A Letter to Martin Folkes, Esq; President of the Royal Society, Concerning the Rise and Progress of Astronomy amongst the Antients

London: Jacob Ilive 1746 London: Jacob Ilive, 1746. First edition. 8vo (8-1/2 x 4-1/4 inches). Illustrations. [i-ii], 158, [2] pp. Contemporary marbled boards rebacked with 19th-century ribbed cloth, preserving original red morocco spine label, extremities scuffed and rounded. Houseau-L. 650; Lalande 429 ("C'est le commencement des savantes recherches de l'auteur, qui ont produit son Histoire de l'astronomie en 1769") . George Costard (1710-1782) was educated at Wadham College, Oxford, where he became fellow and tutor. One of the earliest writers on the history of astronomy, his "Letter to Martin Folkes" was the first fruit of the research which eventually led to the publication in 1769 of his magnum opus on the history of astornomy. It was Costard's contention that accurate astronomy was a product of Greek genius, beginning with Thales, and owed little to either Egypt or Babylon. The present work is still worth consulting for the frequent references to and citations from the lesser-known Greek authors, as well as Hebrew and Arabic sources. The present copy has an interesting and varied provenance: in 1746 it was presented by the author ("Donum Auctoris") to Jacob Edgcumbe [sic] of Exeter College - possibly a scion of the Devon/Cornwall family headed by the Earl of Mount-Edgcumbe. In 1778 the book was bought for 2 shillings by the Rev. Philip Wren (1755-1829), of University College, Oxford, and the great grandson of Sir Christopher Wren. By the late 19th century, the books was owned by the marine engineer George Sloggett of Cardiff, Wales

With their Characters engraved under each Print, extracted from Lord Clarendon. Taken from Original Pictures of the greatest Masters, many of them Sir Anthony Vandyke's, and all the Heads accurately engraved by Mr Geo. Vertue...

London: Printed and Published according to Act of Parliament, for C. Davis; S. Austen; and W. H. Toms, 1746.. First edition, large folio, [2], 2pp., without the list of subscribers, engraved frontispiece and 10 engraved plates with a total of 26 portraits of royalists, letter-press title and preface, some minor spotting and light browning but overall the plates are very clean and bright, expertly rebound in cont. style calf calf, marbled boards, red morocco spine label, an attractive copy.Rare: ESTC locates only three copy in the UK (all at Oxford) and four copies in North America. A reason for the scarcity of the complete volume may be found in a note on the title page, which advises that: "As these Prints are an agreeable Ornament for Rooms, they may be had of the Proprietors in neat black Frames and Glasses". Vertue's parents had served in the court of the exiled James II, and the publication of this volume in praise of loyal servants to the Stuart crown in the year of Culloden may well suggest Jacobite sympathies. This may be signalled by couplet from Pope quoted in the frontispiece: "Rich Industry Sat Smiling on the Plain | And Peace, and Plenty, told a Stuart's reign."
