This was his last operational command, as he asked to be relieved when the Admiralty refused to grant him the status of commander-in-chief. During the following year his named was removed from the list of flag officers as a result of the publication of a number of anonymous pamphlets highly critical of the Admiralty which, although he denied authorship, were known to have been written by him." -Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea, p. 911.         Die Welt im Feuer, Oder das Wahre Vergehen und Ende der Welt, Durch den letzten Sünd-Brand; Nebst 12 illuminierten Kupffern, deutlich vorgestellt von Jodoc. Leopold. Frisch, Ev. Pr. zu K. in S.

Sorau, bey Gottlob Hebold, Buchh.,1746.. Erste Ausgabe. 21x18 cm. 3 w. Bll., 8 Bll., 175 S., Kupfertafeln, 3 w. Bll. Halbpergamentband m. hs. (vermutlich später) Rückentitel. Deckel und Kanten beschabt. Innen sehr guter Zustand. Wenige vereinzelte kl. I. bewiesen wird.

Planiglobii Terrestris Mappemonde

Nuremberg 1746 - Homann Heirs; Planiglobii Terrestris Mappemonde; Nuremberg: 1746; Hand-colored copperplate engraving; 27 ½" x 31" framed Born in Kammlach in 1663, John Baptista Homann (1663-1724) was the founder of a family firm that became a virtual cartographic dynasty, dominating the German and international map market for a century. Homann founded his firm in 1702, and produced his first atlas in 1704. His legacy extended beyond his years, however, as his atlases continued to be published for thirty years following his death, and his descendants, under the name “Homann Heirs,”" continued to produce maps and atlases long after that. Along with Matthias Seutter, Homann was largely responsible for the German resurgence in the field of cartography, which had so long been dominated by Dutch firms centered in Amsterdam. Homann made his way not merely as an engraver and mapseller, but also served as the geographer to the Kaiser of the Holy Roman Empire beginning in 1715. He received commissions as an engraver from David Funck, and also lent his skill to such notables as Jacob von Sandrart and Heinrich Scherer for their publications. For his strides in cartography, Homann was eventually honored with membership in the Prussian Royal Academy of Science. This is an important map by one of the most significant eighteenth-century German mapmakers.

Octavo (8 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in full leather with decorative gilt and lettering to spine. From the library of George M Foster. 1st edition.Lorenzo Boturini Benaducci, born in Italy of noble parentage, studied in Milan and lived in Trieste and Vienna. He was a knight of the Holy Roman Empire. Forced to flee Austria because of the war with Spain, Boturini arrived in Spain via England and Portugal. In Madrid he met the Condesa de Santibáñez, oldest daughter of the Condesa de Moctezuma. The mother authorized him to collect a pension due her, as a descendant of the Aztec Emperor Moctezuma II, from the royal treasury in New Spain. Boturini went to New Spain in 1736, where he remained eight years. During those years he assembled a vast collection of paintings, maps, manuscripts and native codices. He copied more than 500 pre-Columbian inscriptions and made his own drawings of monuments and sculptures, and he investigated the history of the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe on the hill of Tepeyac. He traveled widely and on his travels brought together the largest collection of Mexican antiquities assembled to that time by a European. Not only did he intend to write the history of the Virgin of Guadalupe, but he also had plans to crown her image with a gold crown. For that purpose he sought donations from the bishops and from the public. This brought him to the attention of the colonial government, which was suspicious of the motives of a foreigner making this proposal. On June 2, 1743 after an investigation, the recently arrived viceroy, Pedro Cebrián y Agustín, had him imprisoned and impounded his collection. He was accused of entering New Spain without license from the Council of the Indies and of introducing papal documents without a royal permit. After eight months in prison, Boturini was sent to Spain. He fell into the hands of pirates, who eventually released him at Gibraltar. From there he traveled to Madrid, in miserable conditions. In Madrid he met Mariano Fernández de Echeverría y Veytia, another passionate collector of Indian antiquities. Fernández de Echeverría y Veytia offered Boturini a place to live and financial support, and got the Council of the Indies to reconsider his case. Boturini was absolved. The king named him royal chronicler of the Indies, ordered that his collection be returned to him, and extended an invitation for him to return to New Spain. Boturini, however, declined to return to New Spain, and his collection was never restored. It appears that he was granted recompense and a stipend to work on his projected history of the colony. In Madrid he wrote a history of ancient Mexico, unpublished at the time of his death in 1753. The library at the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe is named for him. The Boturini Collection was formed between 1735 and 1743, to serve as the basis of a projected Historia de América Septentrional. It consisted of many valuable documents, the majority of them of Indian provenance. Among these were hieroglyphic paintings that had belonged to Juan de Alva Ixtlilxochitl, a descendant of the rulers of Texcoco. Ixtlilxotchitl bequeathed these documents to Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora. The collection was confiscated by Viceroy Pedro Cebrián y Agustín at the time of Boturini's arrest in 1743. It was deposited in the office of the secretary of the viceroyalty. The documents were neglected there for years and suffered considerable pilferage. The subsequent viceroy, Juan Francisco de Güemes, 1st Count of Revillagigedo, granted the historian and antiquary Fernández de Echeverría y Veytia (Boturini's friend from Madrid) the paintings and documents he solicited for his own studies. On Fernández de Echeverría y Veytia's death, they passed to Antonio de León y Gama. He died in 1802, and the collection passed to his heirs. Shortly thereafter, 16 paintings were obtained by Alexander von Humboldt during his visit to Mexico in 1802-03. He published them in Vues des cordillères et monuments des peuples indigènes d'Amérique. The originals of these are now in the Berlin State Library. Part of the remainder of the collection may have passed to Father José Pichardo, an amateur antiquarian. Joseph Alexis Aubin, beginning in 1827 or shortly thereafter, obtained important parts of the collection from a variety of sources. He sold his collection to Eugène Goupil, who was of French and Mexican descent. This part of the collection passed by donation or purchase to the National Library in Paris, where it remains, under the name Aubin-Goupil Collection.George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.Condition:Lacks Foster's stamp or date of purchase. some damp stains to end papers, neat old marginalia in Spanish to back end paper, worm hole ant head and heal of spine going through spine, extremities bumped and rubbed, old owner's label to front paste down, 1" chip at back head hinge, and name to front end paper, scuffed else a good copy of a rare item.

A Letter to Martin Folkes, Esq; President of the Royal Society, Concerning the Rise and Progress of Astronomy amongst the Antients

London: Jacob Ilive, 1746 - George Costard (1710-1782) was educated at Wadham College, Oxford, where he became fellow and tutor. One of the earliest writers on the history of astronomy, his "Letter to Martin Folkes" was the first fruit of the research which eventually led to the publication in 1769 of his magnum opus on the history of astornomy. It was Costard's contention that accurate astronomy was a product of Greek genius, beginning with Thales, and owed little to either Egypt or Babylon. The present work is still worth consulting for the frequent references to and citations from the lesser-known Greek authors, as well as Hebrew and Arabic sources. The present copy has an interesting and varied provenance: in 1746 it was presented by the author ("Donum Auctoris") to Jacob Edgcumbe [sic] of Exeter College - possibly a scion of the Devon/Cornwall family headed by the Earl of Mount-Edgcumbe. In 1778 the book was bought for 2 shillings by the Rev. Philip Wren (1755-1829), of University College, Oxford, and the great grandson of Sir Christopher Wren. By the late 19th century, the books was owned by the marine engineer George Sloggett of Cardiff, Wales First edition. 8vo (8-1/2 x 4-1/4 inches). Illustrations. The Bellin map shows light off-setting overall, is cropped along lower left side (with loss only of the outer frame line), has a mended 1 inch tear to lower left edge (affecting design), and is traversed horizontally by a superfluous crease along the length of which there is some browning inconsistent with the agreeable appearance of the map elsewhere. 2,000.00 [Attributes: Soft Cover]

He communicated to the Royal Society on 10 May 1750 a preparatory paper entitled ‘Remarks upon the solar and the lunar years’ and made most of the necessary calculations, and his speech in the House of Lords on 18 March 1751, on the second reading of the Bill for Regulating the Commencement of the Year, was printed by general request. Lord Chesterfield wrote of him as the virtual author of the bill . Macclesfield’s action in the matter was in some quarters unpopular. When his eldest son, Lord Parker, contested Oxfordshire in 1754, one of the cries of the crowd was, "Give us back the eleven days we have been robbed of"’ (ODNB).St. Isidore’s College in Rome was founded in 1625 by the Irish priest Luke Wadding (b. 1588). Its original purpose was the training of missionary friars to keep faith alive at home, but it became a haven for Irish nationalist exiles, and a centre for learning, culture and missionary activity known throughout Europe. According to ESTC the second two works are very rare outside the UK - the Costard is in Gottingen and California (two copies) only, with the Parker in just the Huntington and Kansas.         Tractatus de libertate creata sub divina scientia, voluntate et omnipotentia : Funiculus triplex, Divi Thomae praemotione, Scotico comitante decreto, et scientia media contextus. Discordia concors / Caduceatore authoreque sapientissimo P. Mathia Blanco

Mexici [México] : Typis Viduae Josiphi Bernardi de Hogal 1746 - ~ An outstanding contribution of the Mexican Jesuit Matías Blanco (1660?-1734) to settle the controversy between the Jesuits, the Dominicans and the Franciscans, about the relationship between divine foreknowledge and human free will. The long-lasting quarrel forced Pope Clement VIII, at the end of the 16th century, to set up the "De auxiliis" commission in Rome to calm down the often too virulent disputes. Blanco, viewing himself as a peace-maker (caduceatore), submitted his own solution, hoping it would be acceptable to all. While the philosophical issue of the reconciliation between grace and free will is still alive today, Blanco's thesis shows an astonishing modernity and is considered by recent criticism as an impressive piece of logical thought.
