Erfurt: J. D. A first edition of popular German Robisonade, which was reprinted in the following years, in a decorative binding. - This is a first edition of Nil Hammelmanns’s travels, printed in Erfurt in 1747. The frontispiece shows four maps of imaginary island. Although the title mentions the book was allegedly translated from Dutch, is this probably an original German text. The second edition of the work was printed in the same year by the same publisher, and was followed by sequences in the following years. Robinsonade - The story of Robinson Crusoe was based on a real life experience by a sailor Alexander Selkirk, who was marooned on Juan Fernández Island (today Robinson Crusoe Island ) for over four years, between 1704-1709. Upon his return a book based on his life was published with a title Fame of having lived four Years and four Months alone on the Island of Juan Fernandez, which inspired Daniel Defoe (circa 1660-1731) to write The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having b … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mallet, David. (Malloch) (1705-1765) - Signed by Author.
1747. 16th - 19th Century Fine and Rare Books, Maps, Manuscripts, and Atlases Mallet, (Malloch) David. (1705-1765) AMYNTOR and THEODORA or The HERMIT A POEM In Three Cantos London 1747 FIRST EDITION SIGNED by Author Mallet, David. (Malloch) (1705-1765) Amyntor and Theodora: or the Hermit. A Poem in Three Cantos. Printed for Paul Vaillant, in the Strand. MDCCXLVII. FIRST EDITION SIGNED by the Author, "D. Mallet" and "Jas. Copley" in early brown ink on the front pastedown endpaper. Original quarter calf leather binding with marbled boards, half title page, and front and rear endpapers. The thick leaves are crisp and clean with minimal foxing ([4], viii, 92 pages). Amyntor and Theodora is a narrative poem in blank verse set on the island of St Kilda off the west coast of the Hebrides. Mallet owes, and freeley credits in the footnotes, his description of the island to Martin Martin, who had published his 'A Late Voyage to St Kilda' in 1698. Mallet was able to sell the poem to Vallant for £120 - considerably more than he had got for his 1728 poem 'The Excursion'. David Mallet was a Scottish dramatist. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh, and went to London in 1723 to work as a private tutor. There he became friendly with Alexander Pope, James Thomson, and other literary figures, including Lyttleton, Bolingbroke, and Chesterfield. His best-known work was written in the same year: William and Margaret, adapted from a traditional ballad. In 1740, he collaborated with Thomson on a masque, Alfred, which was the vehicle for "Rule, Britannia!". His other plays and poetry (e. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marrero, D. A.
1747. "Rare "Cubana"- Spanish take British ship Harrington, with ivory, sugar and timber-". Folio (210 x 300mm), 29 pages, string tied, written in very legible hand. Very good condition. AN ACCOUNT defending the management of the captured British Indiaman Harrington after its capture by a Spanish warship off Havana during the War of Jenkins' Ear (1739-1748). The crew was sent to Jamaica, the cargo of sugar, ivory, timber and other goods was sold off or used for the Spanish as thought appropriate and the ship itself was brought into Spanish service. A description of the capture of this ship is included in William Williams, The Journal of Llewellin Penrose, a seaman (London, J. Murray, 1815) a semi-autobiographical work which is considered by many as the first American novel. In it, the fictional author, Llewellin Penrose, had boarded the Harrington in 1746 on a voyage to Jamaica when it was seized by a Spanish 50-gun guarda costa, the Fuerte, and brought into Havana. He along with the rest of the crew was sent under a flag of truce to Jamaica. The War of Jenkins' Ear was largely a result of Spanish and British disagreements over the actions of Spanish guarda costas and British illicit trade in the Caribbean. It represented the first time that Spain and Britain went to war mainly over their respective positions in the Caribbean. The capture of the Harrington, its subsequent management by Spanish authorities and the resulting investigation is illustrative of the nature of the disagreement between the two countries. VITRUVIO - PARRAULT CLAUDE
In Venezia, nella stamperia di Giambattista Albrizzi, 1747. Cm. 17; pp. (44) 213 (31). Cfr. Iccu. Lozano, P.
[Madrid?], 1747. "Early Exploration of the Patagonia by Jesuit Priests. Authored by an Historian to the Jesuits". 56 pp. Modern vellum. FINE JESUITICA. First edition. An extremely rare relation written by the Chronicler of the Society of Jesus in Paraguay, addressed to Father Bruno Morales; it "describes José de Quiroga's expedition to the Patagonian coasts" (European Americana 747/105). The relation describes the expedition sent out by the Governor of the River Plate, Jose Andonaegui (1685 - 1761), in 1745, to the Patagonia; the group included the Jesuit Priests Jose Quiroga, Jose Cardiel, and Matias Strobel, on board the ship San Antonio, commanded by Joaquin Olivares y Centeno. Adonaegui was an unusually active Governor, who amongst other appointments, was in charge of conducting the Guarani's to Portuguese Jurisdiction, under the 1750 Treaty. The expedition aimed to expand the commercial frontiers of Buenos Aires and explore the riches of the vast Patagonian region, up to then virtually untouched. Under his auspices, the first expeditions south of Buenos Aires, only inhabited by hostile natives, took place, laying the ground for future settlements and interest. The expeditionarys reached Puerto Deseado in January 1746, and from there went further south, exploring the San Julian bay, the River Coig and other areas; they returned to Buenos Aires in April of the same year. Later, Father Cardiel would join Falkner in his mission to the Patagonia. The author, Pedro Lozano (1697 - 1752) was a Jesuit missionary and historian, heavily involved with the activities of the Jesuits … [Click Below for Full Description]

RARE FIRST EDITION OF THIS HIGHLY IMPORTANT WORK PRECEDING THE ACTUAL PUBLICATION AND PREPARATION OF SAMUEL JOHNSON'S GREAT DICTIONARY. THE GREATEST LEXICOGRAPHICAL ACHIEVEMENT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND A FEAT UNSURPASSED BY ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL UP TO THE PRESENT TIME. Although Johnson had at first been encouraged by Chesterfield's interest, generously allowing that he had "more knowledge than I expected," he later felt he had been neglected, complaining that he had brought the Dictionary "to the verge of publication, without one act of assistance, one word of encouragement, or one smile of favour" (Boswell, Life, I.262). Johnson, in undertaking the vast work of creating his dictionary, set out to perform singlehanded for the English language what the French Academy, a century before, had attempted for French. He hope to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alberti, Giuseppe Antonio.
1747. 8vo. VIII, 313, (1) pp. With 16 engr. plates and several printed diagrams in the text. Contemporary Italian limp boards. First edition of the frequently reprinted work on number theory (last republished in Florence in 1979), on which the engineer Giuseppe Antonio Alberti's (1715-68) fame rests. The only edition to contain the author's dedication to his friend Domenico Casaglia. "Operetta di qualche interesse, la quale oltre i giuochi numerici contiene ancora dilettevoli giuochi di prestigio" (Riccardi). "Contains arithmetical puzzles, tricks with cards and dice, problems relating to the theory of numbers, sleight of hand, etc." (Honeyman). "Giuseppe Alberti was born in Bologna and made his career as an architect and engineer of roads and canals. In the latter part of his life, he published several books on technical subjects ranging from applied mathematics to civil engineering to fireworks. This particular work on mathematical recreations was quite popular and remained in print for many years after the author's death. This is the type of book that mischievous uncles like to own. It contains a myriad of mathematical problems, tricks and amusements with which they can both entertain and torment their nephews and nieces while in the process teaching mathematical and manipulative skills. The volume starts out with examples of simple arithmetic problems that have unusual properties (such as all the digits of the answer being identical--see the multiplication example illustration). Problems are solved by proportionality operations--processes usually denoted by the terms ru … [Click Below for Full Description]

CAYLUS (Comte de)
A Ancône, chez Jean Chouard, 1747. (1bl), 118pp. Exemplaire modeste. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
