Réflexions sur la cause générale des vents.Paris: David l'aîné, 1747.

First edition of this important work on atmospheric tides: "Alembert's treatise on winds contained the first general use of partial differential equations in mathematical physics, a technique later perfected by Euler." (Norman 34). <br/><br/> "In 1747 d'Alembert published two more important works, one of which, the <i>Réflexions sur la cause générale des vents</i>, won a prize from the Prussian Academy. In it appeared the first general use of partial differential equations in mathematical physics. Euler later perfected the techniques of using these equations. The pattern was to become a familiar one: d'Alembert, Daniel Bernoulli, or Clairaut would pioneer a technique, and Euler would take it far beyond their capacity to develop it. D'Alembert's treatise on winds was the only one of his works honored by a prize and, ironically, was later shown to be based on insufficient assumptions. D'Alembert assumed that wind patterns were the result of tidal effects on the atmosphere, and he relegated the influence of heat to a minor role, one that caused only local variations from the general circulation. Still, as a work on atmospheric tides it was successful, and Lagrange continued to praise d'Alembert's efforts many years later.<br/><br/> The text is in both French and Latin. The work was also published the same year in Berlin, but the German edition does not include the Latin text.. 4to (225 x 165 mm), pp [8] xxviii [1] 2-194, [1-3] 4-138 and two engraved folding plates. Contemporary polished French calf with richly gilt spine, with light wear to hinges, capitals with skillful leather restoration, fine and clean throughout. In all a very good copy

Summa S. Thomae Hodiernis Academiarum Moribus Accomodata, Sive Cursus TheologiaeAd usum Scholarum ThomisticarumIn Nineteen Volumes.

50 - Leodii - Apud Everardum Kints 1747 - A smart uniformly bound set of Billuart first edition theological works created to be used within Thomistic schools. Written in Latin. Featuring decorative head and tail pieces, coat of arms and illuminated capitals. Originally created byphilosopher and theologian in the tradition of scholasticism, Thomas Aquinas, his work is described as one of the classics of the history of philosophy and one of the most influential works of Western literature. It is intended as a manual for beginners in theology and a compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Church. It presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. Thomas was a theologian and a Scholastic philosopher. However, he never considered himself a philosopher, and criticised philosophers, whom he saw as pagans, for always falling short of the true and proper wisdom to be found in Christian revelation. With this in mind, Thomas did have respect for Aristotle, so much so that in the Summa, he often cites Aristotle simply as the Philosopher. Much of his work bears upon philosophical topics, and in this sense may be characterised as philosophical. Thomas's philosophical thought has exerted enormous influence on subsequent Christian theology, especially that of the Roman Catholic Church, extending to Western philosophy in general. Thomas stands as a vehicle and modifier of Aristotelianism and Neoplatonism. The Summa's topics follow a cycle: the existence of God; Creation, Man; Man's purpose; Christ; the Sacraments; and back to God. The Summa Theologica is meant to summarise the history of the cosmos and provide an outline for the meaning of life itself. Throughout the work, Aquinas cites not only Aristotle but Sacred Scripture, Augustine of Hippo, and other Jewish, Greek, Roman, Christian, and Muslim scholars. The Summa Theologi is a more structured and expanded version of Aquinas's earlier Summa contra Gentiles, each written for different purposes: the Summa Theologi to explain the Christian faith to theology students, and the Summa contra Gentiles to explain it and defend it in hostile situations. Complete in nineteen volumes. Condition: In the originalmottled calf bindings with marbled text block edge, and gilt design and lettering to the spines. Externally, all are sound with only light wear to the extremities and head of the spines. Volume one has slightwear encroachingonto the front board. Internally, all are generally firmly bound with volume's seventeen and ninebeing slightlystrained in places. Pages are extremely bright and clean given the age of the books, with only the very odd spot, and very slight age toning to page 449 of volume five. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.         1747 Emanuel Bowen Map of North American Harbors

London 1747 - Map. "Particular Draughts and Plans of Some of the Principal Towns and Harbours belonging to the English, French, and Spaniards; in America and West Indies. Collected from the best Authorities. By Eman. Bowen." London, 1747. 17 x 14 in. There are 13 maps on one sheet, the maps are of the harbors of; "Boston," "Placentia" (Eastern Coast of Canada), "Louis Bourg," "Annapolis Royal" (Canada), "New York and Perthamboy," "S'Augustine," "Providence," "Havana," "St. Jago de Cuba," "Charles Town," "Fort Royal in Martinico" (West Indies), "Cartegena," "Porto Bello." Historical BackgroundEmanuel Bowen (1693/4-1767) was a map maker and engraver in London. Bowen's career (1720-1767) was a prominent component of London's position as a leading producer of maps and atlases during the 18th century. He served as royal map maker both for George II of England and Louis XV of France. Bowen is known for many famed maps and atlases, including; The Royal English Atlas, the Large English Atlas which he produced in partnership with mapmaker Thomas Kitchen, and his earliest publication, the Britannia Depicta, produced in partnership with mapmaker John Owen (nicknamed the Owen and Bowen Maps). Bowen's maps were different from the rest of the maps created during his time, and were very popular. What set his maps apart from the others were the facts that they were created with some of the most sophisticated cartographical detail of the time, included historical and cultural information, were very artistically designed, and were some of the largest maps printed during the time. Bowen also created several geographical textbooks, including; The Complete System of Geography, and The Universal History of the World. The map featured here, the "Particular Draughts and Plans of Some of the Principal Towns and Harbours belonging to the English, French, and Spaniards; in America and West Indies. Collected from the best Authorities" shows detailed maps of the Harbors and Towns. The details include depth measurements of the waterways, labels and illustrations of towns and forts, illustrations of surrounding landscape, and interesting facts about the harbors. Such facts include a list of the number of Canons set up in different forts to defend the Louisbourg harbor entrance, and the historical fact, "Porto Bello,.taken by Admiral Vernon on Nov.r 22.d 1739 with 6 ships only." Another aspect of the map to note is that the lands of the harbors are documented before the landfills that occurred in many of them that altered the present day maps of the areas.References BOWEN Emanuel Bowen (1714-1767) Bowen Bowen

        19 autograph letters signed.

Vienna, St. Pölten, and other places, 1738-1747. - Altogether 37 pages on 38 leaves. Large 4to, with additional material (see below). To the Abbott of the Premonstratensians in Hradisko near Olomouc (Moravia). These unpublished letters, hitherto unknown to scholarship, represent a substantial part of Gran's correspondence with the Hradisch Abbey. They offer a detailed and intimate perspective on the creative process of this famed artist, who, together with Paul Troger and Franz Anton Maulbertsch, is regarded as one of the best-known painters of the later Austrian Baroque period. The letters are valuable sources for the dating of Gran's works at the Hradisko Monastery itself (frescoes and oil paintings); they also provide ample information about the circumstances of their composition. Lost works such as a cycle of paintings from 1747 are also mentioned. Finally, the letters offer a unique perspective on Gran's everyday life, including the illnesses from which he suffered and collaborations with fellow artists. The recipient, although never explicitly named, is Abbott Norbert II. Also enclosed is an additional letter to the Abbott from the painter Christian Hilfgott Brandt (1693-1756), dated and signed Vienna, 25 March 1754. - Margins with occasional tears and light creases, still an extremely well-preserved collection of correspondence. Manuscript material by Gran is extremely rare. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Les Principales Aventures de L'Incomparable Chevalier Errant Don Quichotte de la Manche.

Paris Jacques-François Chereau (c. 1747) - Large folio. (1), (25)ff., plates. A reissue or reimpression published after the artist, Charles-Antoine Coypel, was named "Premier Peintre du Roi" in 1747; this series of twenty-five engravings was first presented as a deluxe portfolio in Paris, in 1724. The engravings were done after a series of paintings illustrating scenes from Don Quixote that Coypel had designed for a popular set of tapestries, which were woven continuously between 1714 and 1794. Coypel supervised the portfolio's production, and, according to the title page, the engravings were done by "les plus habiles artistes en ce genre." These artists included L. Surugue, F. Joullain, C. N. Cochin, and eight other engravers, who sign the plates. Coypel's depictions of scenes from Don Quixote differed significantly from previous illustrations of Cervantes's classic in that they were less focused on humor, and were more courtly and sophisticated, taking into account the eighteenth-century French taste for the Fête Galante and romanticized depictions of aristocrats in baroque rural settings. The scenery of these illustrations is a much lusher Versailles, rather than arid La Mancha. In addition, Coypel's illustrations were never intended to accompany a text, but instead were meant to be admired as decorative pieces. Bound in nineteenth-century half dark blue morocco over marbled boards. The spine bears a crimson lettering piece with gilt lettering. Wear to corners and head and foot of spine, front hinge starting, covers rubbed in spots, some faint marginal foxing, else a very good copy. (Ashbee 22, p. 12). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In a half morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt. A unique and spectacular manuscript hymnbook created by the religious community at Ephrata, Pennsylvania, founded by Johann Conrad Beissel. This manuscript is from the period when the community was at its zenith, and is an outstanding example of the Frakturschriften for which the Ephrata Cloister is known. It contains over 250 pages of manuscript music, some of it likely original compositions. The printed register at the end contains 375 hymn listings, and an additional fifteen pieces of music precede the main body of the work. Johann Conrad Beissel (1692-1768) was born in Germany and orphaned at an early age. A charismatic and engaging personality, he tried on several religious movements, and eventually emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1720 after being banished from his homeland for radical religious beliefs. Beissel spent part of the 1720s with the Dunkards in Germantown and Lancaster County before his controversial beliefs about celibacy and Sabbath-keeping caused a rift with his fellow congregants. He then established himself as a hermit on the banks of the Cocalico River, where he was eventually joined by other like-minded individuals who wished to follow his teachings, and so founded the Ephrata Cloister in 1732. "What began as a hermitage for a small group of devoted individuals grew into a thriving community of nearly 80 celibate members supported by an estimated 200 family members from the region at its zenith in the mid-18th century. During that period much of the activity surrounded the charismatic founder and leader, Conrad Beissel. His theology, a hybrid of pietism and mysticism, encouraged celibacy, Sabbath worship, Anabaptism, and the ascetic life, yet provided room for families, limited industry, and creative expression" - Ephrata website. "Both within and without Ephrata, Beissel aroused controversy. His opposition to the institution of marriage early divided his congregation, as did his refusal to tolerate the community's money-making industries. His adoption of the Jewish sabbath and work on Sunday violated provincial laws and aroused the opposition of civil officials. That women left their husbands and homes to be with Beissel produced their husbands' ever-lasting hostility and even provoked one to attack Beissel physically. Beissel's willingness to permit women to spend nights in his cabin and his initial housing of men and women in the same building led to rumors of sexual promiscuity that prompted a neighbor to try to set fire to the cloister" - ANB. The community became known for its self-composed a cappella music, Germanic calligraphy known as Frakturschriften, and the complete publishing center which included a paper mill, printing office, and book bindery. Printing at Ephrata began in 1745, the third geographical location of printing in Pennsylvania. In fact, the largest book printed in America before 1800, numbering more than 1,500 pages, was published at the Ephrata printing shop in 1748. The first printed hymnbook of the cloister was called the "Turtle-Taube (Turtle Dove)," and contained more than 400 of the community's hymns, most of which Beissel had written. It was issued in 1747, the same year as this manuscript. In addition to the press, the Cloister also had a scriptorium which produced beautiful manuscript hymnals and other works. Beissel composed many original hymns for the community, which then produced manuscript volumes containing both the words and, separately, the music. He is said to have composed more than 4,000 lines of poetry, almost all of it religious, some of it set to music also of his composition. "For the community's worship, he
