COVENS, Jean and MORTIER, Cornielle (after Guillaume Delisle)
Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 24.5" x 20.75". This wonderful map of the Lesser Antilles in the West Indies dates to circa 1745. Based on the earlier map by Delisle, the map covers from Guadeloupe to Grenada and includes the islands of Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Barbados. Incredibly detailed, several towns and rivers are identified, as are some coastal features. Curiously, Grenada is depicted upside down and situated more to the west and north than its actual location. This can be attributed to the manusctipt map by Petit, which was the original source for the Delisle map. Petit might have shifted the islands simply to fit them all on the same sheet. The position of Grenada would eventually be corrected by Buache in the 1760 resissue. The map is in good condition with minor wear and toning along the original centerfold. Minor offsetting and foxing. The Amsterdam publishing firm of Covens and Mortier (1665-c. 1862) was established by Cornelius Mortier and Jean Covens. Together, the two republished the works of great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, De Wit, and Ottens. The firm quickly grew into one of the largest and most prolific Dutch publishing outfits of the 18th century and enjoyed a long and prolific life under a variety of names. Guillaume Delisle (1675-1726) was a legendary French cartographer known for introducing a new standard of accuracy into 17th-century mapmaking. He was one of the cartogr … [Click Below for Full Description]

FOX, Henry [1st Baron Holland] (1705 - 1774)
London, 1745. unbound. 1 page, 4.75 x 7.25 inches, London, February 6, 1745 -- the lower half of an Exchequer receipt (but complete in itself), in part: "...the like sum...lent upon Credit of the said act, and paid of his Majesty's Exchequer the said Sixth Day of February, 1745, as by a Tally, bearing Date the same Day appears: And these together with his, or his Assigns Acquittance, shall be your Discharge herein..." Boldly signed by Henry Fox, George Lyttelton, and Richard Arundell as the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury. All three of these men would eventually be knighted. Very good(+) condition. British politician and Secretary of War best remembered for dispatching a large military force under the command of General Braddock to America with the intention of driving the French out of Ohio. Better known as the French and Indian War, the expedition culminated into the annihilation of the General and most of his forces (July 1755). This event would have everlasting consequences for both Britain and the American Colonies as it would cost Fox the office of Prime Minister and also launch the military career of Braddock%u2019s youngest officer, George Washington.

ROCK (Richard), Dr.
London: Printed by William Bowyer for M. Cooper. 1745 - FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo (in 4s), 201 x 115 mms., pp. [ii], 48, bound in recent crushed morocco, ruled in blink on cover, title in gilt on spine; title-page mounted, leaves remounted on stubs at gutter/inner margin, some minor marks, but a very good copy from the Selbourne Library collection with their small circular ink stamps to verso of title page and lower margin of page 41. Richard Rock advertised himself as "Chymist and Druggist" with premises near Ludgate Hill; one of his popular medications was Viper Drops. An image of him with an advert for his wares appears in Hogarth's The Four Times of the Day (Morning). Goldsmith described in Letter 68 of The Citizen of the World: "This great man is short of stature, is fat, and waddles as he walks." In this satirical pamphlet, "Dr." Rock claims, among other things, to have invented a "Creditorifuge Pill," which prevents creditors from successfully collecting monies owed to them Maslen and Lancaster. ¶ Fesch col. 1043 - Dorbon n°6446 (exemplaire identique) - Wolfstieg n°29963.

The coast is highly detailed with numerous notations in Latin regarding the peoples and tribes of the region. Features an elaborate engraving in the lower left depicting ivory, African tribespeople and a small village.Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724), and his son, Christoph Homann (1703-30) founded 18th century?s most important German cartography firm around 1702 in Nuremberg. In 1715 the elder Homann was appointed ?Imperial Geographer?? by Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI. This privileged position gave Homann access to the vast resources which enabled him to produce the most advanced and accurate maps of his period. Johann Baptist Homann died in 1724. Six years after his father?s death, Christoph also retired from the map business on the condition that all future maps produced by the firm be published under the name of ?Homann Heirs??. price: ? … [Click Below for Full Description]

BERKELEY GEORGE.
chez Pierre Mortier,, A Amsterdam, 1745. Cm. 17, pp. xxiv, 343 (3). Legatura coeva in piena pelle, dorso a nervi con fregi e titoli in oro; tagli rossi. Ex libris inciso: Edm. Leclair insul Doct. Pharmac. Esemplare genuino e ben conservato. Cfr. BERKELEY (George)
Amsterdam Chez Pierre Mortier 1745 - FIRST FRENCH TRANSLATION. 12mo, 168 x 100 mms., pp. xxiv, 343 [344 blank], including half-title, recent quarter sheepskin, red morocco label, old marbled boards. A goodish copy. "Jessop noted that the catalogue of the Surgeon-Geneeral's Library, Washington, attributes the translation to D. R. Bouiller. The translator suppressed Berkelery title, Siris, etc., explaining in his preface that he thought it misleading and too obscure for the generality of his readers. He stated that he used as the source of his text the 'third edition', that is presumably, the second Dublin edition; he had also profited by manuscript corrections and additions, which the author had supplied" (Keynes). Jessop 184. Keynes 73. The translation was reviewed in Acta Eruditorum (Leipzig, 1746). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
