SIRIS: A CHAIN OF PHILOSOPHICAL REFLECTIONS AND INQUIRIES CONCERNING THE VIRTUES OF TAR WATER, AND DIVERSE OTHER SUBJECTS CONNECTED TOGETHER AND ARISING ONE FROM ANOTHER ... A NEW EDITION ... Dublin Printed, London Re- printed: For W. Innys, and C. Hitch ..., 1744 [bound with:] Prior, Thomas: AN AUTHENTIC NARRATIVE OF THE SUCCESS OF TAR-WATER, IN CURING A GREAT NUMBER AND VARIETY OF DISTEMPERS; WITH REMARKS , AND OCCASIONAL PAPERS RELATIVE TO THE SUBJECT. TO WHICH ARE SUBJOINED TWO LETTERS FROM THE AUTHOR OF SIRIS, SHEWING THE MEDICINAL PROPERTIES OF TAR-WATER, AND THE BEST MANNER OF MAKING IT

Dublin Printed, London Re-printed: For W. Innys, C. Hitch, and M. Cooper ... 1746.. 174,[2]; [4],[5]-88pp. Octavo. Modern half-calf and marbled boards. Faint blindstamp and ink shelf number (the latter on verso of title) of The Library of the Society for the Home Study of Holy Scripture and Church History, first title leaf a trace foxed, otherwise a very good copy. New (i.e. Third London) edition of the first title, Keynes's variant A1b with "A Letter to T.P. ..." on the verso of the title. This copy has p. 160 misnumbered '610'. The second title is also a "New Edition" (i.e. the second London edition), and exhibits Keynes's second (corrected) state of the title leaf: 'Holbourn'. Berkeley first noticed the use of tar-infused water during his residence in America, and although cautious in his initial conclusions, he soon became an advocate of its use as an economical aid for the betterment of the health of the Irish people. Although by no means wanting in exposition of Berkeley's larger philosophical considerations, the practical aspects of SIRIS led to its being his most popular work, and the investigation of tar-water generated a significant body of pamphlet literature in response (well delineated by Keynes), among which Prior's work is one of the most significant. ESTC cites Bowyer's ledger in reporting the edition of the first title consisted of 1000 copies and that of the second title 2000 copies. KEYNES (BERKELEY) 68 & 104. ESTC T45794 & T125698.

A Letter to Martin Folkes, Esq; President of the Royal Society, Concerning the Rise and Progress of Astronomy amongst the Antients

London: Jacob Ilive, 1746. First edition. 8vo (8-1/2 x 4-1/4 inches). Illustrations. [i-ii], 158, [2] pp. Contemporary marbled boards rebacked with 19th-century ribbed cloth, preserving original red morocco spine label, extremities scuffed and rounded. Houseau-L. 650; Lalande 429 ("C'est le commencement des savantes recherches de l'auteur, qui ont produit son Histoire de l'astronomie en 1769") . George Costard (1710-1782) was educated at Wadham College, Oxford, where he became fellow and tutor. One of the earliest writers on the history of astronomy, his "Letter to Martin Folkes" was the first fruit of the research which eventually led to the publication in 1769 of his magnum opus on the history of astornomy. It was Costard's contention that accurate astronomy was a product of Greek genius, beginning with Thales, and owed little to either Egypt or Babylon. The present work is still worth consulting for the frequent references to and citations from the lesser-known Greek authors, as well as Hebrew and Arabic sources. The present copy has an interesting and varied provenance: in 1746 it was presented by the author ("Donum Auctoris") to Jacob Edgcumbe [sic] of Exeter College - possibly a scion of the Devon/Cornwall family headed by the Earl of Mount-Edgcumbe. In 1778 the book was bought for 2 shillings by the Rev. Philip Wren (1755-1829), of University College, Oxford, and the great grandson of Sir Christopher Wren. By the late 19th century, the books was owned by the marine engineer George Sloggett of Cardiff, Wales

The Botanical Magazine; Or Flower-Garden Displayed? Volume VI

8vo, early leather spine & tips, with marbeled boards, illustrated with 36 colored plates. Spine and extremities extremely worn, hinges weak, some foxing and aging to plates, but plates generally in very good condition. William Curtis (1746-1799) was trained as an apothecary, but his real interest was in botany. His first major contribution to this science was his Flora Londinensis published in 1777. While a highly regarded work, it turned out to be a financial disappointment to Curtis. He then turned his attention to gardeners, who he felt could pay better for his efforts (Sitwell). In 1787 he published the first, of his enormously popular periodical, The Botanical Magazine. It was the first of its kind, and is often considered the greatest of this type of periodicals, and has continued publication down to the present day. William Kiburn, James Sowerby, and Sydenham T. Edwards were the principal artists who worked on the illustrations with Curtis for 28 years, and it is they who did most of the plates. When Curtis died in 1799 his friend John Sims took over publishing the magazine. The present volume is from the first series, and contains 36 color plates.

Poor Richard, 1747. An Almanack For the Year of Christ 1747 ... By Richard Saunders, Philom

Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by B. Franklin, [November 1746]. 12mo. (6 7/8 x 3 15/16 inches). 24pp. Woodcut illustration of an anatomical man on p. 3, woodcut illustrations of eclipses on p. 18 and p. 19. Stitched self- wrappers, first leaf detached. Housed in a red cloth chemise and red morocco backed slipcase. Very rare early issue of Poor Richard's Almanack, written and published by Benjamin Franklin. All issues of Poor Richard's Almanack prior to 1758 - Franklin's last year as author - are rare. However, issues prior to his partnership with David Hall in 1748 are particularly uncommon and desirable. The present issue for 1747, advertised for sale in the November 6, 1746 issue of the Pennsylvania Gazette, is a wonderful example of the genre, with Franklin's plentiful wit and wisdom evident throughout. In the preface to this issue, Franklin, writing under the pseudonym Richard Saunders, writes: "This is the 15th Time I have entertaind thee with my annual Productions; I hope to thy Profit as well as mine. For besides the astronomical Calculations, and other Things usually containd in Almanacks, which have their daily Use indeed while the Year continues, but then become of no Value, I have constantly interspersd moral Sentences, prudent Maxims, and wise Sayings, many of them containing much good Sense in very few Words, and therefore apt to leave strong and lasting Impressions on the Memory of young Persons, whereby they may receive Benefit as long as they live, when both Almanack and Almanack-maker have been long thrown by and forgotten. If I now and then insert a Joke or two, that seem to have little in them, my Apology is, that such may have their Use, since perhaps for their Sake light airy Minds peruse the rest, and so are struck by somewhat of more Weight and Moment..." Above the calendar pages are humorous rhyming verses espousing Franklin's famed maxims on ethics, hard work and courtesy. On page 19, under the heading Courts, is an additional poem by Franklin on Justice: "From Earth to Heav'n when Justice fled, / The Laws decided in her Stead; / From Heav'n to Earth should she return, / Lawyers might beg, and Lawbooks burn." Miller locates nine extant complete copies of this issue of Poor Richard's Almanack. We find no record of this issue in commerce for the last half century. Miller 387; Campbell 345; Evans 5771; Hildeburn 993; Drake 9682.

        Original manuscript order book

1 May 1746-1 December, 1755.. Folio, 172 pp., ink manuscript in various hands; original vellum binding (probably Admiralty issue); title in ink on front cover ("Order Book 30th April 1746"); the vellum covers a bit soiled and darkening, inner hinge loose, internally in fine condition. A very rare example of its type, and a remarkable manuscript for its association with one of the mid-century heroes, the circumnavigator for whom James Cook named Byron Bay. This fact was forgotten by the town elders in the 1930s when, assuming that the bay and town had been named for the poet, they embarked on honouring other English literary figures: hence today's streets named for Burns, Johnson, Wordsworth, Tennyson and other figures rather less robust than the magnificent and splendidly named "Foul Weather Jack".Captain John Byron sailed with Anson as a midshipman aboard the Wager; his own printed narrative of the loss of the Wager gives one of the more important accounts of the Anson expedition. Byron's account of his circumnavigation of 1764-1766 on board the Dolphin was included as the first major voyage in Hawkesworth's compendium, where it joined the accounts of Wallis, Carteret and Cook. His journal of his circumnavigation survives, and was edited by R.E. Gallagher as Byron's Journal (Hakluyt Society, 1964).The present manuscript is the actual order book maintained by Byron in which are transcribed all the orders, signals, and other official communications received by him and sent by him in the course of his command of HMSs Vulture, Centurion, Syren, Falkland, St. Albans, Vanguard, and Augusta, 1746-1755. These commands followed immediately upon his return to England after nearly five years of privation following the Anson voyage and preceded his circumnavigation in the Dolphin.Byron went on to have an illustrious career as a Pacific explorer in his own right, commanding the Dolphin in a famous and difficult voyage dogged by appalling weather. After promotion to vice-admiral, he was later appointed governor of Newfoundland. Charnock noted of him that he had 'the universal and justly acquired reputation of a brave and excellent officer, but, of a man extremely unfortunate...'. He was certainly one of a quite strange line of men: known himself as "Foul Weather Jack" and sometimes as "The Jonah of the Wager", his eldest son was popularly known as "Mad Jack Byron"; Mad Jack, in his second marriage, fathered the poet Byron, famously both mad and bad. The poet felt quite a connection with his grandfather (arguing for example that the Patagonian giants, a myth for which his grandfather was mostly responsible, were authentic, and using many of the details of the wreck of the Wager in both Childe Harold and Don Juan). Captain John Byron's second son, George Anson Byron, had a distinguished career at sea, as did his son in turn, Captain and subsequently Lord Byron after the poet's death, who commanded the voyage of the Blonde.Order books such as this are of great rarity on the market and the present example, having belonged to one of the great figures in the history of British navigation, must be considered particularly desirable. This wonderful manuscript was formerly in the collection of David Parsons, before which it had been in continuous private ownership in Victoria, Australia, for at least seventy years.

This decorative map by Le Rouge shows North and South America, with the discoveries of Charlevoix and Condamine added in Canada and the Amazon, respectively. Interestingly, it also shows Aleksei Chirikov's discoveries on the northwest coast during Bering's second expedition, as well as Middleton's Repulse Bay in the Arctic. Concerning the former, Wroth writes: "In 1746 the royal geographer, George Louis Le Rouge, brought out a map entitled L'Amerique, in the northwest corner of which is shown a portion of the 1741 routes of Chirikov and De L'Isle de la Croyere to and from the American coast, the earliest cartographical record, it seems from present knowledge, of the American discoveries of the second Bering expedition. This map antedates by six years the publication of the De L'Isle -Buache map ... There is ground for belief that during his stay in Russia of twenty-one years J.N. Delisle sent to France through the French embassy copies of maps which passed through his hands as an employee and associate of the Academy of Science. Doubtless intended for the information of the French government, these would have become available to Le Rouge as royal geographer" (Wroth, Early Cartographer of the Pacific, p. 222). Since Wroth's essay, copies of the Le Rouge map have been found without the discoveries of Bering's second expedition, suggesting two issues of the map, with the second issue possibly issued at a date later than 1746 but retaining the original date in the cartouche.         An authentic narrative of the success of tar-water, in curing a great number and variety of distempers, with remarks. And occasional papers relative to the subject. To which are subjoyned two letters from the author of Siris

Pr. by Marg. Rhames for R. Gunne Dublin: Pr. by Marg. Rhames for R. Gunne, 1746. Period-style half calf and antique marbled paper–covered sides, corners tipped in vellum, spine with gilt-stamped leather labels. Title-page with ownership initials ("WS") inked in upper outer corner; pages age-toned, with mild to moderate foxing. A solid, pleasingly bound copy of an uncommon and interesting piece of medical history.. 8vo (20.8 cm, 8.25"). 4, 248, [2 (blank)] pp. Uncommon first edition: An impressive collection of testimonial letters describing the curative powers of tar-water in cases of asthma, influenza, scurvy and scorbutic disorders, gout, rheumatism, consumptive coughs, and even smallpox — offering a mass of anecdotal information on general ailments, standard treatments of the time (what the patients took or did before they discovered tar-water), and what was considered an intolerable condition as opposed to simply inconvenient. This volume was compiled by one of the founding members of the Royal Dublin Society and inspired by Bishop Berkeley's 1744 publication Siris, Philosophical Reflexions and Inquiries Concerning the Virtues of Tar-water (which praise of tar-water as a universal panacea enraged doctors throughout Great Britain, resulting in a flurry of published debate); it makes several references to Siris, and concludes with two letters from Berkeley, featuring his instructions on how to make the best tar-water and use it most effectively. The printer was Margaret Rhames, scion of a prominent Dublin printing family. WorldCat and ESTC locate only four U.S. institutional holdings of this edition, which preceded the London first.

Le Theatre Anglois Volume I - IV

London, 1746. First Edition. Full Calf. Very Good Condition. Light rubbing at edges of leather, a number of surface scratches and light stains, rubbing to gilt decoration to boards but generally bright. 5 raised bands on spines, marbled endpapers, comedy and tragedy masks stamped in gilt to the front and rear board of each volume. Lovely copies of La Place's translation of Shakespeare, the first to appear in English - volume one includes a lengthy introduction to the series as well as a Life of Shakespeare, Vol III has a preface and short history. Volume II has a light water stain on the bottom 1/4 of the page for much of the book, The Imprint is false, certainly printed in Paris but marked London to protect the publisher who had no "privilege du roi". Only Richard III was translated in the entirety, the rest bowdlerized and summarized to protect sensitive French ideas of proper theater. These led to both Voltaire's (who became increasingly embittered towards Shakespeare as the years progressed) decline as a Shakespeare authority and the heralded 1776 translation by Letourner. A vital 18th century work and the first attempt to introduce English theater to France. La Place also translated Tom Jones (in much the same fashion) a few years later. The plays are: Othello, Henry VI, Richard III, Hamlet, Macbeth, Cymbeline, Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, Timon, Merry Wives of Windsor, and the Beaumont and Fletcher Play A Maid's Tragedy. The untranslated plays are presented in short (2-6 page) summaries at the end of volumes III and IV. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 4-volume set (complete). Quantity Available: 1.       Königsberg, Martin Eberhard Dorn, 1746. 8vo. Nice newer full vellum with gilt spine. Title-page a bit soiled and with neat reapair to blank margins, far from affecting text. A bit of occasional browning and soiling. one plate repared from verso, no loss. Title-page + 16 pp. + pp. (3) - 240 + 2 folded engraved plates. Fully complete.. The exceedingly scarce first edition of Kant's debut, the first work that he ever published, at the mere age of 22. The work constitutes a milestone in the modern discussion of dimensionality.Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) - now considered, along with Plato and Aristotle, the most important philosopher of all time -, entered the university of Königsberg at the age of 16, in 1740. Here he studied mainly mathematics and physics under Martin Knutzen and Johann Teske, until his father's death in 1746. These years proved formative for the young philosophical genious, and his profound interest in the philosophy of science stems from this period. When his father died, however, Kant was forced to break off his studies to help provide for the family, which he did by working as a private tutor for three different families over a period of about nine years. Finally in 1755 he was able to resume his studies at the university, and the same year he received his doctorate of philosophy; in 1770 he was finally given a permanent position, as professor of logic and metaphysics at the University of Königsberg. It is here that he writes the works that have changed the entire trajectory of modern thought - his three seminal critiques, that of pure reason, that of practical reason, and that of judgment. The foundation of Kant's philosophy is laid during his early years of studying, which culminate is this his first publication, "Thoughts on the True Estimation of Living Forces", which constitutes an attempt to determine space dimensionality from a physical law. Kant initially adapted Leibnitz's view and tried to explain the nature of space by means of the forces of monads that cause such substances to interact. Although its basic idea was abandoned during his critic period, Kant's first work nonetheless constitutes amilestone in the modern discussion of dimensionality. "The two main influences on Kant in his philosophical reflections on science were Leibniz and Newton. During his first period of study at the University of Königsberg, from 1740 to 1746, Knutzen taught that version of Leibniz's metaphysics which the German philosopher Christian von Wolff had made popular. He also taught the mathematical physics which Newton had developed. He revealed to the young Kant the various oppositions, puzzles, and contradictions of these two great natural philosophers. The nature of space and time was what interested the young Kant most in these disputes between Leibniz and Newton. He studied the famous exchange of letters between Leibniz and Samuel Clarke, a defender of Newton's philosophy. [...] In his early years Kant pondered the nature of space and time first from the point of view of Leibniz and then of Newton, but eventually he found both positions unsatisfactory." (Ellington, in DSB: VII, pp. 225-26). The nature of space and space dimensionality that Kant attempts to uncover and explain in this his first work comes to found a basis for all his later thought. The role that physics, especially the concepts of space and time, plays for his view of the world and for the development of his philosophical thought is immense, and his earliest thoughts on the subject understream all of his later thought.Warda nr. 1

Ganska nött samtida lätt solkigt pappbd med brun titeletikett i papp. Diskret senare förstärkning i inre främre fals.

Dublin Printed London Re printed: For W. Innys C. Hitch and M. Cooper ... 1746.
