The distinguished historian and bibliographer Don Guillermo Tovar de Teresa writes extensively of this work, but here we will quote only a small portion of what he says. Don Guillermo wrote that in his bibliography of works illuminating colonial Mexican art -- and these two large volumes also have much to say, not noted above, about architecture, arts, sculpture, etc.! => The volumes are from the famous press of the widow of José Bernardo de Hogal, the Baskerville of Mexico, and they retain all of the fine characteristics that are associated with the Hogal name, including handsome black and red title-pages, great typography (here in double-column format), and use of good quality paper. The author was general accountant of the Treasury's office of mercury accounting (the element was important in silver refining) and one of the most illustrious Cosmographers of New Spain. He wrote this treatise at the insistence of the viceroy, who was greatly pleased by it.

BORELLI (Fr. Bruno)

Euler lost sight in his right eye in 1735, and in his left eye in 1766. Nevertheless, aided by his phenomenal memory (and having practiced writing on a large slate when his sight was failing him), he continued to publish his results by dictating them. Ab 1739 besuchte er u.a. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

PESTALOZZI, Johann Heinrich.
Goedeke IV, I, 611, 6; cf. PMM 258. First edition of the collected works of the greatest reformer of education since Comenius, Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827), a Swiss by birth. His basic principle was that children should be educated, not trained like dogs. So the pupil came first, not the subject, and the "whole person" must be educated. The famous Humboldt introduced Pestalozzi's educational system into Germany and the next milestone in the history of education, Fröbel, started from Pestalozzi's views. Fröbel, the next great reformer, spent the years 1808 to 1810 tutoring three boys at Pestalozzi's Institute at Yverdun. The first volume contains a list of subscribers of about 50 pages, headed by the Czar of Russia, the Kings of Prussia, Bavaria and the Netherlands, and by the Queens of Würtemberg and Sweden. Apart from the title-pages of the collected edition, most works have also their own title-pages and all earlier prefaces are included as well.Very good uniform set, slightly foxed, especially the first volume, with some occasional stains. First volume recased, with new endpapers.

WAR OF THE AUSTRIAN SUCCESSION].
N.p., n.pr., 1746?. 4°, disbound. Caption title and four-line criblé initial on p. 1. In good to very good condition. 12 pp. *** First Edition in Portuguese, signed in print at the end 15 December 1746. The anonymous author describes the oppression inflicted by the Austrians after they captured Genoa in September 1746, including sacking the city and imposing fines so heavy that the city had to hand over money from the Bank of St. George, the city's leading financial institution. Trade was slowing to a trickle and travel was forbidden. The Austrian governor, Antoniotto Botta d'Adorno, was particularly harsh, probably because his family had been expelled from Genoa some years earlier. On 5 December 1746, Austrian soldiers moving a mortar down the street saw it sink into a huge hole, and when their leader tried to beat the Genoese bystanders into helping drag it out, the Genoese pelted the soldiers with rocks. In short order the Genoese commandeered weapons from the armory and fought a series of other skirmishes, driving the Austrians out of the city by 10 December (pp. 6-10). By the author's estimate, only 50 Genoese were killed or wounded; for the Austrians, he says, casualties topped 4,000. In 1745, Genoa had reluctantly entered the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748) on the side of France and Spain. The next year the city was besieged by Austrians, British, and Genoa's mortal enemies, the Sardinians. Abandoned by its allies, Genoa surrendered to the Austrians in September 1746, but December 1746 saw the great popular uprising described here. One of the main goals of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bon exemplaire. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
