[Click Below for Full Description]

CALMET, Dom Augustin
L'an du Monde 7746', [Paris, 1746]. First edition of Code de Cythère, a utopian system for the regulation of prostitution in Paris, proposing a system of highly organized houses in which female sex workers would be gathered and cared for. In a series of articles Moët sets out this utilitarian plan, dividing his subject into classes and orders and describing provisions for health, well-being, the care of infants born to them in the course of their work, and expected standards of dress and behaviour. He concludes with a detailed financial balance sheet. This early work on the subject cannot fail to have influenced Restif de la Bretonne, who adapts many of Moët's ideas in his influential Pornographe of 1769. Gay tells us that Moët was the son of the royal librarian at Versailles. The false 'Erotopolis' imprint probably disguises a French origin.Bound with the Code de Cythère is a rare roman galant also with a fale imprint, namely Le Frère questeur, probably a version of the earlier novel, Le Diable d'argent of 1707. pp. [8], lx, 81, [1], complete with half-title, typographical ornaments.[bound after:] Le Frère questeur. Histoire galante, ecrite par lui-même. 'À Londres' [?Paris], 1756, pp. 126.2 works bound together, 8vo (165 × 90 mm). Contemporary mottled sheep, gilt panelled spine, red morocco labels. Rubbed, head of spine slightly chipped, but very nice copies. Later etched bookplate of C[harles] de Mandre (1805-75). [Gay I, 606. OCLC] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Moffet (Thomas)
Printed for T. Osborne, 1746. minor staining to margins of title-page, portion torn from top of front fly-leaf, pp. xxxii, 398, 12mo, contemporary mottled calf, double gilt fillets on sides, cracks in joints and spine, corners slightly worn, good. Second edition (almost 100 years after the first, of 1655, posthumous), and quite scarce. 'This is a gossipy treatise on various aspects of diet and eating habits which Moffet intended to supplement by a similar work on drinks. It was probably compiled about 1595 and contains, inter alia, descriptions of an unusually wide range of birds and fish' (ODNB). 'Moffet was one of the first to recognise migration in birds and referred to woodcock and snipe "when they have rested themselves after their long flight from beyond the Seaes, and are fat"; he laso mentions cranes breeding in the fens, a practic ethat ceased shortly after Moffet's own time' (DSB). Moffett 'wrote at a time when the printed matter relating to the ornithology of this country was meagre in the extreme [which makes] his book, quaint and instructive as it is otherwise, of very considerable importance to the student of early British ornithology' (Mullens and Swann). The origins of the well-known nursery rhyme 'Little Miss Muffet' 'provides entertaining material for speculation' (I. and P. Opie, Dictionary). It is a curious fact that in this copy, where the 2 cracks in the spine correspond to places where the textblock has been strained (not broken), the second one occurs at the section 'Of Curds and Cheese', in the chapter 'Of Butter, Cream, Curds, Cheese, and Whey.' [1746].. Manuscript plan with original hand-colour, dissected and mounted on linen, profile of battlements, key to map below title. Deatailed plan of the Genoa's fortifications during the siege of 1746. The Siege of Genoa took place in 1746 during the War of the Austrian Succession when an Allied force of Austrians, Sardinians soldiers and British sailors besieged the capital of the Republic of Genoa. The city ultimately surrendered to commander Antoniotto Botta Adorno, after being abandoned by its principal allies France and Spain. The manner in which Austria had negotiated a separate surrender that didn't include Britain or Sardinia angered their allies, and for a while the British fleet under George Townshend were instructed by Arthur Villettes to continue their blockade of the city in protest until ordered to cease it by the Duke of Newcastle in London. Very rare first edition of this Spanish royal decree ruling horse breeding in Andalucia, Murcia, and Estremadura. Worldcat records no book form copy in America. First and last leaf with official royal stamp dated "Mil setencetos y quarenta y seis" (1746). The decree contains directives to the " conservation and increasing of number and quality of Spanish horse breeds". The pamphlet begins by giving a summarized historic account of the noble Iberian horse race, its qualities, and important uses to the nation. It then provides various procedures to increase the number of Spanish horse (Andalusian horse) and to maintain the race superior. According to the publication, their number was at the time diminishing and the breed getting degenerated. Author: King of Spain, Philip V Title: REAL DESPACHO DE S. MAG. First edition of the Insecten-Belustigung ("Insect Entertainment"), one of the outstanding entomological works of the eighteenth century. Having established himself as a talented engraver and miniature painter in Nuremberg, August Johann Rösel von Rosenhof (1705-1759) developed a reputation as a gifted naturalist as well with his Monatliche Insectenbelustigungen, the bi-monthly issue of an insect plate and explanatory text which would later be gathered into the present work. MARIUS (J.)
Paris, David.

TARGIONI TOZZETTI, Giovanni - MAGLIABECHI, Antonio.
Ex Typographia ad Insigne Apollinis in Platea, Florentiae, 1746. XLVIII, 391, [1] p., 8°(17 cm), piena pergamena con tassello in pelle con i titoli in oro al dorso. Buono, ordinari segni d'uso e del tempo. UNICO VOLUME PUBBLICATO. OPERA RARISSIMA.

Debure, 1746. Used. In 16°, p. pelle, pp. XXXVI + 500. Lettere e fregi ai d. in o. Nervi. Tagli rossi. Antichi forellini su poche pagine che interessano pochissime lettere. Raro.
