Leaving the fort to the left, you cross a pretty large Esplanade, and by an easy descent you reach the summit of Cape Diamond..." "The convent of the Ursulines has suffered twice by fire, as well as the seminary.... They gild, they embroider, and in general are all employ'd." "Quebec is not regularly fortify'd, but they have been long at work to render it capable of a siege. The town, as it is, is naturally strong, the port is flanked by two bastions... [Zusammen mit] Nutzlicher Dusatz zu dem Leben Christi, von denen Vier letzen Dingen: Nemlich von dem Tod, Gericht, Holl, und Himmelreich

Mainz and Frankfurt: Johann Hoffners, 1746. Full Calf. Good. 740, 216 pp. With 77 copper plate engravings and a portion (about 25 percent) of a map of Jerusalem, showing the walls of the ancient city, Pilate's palace, the Garden of Gethsemane, etc. Two books bound together. The book is printed in a variety of differing type fonts which differentiate such things as the prayers for feast days from the narrative of Christ's life and lives of those in his circle. Full Brown calf with raised bands at spine and remnants of straps and clasps over real wooden boards. Boards professionally repaired. Leather heavily scuffed and rubbed, with considerable dryness, yet nonetheless fitting in this condition for work at hand. Early pages have margin losses. Heavily toned elsewhere, along with at times heavy soilage and wear. Overall still good. In a specially made slipcase with hand-made paper skin. (Slipcase doesn't cover all of boards, and this was deliberate choice because spine is thicker than opposite edge of volume.) The book is 8.5 by 7 inches and 3.5 inches thick.

Paris 1746 - Copper-engraved map, period hand-colouring in outline. Table at the bottom left. Mid-18th century French map of North and South America showing the latest Russian and English discoveries in the Arctic: one of the earliest depictions of the discoveries of Bering's second expedition. This decorative map by Le Rouge shows North and South America, with the discoveries of Charlevoix and Condamine added in Canada and the Amazon, respectively. Interestingly, it also shows Aleksei Chirikov's discoveries on the northwest coast during Bering's second expedition, as well as Middleton's Repulse Bay in the Arctic. Concerning the former, Wroth writes: "In 1746 the royal geographer, George Louis Le Rouge, brought out a map entitled L'Amerique, in the northwest corner of which is shown a portion of the 1741 routes of Chirikov and De L'Isle de la Croyere to and from the American coast, the earliest cartographical record, it seems from present knowledge, of the American discoveries of the second Bering expedition. This map antedates by six years the publication of the De L'Isle -Buache map . There is ground for belief that during his stay in Russia of twenty-one years J.N. Delisle sent to France through the French embassy copies of maps which passed through his hands as an employee and associate of the Academy of Science. Doubtless intended for the information of the French government, these would have become available to Le Rouge as royal geographer" (Wroth, Early Cartographer of the Pacific, p. 222). Since Wroth's essay, copies of the Le Rouge map have been found without the discoveries of Bering's second expedition, suggesting two issues of the map, with the second issue possibly issued at a date later than 1746 but retaining the original date in the cartouche. Wroth, Cartography of the Pacific , 92.

Bound volume of 7 pamphlets, 6 of which relate to the Courts Martial of Admirals Thomas Mathews and Richard Lestock; and one other

London: Various publishers, 1739 - 1746 - A good, single collection relating to the trials of Admiral Mathews and Lestock which resulted from their engagement with the French and Spanish fleet near Toulon, in February, 1744. "The battle was highly discreditable to the British fleet, and not very honorable to their opponents, but it is of the highest historical importance in the history of the navy. It marked the lowest pitch reached in discipline and fighting and efficiency by the fleet in the 18th century, and it had a very bad effect in confirming the pedantic system of tactics set up by the old Fighting Instructions . " - Encyclopedia Britannica (11th ed). To the puzzlement of many observors, Lestock, who was second in command and who kept his distance from the battle, was acquitted; while Mathews, who engaged the enemy (however confusedly) was censured and discharged from the service. 1. "The book is splendid in its spacious descriptions, its charming exotic plates, its implications for taxonomic history; and fascinating as an imposing piece of eighteenth-century bookmaking ..." (Hunt). In Stirpes novae (New herbs), Charles L'Héritier de Brutelle (1746-1800) describes a great number of new taxa, many of which grew in his own garden, the gardens of his friends and in the Jardin du Roi. He had ample means and engaged the young botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) to draw the majority of the plates. The two developed a close friendship and L'Héritier taught Redouté the basics of plant taxonomy and dissection. The friendship proved a determining factor in Redouté's career and enabled him to fully develop his extraordinary talents.Bookblock in good condition, with some light spotting.         Mes Souvenirs politiques.

      - Lisboa, na nova officina Sylviana, 1746.Period style brown tooled calf, spine gilt. With woodcut vignette on title-page. 48 pp.* First edition. - The Madura Mission was a bold attempt to establish an Indian Catholic Church that was relatively free of European cultural domination. It was founded by Robert de Nobili (1577-1656) in 1601, dependent on Goa province for men and material. Enmity and oppositions were growing strong in Portugal and in its colonies against the Jesuits. In 1773 Jesuits ceased to exist openly and officially in Madura mission and all over India. - Very rare. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

With 25 handcoloured engraved plates. 19th century half morocco, spines with gilt lines and lettering. A rare complete set of the most important and finest entomological German publication of the 18th century. Our copy comprises the rare supplement by Kleemann as well the even rarer second supplement by Schwarz published in 1793, of which only a few copies are known. Most bibliographies do not mention the Schwarz supplement. The work was published by Roesel and his son-in-law Kleemann, both lived in Bavaria, in Nürnberg, working as artists, and both were ardent students of local natural history./"Roesel, who studied at first with his father and then with his uncle Wilhelm, an animal painter in Merseburg, later became a pupil of the famous Preisler in Nuremberg. After living in Copenhagen from 1726 to 1728 he returned to Nuremberg for good, and there, besides painting portraits and drawings, he applied himself in particular to the study of nature. He collected insects, their eggs and larvae, studied the process of hatching, pupation, and emergence, and painted all this in a most meticulous way, as Kleemann tells us. His manuscripts, with 406 illustrations, are now in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich. Roesel also made the engravings of his drawings and, until his death in 1757, his 'loving and diligent spouse' contributed fine colouring to the prints" (Nissen. Bestiaries).//Our copy has the bookplate of Boisuval. J.B.A. Boisduval (1801-1879) 'was one of France's most revered lepidopterists (P. Gilbert p. 136).//The text was printed on thin paper and as in all copies, is prone to foxing. Our copy likewise has some foxing to the text. One leaf with small paper tear. The plates being printed on fine thick paper have no foxing and are in mint condition. A nice uniformly bound set.//Junk, Rara p. 159 (our copy has the same collation of plates); Nissen ZBI, 3466.
