Patent of nobility donated by Maximilian III Joseph, Elector of Bavaria (1727-1777), to Philipp (von) Paret for his services as a Lieutenant of the Walloon Dragoon Regiment ('Wallonischen Dragoner Regiment').

      - Bavaria, Munich, d.d. 7 September 1745. Folio. 35x25cm. Full red velvet with worn yellow silk ribbons, front cover a little worn. Bound with black and yellow wire, cut off where the seal was attached, which is missing. (12) pages on vellum. Good condition. Manuscript, calligraphic text with handpainted coat-of-arms in colour and the original signature of Maximilian III Joseph. No seal present. This patent of nobility was issued by Maximilian III Joseph in his first year as Elector of Bavaria, having succeeded his father in January 1745 and at the time of the Austrian War of Succession (1740-1748). Philipp Paret served as a lieutenant in the Walloon Dragoon Regiment ('Wallonischen Dragoner Regiment') and earned his nobility and coat-of-arms most likely in the Second Silesian War (1744-1745) for war efforts described in the charter to have taken place in Bohemia, Bavaria and in other regions. He is mentioned as a couragious and loyal soldier ('Kriegsmann') and is hencefoth entitled to call himself and all his siblings 'Von Paret'. H3

Paris, Ch. J. B. Delespine, 1745. - Large 4to (203 x 260 mm). (6), LVIII, 254, (2) pp. Title-page printed in red and black. With an engraved headpiece. Contemporary full calf, spine rebacked and gilt to style. Leading edges gilt, all edges sprinkled in red. Marbled endpapers. Extremely rare pilot guide to the East Indies, reduced to a single quarto volume from the author's great "Neptune Oriental", published simultaneously. One of the greatest maritime atlases in the history of French cartography, the "Neptune" was devoted to exotic regions (the Middle East including the Gulf, the African coasts, the Indian Ocean and East Indies, Southeast Asia, parts of the Chinese coast, and the Pacific islands). It was compiled by Jean-Baptiste-Nicolas-Denis d'Après de Mannevillette (1707-80), hydrographer to the French Navy, supported by the French East India Company and the Académie des Sciences. "It was at once hailed as a major achievement and welcomed by navigators throughout the world" (Cat. Nat. Mar. Mus.). Of the present text-only reduction, OCLC lists no more than nine copies worldwide, only one of which in the the U.S. (University of Chicago). - Corners bumped; modern spine gilt in 18th-century style. A good, wide-margined copy. Provenance: 1) From the library of Sir Francis Lindley Wood, 2nd Baronet, of Barnsley (1771-1846), with his bookplate on the pastedown. 2) By descent to his son Charles Wood, 1st Viscount Halifax (1800-85), sometime Chancellor of the Exchequer, with handwritten ownership on the flyleaf. As President of the Board of Control of the English East India Company, Sir Charles Wood was instrumental in spreading education in India. 3) Acquired from the Portuguese trade.         A TREATISE OF ALL SORTS OF FOODS, BOTH ANIMAL AND VEGETABLE: ALSO OF DRINKABLES

London: Printed for T. Osborne, 1745. Fourth Printing in English n. This is apparently the fourth appearance (but issued before the "second edition") of the first English translation of the "Traité des Alimens" by the chemist and physician Louis Lemery (1677-1743), physician to the king of France, member of the Royal Academy, and son of the famous pharmacist and chemist Nicholas Lemery. Originally published in Paris in 1702 and first printed in English two years later, the work is divided into three sections, the first on the effects on one's constitution of various fruits, vegetables, and spices; the second on flesh, fowl, and fish; and the final section on drink. Lemery believes that what one eats is a key to health and that moderation and a balanced diet are advised (although he qualifies this by noting that our earliest ancestors were vegetarians and healthier for being so). Perhaps addressing a contemporaneous culinary preference of which we are unaware, he cautions against overindulgence in frog meat, and he comes out in favor of water and tea as beverages. Wine is also healthful when taken in moderation, and the same is true of coffee and chocolate, although he warns that excesses will cause sleeplessness. After the first edition in English of 1704, Maclean lists "another edition" in the same year issued by the same publisher, then a 1706 printing, then our edition, which adds to Lemery's text "an introduction treating of foods in general." Little is known about the Dr. Daniel Hay except that he translated this book; the Wellcome catalogue guesses that he was born in 1669 (see Volume III, 226).. 171 x 108 mm. (6 3/4 x 4 1/4"). xii, 372 pp., [12] leaves.Translated from the French by D[aniel] Hay, M.D. Fourth Printing in English. Contemporary sprinkled calf, covers with double gilt border, raised bands flanked by double gilt rules (expertly rebacked, retaining backstrip and original label). Woodcut headpieces and tailpieces. Approbation leaf with perforated stamp and inked accession number of the Spokane Public Library (the book consigned to Christie's East and sold at its 12 October 2000 auction). Vicaire, p. 514; Maclean, p. 89; Oxford, p. 49; Cagle 822; Bitting, pp. 281-82; Gabler, p. 165. Corners and edges a bit rubbed, covers with small stains and a few marks, but the carefully restored binding solid, generally well preserved, and certainly pleasing. Title page with overall browning (apparently from protracted exposure to light while on display), a little browning and foxing in second half of volume, but still an excellent copy internally, the text almost entirely fresh and very clean, and with few signs of use.

Paris, Philippe Buache, 1745. - Hand-coloured engraved map (635 x 505 mm). A fine example of Philippe Buache's edition of Guillaume de l'Isles highly detailed map of the region centered on the Red Sea. The map extends west to include Sicily, the Southeastern Mediterreanean, Barbaria, Nigritie, and a Guinea on the West Coast of Africa. To the east, the map includes the Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf of Aden and the Kingdom of Ajan and Dadel. De l'Isle's maps provided the first truly scientific mapping of the regions covered, showing the flamboyant Dutch style of illustrations and adopting a highly detailed and decorative approach to the printed map. The result is a combination of spectacular detail and accuracy, not approached by the Dutch or any other 17th Century map makers. The detail in this map reflects this Renaissance of style and accuracy. Tibbetts 199. Cf. Al-Qasimi 268 (Paris ed. 1707).

        Roma. Rom

Molto rara. Bibliografia: Tooley 275. The iconographic model of this view is the engraving printed by Georg Baltazar Probst in 1730, after Bernard Werner’s drawing. As usual, the view is not reliable on an architectonical point of view, for it refers to the classical nordic style, in which the multitude of domes, bell towers and high poles ends in hollow covers, typical of Mitteleuropean cities. Johann C. Hafner (1668-1754) was engraver and printer, he worked in Vienna; some of his works have been realized between 1720 and 1730, while the series from which the present work has been taken has been realized between 1745 and 1750. Copperplate, two plates printed on two sheets, joined together in the past, in excellent condition. Very rare.

A Collection of Voyages and Travels, Consisting of Authentic Writers in our own Tongue, which have not before been collected in English, or have only been abridged in other Collections. And continued with Others of Note, that have published Histories, Voyages, Travels, Journals or Discoveries in other Nations and Languages, relating to Any Part of the Continent of Asia, Africa, America, Europe, or the Islands thereof, from the earliest Account to the present Time. Digested According to the Parts of the World, to which they particularly relate. And with great Variety of Cuts, Prospects, Ruins, Maps, and Charts. Complied from the curious and valuable Library of the late Earl of Oxford.

Thomas Osborne, London 1745 - Two volumes, folio, with 37 maps and 16 plates (many folding), and a letterpress folding table; a handsome set in the original panelled calf, decorated in gilt, sympathetically rebacked by Aquarius. A fine set, with excellent early provenance, of one of the most handsome voyage compendiums of the eighteenth century. These two volumes are known as the 'Harleian' or 'Oxford' voyages', being compiled in some part from the unpublished manuscripts in the collection of the Earl of Oxford. Although separately published by Thomas Osborne at a later date, they are generally considered the logical supplement to the travel anthology first published in 1704 by John and Awnsham Churchill. Since they publish material not included in the first six volumes of Churchill's anthology (including Galvano, Drake, Le Maire, de Mont and numerous others), they form a natural complement to the earlier collection. Osborne, or an associate, has contributed a disarmingly eloquent introductory discourse on travel, foreign government and the like, filled with choice aphorisms such as "in your travel you shall have great help to attain knowledge, which is not only the most excellent thing in man, but the very excellency of man".The first volume principally deals with the Near and Middle East, while the second volume covers North America, India, East Asia and the East Indies and Africa. The Chinese content is substantial and includes Baudier's History of the Court of the King of China and Escalante's Account of the Empire of China. The well printed plates are derived from a range of sources, while the maps are principally after the work of Dutch cartographer Herman Moll. The frontispiece to the second volume is a magnificent folding map titled "A Chart of the East Indies", while Moll's famous map of the trade winds (originally printed for Knapton's voyages of Dampier) here re-appears as a considerably enlarged folding chart measuring 200 x 540 mm.A printer's error makes a jump in pagination between pp. 262-410 in the first volume. Although this gap is not noted in the bibliographies listed, comparison with two copies in American university libraries shows that this mis-pagination is the norm. Provenance: Thomas Dampier, Bishop of Rochester (veteran bibliophile and friend of Thomas Dibdin; no relation of the buccaneer; his library was reputed to be one of the finest in England), with Dampier's armorial bookplates; presumably William Cavendish (who bought Dampier's library en-bloc after his death for the then enormous sum of £10,000); Rodney Davidson, with bookplates. A little foxing of the preliminaries, fore-edge margin of the frontispiece to the first volume thumbed and a little chipped (now well laid down); yet an excellent set overall.         Carte Des Antilles Francoises Et Des Isles Voisines; Incredible map of the Lesser Antilles (Grenada upside down)

Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 24.5" x 20.75" This wonderful map of the Lesser Antilles in the West Indies dates to circa 1745. Based on the earlier map by Delisle, the map covers from Guadeloupe to Grenada and includes the islands of Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Barbados. Incredibly detailed, several towns and rivers are identified, as are some coastal features. Curiously, Grenada is depicted upside down and situated more to the west and north than its actual location. This can be attributed to the manusctipt map by Petit, which was the original source for the Delisle map. Petit might have shifted the islands simply to fit them all on the same sheet. The position of Grenada would eventually be corrected by Buache in the 1760 resissue. The map is in good condition with minor wear and toning along the original centerfold. Minor offsetting and foxing. The Amsterdam publishing firm of Covens and Mortier (1665-c. 1862) was established by Cornelius Mortier and Jean Covens. Together, the two republished the works of great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, De Wit, and Ottens. The firm quickly grew into one of the largest and most prolific Dutch publishing outfits of the 18th century and enjoyed a long and prolific life under a variety of names.Guillaume Delisle (1675-1726) was a legendary French cartographer known for introducing a new standard of accuracy into 17th-century mapmaking. He was one of the cartographers who propelled the French school of map-making away from Dutch dominance. The French school emphasized science and accuracy over ornament. His family took over the business and kept publishing maps well into the late 18th century. He used astronomical observations to determine locations and draw more precise coastlines. He continually updated his maps and dispelled prevailing geographical inaccuracies throughout his life.
