Copper Medal in commemoration of his 1740-1744 Circumnavigation and 1747 defeat of the French at Cap Finisterre

London: Thomas Pingo, 1747. Copper medal, 43.3 mm., with Anson crowned by Victory at right, on the reverse Victory on hippocamp, the names of Anson's officers around; CAMPHEL issue with 'B' faintly visible on 'H', about uncirculated, a few minor blemishes to the rims. Circumnavigation and victory. An excellent medal, commemorating Anson's circumnavigation and his 1747 victory at Cap Finisterre off the coast of Spain. The huge prize-money brought back after the capture of the Manila treasure galleon, followed by the magnificent defeat of the French navy, were achievements which spoke enormously to popular feeling.George Anson was one of the most successful British naval commanders of the eighteenth-century, famous for his notoriously difficult circumnavigation of the globe from 1740-1744 as commander of the Centurion. In 1739 he had been given command of a Pacific squadron to raid Spanish possessions, a period at sea which saw him lose five of his six ships and literally most of his crew, but also return with a staggering £400,000 in bounty after his capture of the Manila treasure galleon. 'After the fleet's failure off Toulon in February the navy stood in need of a popular triumph, and the capture of a treasure galleon was in the public mind the next best thing to a fleet victory. Day after day the newspapers carried reports of the homecoming: the procession from Portsmouth to London, with thirty-two wagons laden with treasure; the feting of Anson and his men; details of the prize money and the dispute over its allocation...' (Williams, p. 229). Anson went on to a long career and, as this medal also commemorates, was instrumental in the French defeat at Finisterre off the Spanish coast on 3 May 1747, where his thirteen ships of the line defeated the French admiral De la Jonquiere's smaller fleet in just three hours with most of the French men-of-war taken. This medal, to commemorate Anson's great successes, was commissioned from Thomas Pingo (1692-1776), then assistant engraver at the Royal Mint. On the obverse is a bust of the admiral crowned with a laurel by Victory and the caption 'Vict. Mai III MDCCXLVII'. The reverse bears the legend 'Circumnavigation' and the names of other officers on the famous journey, themselves famous names in the British navy: Keppel, Saumarez, Saunders, Brett, Dennis, and Campbel. When the medal was originally issued the name of the junior officer Campbel was mis-engraved "Camphel". The present medal is an example of the interim state of the medal, with the 'H' altered to a 'B', but not completely effaced. Eimer suggests that the medal was commissioned by Thomas Anson, George's brother and himself a collector of medals. In this light, it has plausibly been argued that the long-accepted date of production of 1747 is in fact far too early, and that it was not until 1768, six years after Anson's death, that this medal was commissioned and struck.

[MONTPELLIER UNIVERSITY AND BOTANICAL GARDEN STUDENT MANUSCRIPT]

Montpellier, [1747-1749]. Full Vellum. Very Good. 8vo(18.5 x 13.5 cm). Later limp vellum with vellum covered ties one of which is broken midway through text leaves and absent at back; Some staining on covers. Collation: [60]pp. Text are original student notes in Latin (mostly) and some pp. in French. The latter is for notes on vegetation from MACQUER, Pierre Joseph’s Elemens de Chymie Theorique pratique des v?g?taux, 1749. These notes on pp. [58-59] refer to sections in the first five chapters of Marquer’s book. The first four pages of the manuscript contain notes on medicine with dates of 1747 and 1749. The main body of the manuscript lists plants in the Botanical Garden divided into five major sections: Liliaceae (8pp.); Papilionaceae (13pp.); Umbelliferae (8pp); Caryophyllaceae (15pp.) Infundibuliformea (?) (7pp). There are two blank leaves before the last leaf with text on verso. This page, also in French is on geometry with one drawn image for illustrating a circle with internal triangle connected to external point by two lines. This page concerns derivation a proof for a proposition relating the surface of a sphere to a rectangle and diameter. The catalogue is probably made by a student of medicine as it is preceded by a text on respiration and by notes on a dissection of a woman, a lesson probably attended at the 'Académie de médicine' in Montpellier, dated 1747 and 1749. This was a significant period for the Jardin des Plantes in Montpellier as the garden was undergoing a major restoration by François Boissier between 1740-1758. The Botanic Garden in Montpellier, Jardin des Plantes, is one of the University’s treasures. The common history of University and Garden has linked them for over four centuries and also points to their common purpose, the safeguarding of all living things: the human being through medicine, the world of plants through the natural medical history. It is France's oldest botanical garden, inspired by the Orto botanico di Padova (1545) and in turn serving as model for the Jardin des Plantes de Paris (1626). In the Middle Ages Montpellier was a rich city due to its position between the sea and the mountains on one of the important trade routes. The speciadors sovereigns based their fortunes on the booming trade with the East. There were many doctors and pharmacists and the art of healing developed in the 12th century and in particular with the use of medicinal plants. A medical school was founded in 1220 for the specific purpose of training medical doctors, and it remains the oldest school to this day in the Western world. The Renaissance produced one of the foremost medical doctors and most learned naturalist, Guillaume Rondelet. In 1550 the Arrêt des Grands Jours de Béziers (Act of Parliament) put him in charge of the first structured botanic studies programme in France and entrusted him with the collection of plants in natura. The first garden, a hortulus, was established on his instructions at the Old School in the Cannau district. Montpellier became the capital of botanical sciences in the 16th and 17th centuries. Pierre Magnol befriended by John Ray was one of the great botanists of his age and revolutionized botanical science in his search for a natural classification system. The concept of “family” was developed by Michel Adanson, a student from Paris, and led directly to the numerical classifications of the 20th century. François Boissier was the Intendant of the garden from 1740 to 1758, replacing the royal intendant. He organised the second major restoration after Magnol and showed himself to be a gifted ‘gardener’. Several naturalists perfected their training and knowledge in Montpellier in the 18th century while the royal garden in Paris became increasingly prominent. Several famous botanists who worked at the botanical garden in Montpellier included Joseph Pitton de Tournefort, Phillibert Commerson and Bernard de Jussieu. (Wikipedia; Coimbra Group) The garden at Montpellier was modeled on existing Italian botanical gardens built near medical schools (as at Pisa and Padua) and has often been described as a replica of them. The program of education was comparably academic and similarly a product of the commercial culture around the Mediterranean that brought imported species of plants and books about medicine into circulation. Pedagogy in medical botany at Montpellier centered on plant demonstrations too… The use of live plants in these early medical gardens was designed to improve on the empirically limiting practice of using only dried herbs for pharmacology. Eine der schönsten Ausgabe einer Malerschule die wir je gesehen haben. Johann Daniel Preissler (1666, Nuremberg ?- 1737) was a notable member of a German artistic family, originating in Bohemia. His children included Johan Martin Preisler, Georg Martin Preisler and Johann Justin Preissler, all artists. Most notable for his portraits, nudes and history paintings, he also produced drawings and frescoes. He was also known beyond Nuremberg for his "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic" (full title: "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic oder Gründlich verfasste Reguln deren man sich als einer Anleitung zu berühmter Künstlere Zeichen-Wercke bestens bedienen kann"), a sequence of works on art-theory ?- the individual works were translated into several other languages and served as textbooks for students such as the Swiss Salomon Gessner right up until the 19th century. By the time of his death in 1737, Johann Caspar Füssli spoke of Preissler and Jan Kupecky as the two most famous Nuremberg artists of the early 18th century. He received his first artistic training in his home town under his father, the history painter and portraitist Daniel Preissler (1627?-1665), continuing his education in the studio of Johann Murrer. From 1688 to 1696 he stayed in Italy, including periods in Rome and Venice. In 1705 he became the director of Nuremberg's Academy of Fine Arts, which under his leadership turned into a city institution. In 1716 he founded the Zeichenschule (drawing school), open to "poor people's children" ?- it proved a great success. With 71 students entering in the first year, its intake was so large that in 1721 Preissler began producing the teaching materials which later became his "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic" ?- he had previously only published academic works, such as ones on anatomy. Preissler also wrote on the academically neglected topics such as ornament and flower-drawing (in 1725) and landscape drawing (1739), though throughout his writing he insisted that these were only beginners' lessons.         Le Cuisinier Gascon. Nouvelle Edition, A laquelle on a joint la Lettre du Patissier Anglois

Amsterdam (Paris) 1747 - Contemporary acid calf, respined. Light wear at the corners, scattered light foxing and toning internally, endpapers browned - a clean, bright copy overall. With an armorial bookplate on the front pastedown and the bookplate of food bibliographer Eleanor Lowenstein on the front free endpaper. The second edition, the first with the Lettre du Patissier Anglois. viii, 244. Oberle 112, Simon 421, Cagle 1082, Vicaire 234The most singular of all French cookbooks, the organization is haphazard, but the dishes and names so charming and so likably indicative of the debauched phase of French royal cookery (and society) that all is forgiven. Frogs in green sauce, green monkey sauce, eggs without malice, veal cooked to resemble donkey droppings, chicken in the shape of bats, ducks roasted and pressed for a bit of juice to dress a chicken and the carcasses discarded. Simultaneously mocking and exemplifying the unfettered fabulousness of 18th century royal cuisine, Le Cuisinier Gascon marks the end of the revolution in food that began with La Varenne, and the start of a revolution of another sort.         Christianus VI. D.G. Rex Daniae et Norvegiae.

Kobberstik 1747. Bladstørrelse 58x39 cm. I "Damborgramme"..
