First collected edition of the mathematical, philosophical and philological treatises by Newton edited with a biography by Johann Castillioneus, and containing some items not easily available elsewhere. These three volumes formed part of a hybrid set of eight volumes of Newton's works consisting of the three volumes of the Geneva Principia (1739-42), the 1740 Optice, Castillioneus's own edition of the Arithmetica universalis (1761), and his three volumes of Opuscula which are usually found separate. Castillioneus (1708-1791) was born in Tuscany, studied mathematics and law at Pisa, then moved to Switzerland where he remained until 1751. He spent 13 years at the University of Utrecht before finally settling in 1764 at the Berlin Academy of Frederick the Great. All the works in the Opuscula are in Latin whatever the original language and each separate work or essay is preceded by its own title page mostly with the date of its first publication. Contents of the three volumes as follows. 1) Mathematica: De analysi (1711); Methodus fluxionum (1736); De quadratura (1706); Enumeratio (1706); Methodus differentialis (1716); exerpts from correspondence with John Wallis, John Chamberlayne, Abbe Conti, John Collins and Henry Oldenburg, including the texts of the Epistola prior and the Epistola posterior as they appeared in Commercium epistolicum. 2) Philosophica: De mundi systemate (1731); Lectiones opticae (1729); papers from the Philosophical Transactions (numbers 80-5, 86, 88, 96, 97, 110, 121, 128 on the subject of light and colour); De natura acidorum (1736); Scala graduum caloris (1701). 3) Philologica: Brevia Cronica (1728); Chronologia veterum regnorum emendata (1728); Paper on Chronology from PT (1725); Ad Danielis profetae vaticinia (1737); Dissertatio de sacro judaeorum cubito ((1737).         LA BATRACOMIOMACHIA DI OMERO

Venezia: Stampata da Gio Batista Albrizzi Q. Gir, 1744. FIRST EDITION y. This carefully edited, skillfully translated, and beautifully printed polyglot edition of a famous classical poem is still in the rustic paper wrapper into which it was loosely sewn shortly after it came off the press--an incredible survival. Moss says that this edition is "held in considerable estimation," and according to Martineau and Robison, Lavagnoli took pains in researching and editing the Latin and Greek texts, demonstrating "the distinctive 18th century combination of scholarship and humour." Although many scholars now doubt whether Homer was the true author of this work, the Homeric association has largely stood the test of time due to its early attribution by the Romans. The reasons for such an attribution are obvious, the poem being a satiric version of the "Iliad," substituting a war between the King of Frogs and the King of Mice for that of the Trojans and the Greeks. With the mice on the verge of victory, Athena and Zeus become embroiled in the conflict, eventually sending an army of crabs to bolster the frogs' depleted forces. This edition is beautifully produced, featuring large margins, a pleasing typeface, rich impressions, and charming images. The great Florentine landscape painter, Francesco Zuccarelli (1702-1788) was renowned particularly for his bucolic country scenes, like that in the frontispiece here. According to Benezit, he was "very popular with the public, had powerful patrons, and [had] his paintings . . . reproduced by the best engravers of his day." The vignettes that follow, though unsigned, are well executed and contain delightful details relating to the story. The present copy has retained nearly all of its original appeal, remaining in a remarkable state, especially considering that it is housed in a binding obviously meant to be temporary.. 240 x 164 mm. (9 1/2 x 6 1/2"). [54], lxv, [7] pp.Edited and translated into Italian by Antonio Lavagnoli. FIRST EDITION. Original "alla rustica" paper wrapper, flat spine with ink titling and the number "77," edges untrimmed. In a dark blue buckram clamshell box with morocco spine label. With frontispiece engraved by Giuseppe Patrini after Francesco Zuccarelli, vignette on title page, 11 engraved vignette head- and tail-pieces, and seven engraved initials. Front pastedown with label of Libreria Antiquaria Mediolanum. Text in Italian, Latin, and Greek. Moss I, 539-40; Martineau and Robison "Glory of Venice" 169. Spine a little worn and with a one-inch split in the middle of the front joint, head of spine bumped, with short tears at head of joints, covers somewhat browned and with a few small inkspots, but the fragile original binding remarkably well preserved. Sewing slightly loose, a few negligible stains to the interior (all but one marginal), a half-inch tear to margin of one leaf, otherwise A FINE COPY INTERNALLY, entirely clean and fresh with generous margins.         An authentic narrative of the success of tar-water, in curing a great number and variety of distempers, with remarks. And occasional papers relative to the subject. To which are subjoyned two letters from the author of Siris.

Uncommon first edition: An impressive collection of testimonial letters describing the curative powers of tar-water in cases of asthma, influenza, scurvy and scorbutic disorders, gout, rheumatism, consumptive coughs, and even smallpox -- offering a mass of anecdotal information on general ailments, standard treatments of the time (what the patients took or did before they discovered tar-water), and what was considered an intolerable condition as opposed to simply inconvenient. This volume was compiled by one of the founding members of the Royal Dublin Society and inspired by Bishop Berkeley's 1744 publication Siris, Philosophical Reflexions and Inquiries Concerning the Virtues of Tar-water (which praise of tar-water as a universal panacea enraged doctors throughout Great Britain, resulting in a flurry of published debate); it makes several references to Siris, and concludes with two letters from Berkeley, featuring his instructions on how to make the best tar-water and use it most effectively. The printer was Margaret Rhames, scion of a prominent Dublin printing family. WorldCat and ESTC locate only four U.S. institutional holdings of this edition, which preceded the London first.

Kupferstichkarte. Maßstab in graphischer Form (Lieues Communes de France, lieues de Brabant. [Ca. 1:115'000]).

Paris, chez [Etienne Louis] Crépy 1744. - 15 doppelblattgrosse Einzelkartenblätter in Kupferstich (je ca. 47x65 cm). ?         Phytobasanos. Cui accessit vita Fabi et Lynceorum notitia adnotationesque in phytobasanon Iano Planco Ariminensi auctore.

I.P. Aere, et Petri Caietani Viviani,, Mediolani, 1744 - Cm. 29, pp. (2) lii, 134 (2). [Madrid, 1744. Folio. Dbd. Contemporary manuscript annotations on top of first page and in margins of text. Old folds. Moderate dampstaining in top margins. A good copy. A rare printed decree by Philip V, King of Spain, regarding the reconstruction of the Casa de Moneda in Santiago following the earthquake that devastated that city in 1730. Detailed orders concerning the construction and operation of the Casa de Moneda and related matters regarding the processing of gold are also provided. It is noted that the reconstruction of the Santiago mint will ensure that the gold will not need to be sent to Lima for processing, as was the case after the earthquake. Dated Oct. 1, 1743, the decree was printed in Madrid for distribution to officials in the Council of the Indies and in Santiago. A printed note (dated Madrid, March 22, 1744) at the bottom of the text indicates that the text is a copy of the original which remains with the Secretary of Peru. A rare printed decree regarding the institution of the Casa de Moneda in Santiago. Not in EUROPEAN AMERICANA. OCLC records only a single copy, at the Chilean National Library. MEDINA (BHC) 365.         Vida de la esclarecida virgen, dulçissima esposa de N. Señor Jesu Christo, Santa Ines de Monte-Policiano.

Puebla: Por la viuda de Miguel de Ortega y Bonilla 4to. [26] ff., 261, [1] pp., [1] f.. 1744 Sole edition of the sole publication of a Dominican who served his order as the Prior of the Province of San Miguel y Santos Angeles of Mexico, and => the sole biography of this saint written and published in the New World. It was posthumously published with additions by Fr. Juan de Villa Sanchez and is a biography of Saint Agnes of Montepulciano, a Dominican prioress in 13th-century Tuscany, known as a miracle worker during her lifetime. Her amazing and saintly life is meant to be a model for the Dominican nuns of mid-18th-century Mexico. And it should be noted that one of the Dominican nunneries in Puebla, where this work was published, was the "Convento de Santa Ines de Monte-Policiano." The work ends with a brief biography of the author: "Breve noticia de la religiosa vida y virtudes de . . . Antonio Lopes Cordero" (pp. 226–60). The whole is printed principally in roman with some italic, with woodcut initials and a nice woodcut coat of arms of the dedicatee, Vicente Bueno de la Borbolla, who at the time of publication was the alguacil mayor of Puebla and would soon thereafter be the governor and military leader of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon. Provenance: Ownership inscription of Juana de Dios Gutierrez, dated 1780, on front free endpaper; marcas de fuego of the Mercedarian Colegio de San Miguel de Belén de la Ciudad of Mexico City. Searches of NUC, WorldCat, and CCILA locate only five copies in U.S. libraries. Contemporary limp vellum with remnants of rawhide ties; staining in margins of early and later leaves, foremargin of last leaf a little tattered, dog-earing pp. 239 to end. Marcas de fuego on top and bottom edges of closed volume.

Evidence of readership: Several instances of corrections and marginalia in Stuart's hand, including two substantive annotations; occasional underlining. Period-style quarter calf and marbled paper–covered sides, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label, raised bands, and blind-tooled compartment decorations. First leaf of contents with closed tear at center; one leaf with tear from outer margin, not touching text.         ALLERNEUESTER GEOGRAPHISCH UND TOPOGRAPHISCHER SCHAU- PLATZ, VON AFRICA UND OST-INDIEN

Wilhermsdorf & Nuremberg: C. Tetschner, 1744. Large oblong folio. Contemporary vellum, lettered in gilt on spine. Soiling and minor scratches. A few leaves and minor soiling and dampstains. Else a very good copy, with wide margins, entirely unsophisticated. A very rare work, seldom found complete. The large, lavish, and handsome engravings depict the ports and bases of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Asia and Africa, primarily based on original drawings by the author. Heydt (1702-50) was a German engraver and traveller who worked in the Far East from 1734 to 1741. The single most illustrated place is Batavia (modern day Jakarta), the main base of the VOC in Asia, with forty- seven plates devoted to the port, city, and buildings. Another large group is dedicated to Ceylon, and about twenty depict different locations in the East Indies (including fine views of Malacca, with a city plan, Sumatra, the Moluccas and other locations). A series of plates shows scenes at the Cape of Good Hope. There is also a plate showing Nagasaki in Japan and another of Ormus in the Persian Gulf. Besides these there are several maps, included a double-hemisphere map of the World, Ceylon, the East Indies showing northern Australia, Africa, and the north Atlantic. The fine plates are one of the richest iconographic depictions of the Dutch settlements and colonies in Asia and Africa, all beautifully drawn and engraved. MENDELSSOHN I, pp.700-10. BELL H172. LANDWEHR, VOC BIBLIOGRAPHY 469 (with a complete list of plates).

The Christian Patter; The Imitation of Jesus Christ - Thomas Kempis

Hardcover. Good. London: Printed 1744. Germantown: Re-Printed by Christopher Sowr, 1749, 1749. First American edition of this book of Christian mystical thought, which has historically appealed to Catholics and Protestants alike. Indeed, it has been "the most widely read devotional manual apart from the Bible, perhaps even surpassing the influence of such books as Pilgrim's Progress and St. Augustine's Confessiones - this is at least partly due to the great simplicity of its style and its freedom from intellectualism or theological dogmatism." - PMM. "The Christian Pattern" was the title used both by John Wesley in 1735, and by George Stanhope, dean of Canterbury in 1698, for their versions. Although rhymes taken from the work had been published in Germantown in 1742 under the title of "Das Kleine ABC", this is the first American edition of the work, as adapted by a "Female Hand" which has yet to be identified First American edition

[Op. 1]. Six Sonatas for two Violins with a Through Bass for the Harpsicord or Violoncello. [Violin parts only]

London: I. Walsh. [1744]. Folio. Disbound. Violino primo: 1f. (title including "St. Martini [?Sammartini] of Milan"), [1] (blank), 2-13, [i] (blank) pp.; Violino secondo: 1f. (title), [1] (blank), 2-13, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. Publisher's catalogue advertising six items (no. i by Lampugnani, no. vi by Pasquali) to foot of title, with no ascriptions. In A major, B-flat major, A major, D major, E-flat major, and G major, with secondary numbering "No. 37" to "No. 42" in ink. Basso lacking (substituted from another edition, see below). Slightly foxed; title of Violino primo and edges soiled; leaves of Violino Secondo detached. [?]First Edition. BUC p. 593. RISM L518 and B ii p. 363 (2 copies only in the U.S., at Colonial Williamsburg and San Francisco State College). WorldCat (additional copies at Carleton University and the Eastman School of Music). It is doubtful whether Sammartini had any share in this op. 1 collection. According to Bathia Churgin in Grove Music Onlikne, the third sonata (in A major) has been traditionally considered as Sammartini's work; the absence of ascriptions in the edition and the fact that the later edition (RISM L519) credits all six works to Lampugnani, however, do little to support any claim to Sammartini's authorship. With: LAMPUGNANI, Giovanni Battista [Op. 1]. Six Sonatas for two Violins with a Through Bass for the Harpsicord or Violoncello... Opera Prima. London: I. Walsh [ca. 1748]. [Basso part only]. Folio. Disbound. 1f. (title), 8 pp. Engraved. With bass figures. Lampugnani listed as sole author. Publisher's catalogue printed to foot of title (listing titles different from those included in the publisher's catalogue described above) including Willem De Fesch's 12 sonatas for flute (1748). Soiled, especially at upper margin; minimally foxed. A later edition, probably from plates of the first. BUC p. 593. RISM L519 (3 copies only in the U.S., at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Virginia, and the Library of Congress). WorldCat (1 copy, at the University of Western Ontario). For doubts about Sammartini's authorship see the comment above. With: LAMPUGNANI, Giovanni Battista and Giovanni Battista SAMMARTINI [Op. 2]. A Second Set of Six Sonatas for two Violins with a Through Bass for the Harpsicord or Violoncello... London: I. Walsh [ca. 1750]. [Parts]. Folio. Disbound. Violino primo: 1f. (title including "St. Martini [?Sammartini] of Milan"), [1] (blank), 2-13, [i] (blank) pp.; Violino secondo: 1f. (title), 11, [i] (blank) pp.; Basso: 1f. (title), [i] (blank), 2-10 pp. Engraved. With bass figures. Publisher's catalogue printed to foot ot title (same as above). Printed ascriptions in caption titles of Violino primo: nos. i (B-flat major), iii (F major), and v (B-flat major) to Sammartini; nos. ii (G major), iv (C major), and vi (D major) to Lampugnani. Sammartini identified as "Sigr. Martini" (or "Martino") in caption titles. Secondary numbering of sonatas as "87" to "92" in ink. Some soiling along spine; slightly foxed; small stains to title of Violino Primo; most leaves detached; repair to title of Violino secondo part. A later edition. BUC p. 593. RISM L524 and B ii p. 103 (dated "c.1750"; 4 copies only in the U.S., at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Virginia, San Francisco State College, and the Library of Congress). WorldCat (copies at the University of Western Ontario and Yale University). In the op. 2 collection, the sonata no. 1 is most probably by Antonio Brioschi (1725- 1750) (see Jenkins-Churgin, App. D 15). The other ascriptions are correct; the two remaining Sammartini sonatas are identical with his symphonies listed by Jenkins-Churgin as nos. 37 and no. 66b. The present edition dated according to Jenkins-Churgin p. 70. . Lampugnani, perhaps best known as an opera composer, he also wrote instrumental music and was an accomplished harpsichordist and singing teacher. "He... made the acquaintance of J.C. Bach and Padre Martini; Bach mentioned him in a letter to Martini written in 1759... When Mozart was in Milan to finish his Mitridate, rè di Ponto in 1770, Lampugnani helped rehearse the singers, including the prima donna Antonia Bernasconi. During the first three performances he played second harpsichord and in subsequent performances directed the orchestra himself." Michael F. Robinson et al in Grove Music Online. "In general [Sammartini's] chamber works are more lyrical, more ornamental and more intricate in rhythm than [his] orchestral music... The string trios for two violins and bass form the largest and most important group, and were extremely popular, as the many surviving copies indicate. The relation between the instrumental parts (especially the violins) varies considerably from the complete domination of the first violin to frequent dialogue and imitation, none of the sonatas being consistently imitative in late Baroque fashion." Bathia Churgin in Grove Music Online.
