do just that.himself.The previous September, after 5 months in the heather following Culloden, Bonnie Prince Charlie was the most famous man in Europe. He took ship with the French from Loch nan Uamh on 20th September (old style) and landed at Roscoff.on10th October (new style). He arrived in Paris to enormous cheering crowds. One of the first to entertain him to supper was the Comte d'Argenson, who had kept abreast of his campaign with frequent reports from the Marquis d'Éguilles. (D'Éguilles. was captured at Culloden but freed after negotiating the surrender of Inverness). However, the honeymoon lasted only about a fortnight. Charles began demanding help for an invasion of England, which the French refused. They talked only in terms of a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Duhamel du Monceau
Paris: L'Imprimerie Royale, 1747. Condition: Very Good. 4to. Full contemporary calf with gilt titles and decorative spine. Engraved and woodcut initials, woodcut diagrams and head- and tail-pieces. Joints cracked, though intact. Spine laid down. Internally fine, very good overall. With the bookplate of Edward, Duke of Norfolk. First edition of an exhaustive work on the fabrication of hemp rope for ships, from raising the plant, to extracting the raw materials, to manufacturing cordage. But perhaps most significant as one of the earliest treatises on the commercial cultivation of cannabis. Includes two lovely and detailed fold-out plates of the male and female plants (both fine) that would make High Times proud. Though not exactly institutionally rare (OCLC locates ten copies of this edition, seven in the U.S.), it is so in the trade, with none currently in commerce and only a handful at auction since 1980. A second volume was published in 1769. Polak, 2858. Scott 341 (citing only the 2nd edition, this one presumably scarcer). [Attributes: First Edition]

ALEMBERT, Jean Le Rond d’
Norman [34 : "Alembert’s treatise on winds contained the first general use of partial differential equations in mathematical physics, a technique later perfected by Euler."], DSB [I, p. 113 : "In 1747 d'Alembert published two more important works, one of which, the Réflexions sur la cause générale des vents, won a prize from the Prussian Academy. In it appeared the first general use of partial differential equations in mathematical physics. Euler later perfected the techniques of using these equations. The pattern was to become a familiar one : d'Alembert, Daniel Bernoulli, or Clairaut would pioneer a technique, and Euler would take it far beyond their capacity to develop it. Hegi, Franz (1774 Lausanne ?

"Among Quaker women of her day, Sophia Hume had an extraordinary knowledge of arts, literature, and theology, to some extent the product of her years as an Anglican. Although conversion curbed and guided her intellectual pursuits within limits approved by Quakers, she yet found it hard to justify erudition by a woman, and harder to justify her public life, by her own principles. The result was a paradoxical career: as a minister and writer she upheld the traditional view that woman should lead a secluded life devoted to home and church, as a Quaker bluestocking she expounded scripture and culled quotations from ancient and modern Christian writers to defend her sect" (Notable American Women). London: at the expense of the author, [1729-] 1731-1743 [-1747]. Dimensions: approx 14 x 20 inches. Full margins and original hand color. Copperplate engraving by Mark Catesby, from "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands". First edition, published in London in 1731-44. "These Trees usually grow to a large Size, having a light coloured smooth Bark, under which is contained a white milky Juice, of a very poisonous Nature; the Leaves are smooth, serrated, some- what short, and pointed. The Flowers grow at the Ends of the Branches, consisting of small Tufts of very little yellow pappous Blossoms, placed at Intervals, the Length of about three Inches: The Fruit was the Size of the Figure, growing erect, and shaped like a Pear, or rather a Fig; but not being ripe, or even full grown, I had no Opportunity of seeing its Seeds, which Sir Hans Sloane, in his Nat. Hist. of Jamaica says are several, somewhat resembling those of a Melon, and are contain'd in a roundish very hard Stone, with many sharp Points on each Side of it." (Catesby) In 1712, the English-born artist and naturalist Mark Catesby embarked on a series of expeditions to the southern colonies of British North America. Catesby was enthralled by the wildlife of the New World, and he spent years traveling by foot through parts of present-day Virginia, Georgia, the Carolinas and the Bahamas. Over the course of his journeys, he encountered and documented uncountable varieties of animal and plant life that were entirely unknown to Europeans. "In the Bahama Islands these Trees grow to about fifteen Inches in Thickness, and thirty or more Feet in Height; with a rough brown Bark: The Leaves are like those of the Phillirea, growing by Pairs. The Flowers are globular, composed of numerous scarlet Filaments, produced from small green Capsula's; many of the Flowers grow together on long Footstalks, at the Ends of slender Branches, making an elegant Appearance. The Flowers are succeeded by Pods, of a reddish brown Colour, containing many flatish round shining black Seeds, which when ripe are discharged from out of the Pods, but hang thereto by a scarlet mucilaginous, spongy Substance, which incloses a third Part of every Seed: The Pods grow three or four together, in a wreathed or spiral Manner, which Nature seems to have designed for displaying its Beauties to Advantage; for had the Pods been streight, as those of French Beans, these glittering Seeds would have been much obscured. The Seeds are Food of Wild Pigeons, &c." (Catesby) In 1712, the English-born artist and naturalist Mark Catesby embarked on a series of expeditions to the southern colonies of British North America. Catesby was enthralled by the wildlife of the New World, and he spent years traveling by foot through parts of present-day Virginia, Georgia, the Carolin … [Click Below for Full Description]

His drawings and written observations were the raw material for an unprecedented project: a scientific account of previously uninvestigated wildlife, with illustrations taken from life. The result was the most sweeping, complete and unique natural history study ever done. Despite Catesby's initial difficulties in finding subscribers, his striking finished product received widespread acclaim. Catesby's charming, distinctive style sets his work apart from all artists who later followed his example. The overt simplicity of his compositions is deceiving; the artist arranged each of his images with great care, often combining seemingly incongruous elements to create the most artful scene possible. Very few artists were so personally involved in the completion of a published work, and Catesby's images convey what the artist m … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Fruit is round, and grows in Bunches, like Currans, but larger, and of a purple Colour, with a single Stone in the Middle: In December the Fruit is ripe, and is the Food of Pigeons and many wild Animals; it is a pleasant tasted Fruit, the Wood is hard and durable: It grows on Rocks, on many of the Bahama Islands."
