[N.p., 1745. Folio. Loose gatherings. Light vertical crease. Near fine. In a cloth and marbled boards clamshell case. A later copy of the instructions given in 1715 to Ambassador to Spain Sir Paul Methuen, in order to negotiate a commercial treaty with that nation, which lists in fifteen detailed sections the possible positions the Spanish negotiators might take and Methuen's possible answers to them. Where, or even if, there is a 1715 original, is unknown to us. The Treaty of Madrid was signed Dec. 14, 1715, after the initial Treaty of Utrecht, signed in 1713. Methuen began negotiations, but George Bubb closed and signed the treaty on behalf of England. "George Bubb, afterwards celebrated as George Bubb Dodington, Methuen's successor at Madrid, negotiated a new commercial the lively satisfaction of the English trading classes. By it duties on commerce in the two countries were reduced to the status quo of the reign of Charles II (of Spain), and each contracting party conceded to the other the privileges of the most favored nation, a clause highly injurious to the French woolen manufacture" - Hunt & Poole. One of the articles specifically mentions indigo and other products from the West Indies, used in the British woolen manufacture. This document was drawn up by Horatio Walpole, 1st Baron Walpole of Wolverton (1678-1757) several years later (the watermark in the paper dates to around 1745), and appears to be, in some capacity, official. Walpole was a diplomat and politician, brother of the powerful Prime Minister and the uncle of the author Horace Walpole.

1745. |~||~||~|BOUND BY PADELOUP LOUIS XV, King of France. Engraved throughout. With title-page, allegorical frontispiece, [18] pp. of calligraphic text within ornamental borders, and 19 plates, of which 10 are double-page. Folio, 620 x 470 mm, bound by Padeloup (signed with his ticket at foot of title-page): in contemporary full red morocco, outer border of fleurs-de-lis, spine gilt with the royal monogram in spine compartments, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. [Paris], 1745. |~||~||~||~||~||~| First and Only Edition. "Très beau livre de fêtes" (Cohen-De Ricci), and a politically important Official French work of art issued during the reign of Louis XV, being the record of the royal wedding of Louis, Dauphin de France (aged 16) to Marie-Thérèse de Bourbon (of Spain, aged 19). The marriage took place on February 23, 1745, in Versailles with all the expected ostentation. There were major celebrations in Paris as well; and the present volume illustrates the problems - and ingenious solutions - in accomodating the greatest number of "celebrants." Magnificent "Pleasure Halls" were erected throughout Paris wherein the French court and populace danced, dined and drank till the wee hours of the night on the royal wedding day. These Halls left the outer walls exposed, and thus the festivities literally spilled out into the streets, as shown by the scenes of revelry depicted herein. The monarchy held their private ceremonies at Versailles, which are also illustrated with great fidelity in the present volume. The plates offer a wealth of details of every aspect of the festivities, with cross sections, ground plans and elevations; two plates supply illustrations of the great banquet tables adorned with elaborate centerpieces, silverware and ornamental candlesticks. Unfortunately, the marriage was short-lived, as the young bride, Marie-Thérèse, died shortly thereafter. To insure the succession of the throne, a second marriage was arranged; the Dauphin and Marie-Josephe of Saxony were married in 1747. To them were born eight children of which 3 ruled as Kings of France: the future Louis XVI, Louis XVIII, and Charles X. The Dauphin himself never ascended the throne, and died before his father (Louis XV) in 1765. The identity of the artists of the unsigned plates has been the subject of some confusion: Cohen-De Ricci grant authorship of the large plates to C. N. Cochin the elder, engraved by Cochin and his son (although one plate was certainly engraved by Oubvrier, and was so signed). However, this copy offers an important piece of evidence as to source of the illustrations: at the foot of the title-page is a MS label inscribed: "Dessiné et gravé par les soins de François Blondel, Architect du Roy." Two other copies (including the Furstenberg-Schäfer copy) bear a similar MS label, thus clearly assigning authorship to Blondel (or his workshop). Certainly the title-page was designed by Eisen (engraved by De Lafosse; the verso of title-page gives a rare instance of a woman's participation: "Marie F. Verard femme Lattré scrip."). The first plate, which includes a portrait of the Dauphin, is drawn by Charles Hutin and engraved by Le Bas. Hutin is recognized as one of the great master painters and decorators of the eighteenth century; and Portalis and Béraldi claim "ce n'est pas une exagération de dire que Le Bas est l'incarnation la plus complète de la gravure du XVIIIe siècle." In this copy, the lettering of the plate "Vue perspective de la salle du bal ... de l'Hotel de ville" is within a frame of double rules & has a background of wavy vertical lines; other copies exist with the said lettering without a frame and the background is plain (priority indeterminate). A splendid copy in a deluxe binding by the royal binder, Padeloup (signed with his ticket). Cohen-De Ricci, col. 392. Brunet II, col. 1239. Graesse, v. 2, p. 574. Vinet 522.

Florence, 1745. Quarto. Old (near contemporary) plain boards. Some slight soiling. A fresh, wide-margined copy. Very good, untrimmed. This copy does not contain the folding genealogical table. The life of Amerigo Vespucci, including his letters describing alleged voyages to America, as well as Girolamo Sernizi's account of Vasco da Gama's journey. Described by Sabin as "an elaborate panegyric of Vespucius, in which he is called the Discoverer of America. The researches of later Spanish authors have shown Bandini's dates to be incorrect." "This classic work is much sought after....It can be affirmed that the book's publication inflamed the literary controversy about Vespucci that impassioned the greatest 'Americanists' of ensuing decades. It is an indispensable work, a true landmark in Vespucian studies" - Borba de Moraes.

No place, c. 1745/1750.. Ink on paper, 15 segments mounted on cloth (ca. 138 x 72 cm). Folded.. Large-scale genealogy of the House of Medici beginning in the early 13th century and ending with Gian Gastone de' Medici, the seventh and last Medicean Grand Duke of Tuscany. With his death in 1737, nearly 300 years of Medici rule over Florence came to an end. He was survived by his sister Anna Maria Luisa, Electress Palatine, for less than six years, and was succeeded as Grand Duke of Tuscany by Francis Stephen of Lorraine, soon to be Emperor Francis I. The present chart, apparently drawn up shortly after the extinction of the family in 1743, is decorated with several designs of the Medici arms dangling from the family tree's branches, and the names of the last three scions - Ferdinando, Gian Gastone, and Anna Maria - are drawn with their appropriate crowns, as are those of Popes Leo X, Clemens VII, and Leo XI. As the title announces, the genealogy includes the secondary branch of the Medici Family known as the Princes of Ottaiano (near Naples), here ending with Alessandro de' Medici (1560-1606), General of the Papal States. Descendants of this last remaining line, which still flourishes, unsuccessfully claimed the title of Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1737, and the Ottaiani's pretensions to the title would seem to have played a role in the preparation of this chart. - Some brownstaining and ink corrosion; slight edge defects professionally repaired. Residue of the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872).

Totius Europæ Littora Novissimè edita. Pascaert vertoonende alle de See-custen van Europa.

1745 - Amsterdam, R. & J. Ottens, 1745. coloured. Two sheets conjoined as issued, total 495 x 890mm. Very fine condition. De Wit's famous chart of Europe, orientated with north to the right, with two large cartouches and an inset map of the Eastern Mediterranean. After the death of De Wit and his son the chart plates were bought by Louis Renard, who issued them with his own text. He corrected each plate (adding part of the Greenland coast here), apparently intending the atlas to be used at sea. Reiner and Josua Ottens re-issued Renard's atlas in 1739 with a French text, and again in 1745 with a Dutch text and their names added to the plates for the first time. A final edition, published in 1802 by the Widow of G.Hulst van Keulen, ended the long and distinguished career of this plate. KOEMAN: Ren 3.

- Original edition, quite rare. Title page in red and black. Binding on half basane red end eighteenth. Dos to decorated nerves of lean and fatty nets. Title of brown morocco piece. Missing lower Cap, and lacks a leather band along the upper mors. Friction. A brown waterstain at the center of 144-145 slips. Roman to satirical keys upon the period of the Regency which followed the death of Louis XIV and the early years of reign of Louis XV. Under the misnomer's Memoirs, it comes of an oriental narrative, narrating all events in France and Europe since the death of Louis XIV, actual names being hidden behind the Oriental names. We shall see for the first time trace the history of iron mask. The book had such repercussion that even years later, the families involved demanded the Government under the Restoration its blacklisting. The author was, he goes from either, imprisoned in the Bastille when publishing. - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale, assez rare.
