Essai sur l'origine des connoissances humaines. (Essay on the Origin of Human Understanding).

Pierre Mortier, Amsterdam 1746 - Two volumes in one: Half title + TP + v-xxx + [1]-265 + half title + TP + [1]-292 + 1 blank leaf, 12mo. First Edition (Tchemerzine III, p. 474).First Edition of Condillac's First Book - First Issue with the "Fautes a Corriger" on page xxiv. The first edition of Condillac's first book, preceded only by an anonymously published journal essay. Condillac was a philosopher of the Enlightenment, psychologist, economist and educator. Through his work he helped bring about the dominance of the ideas of Locke and Newton over the philosophy of Descartes. His reputation as a philosopher, together with his writings (renowned for precision, clarity and simplicity) won him membership in the Royal Academy of Berlin in 1752 and in the French Academy in 1768. Condillac's writings fall into three categories: the philosophical, the educational and the economic. His systematization, exposition and development of Locke's philosophy, together with his appreciation of Newton's empiricism, constitute four books: Essai sur l'origine des connoissances humaines (1746), Traité des Sistêmes (1749), Traité des sensations (1754) and Traité des Animaux (1755). As noted, Condillac was much taken with the writings of John Locke and other British philosophers and he attacked the so-called "geometrical systems" espoused by Descartes et al. as useless for developing real knowledge of the world. In general, Condillac was an enemy of the synthetic, deductive method of Continental philosophy while championing the analytic, inductive methods of his British brethren. His teachings remained the basis of French philosophy until the counter-revolution and the triumph of Kant.In this work, Condillac first sounds the themes that would occupy his working life - the means by which an object acting on our physical senses can become the stuff of memory, judgement and understanding. This book is generally considered to be the foundation of French empiricism. Contemporary full leather. Top of spine expertly repaired with five bands and gilt on red morocco label. Overall, a lovely copy of an important work Continental philosophy. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Manuscript order addressed to Captain Philip Saumarez

At sea, 1746. Hand-written note signed by Anson, laid paper 160 x 205 mm., old folds; very good. Original order given by George Anson to his close associate from the Centurion circumnavigation of 17411-44, Philip Saumarez. Saumarez had been first lieutenant on Anson's flagship, and as acting commander saved the ship during the storm at Tinian when Anson was ashore. After the capture of the Manila galleon Anson paid Saumarez the great compliment of giving him command of the prize, to sail her to China for sale. Saumarez's original records of the Anson voyage, now in the National Library of Australia, were used as the basis of the 1973 publication Log of the Centurion. This order, regarding Anson's cruise against the French on HMS Yarmouth in 1746, is addressed to Saumarez in command of HMS Nottingham, giving a detailed description of what signals Saumarez should display in the event of him giving chase. The order is signed in a strong hand "G. Anson".Anson had returned from his famous circumnavigation in June 1744, and joined the board of the Admiralty in 1745. In July 1746, as vice-admiral of the Blue, he took command of the Channel Fleet, hoisting his flag on board Yarmouth on 9 August. Although the fleet was short-handed, Anson was able to set out to sea the same month, cruising off Ushant in the hope of intercepting the French. Anson soon transferred from Yarmouth to the Prince George, and both vessels would play an important part in the 1747 battle of Cape Finisterre, where the French fleet was decisively beaten.Saumarez had been appointed to the Nottingham in September 1746. In the note Anson gives his fellow captain a command relating to the chase of any French ship: "If at any time in Chasing you discover the Chase to be an Enemy, and I should not take notice of your Signal as in that case directed, you are to make the Signal for seeing a Fleet, provided the Chase is of a superior Force to your self. Given under my hand on board His Maj. Ship Yarmouth at Sea, the 11th of Decem. 1746". The connection between the two naval officers is particularly poignant as Saumarez played an important part at Cape Finisterre but was killed later the same year in action with Admiral Edward Hawke.

Reliure en pleine basane blonde lisse d'époque.

Full Sheepskin vintage blonde. Back tooled raised. Tail wheels. Part of title in red morocco. A small loss in mind. 3 corners bumped with loss of leather. Light to work on the right margin of the first leaf becomes a simple hole to the whole work. Pretty good copy. The first book that stands the thought of Condillac relies heavily on the mentor of the author: Locke. Already Abbe Condillac rejects any spiritual cause and blames all idealist philosophies (Leibniz, Descartes ...), but it is not yet the leader Sensualism, it does assert that much later. His style is already clear, precise and logical, going straight to the point by inductions. Condillac throws in the first work bases and principles that underpin his thinking future.Ex-libris Maurice Privat.

Lisbon, Off. da Congregacão do Oratorio (volume III: Regia Off. Sylviana), 1735?1746 @1735. - Woodcut headpieces, tailpieces and initials. Engraved vignette and initial signed by Debrie in volume III. (14 ll.), 468 pp.; (6 ll.), 479 pp.; (12 ll.), 451 pp. 2 works in 4 volumes. 4°, early twentieth-century mottled tobacco sheep, spines gilt, contrasting burgundy and crimson morocco labels (very slight wear, a few insignificant pinpoint wormholes in spines), marbled endleaves, edges sprinkled red. A fine set. 2 works in 4 volumes. ---- FIRST COLLECTED EDITION of Vieira's letters; only a few scattered letters had previously been published. Volumes I and II appeared in 1735. Volume III, published by the Regia Officina Sylviana in 1746 and dedicated to D. Thomás de Almeida, Cardinal-Archbishop and first Patriarch of Lisbon, is rare. The three volumes contain a total of 482 letters, many of them with Brazilian interest. In volume III, for example, a letter to Secretary of State Pedro Vieira de Sylva (dated 14 Dec. 1655) includes "Informação sobre o modo, com que forão tomados, e sentenciados por cativos os Indios do anno de 1655"; "Resposta, que deu o Padre Antonio Vieira ao Senado da Camara do Pará sobre o resgate dos Indios do Certão"; "Representação, que fez o Padre Antonio Vieira ao Senado da Camara do Pará"; and "Petição que fez o Padre Antonio Vieira ao Governador D. Pedro de Mello," all of which occupy pp. 17-100. Volume II, pp. 12-45 contain a lengthy report to the King (dated at Maranhão, 11 Feb. 1660) on the missions in Brazil: where the Jesuits have been working, their relations with the Indians, Dutch activities, and so on.Aside from the Braziliana, there are other fascinating subjects, such as an evaluation of the political and economic consequences of various proposed marriages for D. Pedro II's daughter, the Princess D. Isabel (III, 253-63).Vieira (1608-1697) is described by Boxer as "certainly the most remarkable man in the seventeenth-century Luso-Brazilian world" (@A Great Luso-Brazilian Figure: Padre António Vieira, S.J., p. 4). Born in Lisbon, he moved to Bahia as a child and there became a Jesuit novice in 1623. By 1635, when he was ordained, he was already famous as a preacher, and when the Dutch withdrew from Brazil it was he who was chosen to preach the victory sermon. Vieira, a trusted advisor of D. João IV, was sent by him on diplomatic missions to France, Holland and Rome. Beginning in 1652 he spent nine years as a missionary in Maranhão, where he vehemently defended the rights of the Indians against the colonists who wanted to enslave them. As a result, the colonists managed to have him and all the other Jesuits in Pará and Maranhão deported in 1661. Back in Lisbon, his campaign for toleration of the New Christians (crypto-Jews) and his Sebastianist beliefs led to his trial by the Inquisition?he was found guilty, but the ascension of the future D. Pedro II as regent in 1668 led to his release. Vieira?s status as a diplomat and missionary would guarantee his letters a place in Portuguese history, but his style and content are also exceptional: his letters and state-papers are invaluable sources for the period, and his sermons are as readable today as they were in the seventeenth century. Pessoa dubbed him "O Imperador da lingua portuguesa" (quoted in Boxer, @ibid., p. 3).The first two volumes were edited by the Conde de Ericeira and the Oratorian P. António dos Reis. Volume III was compiled by the Franciscan P. Francisco António Monteiro.Guilherme Francisco Lourenço Debrie, who signed an engraved vignette and initial in volume III, was one of the most skilled and most prolific engravers in Portugal under D. Vol 1 : manques sur les coiffes, les deux pièces de titre ; usures marquées sur les coins des plats ainsi que pour le tome 2..

- (36 ll.), 312 pp. 8°, stiff vellum (some soiling). Top margin closely trimmed, without touching text. Overall in very good condition. Gilt supralibros of Sir Charles Stuart, Lord Stuart d'Rothesay on both covers. ---- Second Spanish edition of Huet's @Le grand tesor historique, Rouen, 1714; the first Spanish edition appeared in Madrid, 1717, and a third was printed in 1793. The preliminary leaves include substantial discussions of Spanish commerce by Francisco de la Torre y Ocón, a member of the Council of the Indies (preliminary leaves 5@r-9@v) and by the translator (preliminary leaves 22@v-33@v). More importantly, there is a long section by Jerónimo de Uztáriz, the leading mercantilist author of Philip V's reign and one of the most noted Spanish economists of the eighteenth century. This section was written in 1717, before his @Teórica y práctica de comercio y de marina was published in Madrid, 1724. The first edition of the @Teórica was suppressed, and it did not appear again until 1742, just before this translation of Huet was published. (On Uztáriz, see Colmeiro 381 and Carpenter, @Economic Bestsellers before 1850, XI.)The @Comercio is an important work on European trade and commerce, on the origins and causes of Dutch commercial power, and on the East India Company. Chapter 15 deals with the Company's trade in America, including Brazil (pp. 252-7). Later sections cover Dutch commerce in Japan, China, India, Ceylon, Persia, Siam (pp. 276-9) and Africa (including Benin, Carombo, Congo and Angola; see pp. 260-1 on the slave trade).@Provenance: Charles Stuart, 1st Baron Stuart de Rothesay of the Isle of Bute (1779?1845; title created 1828), known as Sir Charles Stuart between 1812 and 1828, was a British diplomat. The super-libris is one of three that he used. He was the son of Lieutenant-General the Honourable Sir Charles Crichton-Stuart, younger son of Prime Minister John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute. His mother was Louisa, daughter of Lord Vere Bertie, younger son of Robert Bertie, 1st Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven. Sir Charles Stuart was twice Ambassador to France (1815-1824 and 1828-1830), and also served as Ambassador to Russia between 1841 and 1844. It was he who negotiated Portuguese recognition of Brazilian Independence. He was also charged by D. Pedro I, Emperor of Brazil, and author of Portugal's second constitution, the @Carta constitucional, with bringing that crucial document in Portuguese history from Brazil to Portugal. Stuart held the titles of 1.º Marquez de Angra, and 1.º Conde de Machico in the Portuguese peerage. He was envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary of Great Britain to Portugal (1810-1814), and served as a member of the Portuguese government during the Peninsular War. A keen bibliophile, his library, sold at auction in 1856, consisted of 4,323 lots, including many of the principal works of Peninsular history and literature, as well as numerous manuscripts. There is also a library catalogue privately printed in Paris in 1821 in a very restricted number of copies.---- Alden & Landis 746/91. Palau 106632: without collation.         Broadside. Begins: The standard of weights and measures in the Exchequer. Anno 12.o Henrici Septimi

Londini: sumptibus Societ. Antiquariae Folio extra (65 x 49 mm; 25.5" x 19.125"). [1] p.. 1746 [really, ca. 1850?] A most curious object this! — the cataloguer at Oxford University describes it as an "Engr[aved] facs[imile]," while the imprint information in the lower right corner says it was printed in London in 1746. Well now, it certainly is engraved, no doubt about that, but it is hard to believe that an original document dating from "anno. 12.o Henrici Septimi" (i.e., 1497/1498) looked like anything like this "facsimile." It is also beyond belief that this broadside was printed in 1746: The paper is wove, not laid. Perhaps there really is or was such a document as this purports to be copied from that was "formerly in the Treasury of the Kings Exchequer at Westminster, and [is] preserved in the M.S. Library of the late Earl of Oxford." In any case the large broadside in hand is a handsome production, presenting in multicolumn format, in gothic-like script, information about English weights and measures of the late Middle Ages and illustrated with 16th-century-like images of various sorts including barrels, weights, a pillory, a counting house, etc. => Some portions of the engraved illustrations hand-colored. => To our eye, this is an English Victorian reimagining of a medieval document. Not in ESTC. The cataloguers at Oxford and the Wellcome do not offer suggestions in their records that it is a 19th-century printing, and searches of WorldCat and COPAC locate only those two just-mentioned copies. Fold tears and age-toning at the sole fold at the midpoint of sheet; light waterstains in lower margin and a small square piece of right margin torn away, these latter obscurable in framing if that is desired. Adhered at the four corners to a black foamcore board. => Very good, very interesting, and very attractive.

      T. Osborne 1744-, London 1746 - Eight volumes, quarto, signs of wear at head and foot of spines; contemporary speckled calf with red and black spine labels, gilt decorated. Ambitious early publishing project of Samuel Johnson. A most handsome set of this important collection of manuscripts and pamphlets from the library of Robert Harley, first Earl of Oxford, edited by a young Samuel Johnson, father of the English Dictionary. Johnson was originally employed by the publisher to catalogue Harley's impressive library which became a foundation collection of the British Museum Library. This publication arose from the necessity (recognised by Johnson) to publish Harley's extensive ephemeral collection in a more lasting and accessible form. The volumes contain fascinating 17th century social and literary commentary-pious and impious, indispensable to students and collectors of the period. This publication arose from the necessity (recognised by Johnson) to publish Harley's extensive ephemeral collection in a more lasting and accessible form. The volumes contain fascinating 17th century social and literary commentary-pious and impious, indispensable to students and collectors of the period. The first edition of volumes 2-8, the second of volume 1.

        Manuscript order book

1746?-56. Small folio (320 x 200 mm). Original vellum (probably Admiralty issue) with title in ink on front cover ("Order Book 30th April 1746"). Housed in a flat back cloth box. Brown ink manuscript, 88 leaves written on both sides in various clear secretarial hands. The covers a bit soiled and darkened, inner hinges loose, but internally in very good condition. John Byron (1723?-1786), known as "Foulweather Jack", had been midshipman on the store ship Wager, part of Anson's squadron bound for the Pacific. Shipwrecked on the southern coast of Chile, he made his way to Valparaíso and returned to Europe by a French ship, arriving back in England in February 1746. This order book documents his naval career for the decade following that early misadventure, comprising transcripts of the orders, signals, and other official communications received by Byron and sent by him in the course of his various commands during the years 1746?-56. During his absence Byron had been promoted lieutenant; immediately on his return to England in 1746 he was made commander, and at year's end he was made captain. "After the peace Byron commanded the St Albans, one of the squadron patrolling the coast of Guinea; in 1753 he commanded the guard ship Augusta at Plymouth; and in 1755 the Vanguard" (ODNB). The orders for the St Albans include several mentions of actions at Cape Coast Castle which was then the capital of the British possessions on the Gold Coast and was later badly damaged by the French in the Seven Years' War. The final order in the book is dated 27 January 1756. "In 1764 Byron was sent out on a voyage of discovery, during the course of which he circumnavigated the globe [and was able to] claim the Falkland Islands for Britain and set a record of twenty-two months for a circumnavigation" (Howgego B200). Eighteenth century captain's order books like this one are exceedingly rare, especially ones maintained by famous circumnavigators like Byron, for whom Captain Cook named Cape Byron. The poet Byron was his grandson.
