An Exact Plan of His Majesty's Great Roads Through the Highlands of Scotland. To the Honourable Charles Leslie This Plan of His Majesty's Great Roads Through the Highlands of Scotland is Dedicated by Sir Your most Obedt. Humble Servt. And: Rutherford.

Publish'd according to Act of Parliament, Decr. 9th, 1745., London, - Lead up to the Battle of Prestonpans Large engraved broadsheet map, fine original hand-colour, inset plan of the Battle of Prestonpans, text below. Rare broadsheet map of the southern Highlands, centred on the region between Inverness in the north and Edinburgh in the south, illustrating the marches and counter-marches of the Hanoverian and Jacobite armies leading up to the battle of Prestonpans when the Highland army won a crushing victory over the King's forces. The base map was drawn by Rutherford from the journal of a gentleman who worked on General Wade's military road-building between 1726 and 1737.We have only been able to trace two other examples of this map: the (damaged) example in the National Library of Scotland, and another, with modern colour, in a private collection in Kent.         Compromisso da Misericordia de Lisboa.

Lisbon, Na Offic. de Joseph da Silva da Natividade, 1745. - Large woodcut of the Virgin on title page within typographical border. Woodcut intitial. (2), 42 ll. Folio (29.4 x 21 cm.), contemporary crimson sheep (minor wear), flat spine richly gilt, outer dentelles richly gilt, marbled endleaves, green silk ribbon place marker, text-block edges sprinkled red. In fine to very fine condition. ---- The Santa Casa da Misericordia (Holy House of Mercy) is a uniquely Portuguese Catholic charitable institution, founded in 1498 by Queen Leonor and still existing today. Eventually practically every Portuguese city had its Santa Casa da Misericordia, and the institution spread overseas to Goa, Macau, Bahia, etc. The present statutes are a revealing glimpse into gender and class divisions in mid-eighteenth century Portugal. The Santa Casa's administrators (thirty to sixty Irmãos) tackled duties that would today be the province of lawyers, accountants, hospital administrators, prison chaplains and chaperones. For example: the Irmãos must meet stringent standards, including that neither they (nor their wives, if married) have Jewish or Moorish blood, that they have a good reputation, be at least 25 years of age, not be manual laborers, have enough money to live without a salary and not be tempted by the money they administer, and that they can read and write. Grounds for dismissal include telling secrets learned in the course of their duties or marrying an orphan girl from the Santa Casa without permission. There are special provisions for determining whether to accept bequests (ch. 28).Since it was routine for the Irmãos to receive cash via letters from India and elsewhere, in settlement of wills or as dowries or as payment of ransom (ff. 18v, 21r, etc.), the statutes provide stringent rules for how money is to be reported and handled. There are stipulations about providing ransoms for captives of the Turks or Moors (ch. 32).Several pages are devoted to the procedures for allowing girls and women to live under the supervision of the Casa. Wealthy orphan girls must be between ages 13 and 20 (?por este ser o tempo de mayor perigo?), must provide their own support, can bring only one maid and a companion under age 10. Married women are only allowed to live there with their husband?s consent. Visitors are strictly limited and supervised (ff. 21r-22v). Orphans who are not wealthy are permitted to apply for a dowry from the Misericordia?s funds (f. 30r).The Mordomo da Botica is given extensive guidelines for feeding, clothing, and treating the sick (ff. 24v-25v).One of the Casa da Misericordia?s functions was to make certain that every Christian received a proper burial. The statutes also include instructions for burial, according to class: the poor and the ordinary, the better quality, and the Irmãos themselves, for whom elaborate rituals and regalia are prescribed (ff. 35v-37r). The Misericordia also accompanied criminals condemned to death; again, elaborate rituals are prescribed (ff. 37r-38v).The @Compromisso is particularly interesting for the chapters on the "Procissão das Endoenças" (the procession of the sick) and the procession for All Saints' Day (November 1), which set out the order of the participants, their banners and dress. We have seen illustrations of such processions, but few descriptions such as this of who walks where, carrying what, and why.---- Innocêncio II, 95. Not in Welsh or @Greenlee Catalogue; cf. (Biography, Government & Law, Foreign Language) Memoires de Maximilien de Bethune, Duc de Sully, Principal Ministre de Henry le Grand, Mis en ordre: avec des Remarques par M.L.D.L.D.L. [Translation: Memoirs of Maximilien de Bethune, Duke of Sully, Prime Minister of Henry the Great, arranged in order: with some remarks by M.L.D.L.D.L.]. A Londres [Paris]: Publisher not identified, 1745. Eight volume set. Text in French. First Thus Edition. Sullyâ&#128;&#153;s Memoirsâ&#128;&#148;also known as Ã&#137;conomies royalesâ&#128;&#148;was initially published in 1638. The text was arranged and presented in a new order and rewritten in modern French in 1745. Decimo-sexto, 6.75 x 4 inches. Contemporary calf leather binding with elaborate gilt tooling on spine and board edges. Each spine has red-leather labels and five raised hubs. Marbled endpapers. Red edge-stain to gutters. Title pages in red and black. Volume I, 416 pages. Volume II, 556 pages. Volume III, 563 pages. Volume IV, 449 pages. Volume V, 480 pages. Volume VI, 472 pages. Volume VII, 481 pages. Volume VIII, 377 pages. Frontispiece engraving of Maximilien de Bethune and second engraving of Henry IV in Volume I, both by E. Fessard. Minor toning or foxing to pages. Slight rubbing to boards with occasional scuffs. Spine show light wear, mainly to joints. Larger scuffs to front joint of Volume I. Edge wear with some bumping to corners and heads of spines. Very Good condition overall. <br><br> Maximilien de Bethune, duke de Sully, also called Marquis De Rosny [1560â&#128;&#148;1641], was a French statesman who, as the trusted minister of King Henry IV, substantially contributed to the rehabilitation of France after the Wars of Religion [1562â&#128;&#147;98]. <br><br> Maximilien was brought up as a Huguenot and was sent at an early age to the court of Henry of Navarre [later Henry IV of France]. Taken by Henry to Paris in 1572, he barely escaped death during the massacre of Protestants on St. Bartholomewâ&#128;&#153;s Day. During the civil wars Maximilien served Henry both in battle and as a special agent. He helped to arrange Henryâ&#128;&#153;s marriage to Marie de Médicis and to negotiate the Peace of Savoy. In 1603 he served as ambassador extraordinary to King James I of England. Although for political reasons he urged Henry to become a Roman Catholic, he refused to change his own religion. <br><br> The political role of the Duke de Sully practically came to an end with the assassination of Henry IV in 1610. Though Marie de Medicis, as regent for Louis XIII, at first retained him in her council, his colleagues were restive under his domineering leadership, and in January 1611 the queen accepted his resignation. He spent the rest of his life in retirement, writing his memoirs. <br><br> Sullyâ&#128;&#153;s Memoirs are very valuable for the history of the time and as an autobiography, in spite of the fact that they contain many fictions, such as a mission undertaken by Sully to Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1601. These memoirs are remarkable for their often-reprinted account of the â&#128;&#156;Great Designâ&#128;&#157;â&#128;&#148;which Sully attributes to Henry IVâ&#128;&#148;a European confederation, or â&#128;&#156;Christian republic,â&#128;&#157; to be established after the defeat of Austria and Spain. The famous &#39;Grand Design&#39; is often cited as one of the first grand plans and ancestors for the European Union. <br><br> Extra shipping may be necessary due to weight of this set. Must ship Priority for international orders.

Joints with slight wear, minor worming to top two spine compartments, covers with a bit of worming and a few marks, almost invisible repair to inner upper marginal corner of final plate and following blank, otherwise AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY, THE TEXT EXCEPTIONALLY FRESH, BRIGHT, AND CLEAN. This is a remarkably fresh and clean contemporary copy of one of the finest illustrated books of the 18th century. It is a wonderful oversized illustrated Venetian printing of a great Italian classic, which the normally reserved Graesse describes as a "magnificent edition in regards to the printing and the paper: the 20 plates and the headpieces by Piazzetta are beyond all praise." The engravings are highly detailed, romantic rococo illustrations of a major artist, Giambatista Piazzetta (1682-1754). Palluchini (as reported by Benezit) comments on the "subtle unity and vibrant luminosity" of Piazzetta's chiaroscuro, and he remarks that "Piazzetta's striking use of light, together with the bold compositions and handling seen in some of his works, make him an important precursor of Tiepolo." As for the author, Britannica says it as well as anyone: in his "Jerusalem Delivered," Tasso (1544-95) "aimed at ennobling the Italian epic style by preserving strict unity of plot and heightening poetic diction. He chose Virgil for his model, took the first crusade for [his] subject, [and] infused the fervor of religion into his conception of the hero Godfrey." But his inclination toward romance clashed with his original epical intentions, and the work became a classic early example of the poetry of sentiment. "This sentiment, refined, noble, natural, steeped in melancholy, exquisitely graceful, pathetically touching, breathes throughout the episodes of the 'Gerusalemme,' finds metrical expression in the languishing cadence of its mellifluous verse, and sustains the ideal life of those seductive heroines whose names were familiar as household words to all Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries." Unfortunately, the work, while still in manuscript, was condemned by contemporary critics on both religious and literary grounds, and the sensitive and conscientious author suffered a nervous breakdown, was later visited by a violent insanity, and was confined for seven years. When he was released, he discovered that his masterpiece had been published and that he was now famous. He was to have received the laurel crown with which Petrarch alone had been honored, but he died just before the presentation. Our copy comes from the collection of Starhemberg princes of Eferding, the best known of whom was Prince Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg, who as vice chancellor of Austria in the 1930s made a stand against the German takeover. The prince is featured in the historical novel, "The Sceptre," by Dorothy Jane Mills. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1745 - Stockholm, Historiographi regni tryckerij, 1745. 8:o. 32,1-201,292-346 pp. + Stockholm, L. L. Grefing, 1762. 8:o. (10),182 pp. Slightly worn contemporary half calf with raised bands and black coloured title field. Occasional small stains and some underlinings in ink. Bookplate of Emanuel af Geijerstam. A nice copy. The first work is, according to the interesting preface, translated by Anders Wilde, but other sources point to Hans Christian Risberg as the translator. It is a translation of Antoine Galland's French edition which was published in Paris. The second work is the first Swedish translation from a Turkish manuscript. Peter Rubens, or Rubenius, (1720-63) was among other things teacher of oriental languages at the university of Lund and also royal translator of Turkish. As such he participated at a number of official visits from the Orient. The Swedish ambassador in Constantinopel, Edvard Carleson, had brought several Turkish prints and manuscripts, among others a handwritten copy of "Hümayun-name" which was translated by Rubens. "Hümayun-name" is the name of a Turkish adaption of a collection of fables, which is probably more known under its Arabic title, "Kalila wa-Dimna". The story is originally from India and was written around 300 B. C., but became widely spread when it was translated into Arabic by Abdallah ibn al-Muqaffa some four hundred years later. The story has been characterised as a "mirror for princes" in the form of a fable, but critics have objected that if this is to be "regarded as a mirror for princes, then we are all kings". The Swedish translation was published with the financial support of the parliament in 1755. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Principes de la philosophie morale

Principes de la philosophie moralDIDEROT, Denis. Principes de la philosophie morale ou essai de M. S...sur le mÃ?rite et la vertu. Avec rÃ?flexions. Amsterdam: chez Zacherie Chatelain, 1745.First edition. xxx, 297, [1, blank], [10, tables des matiÃ?res, errata] pp. With title-vignette, two engraved frontispieces (one for each part), and two head-pieces by Fessard after Durand.Citron morocco, gilt back with raised bands, gilt triple-rule border on sides with gilt stamped floral ornament in corners, inner gilt-dentelles, all edges gilt. Lower cover slightly discolored, otherwise a beautiful copy. Housed in a custom brown cloth clamshell.\"Rather a paraphrase than a translation of Lord Shaftesbury\'s An Inquiry Concerning Virtue and Merit. Yet it is a very important work, indeed, for the growth and development of his thought. It was Diderot who furnished the RÃ?flexions in a preliminary discours and lengthy footnotes to which students of Diderot now turn for precious indications of the unfolding of his ideas...It will be noticed that the French version is anonymous, neither Shaftesbury\'s name nor that of the translator was mentioned. The reason was that there was some danger involved in presenting to the French public a work that declared so boldly for the existence of a natural morality independant of any particular religion or church\" (Arthur M.         Maria Anna, Archiducissa Austriæ, Nata Ao. 1718 d. 14 Sept. Caroli Principis Lotharing. Conjux. desponsata Ao. 1744. d. 7. Januari

Published by Martin Engelbrecht, Augsburg 1745 - Engraving with thick early colour with gold highlights. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of some minor foxing in the margins. Image size: 10 1/8 x 7 1/8 inches. A lovely portrait, with stunning early colour, of Maria Anna, Archduchess of Austria, by the celebrated Augsburg engraver Martin Engelbrecht. Maria Anna (1718-1746) was Maria Theresa's younger sister. In 1744, she married Charles Alexander of Lorraine, brother of Francis Stephen, Maria Theresa's husband and, nominally, Emperor. She died in 1746 in childbirth. Martin Engelbrecht was one of the most prolific engravers and printsellers in Augsburg at the close of the 17th century. Along with his brother Christian, Martin dominated the print trade, producing some of the finest prints of his day. His outstanding portraits and landscape studies are beyond compare and his religious and allegorical engravings display a technical aptitude superior to many of his contemporaries. Martin had great success with his optical prints, which were used in perspective boxes. He is best remembered for his equestrian portraits depicting European nobility, and his engravings of Queen Elizabeth and Joseph II are numbered amongst his best work. This stunning portrait of Maria Anna is a rare example with vibrant early colour and is a wonderful example of Engelbrecht's superior work.

Reglas utiles para los aficionados a danzar: provechoso divertimiento de los que gustan tocar instrumentos. Y politicas advertencias a todo genero de personas. Adornado con varias laminas.Capoa, Joseph Testore, 1745. Small 8vo (14×10 cm). With 35 woodcuts in text (including many full-page), 7 folding leaves with woodcut music notation and letterpress text, and some letterpress text set along curves. Many of the full-page woodcuts and some on the folding leaves also include dance notation. Mid 19th-century gold-tooled green calf, with the emblematic device of the "Bibliotheca de Salvá" and initials VSP (=Vicente Salvá y Pérez) on each board.

Biblioteca de Salvá 2513 (this copy); Derra de Moroda 925; Huth library 2848; cf. S.S. Bueno "Reglas útiles para los aficionados a danzar..., de Bartolomé Ferriol i Boxeraus" ; Magriel, p. 98 (Malaga ed.); Palau 90688-90789 (Naples & Malaga ed.). One of the three editions, all dated 1745, of a richly illustrated work on dancing by the Catalan dance instructor D. Bartolome Ferriol y Boxereaux. Derra de Moroda considers it one of the two principal works of 18th-century dance in Spain ("a very rare book"), although it primarily describes the practice of French dance then in vogue. The main text is divided into 3 parts treating the different steps of French dance, the movement of the legs and arms and the art of choreography. It shows both the dance notation of Feuillet and that of Rameau. The book is fascinating not only as an important record of dance and its notation, but also for its experimental graphic design. From the Salvá library, formed by Vicente Salvá y Pérez (1780-1849) and his son, Pedro Salvá y Mallén (1811-1869). Title-page restored in the gutter margin and leaf C2 with a small corner torn off just touching the catchword. Very good copy of one of the principal sources on the history of dancing in Spain in the 18th century.

'T Hooge Heemraedschap van Rhynland. [Amsterdam, Isaak Tirion], 1746. Very large engraved wall map of the Rijnland water district in 12 map sheets and 1 title-sheet, the title-sheet divided into 3 strips, the whole mounted on cloth (measuring 185 x 169 cm as assembled). Coloured and shellacked by a contemporary hand, with gold for the lettering of the title and the coat of arms. With the water board's coat of arms, and two decorative cartouches listing the members of the water board in 1687 and 1746. Framed.

Donkersloot-De Vrij 715. Third state (extensively corrected and updated) of a finely engraved wall map of the Rijnland water district in Holland, including the cities of Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden and (on the district border) The Hague. At a scale of about 1:30,000 it shows the entire district and some surrounding land in great detail, with the fortifications and (outside the cities) the individual houses, windmills, churches and other buildings shown, besides the roads, paths, waterways, and the individual parcels of land in the polders. In 1745 the Rijnland waterboard ordered the surveyor Melchior Bolstra to correct the outdated map of Dou and Broeckhuysen of 1647, which had been slightly revised in 1687. The results of Bolstra's new survey were engraved on the original plates by David Coster.Evenly browned, except along the edges of the sheets, and some small smudges. Good copy of a large wall map of the Rijnland water district.

Planisphere Representant Toute L&#39;Etendue du Monde

Amsterdam: Reiner Ottens, 1745. Engraved handcoloured map with ornate neoclassical ornamentation, 538 x 313 mm. (sheet size), fine. A magnificent French early eighteenth-century map of the world depicting the orb resting upon the shoulders of a finely engraved Hercules, complete with club and lion-skin cloak. The map is from the Atlas de la Navigation et du Commerce first published by Louis Renard and reissued twice by the Amsterdam bookseller Reiner Ottens in 1739 and 1745. The map is an example of the partially coloured issue, with the continents treated in primary colours, and is a fine example of Dutch neoclassical ornamentation. This map treats Australia as a super-continent: it is labelled both Terres Australes and Nouvelle Hollande and incorporates qualities of both geographical conceptions. While the Australian coast has no pretensions to exactitude it is nonetheless interesting that a strait is shown between New Guinea and Terres Australes. The extreme extension of the antipodes on this map is unusual given the north polar perspective it is generated from. Louis Renard (c.1678-1746), was a French born entrepreneur and spy for the English monarchy who flourished in Amsterdam as a printer and bookseller. He published a wide range of works aside from his maps and atlases, and is best known for his beautifully illustrated handbook of tropical marine fishes first published in 1719. In addition to selling books and prints, Renard traded as an apothecary and broker of English bonds in the Netherlands. For some years he was in the employment of the English crown as an agent and spy, and during his lifetime worked for Queen Anne, the Kings George I and George II.

A MAP OF NORTH AMERICA With the European Settlements & whatever else is remarkable in ye. WEST INDIES from the latest and best Observations.

London. c1745 - Size: 485 x 385 mm. Fine condition. Copper engraving. Hand coloured. Very attractive eighteenth century map of North America produced at a transitional point in terms of European understanding of the geography of the New World - the Mississippi Valley, Mexico, the Great Lakes, and the Atlantic Coast are portrayed in detail with great accuracy, while the north-western portion of the continent is labelled "Parts Unknown" and California is depicted as an island. It is one of the last maps to perpetuate that misinformation about California, which had influenced cartography for some 145 years. Also shown are routes of explorers, mountains as raised topography, European and Indian towns, forts, and castles. Shaded areas marked with arrows indicate the trade winds. Decorative title cartouche at lower right. The map was drawn & engraved by Richard Wilson Seale (fl.1732-1773) for "The History of England" Written in French by Mr. Rapin de Thoyras. Translated into English with Additional Notes by N. Tindal. M.A. the Vicar of Great Waltham in Essex, England. This is a very attractive map with excellent detail. Published in 'Mr. Tindal's Continuation of Mr. Rapin's History of England'.

An Essay upon Poetry and Painting, with Relation to the Sacred and Prophane History. With an Appendix concerning Obscenity in Writing and Painting.

Dublin: Printed for Ignatius Kelly. 1745 - 12mo (in 6s), 162 x 90 mms., pp. [ii], 202 [203 -214 Index], recent boards, paper label on spine; occasional staining of text; with small binder's ticket on lower margin of front paste-down end-paper: "Bound by Antiquarian Bookcrafts Mary Craft Courtyard, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16." Lamotte's work was first published in London in 1730 and reprinted in 1731. It was published in Dublin - "printed for Thomas Bacon" - in 1742, and this would appear to be the same sheets with a cancel title-page, which is clearly tipped onto A2. Lamotte (?1781 - 1741) Lamotte is at pains to point out what he considers lascivious or obscene in painting, but he doesn't call for its suppression. His aesthetic principles are eclectically, but inflexibly, classical. The work also contains a ten-page comment on the origin of clocks and time-keeping. ESTC N9429 locates copies in National Library of Ireland and Trinity College [Dublin] Library in these islands; Haverford, Princeton, Library Company of Philadelphia, and California Irvine in North America.
