CATESBY, Mark (1683-1749).
London: at the expense of the author, [1729-] 1731-1743 [-1747]. Dimensions: approx 14 x 20 inches. Full margins and original hand color. Copperplate engraving by Mark Catesby, from "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands". First edition, published in London in 1731-44. "This is a large Tree, with a smooth light coloured Bark, the Leaves are about the Size of those of a Pear, but more rounding at the Points. The Fruit is round, and grows in Bunches, like Currans, but larger, and of a purple Colour, with a single Stone in the Middle: In December the Fruit is ripe, and is the Food of Pigeons and many wild Animals; it is a pleasant tasted Fruit, the Wood is hard and durable: It grows on Rocks, on many of the Bahama Islands." (Catesby) In 1712, the English-born artist and naturalist Mark Catesby embarked on a series of expeditions to the southern colonies of British North America. Catesby was enthralled by the wildlife of the New World, and he spent years traveling by foot through parts of present-day Virginia, Georgia, the Carolinas and the Bahamas. Over the course of his journeys, he encountered and documented uncountable varieties of animal and plant life that were entirely unknown to Europeans. His drawings and written observations were the raw material for an unprecedented project: a scientific account of previously uninvestigated wildlife, with illustrations taken from life. The result was the most sweeping, complete and unique natural history study ever done. Despite Catesby's initial difficulties in finding subscribers, his striking finished pr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Despite Catesby's initial difficulties in finding subscribers, his striking finished product received widespread acclaim. Catesby's charming, distinctive style sets his work apart from all artists who later followed his example. The overt simplicity of his compositions is deceiving; the artist arranged each of his images with great care, often combining seemingly incongruous elements to create the most artful scene possible. Very few artists were so personally involved in the completion of a published work, and Catesby's images convey what the artist m … [Click Below for Full Description]

"These Trees grow on Rocks, and frequently on the Limbs, and Trunks of Trees; occasioned by Birds scattering or voiding the Seeds which being glutinous like those of Misletto, take Root and grow. But finding not sufficient Nutriment to increase in Growth, the Roots spread on the Bark or Superficies of the Tree till they find a decayed Hole or other Lodgment wherein is some small Portion of Soil, into which they enter and become a Tree: But the Fertility of this Second Plantation being exhausted, one or more of the Roots are discharged out of the Hole, and fall directly to the Ground, tho' at forty Feet distance, here again they take Root, and become a much larger Tree than before: The Rosin of this Tree is used for the Cure of Sores in Horses, and also instead of Tallow for Boats and other Vessels. Bologna, Bartolomeo Borghi, 1747. VIII, 313, (1) SS. Mit 16 gest. Tafeln und mehreren gedr. Schemata im Text. Flexibler italienischer Pappband der Zeit. 8vo. Erste Ausgabe. Lex. der Schweiz I, zit. n. DBA II 16, 369). I, 196. "Contains arithmetical puzzles, tricks with cards and dice, problems relating to the theory of numbers, sleight of hand, etc." (Honeyman). [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Baretti, Giuseppe
In Venezia, Appresso Giuseppe Bertella, 1747, Edizione originale. Ottimi esemplari, molto freschi e in barbe. Baretti). Cook, Captain James.] [John Cleveley the younger, in the style of.]
Two original watercolours, each approx. 420 x 596mm (16 1⁄2 x 23 1⁄2 ), on paper, ?trimmed to image, minor chipping to margins, but in very good condition, the colouring very bright and attractive, each watercolour now matted and contained in acid-free folders. These famous images of Cook s third voyage derive from sketches by James Cleveley, the carpenter on board the expedition ship Resolution and son of the marine artist John Cleveley. After his return to England, James made the sketches available to his brother, also called John (known as John Cleveley the younger, 1747-1786), who worked them up into a group of accomplished watercolours. Four of these scenes were engraved by Francis Jukes, the prolific aquatinter (ODNB), and published by Thomas Martyn as Views in the South Seas (1787-8). The very rare prospectus for these published aquatints provides information concerning the origins of the images (see Forbes Hawaiian National Bibliography 143). These highly accomplished watercolours seem to have been based on the published versions of Cleveley s sketches.

MARIE ANTOINETTE, Princesse de Bavière ].
S.l.n.d. (Munich, 1747). in-4. "This is about half the Size of an English Squirrel, and almost of the same Colour, except that a Pair of black Lifts, with a yellowish white Lift between them, extend almost the Length of the Body on both Sides; also a single black Lift runs along the Ridge of the Back. The Eyes are black and large, the Ears rounding, the Tail long, flat, and thick set with Hairs, which are much shorter than those of other Squirrels. These Squirrels abide in the Woods of Carolina, Virginia, &c. Their Food is Nuts, Acorns, and such like as other Squirrels feed on. They being brought up tame, are very familiar and active. The Fruit which the Squirrel is feeding on, belongs to a Tree or Shrub which General Oglethorp brought from Georgia by the Name of the Wild Nutmeg; from its being aromatic, and other Circumstances, induces me to think it is the Fruit of the Plant I have described, p. 46. Vol. I. which Description is imperfect, because the Fruit was not then formed: The Size and Form of this is as 'tis here represented. It divides into four Openings, discovering four dark green Seeds within the Fruit." Over the course of his journeys, he encountered and documented uncountable varieties of animal and plant life that were entirely unknown to Europeans. Duhamel du Monceau
Paris: L'Imprimerie Royale, 1747. Condition: Very Good. 4to. Full contemporary calf with gilt titles and decorative spine. Engraved and woodcut initials, woodcut diagrams and head- and tail-pieces. Joints cracked, though intact. Spine laid down. Internally fine, very good overall. With the bookplate of Edward, Duke of Norfolk. First edition of an exhaustive work on the fabrication of hemp rope for ships, from raising the plant, to extracting the raw materials, to manufacturing cordage. But perhaps most significant as one of the earliest treatises on the commercial cultivation of cannabis. Includes two lovely and detailed fold-out plates of the male and female plants (both fine) that would make High Times proud. Though not exactly institutionally rare (OCLC locates ten copies of this edition, seven in the U.S.), it is so in the trade, with none currently in commerce and only a handful at auction since 1980. A second volume was published in 1769. Polak, 2858. Scott 341 (citing only the 2nd edition, this one presumably scarcer). [Attributes: First Edition]

Liegelsteiner, Georg
Leipzig, Wolfgang Deer, 1747. 8vo. (10), 143, (9) pp. With fine woodcut frontispiece showing saw and pruning knife, 1 engraved folding plate, and 30 woodcut text illustrations. Contemp. half calf and speckled boards, spine richly gilt with gilt lettered label. The first western book on the cultivation of dwarf trees, or "bonsai". Georg Liegelsteiner was court gardener to the Archbishop of Salzburg in Austria, Count Franz Anton Harrach. His book on dwarf trees, although now largely forgotten and overlooked in botanical and horticultural literature, proved extraordinarily successful in its day, achieving six editions including the original edition of 1705. Liegelsteiner "writes about dwarfing trees so that they look like a very beautiful big tree, but only much smaller. He understands tree physiology like only a small minority of bonsai enthusiasts today. He explains in detail how to shorten roots and transplant trees often, how to shorten branches, how to correct a one-sided tree. He explains how to cut back a tree to a stump, let the new shoots grow, cut them back at strategic points, let the new shoots grown again and cut them back. It is exactly the 'Chinese' clip-and-grow technique. He makes drawings which explain the development of a dwarf tree in a way that could not be improved" (Walter Pall, Dwarf Trees of George Liegelsteiner, in: Bonsai Magazine 3 [2000]). The edition offered here is the final one, published after the death of its author, with a very interesting new preface which attempts to sketch a history of dwarf trees in Europe. It suggests that the art of gro … [Click Below for Full Description]

"There are great Plenty of this Kind of Turtle amongst the Bahama-Islands, yet none breed there, they come from Cuba and the Continent. Their Eggs, which differ much, and are plainly distinguishable from those of the other Kinds, being never found there; whereas most of these Islands do plentifully abound with the Eggs of the others. This Kind is preferred to the Rest, and is esteemed a very Wholsome and delicious Food: It receives its Name from the Fat of it being of a green Colour. Sir Hans Sloane has informed us in his Natural History of Jamaica, that 40 Sloops are employed by the Inhabitants of Port Royal in Jamaica for the catching them: Their Markets are supplyed with Turtle as ours in England are with Butchers Meat. The Bahamians carry many of them to Carolina where they turn to good Account, not because that plentiful Country wants provision, but they are esteemed there as a rarity, and for the Delicacy of their Flesh. They feed on a Kind of Grass growing at the Bottom of the Sea commonly called Turtle Grass." Presso Giambattista Pasquali, 1747. [with] Nollet, Jean-Antoine. Venezia: Giambatista Pasquali, 1750. 8vo. 334, [2 (blank)] pp.; 8 fold. plts. Two first Italian translations: Nollet's Essai sur l'électricité des corps, and his Recherches sur les causes particulieres des phénoménes électriques, each translated by an unknown hand. Abbé Nollet -- the first professor of experimental physics at the University of Paris -- achieved great notoriety for his empirical experiments in => the conduction of electrical force, often involving numerous human participants (including, once, 180 soldiers at Versailles). In the first work here, he offers his two-current theory of electrical conduction, which conflicted with and was eventually superseded by Franklin's work. This first edition appends (with a separate title-page, but continuous pagination) an Italian translation of A Sequel to the Experiments and Observations Tending to Illustrate the Nature and Properties of Electricity, first published in 1746 by Sir William Watson, a physician, botanist, and physicist who was as much of a pioneer in English electrical studies as Nollet was in French. The Ricerche is an early entrant in the corpus of works on => electrophysiology. Also, "The author lays down a theory, according to which the cause of electrical phenomenon is the "effluence and affluence" of a subtle fluid which is everywhere present. Some interesting experiments are described with vacuum tubes a … [Click Below for Full Description]

BONOMO Gabriele (1694-1760)
FRANCESCO VALENZA, 1747. [Click Below for Full Description]

UGHI, Lodovico
[Venice,: Ludovico Furlanetto Sopra el Ponte dé Baretteri, c1747]. DescriptionEngraved map, mounted on linen. NotesThe first state of Ughis rare reduction of his monumental map of Venice. Lodovico Ughis topographical map is a landmark in the cartographic history of Venice. Successive Venetian mapmakers in general did not significantly alter the appearance of the city: among the exceptions is Ughis work. Not only is it one of the largest printed plans of Venice, but it also served for centuries as a model for subsequent maps. Ughis plan is one of the largest maps of Venice ever published, and the first map of the city based upon accurate field surveys. To the upper right is a personification of Venice with the lion of Saint Mark at her feet, surrounded by marine creatures representing her marriage to the sea and the riches she derives from it. The image is taken from a drawing by the Venetian painter Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734). The cartouche at the bottom right explains that when the canals names are missing, they are named after the Saint of the closest Church. Also, that the ferries are represented by the small dots cutting through the canals.Examples are held at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France; Houghton Library, Harvard; Zentralbibliothek Zurich (map only); Leiden University Library; and Dresden University Library.
