Willem Jacob 's Gravesande
London: Printed for W. Innys, T. Longman and T. Shewell, C. Hitch; And M, 1747. Quarto. Volume II only. Sixth and best edition. 389, [33]pp. (numerous errors in pagination following p. 369). Complete with 65 plates in rear (plates 63-127). Bound in modern leather, title page supplied in facsimile. Soiling to page 1 of text, marginal soiling to plates, occasional spotting. The "last and best edition" according to Babson and other authorities. In Vol. II there are chapters on fire (modeled on Boerhaave's ideas rather than Newton's), optics, and"The Physical Causes of the Celestial Motions. 's Gravesande was influential in propagating Isaac Newton's ideas in Continental Europe. "Mathematical Elements of Physics was easily the most influential book of its kind, at least before 1750. It was a larger, better-argued, and more philosophical work than most of its predecessors; moreover, it leaned heavily on [Newton's] 'Opticks' (including the queries) as well as on the 'Principia. ' One should therefore distinguish between? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ±? ? sGravesande? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ±? ? s roles as an exponent of Newtonian concepts (the rules of reasoning, the theory of gravitational attraction and its applications in celestial mechanics, theory of matter, theory of light, and so forth) and as an exponent of an empiricist methodology disdaining postulated hypotheses. (DSB) Babson, Newton, 69; BM 10: 1155 (860). Very Good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1747 - A New & Accurate Map of Negroland and the Adjacent Countries; also Upper Guinea, showing the principal European Settlements, &distinguishing wch. belong to England, Denmark, Holland &c The Sea Coast & some of the Rivers being Drawn from Surveys & the best modern Maps and Charts. & regulated by Astronl. Observn. by Eman. Bowen (West Africa) Issued London, c. 1747-50 by Emanuel Bowen (father of Thomas). Fascinating mid-18th century antique engraved map. Cartouche at bottom left sits atop distance scale given in English & French leagues. flanked by a number of figures, including an African tribesman holding a spear (right) and what appears to be a group of three Arab & local trading merchant men at left standing before an elephant. Viewed from a modern-historical context, the map features numerous outdated (and in some cases flagrantly racist) geographical curiosities, including: "Negroland" (featured in the title of the map itself); "Slave Coast"; "Gabou -- from whence they bring Jasper and Slaves"; etc. The Kingdom of Tombur at lower center is noted as the source of gold, ivory and good tin, the Kingdom of Gago being the original point for gold going to Morocco. The interior is filled with speculative, fanciful and outright imaginary interior features including lakes, rivers and mountains. These include mythical Kingdoms which are transliterationas of local dialect. Paper is gently uniformly toned and displays light surface age wear, offsetting, etc. A light old dampstain is seen running across the top of the map with a small split with tiny loss to blank margin above … [Click Below for Full Description]

1747 Duty of Man & Citizen Pufendorf Philosophy Free Will Natural Law Hobbes “the faculty which does dishtinguish men from brutes is called the will, by which man moves himself to Action, and chooses that which best pleases him; and rejects that which seems unfit for him.” Pufendorf, Duty of Man A rare 18th-century printing of “The Duty of Man and Citizen” by Samuel von Pufendorf. This book, originally published in 1673, is Pufendorf’s measure of the philosophical theories of Grotius and doctrines of Thomas Hobbes. He argued the point that natural law does not extend beyond the limits of life – while Hobbes declared that the state of nature was war, Pufendorf staunchly argued it to be in a state of peace, even if it is feeble and insecure. This seventh edition, like the editions preceding it, was translated by Jean Barbyarc.
