"When this capital of New France shall be as flourishing as that of the old... what a prospect will this afford of towns, castles, villas!" "The fort is a handsome building with two wings... Leaving the fort to the left, you cross a pretty large Esplanade, and by an easy descent you reach the summit of Cape Diamond..." "The convent of the Ursulines has suffered twice by fire, as well as the seminary.... They gild, they embroider, and in general are all employ'd." "Quebec is not regularly fortify'd, but they have been long at work to render it capable of a siege. The town, as it is, is naturally strong, the port is flanked by two bastions... " "... the number of people does not exceed 7000: But amongst these you find a select Beau Monde, whose conversation is desirable." "... Hunting is much used, several gentlemen having no other resource." "In New England, and other parts of the British Empire in America, there reigns indeed a wealth, which the possessors seem not to know the use of. First and only edition of a sumptuous botanical work and Redouté's first publication: of the 91 hand-coloured plates 54 are after drawings by the young Redouté, then not yet 25 years old. "The book is splendid in its spacious descriptions, its charming exotic plates, its implications for taxonomic history; and fascinating as an imposing piece of eighteenth-century bookmaking ..." (Hunt). In Stirpes novae (New herbs), Charles L'Héritier de Brutelle (1746-1800) describes a great number of new taxa, many of which grew in his own garden, the gardens of his friends and in the Jardin du Roi. He had ample means and engaged the young botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) to draw the majority of the plates. The two developed a close friendship and L'Héritier taught Redouté the basics of plant taxonomy and dissection. The friendship proved a determining factor in Redouté's career and enabled him to fully develop his extraordinary talents.Bookblock in good condition, with some light spotting. The binding badly worn, with the headbands and the boards damaged.

Beiträge zur Natur- und Insecten-Geschichte Zweiter Theil. Nürnberg, auf Kosten der Raspeschen Handlung, 1793. 4to. With 25 handcoloured engraved plates. 19th century half morocco, spines with gilt lines and lettering. A rare complete set of the most important and finest entomological German publication of the 18th century. Our copy comprises the rare supplement by Kleemann as well the even rarer second supplement by Schwarz published in 1793, of which only a few copies are known. Most bibliographies do not mention the Schwarz supplement. The work was published by Roesel and his son-in-law Kleemann, both lived in Bavaria, in Nürnberg, working as artists, and both were ardent students of local natural history./"Roesel, who studied at first with his father and then with his uncle Wilhelm, an animal painter in Merseburg, later became a pupil of the famous Preisler in Nuremberg. After living in Copenhagen from 1726 to 1728 he returned to Nuremberg for good, and there, besides painting portraits and drawings, he applied himself in particular to the study of nature. He collected insects, their eggs and larvae, studied the process of hatching, pupation, and emergence, and painted all this in a most meticulous way, as Kleemann tells us. His manuscripts, with 406 illustrations, are now in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich. Roesel also made the engravings of his drawings and, until his death in 1757, his 'loving and diligent spouse' contributed fine colouring to the prints" (Nissen. Bestiaries).//Our copy has the bookplate of Boisuval. J.B.A. Boisduval (1801-1879) 'was one of France's most revered lepidopterists (P. Gilbert p. 136).//The text was printed on thin paper and as in all copies, is prone to foxing. Our copy likewise has some foxing to the text. One leaf with small paper tear. The plates being printed on fine thick paper have no foxing and are in mint condition. A nice uniformly bound set.//Junk, Rara p. 159 (our copy has the same collation of plates); Nissen ZBI, 3466.

Despeza que fez v. Sr. D. Jozé de Menezes com seu cazamento na jornada a Viena, joyas, e concerto da caza, e os dias da sua chegada." Manuscript on paper, in Portuguese.

, , @Signed at Lisbon, 23 January 1746. - Written in ink, in a large, legible hand. 8 leaves, with 9 pp. of text. Folio (36 x 24.9 cm.), stitched; outside blanks (somewhat soiled) serve as wrappers. First (blank) leaf detached; internally fine. Overall in very good condition. ---- Records the expenses incurred by D. José de Menezes during his trip to Vienna in 1743 to marry D. Luiza Gonzaga, Countess of Rappach. Travel expenses are listed as well as expenditures for a portrait of himself and (among other items) for diamonds, furniture, cloth, tailors, silverware, plates and chocolate. The entries vary in quality; some include names of sellers. The sellers are more likely agents and middlemen than the actual purveyors of the products; on p. 8 are mentioned Avram and David Fernandes Nunes in Holland, almost surely exiled Portuguese Jews. The document is signed at the end by D. Diogo de Menezes y Tavora and Francisco de Mello. The Menezes family had close ties with Austria. D. José's father, D. Diogo de Menezes e Tavora (Morgado de Valada na Ordem de Christo, Alcaide mor de Silves, Veador da Casa da Rainha D. Maria Anna and her Estribeiro mor) married an Austrian lady-in-waiting of D. João V's queen, D. Maria Anna of Austria. D. José was the second child and eldest son, born in 1713. When he returned to Portugal after his wedding, his wife became a lady-in-waiting to the queen.---- On the Menezes family, see Sousa, @História genealógica da casa real portuguesa XI, 138-41. "The Vénus Physique of 1745 was an enlarged and more fully analyzed argument against the then-dominant biological theory of the preformation of the embryo. Maupertuis argued convincingly that the embryo could not be preformed, either in the egg or in the animalcule (spermatozoon), since hereditary characteristics could be passed down equally through the male or the female parent" (D.S.B.).         Die Welt im Feuer, Oder das Wahre Vergehen und Ende der Welt, Durch den letzten Sünd-Brand; Nebst 12 illuminierten Kupffern, deutlich vorgestellt von Jodoc. Leopold. Frisch, Ev. Pr. zu K. in S.

Sorau, bey Gottlob Hebold, Buchh.,1746.. Erste Ausgabe. 21x18 cm. 3 w. Bll., 8 Bll., 175 S., Kupfertafeln, 3 w. Bll. Halbpergamentband m. hs. (vermutlich später) Rückentitel. Deckel und Kanten beschabt. Innen sehr guter Zustand. Wenige vereinzelte kl. I. bewiesen wird.
