Tractatus de libertate creata sub divina scientia, voluntate, et omnipotentia. Funiculus triplex, divi Thomae praemontione, Scotico comitante decreto, et scientia media contestus. Discordia concors

Mexici: Typis viduae Josephi Bernardi de Hogal 8vo. [22] ff., 359, [1 (blank)] pp., [8] ff.. 1746 Sole published work, and posthumous at that, of this Jesuit who was born in Durango in 1660, entered the Society of Jesus in 1679, and rose to be the chairholder of theology in the College of St. Peter and St. Paul; he died in 1734. The manuscript that he left of this work on free will, determinism, and liberty conceptualized in terms of Duns Scotus and Thomas Aquinas was in Spanish and in this printed edition is in the Neo-Latin translation of the Capuchin Miguel Buenaventura de Luna. => The work comes from the press of one of Mexico's famous woman printers, the widow of Hogal. Searches of WorldCat, NUC Pre-1956, COPAC, and the Catálogo Colectivo del Patrimonio Bibliográfico find only three copies in U.S. libraries, one in a Spanish library, and none in U.K. libraries. Searches of the OPACs of the Spanish and Mexican national libraries found no copies at the BNE and multiple copies at the BNM. Contemporary limp vellum, front hinge (inside) open but text block still attached at rear; small areas of the foremargins of a very few leaves have minor worm tracks, removed from text. Occasional pale tan stain appearing, e.g., to title-page and some upper or lower margins; generally a clean and very nice copy.

        Dell?utilità dei conduttori elettrici

Engraved title vignette, head - piece, initial, and 1 folding engraved plate. Original wrappers, top of front wrapper torn away; minor spotting on preliminary and endleaves, otherwise an excellent unsophisticated copy preserved in a folding clamshell box. First edition of the author?s fascinating treatise on lightning rods. Landriani treats not only practical matters of construction and use, but also incorporates a section on scientific theory, differentiating between natural and artificial electricity. He provides a detailed description of Franklin?s experiments, and includes a catalogue of all known lightning rods installed in Europe. Landriani (1746 - 1815), physicist and inventor, was one of a small group of eighteenth - century Italian scientists who received government funds to travel for the purpose of investigating scientific advances in other countries. A number of letters from scientists such as Saussure and Toaldo, among others, are published here for the first time. Along with Fontana, Landriani also developed the science of eudiometry, a method of verifying the healthiness of the air.

A library on Arabian horse breeding, including Stud Books and General Reference. From the Le Vivier and Marcia Parkinson Collections, with Additions from the Library of Duke Maximilian in Bavaria.

. The largest collection of its kind in private hands. 250 works in more than 1,000 volumes. Mostly original or first editions. Published in Austin, Cairo, Chicago, Hildesheim, London, Marburg, Moscow, New York, Philadelphia, Riga, Tehran, Warsaw and other places in the years 1746 to 2007.. Amassed over the last fifty years and covering four centuries of relevant material, the present collection spans all aspects of the history and development of the breeding of Arabian horses. It comprises within itself many books from the Le Vivier collection: fine press books of racing and thoroughbred literature produced by Eugene Connett's famous Derrydale press, as well as numerous important items from the library of Duke Maximilian in Bavaria (1808-88), himself a great enthusiast of Arabic horses. Including items of exceptional rarity, such as the rare, beautifully illustrated first German edition of Friedrich von Eisenberg's famous riding school (1747), which lauds Arabian horses as "the finest produced by the Orient". Also, we here find the early Arabian Horse Registry of America Stud Books, and many items also bear presentation inscriptions from the authors (Carl Raswan, Gladys Brown Edwards, etc.). The common practice in such a specialized field, most of the publications here were issued for a very limited circulation in runs of 1,000 or fewer individually-numbered copies. - As a reference library for breeding the collection is unparalleled: almost any Arabian horse's forefathers will be found amongst the exhaustive stud books and breeding serials from the 18th to the 20th century, from Australia, Poland, Spain, Russia, the USA, etc., often with accompanying photographs. Perhaps the most famous reference work is the Raswan Index, of which only 380 copies were printed (and many destroyed by a flood). Raswan became an expert on the Arabian breed through his lengthy trips to the desert, where he lived with the Bedouins and learned their language and customs. Several scarce early 20th century works also testify to the Western fascination with the Bedouin and desert roots of the Arabian horse: Homer Davenport's 'My Quest of the Arabian Horse' (1909) and Raswan's 'The Black Tents of Arabia: My Life Amongst the Bedouins' (1935). - Alongside modern surveys of the key centres of horse-breeding in the Arab world, the early Western classics are also found here in their scarce first editions. French and German authors are also well-represented, including the text and first French translation of the 'Hilyat al-fursan wa-shi'ar ash-shuj'an', an abridgement of Ibn Hudhail's horse treatise, prepared around 1400. Finally, the owner's collection of notable catalogues and magazines paints a fascinating composite picture of the evolution, and heyday, of Arabian horse-breeding in the Arab world, Poland, America, and the United Kingdom. - Also contained in this magnificent collection are the classic reference works on Arabian and Anglo-Arabian racehorses and their breeding. These standard works and encompassing sets of specialised thoroughbred literature include not only the indispensable guides to horse pedigrees, the Racing Calendar, General Stud Book, Spanish, American and Australian Stud Books, Bloodstock Breeders' Review, and Prior's Register of Thoroughbred Stallions, in near-complete runs stretching back as far as the 18th century, but also British and international horseracing history, and several volumes of exquisite coloured plates. - The size and comprehensiveness of the present collection cannot be overstated; it is safe to say that it represents the largest private collection of its kind which has come up for sale in recent decades. Many of the items found here can be located in just a handful of public institutions worldwide. Such items come into the market so rarely (and have recently, like the Raswan Index and the AHRA Stud Books, commanded prices of five figures) that it would be impossible to build a comparable collection item-by-item; the volumes here represent a lifetime of serious dedication to the task. Yet the value of such a collection lies not simply in its impressive number of important publications, but in the vast amount of practical knowledge contained within. As the introduction to one manual expresses it, "The horses shown and described form the foundation ancestry of a major number of breeding programs being propagated today. They appear in every area of endeavour. Yet pictures and facts are not easy to obtain. A knowledge of what has been and is, what proved successful and what endured, is pertinent to the maintenance of type and quality in the Arabian. Whatever your chosen bloodline this is a worthy study." - Illustrated catalogue available upon request.

"When this capital of New France shall be as flourishing as that of the old... what a prospect will this afford of towns, castles, villas!" "The fort is a handsome building with two wings... Leaving the fort to the left, you cross a pretty large Esplanade, and by an easy descent you reach the summit of Cape Diamond..." "The convent of the Ursulines has suffered twice by fire, as well as the seminary.... They gild, they embroider, and in general are all employ'd." "Quebec is not regularly fortify'd, but they have been long at work to render it capable of a siege. The town, as it is, is naturally strong, the port is flanked by two bastions... " "... the number of people does not exceed 7000: But amongst these you find a select Beau Monde, whose conversation is desirable." "... Hunting is much used, several gentlemen having no other resource." "In New England, and other parts of the British Empire in America, there reigns indeed a wealth, which the possessors seem not to know the use of. In New France there is a poverty conceal'd by an air of ease and content which seems natural. Commerce, and the improvement of their plantations strengthen the English."

Mainz and Frankfurt: Johann Hoffners, 1746. Full Calf. Good. 740, 216 pp. With 77 copper plate engravings and a portion (about 25 percent) of a map of Jerusalem, showing the walls of the ancient city, Pilate's palace, the Garden of Gethsemane, etc. Two books bound together. The book is printed in a variety of differing type fonts which differentiate such things as the prayers for feast days from the narrative of Christ's life and lives of those in his circle. Full Brown calf with raised bands at spine and remnants of straps and clasps over real wooden boards. Boards professionally repaired. Leather heavily scuffed and rubbed, with considerable dryness, yet nonetheless fitting in this condition for work at hand. Early pages have margin losses. Heavily toned elsewhere, along with at times heavy soilage and wear. Overall still good. In a specially made slipcase with hand-made paper skin. (Slipcase doesn't cover all of boards, and this was deliberate choice because spine is thicker than opposite edge of volume.) The book is 8.5 by 7 inches and 3.5 inches thick.

Israel, Pestalozzi Bibliogr. I, 45 1. First edition of the public account, rendered by the famous Swiss educational reformer Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827), of what happened during his presidency of the pedagogical institutions in Burgdorf and Yverdun. The book explains about the animosity between two of his most gifted pupils and co-workers, Schmid and Niederer, and the Niederer family's lawsuit against him.         Bound volume of 7 pamphlets, 6 of which relate to the Courts Martial of Admirals Thomas Mathews and Richard Lestock; and one other

London: Various publishers, 1739 - 1746 - A good, single collection relating to the trials of Admiral Mathews and Lestock which resulted from their engagement with the French and Spanish fleet near Toulon, in February, 1744. "The battle was highly discreditable to the British fleet, and not very honorable to their opponents, but it is of the highest historical importance in the history of the navy. It marked the lowest pitch reached in discipline and fighting and efficiency by the fleet in the 18th century, and it had a very bad effect in confirming the pedantic system of tactics set up by the old Fighting Instructions . " - Encyclopedia Britannica (11th ed). To the puzzlement of many observors, Lestock, who was second in command and who kept his distance from the battle, was acquitted; while Mathews, who engaged the enemy (however confusedly) was censured and discharged from the service. 1. [Corbett, Thomas]. An account of the expedition of the British fleet to Sicily, in the years 1718, 1719 and 1720. Under the command of Sir George Byng, Bart. . Collected from the Admiral's manuscripts, and other original papers. With folding table. For J. and R. tonson, 1739. Third edition. Lacking final leaf (pp. 95-96). Sir George Byng, the naval hero, was the father of Admiral John Byng, who presided over the cout martial of Lestock, and was himself court-martialed and executed a few years later. 2. [Mathews, Thomas]. Authentick letters from Admiral Mathews to the Sec--t----s of st-- te, the L----ds of the Ad------ty, &c. Relating to his expedition to the Mediterranean, with their answers . "The book is splendid in its spacious descriptions, its charming exotic plates, its implications for taxonomic history; and fascinating as an imposing piece of eighteenth-century bookmaking ..." (Hunt). In Stirpes novae (New herbs), Charles L'Héritier de Brutelle (1746-1800) describes a great number of new taxa, many of which grew in his own garden, the gardens of his friends and in the Jardin du Roi. He had ample means and engaged the young botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) to draw the majority of the plates. The two developed a close friendship and L'Héritier taught Redouté the basics of plant taxonomy and dissection. The friendship proved a determining factor in Redouté's career and enabled him to fully develop his extraordinary talents.Bookblock in good condition, with some light spotting. The binding badly worn, with the headbands and the boards damaged.
