Swedish East India Company]
1746 - Stockholm, in der königl. Buchdruckerey, bey dem Directeur P. Momma, (1746). 4:o. (28) pp. Uncut and unopened in three and a half loose but folded sheets. Some foxing in the margins in parts, but a fine copy. When the first 15-year charter for a Swedish East India Company expired in 1746, several interest groups expressed their wishes to continue the trade. A commission with Samuel Åkerhielm and C. G. Tessin, among others, was set up to decide in the matter. After some debate, the direction of the earlier company, in coalition with the head of the Royal Board of Trade, Anders Plomgren, emerged with the victory, and this second charter, with a duration of 20 years, was confirmed on June 17 1746. The charter was printed in both Swedish, French and German. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Han blev organist vid St. Klara 1745 och 1763 hovorganist. Denna konsert vid födelsen av prins Gustav, den blivande Gustav III, är ett av de första främträdanden Johnsen gör i Sverige. Giandomenico TIEPOLO
Acquaforte, 1746-47 , in basso a sinistra "Joannes Batta Tiepolo inv. et pinx." in basso a destra "Jo. Il rame originale è conservato presso il Museo Correr, a Venezia Etching, 1746-47, inscribed bottom left "Joannes Batta Tiepolo inv. et pinx." and bottom right "Jo. Dominicus Filius del. et. fecit". Example of the first state, of three, before numbering. A very good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the platemark, n very good condition. This scene was printed on a sheet with another image, in an oval format too, in the all editions of Giandomenico’s Catalogo. Both are bas … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jan de Marre
Amsterdam: Adriaan Wor, en de Erve G. Onder de Linden, 1746. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Jan de Marre (1696-1763) was a commander of a Dutch East India Company ship. He first joined the company at the age of 13, and achieved the rank of commander in 1728. He retired from the Company in 1732, and moved on to a career of writing and of directing a theatre company, among other interests. This volume, in Dutch, remains in an intact original binding in good plus condition with near fine contents. The half leather binding features decorative gilt spine bands and leather corners over speckled paper boards with red-speckled page edges. The binding is sound and square with wear at the corners, abrasions to the rear board, and overall wear and some cracking to the spine. The contents are bright and surprisingly clean, with very mild toning and occasional light spotting confined to the page edges. There are two engraved title vignettes and one engraved portrait of the author. All in all an extremely nice copy of this scarce work.

LA MORLIÈRE, Charles Jacques Louis Auguste de la Rochette, Chevalier de
"Agra" (Paris): avec Privilege du Grand Mogol, 1746. Some spots, a few bumps but a very good copy.. Two volumes in one, octavo; in contemporary French mottled calf, spine gilt, crimson label. First edition: a popular and often reprinted satire on Parisian manners, set in the Indies, in a "fertile land now known to geographers despite being missed by Strabo and Ptolemy" ('une contrée fertile des grandes Indes, dont l'extrême exactitude de nos Géographes modernes, est parvenue, en dépit de Strabon & de Ptolomée?').La Morlière (1719-85), musketeer, member of the Order of Christ, and bon vivant, was famous for his lengthy involvement with French theatre, particularly through his links with Voltaire. Before he found his niche in the theatre, he wrote several rather licentious novels, in particular Angola, which was held up by contemporaries such as Édouard Thierry as 'le roman du siècle, le livre des jolis boudoirs, le manuel charmant de la conversation à la mode'. The setting for the novel in the Indies allows Morlière broad scope for satire, especially in his depiction of the just king Erzeb-can's marriage to Princesse Arsenide, darling of the world of luminous fairies on the 'côte gauche'. Most of the tale is devoted to the adventures of their child Prince Angola, who travels throughout the Indies and Arabia.

An Oak Spring flora 58, 92 etc. Magnificent illustration of a Callistephus chinensis, commonly known as China aster and annual aster, printed in colour and delicately finished by hand. This colourful flowering plant is native to China and Korea. It is originally part of a series of flower prints by Gerard van Spaendonck, the only engraved work published during his lifetime, "entitled Fleurs dessinées d'après Nature, which contains twenty-four magnificent drawings, brilliantly interpreted in stipple by P.F. Le Grand and other engravers. These are probably the finest engravings of flowers ever made" (Blunt) and "they are among the most breath-taking series of plates in the [Hunt] library" (Hunt). The series was originally published in 6 parts with 4 plates and available printed in black, printed in colour, or (as in the present case) printed in colour and finished by hand.Gerard van Spaendonck (1746-1822) singlehandedly transformed the genre of flower painting in France, where he managed to unite the realism of the Dutch school with the suave elegance of the French school. In 1780 he became Professeur de Peinture de Fleurs at the Jardin des Plantes. Among his many pupils was Pierre Joseph Redouté.Only a couple minor spots, some faint thumbing and the lower right corner damaged, otherwise in very good condition.

Maupertius, Pierre Louis, Moreau
S.E, 1746. Garrison & Morton 215.2. Quérard V 642

PESTALOZZI, Johann Heinrich.
1746. Israel, Pestalozzi Bibliogr. I, 45 1. First edition of the public account, rendered by the famous Swiss educational reformer Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827), of what happened during his presidency of the pedagogical institutions in Burgdorf and Yverdun. He had hoped that with time the results of his work would silence the disputes around it, but now that he is forced to wind up his school almost completely, he feels he must no longer keep silent and gives a full account of what had happened at these educational establishments. The book explains about the animosity between two of his most gifted pupils and co-workers, Schmid and Niederer, and the Niederer family's lawsuit against him. Pestalozzi was acquitted of all charges.Good copy, slightly foxed. [Attributes: First Edition]

SPAENDONCK, Gerard van.
Van Boven & Segal, Gerard & Cornelis van Spaendonck, pp. 178-184, no. 8; for the series: Blunt, pp. 175-176; Hunt 673 note; cf. An Oak Spring flora 58, 92 etc. Magnificent illustration of a branch of a Mespilus germanica, printed in colour and delicately finished by hand. This small fruit-bearing tree, commonly known as medlar, is native to southwest Asia and south eastern Europe. The series was originally published in 6 parts with 4 plates and available printed in black, printed in colour, or (as in the present case) printed in colour and finished by hand.Gerard van Spaendonck (1746-1822) was a proponent of the Dutch school of floral painting. He singlehandedly transformed the genre of flower painting in France, where he managed to unite the realism of the Dutch school with the suave elegance of the French school. In 1780 he became Professeur de Peinture de Fleurs at the Jardin des Plantes. Among his many pupils was Pierre Joseph Redouté. Some faint thumbing and a tiny stain, otherwise in very good condition.

Haarlem
The Haarlem' drawer , etcher and Hernhutterpreacher Johannes Swertner (1746-1813) was a nephew of Henricus Spilman, who as a matter of fact, also was a member of the Broedergemeente. One of Swertners'first etches dates from 1762 (he was only 15 then) en shows the stranded whale between Zandvoort en Wijk aan Zee, the same animal that was also drawn by Cornelis van Noorde, Vincent Jansz. Van de Vinne and H. Spilman. From 1763 there is a seies of 6 numbered etches, of which the first one is dated (13,5 x 21,5 cm): 1. De Zijlweg buyten Haarlem (also without Nr.1 and with at the top right: 'pl 45' 2. Buyte Haarlem, aan de Wagenweg 3. Aan het Suyder buyten Spaarne buyten Haarlem 4. Buyten Haarlem bij de Baan 5. Buyten Haarlem an 't Suyder buyten Spaarne (also without Nr.5 and with at the top right: 'pl 44' 6. Buyten Haarlem aan de Amsterdamse Vaart (also without Nr.6 and with at the top right: 'pl 41)' This series could very well be inspired by the seie Aangename Gezichten by Spilman and Van Noorde from 1761. The last topographical work of Haarlem by Swertner (he left the city in 1765) are two very nice etchings of the river Spaarne (ca. 23 x 37 cm) from 1764: Gezigt over het Spaarne bij de Brouwerij het Dubbelt Anker binnen Haarlem and Gesigt bij de Melkbrug over ‘t Spaarne binnen Haarlem. After these etching later there were optical views made in Augsburg. The work of Swertner is very rare. Catalogus Harlemia Illustrata:Cat.nr.s :632 – 640.
