"Among Quaker women of her day, Sophia Hume had an extraordinary knowledge of arts, literature, and theology, to some extent the product of her years as an Anglican. Although conversion curbed and guided her intellectual pursuits within limits approved by Quakers, she yet found it hard to justify erudition by a woman, and harder to justify her public life, by her own principles. The result was a paradoxical career: as a minister and writer she upheld the traditional view that woman should lead a secluded life devoted to home and church, as a Quaker bluestocking she expounded scripture and culled quotations from ancient and modern Christian writers to defend her sect" (Notable American Women). Second edition -first obtainable-, enlarged, extraordinarily rare Visayan grammar printed in Manila at the Jesuit printing house, written by a Filipino Jesuit, and printed on "Asian" paper, here presented in a fine example in contemporary binding; Ezguerra or Ezquerra (1601-1670) was a Philippine-born Jesuit Priest and missionary and educator of whom little biographical data is preserved. [Fielding, Henry]
London: M. Cooper, 1747. First edition. [ii], iv, [2, blank], 5-44 pp., with half-title and A4 blank. 8vo. The last of Fielding's political tracts, a response to an anti-ministerial pamphlet -- An Apology for the Conduct of a Late Celebrated Second-Rate Minister -- that posed as the apology of Thomas Winnington, a prominent Whig and member of the government. "Winnington" claims that he and every memember of the Walpole government were secret Jacobites, bent on persuing policies so destructive to England's health that the Hanoverians would be booted out and the Stuarts restored to the throne. Fielding's reply, which drips with anti-Catholic venom, is derided by Battestin as essentially hack work done to order by his friends and patrons in the government. There was even the suggestion in a pamphlet response entitled The Patriot Analized (1748), that the original Apology was itself a product of Fielding's pen, an elaborate set-up which enabled him to doubly profit from his Answer. A rare complete copy, with half-title and blank A4, of an uncommon work on the market. Cross III, p. 315. Provenance: Louis & Anne Marie Davidson (bookplate). Modern blue wrappers. Stab holes, a few paper flaws on half-title and advertisement, and small closed tears on half-title. In a custom quarter cloth and card folder.

Bowlker, Richard
Worcester: Printed by M. Olivers, [ca. 1747]. First edition. Printer's ornaments at beginning and end of text. [4], 95 pp. 1 vols. Small 8vo. The Rare First, Taverner's Copy. Westwood & Satchell note that although only Richard Bowlker's name appears in the first edition, in the second, his son Charles seems to lay claim to the work. At his death in 1779, Charles "was considered the most finished fly-fisher of his day." The work went into many editions: this, the first, is a rare book indeed. This particular copy has a distinguished provenance. The rear pastedown bears an interesting ownership inscription, dated 1758, of John Rogers, from the borough of Stone in Shropshire; and the front pastedown bears the following inscription, linking this rare incunable of fly fishing to two modern masters: "John Waller Hills to Eric Taverner." For Hills, see pp. 130-6 of Robb's Notable Angling Literature; Taverner is author of Trout Fishing from All Angles and Salmon Fishing (both titles in the Lonsdale Library), The Making of a Trout Stream, etc., etc. Westwood & Satchell, pp. 39-40; Heckscher 251: ESTC T112413 (dating this edition 1758?); Gingrich, Fishing in Print, pp. 69-74; Sage Catalogue, p. 41.

WILLIAM IV, Prince of Orange].
, . . Berlin Kat. 2962; Landwehr, Splendid ceremonies 215; Muller, Historieplaten 3868; Praz, pp. 558-559. First and only edition of a series of illustrations of the decorations displayed during the inauguration of William IV, Prince of Orange, who in 1747 became the Stadtholder of all the United Provinces and general and admiral of the Dutch army and navy.Around 1740 the Dutch Republic got involved in the War of the Austrian Succession, which lead to the occupation of States' Flanders (the northern part of Flanders, part of the Dutch Republic since the Eighty Years' War) by the French in 1747. This caused an enormous unrest in the Republic as this fully exposed the weakness of the Dutch defences, leading to a strong wish for restoration of the stadtholderate. When this was restored by the inauguration of William IV, it brought an end to the Second Stadtholderless Period (1702-1747). A very good copy.

JONG, JACOBUS DE.
, . . A manuscript calligraphic copybook by a student learning penmanship, but with a calligraphic title-page giving his name, the title, place and year. Jacobus de Jong is a fairly common name, but Noordwijk-Binnen (now part of Noordwijk in South Holland, on the coast near Leiden) is fairly small and a boy of that name was baptised there (Dutch Reformed) on 27 August 1747, which would make him 14 if he began work on the present copybook at the beginning of the 1761/62 school year. He was the son of Roelof de Jong and his second wife Elizabeth Verkinderen.Nearly all leaves are written on the rectos only, mostly using Bible quotations (Old Testament, New Testament and Psalms) as sample texts, but the first leaf (before the title-page) serves as a front wrapper and has a verse quotation in 4 lines of large script on the front and a couple practise Gs on the verso (trials for the first letter of the title), while the last leaf has a normal sample text on the recto but has verses illustrated with penwork figures on the verso, serving as a back wrapper. The texts on both the front and the back wrapper are verses from Jacob Cats, Spiegel van den ouden ende nieuwen tijdt. All texts are in Dutch and executed in a roundhand (pointed pen) script, the most common style at this date for commercial correspondence. All the writing is fairly large, generally (but not strictly) decreasing from the first to the last pages, with an x-height ranging from 15 to 2 mm. Most samples include pen flourishes.Like nearly all children's school exercise books, this one has suffered with use. The edge … [Click Below for Full Description]

English Law]: [Popish Plot]
1747. Publication details and pagination provided in the listing below. 20th-century tan buckram, spine gilt, leather label. Minor edge wear, soiling and staining, small gouge to top of front joint, binding broken after p.2 of first work. Library stamp to first titlepage, some short edge tears. Good. An interesting collection of 17th-century English trial accounts. Some of the works touch on or directly involve the Popish Plot, a fictitious anti-Catholic conspiracy that resulted in the executions of over twenty people. Titus Oates was the instigator of the conspiracy and his trial for perjury is present here. The trial of William Scroggs here also related to the Popish Plot - Scroggs was the chief justice of the court during the trials of those accused in the Popish Plot and is largely responsible for their convictions. The trials involving the Popish Plot here come towards the end of the hysteria. Also present here are two works relating to the trial of Elizabeth Cellier. Known as the "Popish Midwife," Cellier also suffered the vehement anti-Catholic sentiment prevelant in England at the time. She was acquitted of attempting the King's kidnapping in the "Meal-Tub Plot;" but her expose of that matter, "Malice Defeated" led to her trial for "Scandalous Libel," for which she was fined, pilloried and her book burnt. Charles Marie de La Condamine (1701-1774), French explorer, geographer, and mathematician, spent ten years in present-day Ecuador. The calculations performed by expedition members demonstrated that the earth was flattened at the poles. La Condamine remained in South America after the work was completed, measuring the length of a degree latitude at the equator and preparing the first map of the Amazon region based on astronomical observations. The map in the present edition is: "A Map of the course of the Maragnon, or Great River of Amazons, as far as it is navigable from Jaen de Bracamoros to its, Mouth, Comprehending also the province of Quito, and the Coast of Guiana, from the North Cape to Essequeba. (30),368,(8) pp., 1 large folded engraved map, 4 folded engraved plates. text clean and fine, plates with some browning. ¶ Scarce second edition. "Johann Anderson (1674-1743) was the son of a whaling ship owner from Hamburg, Germany. He became a lawyer, served in the Hamburg Senate, and was mayor of the city for many years. Anderson systematically gathered the available literature on Iceland, Greenland, and the adjacent seas, as well as gleaned information from sailors and merchants. This book, which he prepared mainly in the 1730s, was published in 1746, after his death. It includes descriptions of the land and peoples of Iceland and Greenland, and covers topics ranging from the herring fishery to the volumes of oil produced by different species of whales. Although he was wrong on some points, Anderson made scientific contributions in a number of areas. He developed a system for classifying species of whales and made estimates of commercial marine stocks that prefigured later work in fisheries biology. Appended to the work was a grammar and vocabulary of the Inuit language spoken on Greenland, and a selection of extracts from religious texts presented in German, Danish, and Inuit. ALEMBERT, Jean Le Rond d'
Engraved vignette on title, one engraved headpiece, & two folding engraved plates. 4 p.l., xxviii, 194, 138 pp. 4to, cont. mottled calf (head of spine with a small chip, several signatures browned or foxed), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: David l'aîné, 1747. First edition (?). This and the Berlin edition of the same year (with Latin text only) are both variously claimed as the true first edition, and it is perhaps logical to suppose that a prize-winning essay should appear first under the imprint of the prize-giver. However, the imprimatur of the French Académie des Sciences was granted on 6 September 1746, and the Paris edition was on sale in November of that year (see d'Alembert's letter of 6 January 1747 to Euler). The text of the Paris edition comprises the Latin original of the prize submission, together with its French translation with "various more or less considerable additions" (Avertissement). "In 1747 d'Alembert published two more important works, one of which, the Réflexions sur la cause générale des vents, won a prize from the Prussian Academy. In it appeared the first general use of partial differential equations in mathematical physics. Euler later perfected the techniques of using these equations. As a work on atmospheric tides it was successful, and Lagrange continued to praise d'Alembert's efforts many years later."-D.S.B., I, p. 113. Very good copy of a very rare edition. From the library of Marchese Giulio Stanga Carlo Trecco (d. 1832), amateur mathematician and physicist who formed a large collection of scientific instruments, w … [Click Below for Full Description]
