The Itinerary of John Leland the Antiquary. In Nine Volumes. The Second Edition: Collated and Improved from the Original MS. With the Addition Also of a General Index.

Oxford: Printed at the Theatre; for James Fletcher and Joseph Potte 1745-4. - Leland (1506?-1552) has been called "the father of English local history." He established the county as the basic unit for studying the local history of England. He was educated at Christ's College, Cambridge, All Souls College, Oxford, and in Paris, and at different times had the patronage of Thomas Wolsey and Thomas Cromwell. He was appointed prebendary of Wilton Abbey in 1535 and received two adjacent benefices. In 1533 he was apparently entrusted by the kind with a document which authorized him to examine the libraries of all the religious houses in England, and he made numerous lists of significant books in these libraries, for the most part before they were dissolved. He subsequently made many journeys, including five major itineraries to various regions of Britain, and on these he kept notebooks, writing down information he gleaned from personal observation, from books, charters, and oral sources. Though Leland's Itineraries remained unpublished until the eighteenth century, they provided important source material for Camden's Britannia (1586) and many other works. His other works included Latin poetry, a treatise on King Arthur, the "New Year's Gift" (a letter addressed to Henry VIII), a biographical dictionary of famous British authors, and others. Nine volumes, octavo in fours. With a large, folding copper-engraved plate in Volume VIII. Engrqaved vignette of the Sheldonian Theatre on title-page of Volume I. Original marbled boards with vellum backstrips. Spines a bit rubbed, with hand-lettering mostly worn off, a few hinges with minor spilits. Minor wear to covers. A remarkably fine, uncut set. The greatly revised second edition of the works of John Leland first published in 1710. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Gez. u Gest. H. Hessell. Plate mark 15 x 9 cm. The whole sheet 25,5 x 16,5 cm. Aquatint. At the verso there is the blue collectors stamp of Christian Hammer. One of the greatest swedish collectors in the 19th. century. A little residue of paper strips in two corners at the verso, after an earlier mounting. Nice condition.. A portrait of Carl Wilhelm von Woelckern. The remarkable thing about this portrait is that it was probably executed in the rare physionotrace technique. It looks and has all the caharcteristics of a physionotrace, but there is no mentioning of the method on the plate. The physionotrace technique was invented in the mid 1780s. by the frenchman Gilles-Louis Chrétien (1745 - 1811). The present one was executed by Leonhard Heinrich Hessell (1756 - 1819) which means that this is a german physionotrace. A very rare thing to find. Most examples are french. Hessell used his own method called the "Hessellischen Treffer", a development of the french method. A physionotrace was executed by a mechanical device capturing a profile in a very detailed way. The physionotrace is regarded as an important stepping stone toward the development of photography. No machine is preserved to this day, just a sketch in the Bibliotheque National in Paris. Its history is brief from its invention in the 1780s to its disappearance in the early 18th. century. Accordingly, physionotrace images are very rare today. Few countries outside France produced these kind of images, Germany and the United States being two of them

VITA E LETTERE DI AMERIGO VESPUCCI GENTILUOMO FIORENTINO RACCOLTE E ILLUSTRATE DALL' ABATE ANGELO MARIA BANDINI

Florence: Stamperia All' Insegna de Apollo, 1745.. lxxvi,128,[1]pp. Copper engraved vignette on titlepage. One woodcut in the text. Quarto. Old (near contemporary) plain boards. Some slight soiling. A fresh, wide-margined copy. Very good, untrimmed. This copy does not contain the folding genealogical table. The life of Amerigo Vespucci, including his letters describing alleged voyages to America, as well as Girolamo Sernizi's account of Vasco da Gama's journey. Described by Sabin as "an elaborate panegyric of Vespucius, in which he is called the Discoverer of America. The researches of later Spanish authors have shown Bandini's dates to be incorrect." "This classic work is much sought after....It can be affirmed that the book's publication inflamed the literary controversy about Vespucci that impassioned the greatest 'Americanists' of ensuing decades. It is an indispensable work, a true landmark in Vespucian studies" - Borba de Moraes. SABIN 3149. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 745/218. PALAU 23255. BORBA DE MORAES, p.59. JCB (1)III:793.         1745 - 1789 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL, LEDGER AND DIARY OF A WEALTHY LANDLORD ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA - EX LIBRIS HPK [HANS PETER KRAUS]

Toulon, France 1745 - On offer is a stunning look into the the mind, finances and economy of Rudelle Dalzon a landlord, caterer and food supplier in pre Revolutionary France on the French Riviera. Many layered, very thick, elephant folio list many, many hundreds of transactions for rents, properties listed, supplies purchased, traded, sums loaned and paid plus many pieces of ephemera stuffed inside. Unpaginated, in original boards on thick paper there are at least 200 pages at two inches thick. Rudelle begins in 1745 and writes well into 1780s. There are at least two businesses running and ancilliary loans with corresponding notes. Mentions of trade with members of the King's staff. Many years of research in this ancient ledger. Rudelle diarizes his thoughts regarding most years in a special middle section of the book. Truly fascinating pre-Revolution manuscript and a delight for historians of the French Riviera. This journal boasts a very discreet Ex Libris HPK label identifying it from the library of the famed book collector Hans Peter Kraus. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Family Expositor o

London - J. Waugh 1745 - Two original leatherbound volumes. Two very early volumes of this influential edition of the New Testament. Philip Doddridge (1702-51) was an English Nonconformist leader and writer. Throughout the 1730s and 1740s Philip Doddridge continued his academic and pastoral work, and developed close relations with numerous early religious revivalists and independents, through extensive visits and correspondence. Through this approach he helped establish and maintain a circle of influential independent religious thinkers and writers, including Dr Isaac Watts. He also became a prolific author and hymn-writer. This is volumes one and two only. Condition: These volumes could do with some repair work. The bindings are tight and firm, although the front outer hinges are cracked and the rear boards are holding by the cords only and these could become detached in the post. There is some wear to the extremities including bumping to the corners, heavy rubbing, scratches and some loss to the leather. There is some loss to the spine label of volume 2. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and odd spot. The front blank endpaper of Volume 2 is detached and present but the rear blank endpaper is detached and missing. There are no blank endpapers present in Volume 1 and there is some creasing and a tear with loss to the bottom of the title page. Overall the volumes are in good only condition.

Florence, Italy: Presso Giuseppe Volpini Cartolaro This is not a bilingual edition. Text in Italian only, not in English. First edition. Presumed contemporary vellum spine and corners with later marbled paper boards. The binding is quite handsome and in very good condition. Virtually unbumped spine head and tail and with gently bumped corners. With a leather title label laid on to the spine. Fairly crisp gilt-stamped lettering to the leather label, "Statue di Firenze 1 2 3." No publication date but presumed printed in the last quarter of the 18th century. 7.75 x 5.5 inches. Three volumes in one. The text block is firmly bound in. Pages may have been trimmed. Each volume consists primarily of unsigned plates. 320 copper-engraved plates in total, including 312 quarter-sized and 8 full-page. Preface to each volume by the compiler, Giovanni Chiari. Curiously, each volume's title page reads "Parte I." Doubtless a printer's error and found in at least one other copy of this book [Getty Museum copy]. Engraved title pages, illustrated, signed by the engraver: G. Vascellini (engraver of the unsigned plates?). Vascellini lived 1745-1805. Chiari was active in the 18th century. Vol. 1: 8 p., 25 leaves of plates; Vol. 2: 8 p., 41 leaves of plates; Vol. 3: 7 p., 20 leaves of plates. Part 1. As is the case with this copy, a copy of this book in the Getty Library is also bound as one volume; each part's engraved title-page says "Parte I." Blue ribbon page marker. Very light off-setting of the plates to the opposite pages. Else an exceptionally clean copy. Remarkably free of foxing, stains, tears, ink marks or other demerits. A Very Good Plus copy. Very scarce in any condition. It has been suggested that this book was published with the intention that the buyer would cut out the small plates (about 2.75 x 2 inches) and use then as place cards at the banquet table, filling in the blank lozenge in the lower third of each plate with the name of the dinner guest. Obviously, if true, this would account for the fact that there are few surviving copies of the book. Questa non è una edizione bilingue. Testo solo in italiano, non in inglese. Prima edizione. Inoltre 3 frontespizi figurati. Presumed First Edition. Decorative Boards. Very Good Plus. Illus. by Vascellini, Gaetano. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Londini: Typis J. Brindley 1745 - 5 volumes. 12mo (in 6s), 120 x 72 mms., pp. [ii], xii, 135 [136 blank]; [ii], 328; [ii], 196; [ii], 154; [ii], 162 [163 adverts, 164 blank], contemporary lightly mottled calf, spines ornately gilt in compartments to a thistle motif, red leather labels; spines rubbed, with most of gilt missing from volume 3 and some from volume 4, extremities a little worn, but a decent set, with the armorial bookplate of the Earl of Normanton (i. e., Charles Agar, first earl of Normanton [1736–1809]) on the front paste-down end-paper of each volume. The text was edited by Usher Gahagan (d. 1749), the Irish classical scholar. He edited a number of Brindley's classical imprints, all beautifully printed and often in fine bindings. Alas for scholarship: he was hanged on 20 February 1749, for "diminishing the coin of the realm" by filing small pieces off gold and silver coins. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Aristotelous peri kosmou, pros Alexandron. Aristotelis de Mundo liber, ad Alexandrum. Cum versione Latina Gulielmi Budaei.

Glasguae: In Aedibus Academicis Excudebat R. Foulis. 1745 - 12mo (in 6s), 145 x 82 mms., pp. [iv], [1] - 76 [77 - 78 errata, 79 contents, 80 blank], with the adverts leaf after the title-page, contemporary mottled calf; library stamp on lower margin of title-page and library shelf marks on verso of title-page, labels removed from end-papers, binding a little rubbed, but a good copy with the slightly bizarre engraved bookplate of William Gilpin, depicting a wild boar on a shield, with Gilpin's pencil inscription "Hunc Libellus/ Bib Gul. Gilpin/ A A D D" on the recto of the leaf before the title-page. The bookplate is probably that of the author William Gilpin (1724 - 1804), whose Essay on Prints (1768) was an 18th century best-seller. Possibly he etched the bookplate himself, or it was done by his brother Sawrey Gilpin (1733–1807), who was a well-known painter of animals. The work is erroneously attributed to Aristotle; it is also the first edition of this work to be published by one of the Foulis brothers, and there were no subsequent editions. Gaskell 59.         INSTRUCTIONS TO SIR PAUL METHUEN, HIS MAJESTY'S AMBASSADOR IN SPAIN 1717, UPON WHICH THE TREATY OF MADRID DEC. 14, 1715, SIGNED BY MR. BUB, WAS FOUNDED. This paper was drawn by the Right Honble. Horatio Walpole, Esq., then Commis. to My Lord Townshend at that time sole Secretary of State [manuscript title].

[N.p. N.d., but ca. 1745]. - 17pp. Folio. Loose gatherings. Light vertical crease. Near fine. A later copy of the instructions given in 1715 to Ambassador to Spain Sir Paul Methuen, in order to negotiate a commercial treaty with that nation, which lists in fifteen detailed sections the possible positions the Spanish negotiators might take and Methuen's possible answers to them. Where, or even if, there is a 1715 original, is unknown to us. The Treaty of Madrid was signed Dec. 14, 1715, after the initial Treaty of Utrecht, signed in 1713. Methuen began negotiations, but George Bubb closed and signed the treaty on behalf of England. "George Bubb, afterwards celebrated as George Bubb Dodington, Methuen's successor at Madrid, negotiated a new commercial treaty.to the lively satisfaction of the English trading classes. By it duties on commerce in the two countries were reduced to the status quo of the reign of Charles II (of Spain, and each contracting party conceded to the other the privileges of the most favored nation, a clause highly injurious to the French woolen manufacture" - Hunt & Poole. One of the articles specifically mentions indigo and other products from the West Indies, used in the British woolen manufacture. This document was drawn up by Horatio Walpole, 1st Baron Walpole of Wolverton (1678-1757) several years later (the watermark in the paper dates to around 1745), and appears to be, in some capacity, official. Walpole was a diplomat and politician, brother of the powerful Prime Minister and the uncle of the author Horace Walpole. William Hunt & Reginald L. Poole, eds. THE POLITICAL HISTORY OF ENGLAND, (1921).

Maria Anna, Archiducissa Austriæ, Nata Ao. 1718 d. 14 Sept. Caroli Principis Lotharing. Conjux. desponsata Ao. 1744. d. 7. Januari

Augsburg: Published by Martin Engelbrecht, 1745. A lovely portrait, with stunning early colour, of Maria Anna, Archduchess of Austria, by the celebrated Augsburg engraver Martin Engelbrecht. Maria Anna (1718-1746) was Maria Theresa's younger sister. In 1744, she married Charles Alexander of Lorraine, brother of Francis Stephen, Maria Theresa's husband and, nominally, Emperor. She died in 1746 in childbirth. Martin Engelbrecht was one of the most prolific engravers and printsellers in Augsburg at the close of the 17th century. Along with his brother Christian, Martin dominated the print trade, producing some of the finest prints of his day. His outstanding portraits and landscape studies are beyond compare and his religious and allegorical engravings display a technical aptitude superior to many of his contemporaries. Martin had great success with his optical prints, which were used in perspective boxes. He is best remembered for his equestrian portraits depicting European nobility, and his engravings of Queen Elizabeth and Joseph II are numbered amongst his best work. This stunning portrait of Maria Anna is a rare example with vibrant early colour and is a wonderful example of Engelbrecht's superior work. Engraving with thick early colour with gold highlights. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of some minor foxing in the margins. Image size: 10 1/8 x 7 1/8 inches.

South Prospect of Worksop Mannor, in the County of Nottingham

Engraved by Saml. & Natl. Buck and Published according to Act of Parliament, No. 1 Garden Court, Middle Temple, London 1745 - A spectacular panoramic view of Worksop Manor, the sprawling family seat of the Duke of Norfolk. Between 1720 and 1752, Samuel Buck and his younger brother Nathaniel toured England and Wales to record the castles and abbeys that scattered the countryside. Their detailed views provide an invaluable record of England's architectural antiquities, offering, in some cases, the only trace of ruined or lost buildings. Nathaniel and Samuel executed over 400 views in addition to 100 general views of English and Welsh cities. These detailed panoramas remain some of their most sought-after works, providing a fascinating view of England's most prominent cities. The Worksop Manor pictured here, a superb example of Elizabethan architecture, burnt down in 1761, not very long after the Buck's made this engraving. Engraving. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, mild rippling and creasing, and a bit of minor mat burn.

"The work of father Gumilla is one of the most curious and interesting hitherto published upon the country of the Orinoco." (Sabin 29276). "He travelled widely on the Middle Orinoco and had ascended to Apure, Arauca and Meta rivers. and in 1741 published what was the first descriptive account of the Orinoco and its tributaries.
