Gumilla, Joseph, S.J.
Second edition of a work first published in Madrid, 1741; this edition was revised and augmented by the author. José Gumilla (1686-1750) began working as a missionary in the Orinoco Valley (province of Amazonas, in Venezuela) in 1714. He rose to be the superior of the Jesuit missions there. When he briefly returned to Spain in the late 1730s, he compiled this early account of the valley's geography, natural history, and ethnography. Among the topics discussed: the cacao tree; characteristics of the Indians; the origin of black color and various racial mixtures; the customs of various Orinoco Indian tribes; dances; food; medicinal herbs; turtle fishing; arms and warfare; Indian languages; fatal poisons, including curare; and tobacco plants. The large folding map shows the length of the Orinoco River with its Jesuit missions, and the north coast of South America. One of the engravings shows musical instruments (at I, 209); the other shows a manatee and an Indian striking a war drum (at II, 112). Palau 111192. Streit III, 504. Backer-Sommervogel III, 1949. Leclerc 1471. Sabin 29275. Medina, Bibliotheca Hispano Americana, 3376.

DIDEROT (Denis), SHAFTESBURY (Anthony Ashley, comte de)]
Amsterdam, Zacharie Chatelain, 1745. LONGUS
Petit in-8 maroquin de l’époque, triple filet doré encadrant les plats, enfermant le cadre d’une guirlande dorée, dos lisse orné de fers dorés, filet doré sur les coupes, tranches dorées, (dans le style de Derôme) de 5 feuillets liminaires non chiffrés, 159-XX pages. Quelques rousseurs, petite déchirure sans manque restaurée à la page 1. Très jolie édition, fort recherchée, illustrée de la célèbre suite des figures du Régent : frontispice de Coypel, 4 culs-de-lampe, 4 en-têtes de Cochin, et 29 figures hors texte dont plusieurs à pleine page, par le Régent Philippe d'Orléans, gravées par Audran. La gravure dite "aux petits pieds", qui manque si souvent, est ici avant la lettre. Neveu de Louis XIV, Philippe d’Orléans avait été éloigné par la jalousie de son oncle des champs de bataille où il commençait à se couvrir de gloire. Le jeune duc se consola de son inaction en s’adonnant à la peinture et à la musique. Le gracieux roman de Longus, traduit par Amyot, lui a inspiré 29 compositions, retouchées et gravées par Benoit Audran. Il avait pour professeur de peinture Antoine Coypel. On remarquera 4 beaux culs-de-lampe de Cochin gravés spécialement pour cette édition de 1745. La dernière figure dite des petits pieds, dont le dessin a été attribué au comte de Caylus, ne faisait pas partie de la première édition publiée en 1718 (elle fut en fait gravée en 1729 et rajoutée aux exemplaires). LA CONDAMINE, M. de;
Paris, Chez la Veuve Pissot, 1745, First edition. 8vo [20.5 x 13 cm]; xvi, 216, [iv, privege du roi] pp, folding engraved map, errata. contemporary full tree calf, gilt spine title lettering on leather label, gilt spine decorations, all edges gilted, marbled endpapers, corners and spine end worn, small inkstamp on title page, interior quite clean and fine, cover very good. Sabin 38484. A French-Spanish expedition was sent to South America in 1736, to measure a degree of latitude in the area near Quito where the equator crossed, to determine the size and shape of the earth. The ten year expedition proved that the earth is flattened at the Poles. La Condamine returned by crossing Brazil via the Amazon. His narrative of his journey was of great importance, because for the first time the long course of the Amazon was traversed by a man of science capable of making astronomic observations, and determining longitudes.' [Borba de Moraes, I, 446] The fine engraved map of the Amazon and its tributaries accompanying the text was drawn by La Condamine himself, and is the first map in which the latitudes were observed and shown on the map.
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

The frontispiece was engraved by Pierre Soubeyran (1709 - 1775), after designs by Blaise Nicolas Le Sueur (1716-1783), and other engravings are of paintings or drawings by Pierre Mignard (1612 - 1625). The binding is similar to ones by Jacques Antoine Derome (d. 1761), but I didn't find a ticket or any specific indication of his work. Madame La Dauphine is, of course, Maria Theresa consort of Louis, dauphin of France 1726-1746.

As per Worldcat, probably a re-issue of the 1743 edition, with a new title-page; imprint place probably fictitious, given in Mansell 311:389 as [Paris, Barraud et David jeune] Cf. Rochambeau, Bibliographie, II, 522; not in Weller./ With added engraved title in vol. 1, by Lebas./ The vignettes are generally by Cochin; however, in this copy, three of them are by Larmesin after Lancret (v. 1: p. 69 and 71; vol. 2: p. 81)--Compare Rochambeau and Mansell./ "Dissertation sur La Joconde à Monsieur B*** par M. Boileau Despreaux," vol. 1, p. 201-224; "Vie de La Fontaine, " vol. 1, xiv page. Bindings are stunning, from the shop of THIERRY sc. de Petit-Simier, with a signature stamp in both volumes inside the front cover along the base. Extensively extra-illustrated with the plates of the 1820 edition, which are not included in the above pagination. VG+.

L'Isle, Guillaume de / Buache, Philippe
Paris, Philippe Buache, 1745. Hand-coloured engraved map (635 x 505 mm). A fine example of Philippe Buache's edition of Guillaume de l'Isles highly detailed map of the region centered on the Red Sea. The map extends west to include Sicily, the Southeastern Mediterreanean, Barbaria, Nigritie, and a Guinea on the West Coast of Africa. To the east, the map includes the Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf of Aden and the Kingdom of Ajan and Dadel. De l'Isle's maps provided the first truly scientific mapping of the regions covered, showing the flamboyant Dutch style of illustrations and adopting a highly detailed and decorative approach to the printed map. The result is a combination of spectacular detail and accuracy, not approached by the Dutch or any other 17th Century map makers. The detail in this map reflects this Renaissance of style and accuracy. - Tibbetts 199. Cf.

Hand-colored etching, die-cut and affixed to secondary sheet, lavishly embellished with period fabrics, lace, and fur, with a short poem below the illustration in French, general age-toning and spotting (mostly to margins), lace is brittle, otherwise in very good condition. Gorgeous piece of folk art, the etchings are very similar to other works of French Rococo engraver and printer Pierre-Louis de Surugue (1716 - 1772). A woman is depicted sitting in from of a church and is titled, "La Uraye Convertie". An anonymous artist, most probably in the late 18th or early 19th century, judging by the materials used, has cut out the clothes and the head covers of the lady and has fashioned stunning new ones from various silks, lace, and fur. DI MARIA FRANCESCO.
In 4° (210 x 155mm). 1 c.b., 16 pp., 163 pp., 1 c.b.. Tagli a spruzzo. [Click Below for Full Description]

Missal
Sumptibus Bibliopolarum, Paris 1745 - Large folio Missal (13” x 9”) owned by pioneering Catholic priest Father Ludwig de Barth, pastor of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania in 1795. At that time the town was a mission under St. Mary’s Church in nearby Lancaster, with no formal church of its own. The missal was kept at the later-established St. Peter’s Church in Elizabethtown until 1887, when the current pastor, Father Jules Foin, donated it to the American Catholic Historical Society. Of special interest is a Papal Urbis and Orbis letter acknowledging the Stuart Pretender James III (Jacobi III) as the rightful King of England, a practice followed by the Vatican until his death in 1766. Printed in red and black with text in Latin. Full leather with original worn covers, re-cornered and re-backed with new spine in six panels offset by raised bands and a gilt leather label. Browing to leaves, with occasional tears and repaired margins. Supplementary sections added at end dated 1749 and 1762. Six full page plates and historiated initials throughout. This is a well-used but historically significant early American Missal tracing its history to the earliest days of America. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

L'Isle, Guillaume de / Buache, Philippe.
Tibbetts 199. Cf. Al-Qasimi 268 (Paris ed. 1707).

Alessandro Bandiera
Tommaso Bettinelli, Venezia, 1745. In 16 (cm 11,5 x 18,5), pp. (40) + 322 + (1) + (1b). Parenti, p. 51.
