Alberti, Giuseppe Antonio.
1747. 8vo. VIII, 313, (1) pp. With 16 engr. plates and several printed diagrams in the text. Contemporary Italian limp boards. First edition of the frequently reprinted work on number theory (last republished in Florence in 1979), on which the engineer Giuseppe Antonio Alberti's (1715-68) fame rests. The only edition to contain the author's dedication to his friend Domenico Casaglia. "Operetta di qualche interesse, la quale oltre i giuochi numerici contiene ancora dilettevoli giuochi di prestigio" (Riccardi). "Contains arithmetical puzzles, tricks with cards and dice, problems relating to the theory of numbers, sleight of hand, etc." (Honeyman). "Giuseppe Alberti was born in Bologna and made his career as an architect and engineer of roads and canals. In the latter part of his life, he published several books on technical subjects ranging from applied mathematics to civil engineering to fireworks. This particular work on mathematical recreations was quite popular and remained in print for many years after the author's death. This is the type of book that mischievous uncles like to own. It contains a myriad of mathematical problems, tricks and amusements with which they can both entertain and torment their nephews and nieces while in the process teaching mathematical and manipulative skills. The volume starts out with examples of simple arithmetic problems that have unusual properties (such as all the digits of the answer being identical--see the multiplication example illustration). Problems are solved by proportionality operations--processes usually denoted by the terms ru … [Click Below for Full Description]

LA CONDAMINE, [Charles Marie] de.
London: Printed for E. Withers...and G. Woodfall, 1747. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of the first account by La Condamine of the famous expedition to Peru which "had as its goal the verification of Newton's hypothesis on the flattening of the terrestrial globe in the polar regions and, thereby, the resolution of the controversy regarding the form of the earth that was then dividing French scientists. Maupertuis, Clairaut, and Le Monnier went to Lapland to meadure several degrees of meridian at the arctic circle, while Fodin, Bouguier, and La Condamine were sent to Peru...in order to make the same measurement in the vicinity of the equator" (DSB). After nine years of work the three scientists left for home, travelling separately. La Condamine chose the longest and most dangerous route, the Amazon, making scientific observations and collecting specimens on the way. His journey resulted in a new map of the entire course of the Amazon. See Safier, N. Measuring the New World (2008), pp. 1-81.8vo, pp. xii, 108, folding engraved map of the Amazon. Half-title. Fielding, Henry]
M. Cooper, London 1747 - First edition. [ii], iv, [2, blank], 5-44 pp., with half-title and A4 blank. 8vo. The last of Fielding's political tracts, a response to an anti-ministerial pamphlet - An Apology for the Conduct of a Late Celebrated Second-Rate Minister - that posed as the apology of Thomas Winnington, a prominent Whig and member of the government. "Winnington" claims that he and every memember of the Walpole government were secret Jacobites, bent on persuing policies so destructive to England's health that the Hanoverians would be booted out and the Stuarts restored to the throne. Fielding's reply, which drips with anti-Catholic venom, is derided by Battestin as essentially hack work done to order by his friends and patrons in the government. There was even the suggestion in a pamphlet response entitled The Patriot Analized (1748), that the original Apology was itself a product of Fielding's pen, an elaborate set-up which enabled him to doubly profit from his Answer. A rare complete copy, with half-title and blank A4, of an uncommon work on the market. Cross III, p. 315. Provenance: Louis & Anne Marie Davidson (bookplate) Modern blue wrappers. Stab holes, a few paper flaws on half-title and advertisement, and small closed tears on half-title. In a custom quarter cloth and card folder [ii], iv, [2, blank], 5-44 pp., with half-title and A4 blank. 8vo [Attributes: First Edition]

Willem Jacob 's Gravesande
London: Printed for W. Innys, T. Longman and T. Shewell, C. Hitch; And M, 1747. Quarto. Volume II only. Sixth and best edition. 389, [33]pp. (numerous errors in pagination following p. 369). Complete with 65 plates in rear (plates 63-127). Bound in modern leather, title page supplied in facsimile. Soiling to page 1 of text, marginal soiling to plates, occasional spotting. The "last and best edition" according to Babson and other authorities. In Vol. II there are chapters on fire (modeled on Boerhaave's ideas rather than Newton's), optics, and"The Physical Causes of the Celestial Motions. 's Gravesande was influential in propagating Isaac Newton's ideas in Continental Europe. "Mathematical Elements of Physics was easily the most influential book of its kind, at least before 1750. It was a larger, better-argued, and more philosophical work than most of its predecessors; moreover, it leaned heavily on [Newton's] 'Opticks' (including the queries) as well as on the 'Principia. ' One should therefore distinguish between? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ±? ? sGravesande? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ±? ? s roles as an exponent of Newtonian concepts (the rules of reasoning, the theory of gravitational attraction and its applications in celestial mechanics, theory of matter, theory of light, and so forth) and as an exponent of an empiricist methodology disdaining postulated hypotheses. Observn. by Eman. Bowen (West Africa) Issued London, c. 1747-50 by Emanuel Bowen (father of Thomas). Fascinating mid-18th century antique engraved map. Cartouche at bottom left sits atop distance scale given in English & French leagues. flanked by a number of figures, including an African tribesman holding a spear (right) and what appears to be a group of three Arab & local trading merchant men at left standing before an elephant. Viewed from a modern-historical context, the map features numerous outdated (and in some cases flagrantly racist) geographical curiosities, including: "Negroland" (featured in the title of the map itself); "Slave Coast"; "Gabou -- from whence they bring Jasper and Slaves"; etc. The Kingdom of Tombur at lower center is noted as the source of gold, ivory and good tin, the Kingdom of Gago being the original point for gold going to Morocco. The interior is filled with speculative, fanciful and outright imaginary interior features including lakes, rivers and mountains. These include mythical Kingdoms which are transliterationas of local dialect. Paper is gently uniformly toned and displays light surface age wear, offsetting, etc. A light old dampstain is seen running across the top of the map with a small split with tiny loss to blank margin above … [Click Below for Full Description]
