Christianus VI. D.G. Rex Daniae et Norvegiae.

Kobberstik 1747. Bladstørrelse 58x39 cm. I "Damborgramme".. Pl. 98 Untitled pair of ducks

Published in London and printed by the College of Physicians in Warwick-Lane 1747 - A wonderfully detailed hand-colored ornithological engraving by George Edwards from his publication "A Natural History of Birds", which was published in London and printed by the College of Physicians in Warwick-Lane in 1747. Overall this print measures 9.5"x12". Overall this print is in good condition with some foxing/staining/creasing and tears along paper margins. It is our intention at Arader Gallery to always have the lowest price on this material. The English naturalist and ornithologist George Edwards (1694-1773), is remembered as the "Father of British Ornithology" for his dedication in the study and depiction of birds. Edwards was born in Essex, England and as a young man traveled throughout Northern Europe, collecting samples, studying natural history and making colored drawings of animals and birds. In 1743 he published the first volume of his Natural History of Uncommon Birds. His marvelous publication was a renowned reference text in mid-18th century British naturalist circles. He continued publishing subsequent volumes until 1764. His works contain engravings and descriptions from more than 600 natural history subjects which had not previously been recorded. Edwards was a good friend of Mark Catesby, who created the first American ornithology and of Sir Hans Sloane, the founder of the British Museum. Edwards produced his impressive volumes almost single-handed: making the drawings upon which the prints are based, writing the text, etching the plates and hand-coloring the pieces. Edwards was elected a Fellow and honored with the Gold Medal of the Royal Society and in 1733 he was appointed as Librarian at the Royal College of Physicians. Edwards bird prints are carefully colored and detailed with a naturalistic quality showing his great dedication to accuracy as well as desire to produce a beautiful image.

Réflexions sur la cause générale des vents.Paris: David l'aîné, 1747.

First edition of this important work on atmospheric tides: "Alembert's treatise on winds contained the first general use of partial differential equations in mathematical physics, a technique later perfected by Euler." (Norman 34). <br/><br/> "In 1747 d'Alembert published two more important works, one of which, the <i>Réflexions sur la cause générale des vents</i>, won a prize from the Prussian Academy. In it appeared the first general use of partial differential equations in mathematical physics. Euler later perfected the techniques of using these equations. The pattern was to become a familiar one: d'Alembert, Daniel Bernoulli, or Clairaut would pioneer a technique, and Euler would take it far beyond their capacity to develop it. D'Alembert's treatise on winds was the only one of his works honored by a prize and, ironically, was later shown to be based on insufficient assumptions. D'Alembert assumed that wind patterns were the result of tidal effects on the atmosphere, and he relegated the influence of heat to a minor role, one that caused only local variations from the general circulation. Still, as a work on atmospheric tides it was successful, and Lagrange continued to praise d'Alembert's efforts many years later.<br/><br/> The text is in both French and Latin. The work was also published the same year in Berlin, but the German edition does not include the Latin text.. 4to (225 x 165 mm), pp [8] xxviii [1] 2-194, [1-3] 4-138 and two engraved folding plates. Contemporary polished French calf with richly gilt spine, with light wear to hinges, capitals with skillful leather restoration, fine and clean throughout. In all a very good copy
