L'Aia. Historical-geographic map showing the places occupied by the Austrian Imperial Army on April 16, 1747, during the siege of Genoa. 595 505mm

Giuseppe VASI
Famous as the "maestro" of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Giuseppe Vasi reveals in this monumental work his graphic inventivness. Kingston, NY, 1747. Good +. A ledger from the transitional period from Dutch to English control in colonial New York, showing the Dutch roots of the state's commerce and culture. The manuscript account book was for the company of Henry Dewitt and Dirk Tenbroek, merchants in Kingston NY and is written in Old Dutch. Most of the early names recorded in the ledger are Dutch, while the later 1740s, they are written in English. The ledger also includes a 1740 record of a slave purchase by Philip Livingston, a statesman of Dutch lineage who later signed the Declaration of Independence. The Kingston company of Dewitt and Ten Broeck was owned by influential early Dutch families. Dirck W Ten Broeck (1715 - ?) also played a role in the Revolution. He represented the manor of Livingston in the Provincial Assembly during the Revolution when it met at Kingston in 1777, and again in 1778 in Poughkeepsie. He remained an Assembly representative until 1783. The most extensive accounts in the ledger are those for Philip Livingston (1716- 1878), who at the time was in business with his father, also Philip Livingston (1686 - 1749) trading slaves in the West Indies and Africa through their company Philip Livingston & Sons. The ledger records Philip Livingston's purchase of a slave on February 13, 1740 in Dutch: "Voor 1 neger gelevert (For 1 Negro delivered) 32 pounds" (p80). The ledger entries are recorded in Dutch until 1741; the entries recorded in English begin in 1744. Philip Livingston Sr. spent much time in New York City; he owned several ships used for privateering and the triangle … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cresswell, Thomas Estcourt
1747 - A "Load of Infamy" Cresswell, Thomas Estcourt [d.1788]. A Narrative of the Affair Between Mr. Cresswell, And Miss Sc--e, Address's to G--v--e Sc---e, Esq. By Which May be Discover'd the Falsities, Misrepresentations, &c. In a Letter in the General Evening-Post, October 31; Signed Lancelot Lee. London: Printed for Charles Green, [1747]. [iv], 78 pp. Octavo (7-1/2" x 4-1/2"). Stab-stitched pamphlet in later (?) marbled paper wrappers, small hand-lettered title label to front, light shelfwear. Toning and light foxing to title page and verso of final leaf, interior otherwise fresh. A well-preserved copy. * Only edition. This pamphlet offers a unique perspective on contemporary English law concerning breach of promise, bigamy, adultery. In it Cresswell defends himself against accusations of these transgressions, along with much else, by Gervase Scrope, the father of Elizabeth Scrope. "I thought myself under a necessity of publishing the following Sheets, in order to take off part of that Load of Infamy that has been laid upon me" (Preface). Mr. Scrope was right, however. A few years after entering into a clandestine marriage with Elizabeth Cresswell he married Anne Warneford in order to acquire her fortune. This scandal was one of the great events of the day. English Short-Title Catalogue T39569. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
