Breitkopf,, Leipzig. 1744 - Mit gest. Tit.-Vign., mehreren Textvign. u. 5 ganzs. An account of the life of Mr. Richard Savage. Son of the Earl of Rivers.

London: J. Roberts, 1744. Octavo in fours, without half title and final advertisement; in nineteenth-century half calf with marbled paper sides. First edition, last page in state with single-line erratum. Like Rothschild's copy the pages 185 and 186 are misnumbered 179 and 180.Savage, 'an impostor, a libeller and something of a ruffian' (CHEL) had died in Bristol prison in August 1743 and the same month Johnson announced that he was preparing his friend's biography. Savage and Johnson had endured the poverty of their youth together, and this was Johnson's even-handed tribute, 'a work of remarkable and varied interest' (CHEL). He later included it, with only minor changes, in The Lives of the Poets. Professional paper repairs to gutter for first 15 pages, joints starting, head of spine chipped and some rubbing to extremities, but a good copy.

Poems attempted in the style of Milton. By Mr. John Philips, Student of Christ-Church, Oxon. With his life by Dr Sewell

London printed for E. Curll, in Covent-Garden, MDCCXLIV. [1744] 12mo: xxx,42;72pp, with frontispiece portrait of the poet, frontispiece to the separately paginated Cyder, woodcut head- and tailpieces. Contemporary speckled calf, covers framed with double fillets in gilt, spine with five raised bands ruled in gilt, recent red morocco lettering piece gilt, edges speckled red. A Fine?indeed exceptional?copy. Foxon, p. 570. Fine Tenth Edition (but first under this title), collecting The Splendid Shilling; Blenheim, An Ode (in Latin and English), and, most importantly, Cyder?A Poem in Two Books (Fourth Edition, printed for J. and R. Tonson, and S. Draper, 1744). Many of Philips's poems, including his first, the Splendid Shilling (which The Tatler commended as "the finest Burlesque Poem in the British Language"), were composed in Miltonic blank verse. "Philips's greatest poem, the two-book georgic Cyder (1708), begun at Oxford, celebrates his native land (and in particular Herefordshire) with a combination of accurate knowledge of apples and cider making and a 'sketch of our National History.' The botanist Philip Miller told [Dr.] Johnson that 'there were many books written on the same subject in prose, which do not contain so much truth as that poem.' . . . Philips taught Pope, who drew on Cyder in Windsor Forest, how to use Paradise Lost for un-Miltonic purposes, and to suggest that paradise might still be found in England's green and pleasant land."

DSB 3, 107. *****. In-4. Collation : (10), 292, CCXXXV, (17) pp., 14 planches h.-t.         Methodus inveniendi lineas curvas maximi minimive proprietate gaudentes.

Lausanne & Geneve: Marcum-Michaelem Bosquet & Socios, 1744. First edition of "Euler's most valuable contribution to mathematics in which he developed the concept of the calculus of variations." (Norman). "This work displays an amount of mathematical genius seldom rivaled." (Cajori). "The book brought him immediate fame and recognition as the greatest living mathematician." (Kline). ?Horblit 28; Evans 9; Dibner 111; Sparrow 60; Norman 731. "Starting with several problems solved by Johann and Jakob Bernoulli, Euler was the first to formulate the principal problems of the calculus of variations and to create general methods for their solution. In Methodus inveniendi lineas curvas ... he systematically developed his discoveries of the 1730's (1739, 1741). The very title of the work shows that Euler widely employed geometric representations of functions as flat curves . Here he introduced, using different terminology, the concepts of function and variation and distinguished between problems of absolute extrema and relative extrema, showing how the latter are reduced to the former . (DSB). "In this book Euler extended known methods of the calculus of variations to form and solve differential equations for the general problem of optimizing single-integral variational quantities. He also showed how these equations could be used to represent the positions of equilibrium of elastic and flexible lines, and formulated the first rigorous dynamical variational principle." (Craig G. Fraser). "Basel had achieved enough glory in the history of mathematics through being the home of the Bernoullis, but she doubled her glory, when she produced Léonard Euler." (Smith). Craig G. Fraser in: Landmarks Writings in Western Mathematics, chapter 12; Cajori, History of Mathematics, p. 234; Smith, History of Mathematics, pp. 520-21; Kline, Mathematical Thought from Ancient to Modern Times, p. 579. 4to (236 x 190 mm), pp. [2] [1] 2-322 [1] and five engraved folding plates.         A Map of the Discoveries Made by Captn. Willm. Dampier in the Roebuck in 1699.

London: John Harris, 1744. Engraved chart measuring 245 x 410 mm. (sheet size). The fine Bowen map of William Dampier's discoveries along the Papuan coastline and adjacent islands. Dampier sailed in the Roebuck in January of 1699, landing in Shark Bay, Western Australia in July of that year, before going on to explore the Papuan coastline in some detail. This map charts the path of the Roebuck from Timor to the large islands to the northeast of New Guinea named New Britain by Dampier. The voyage of the Roebuck is one of the most significant expeditions to the region, but was disastrous for Dampier, especially after the vessel, rotten and leaking badly for much of the voyage, finally foundered at Ascension Island. This fine map was engraved by Emanuel Bowen (1694-1767), one of the pre-eminent English cartographic printers of his era and geographer to both King George II and Louis XV. Bowen drew upon a wide range of materials to ensure the accuracy of his work, attracting commissions from many of the leading hydrographers of the day. Widely respected for the skill, accuracy and beauty of his maps, 'Bowen's contribution to eighteenth-century world and British atlases was substantial' (ODNB). Bowen is famous for his map of the Southern Continent published by Harris in 1744, the same anthology from which the present map is taken.Bowen's work was characterised by its ornate rococo engraving and detailed engaging text passages that surrounded the cartographic detail. This map of Captain Dampier's discoveries is no exception, and features a section of lively text on the inhabitants of New Guinea and speculations of the wealth and wonders awaiting future explorers of the region. One section reads 'The inhabitants are generally speaking Blacks, but there is a Nation of Whites seated in one part of it whom some have suspected to be a remnant of the Ten Tribes of Israel, who were carried into captivity by the Assyrians... the inhabitants of the Moluccas are known to trade with the people of this Country for Gold and Spices which sufficiently demonstrates that it is well worth the discovering.'. Some browning yet very good.

Thus the work presents several of his most influential texts. The three volumes of "Opuscula Mathematica" are part of a hybrid set of in all 8 volumes of the first collected works of Isaac Newton. The hybrid set was published between 1739-1761 and also consists of "Geneva Principia" , 3 vols.

Four sheet wall map drawn by Chiesa and Gambarini, etched by Carlo Nolli & Giovan Battista Piranesi. Pope Benedict XIV commissioned engineers Andrea Chiesa and Bernardo Gamberini to prepare a survey of the full course of the Tiber River in order to anticipate problems of flooding and to explore the possibilities for navigation. In addition to the narrative which details this information, there are two maps. The smaller of the maps shows a more detailed view of the Tiber as it passes through Rome. The larger of the two maps, engraved by Giambattista Nolli, is included in four contiguous plates. It includes two vignettes of ruins and many profiles of altitudes of the river. There are also small views of several bridges and other features such as Ponte Molle, Ponte Sant'Angelo with Castel Sant'Angelo, Ponte dei Quattro Capi and Ponte Ferraro. It was only in 1939, that Lamerberto Donati identified that these unsigned engravings in the the Pianta del Corso del Tevere were the work of Piranesi. Etching, 4 loose sheets, very good condition.         CHILE – AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF 4 MID-18TH CENTURY ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT ROYAL CEDULAS FEATURING INSTRUCTIONS TO THE GOVERNOR OF CHILE REGARDING THE FOUNDATION OF NEW CITIES AND TOWNS, ENTITLED ON ENCLOSING PAPER

Madrid: Buen Retiro Palace 1744 1744 and 1749 - Manuscript: 4 letters in a neat secretarial hand (total 32 pp., 8 pp. blank), brown ink on watermarked laid paper (12 x 8 inches / 31 x 21 cm), tied with original silk thread, singed by the king and his secretary, with notarial countersignatures (Very Good condition, clean and bright with minor worming with no significant loss). A historically important collection of original contemporary official certified letters, dated 1744 and 1749, from the Spanish King to José Antonio Manso de Velasco, Governor of Chile, containing detailed instructions for the foundation and reestablishment of many cities and towns, including the rebuilding of Concepción. This important collection of official manuscript Royal Spanish correspondence contains four officially certified letters from the King of Spain (variously Felipe V and Ferdinand VI) to José Antonio Manso de Velasco, the hard-charging Governor of Chile (who by the time of the last letter had become the Viceroy of Peru), with the first three of the letters dated 1744, and the last letter dated 1749. These royal instructions, or cedulas, concern the foundation and organization of new cities and towns in Chile, some of which are today major centers; as well as plans for the reestablishment of cities that were destroyed by earthquakes, notably the re-founding of Concepción. Taken together, the letters are important original documents of critical decisions that had a transformative and enduring impact upon the development of Chile. The letters are written in a neat secretarial hand and all are singed for the king as "Yo el Rey", plus secretarial signatures, officially witnessed with notarial countersignatures. On the enclosing paper they are entitled "Diferentes zedulas particualres sobre Poblaciones de Chile". While inscription on the sheaf alludes to 6 letters (numbered sequentially 53 to 58), it appears that only 3 of these letters (numbered 53, 55 and 58, alluding the correspondence record between the King and the Manso de Velasco in his role as Governor of Chile, all dated 1744), plus one letter that belonged the sequence of correspondence between the King and Manso de Velasco (dated 1749) when he served as Viceroy of Peru. Historical Background - During the 17th and 18th Centuries, the Captaincy General of Chile was a poor colonial province that offered little precious mineral wealth, yet always soaked up a fortune in military subsidies. When we refer the Chile of the time, the province essentially only consisted of what is the central portion of today’s Chile, extending from the Bio Bío River (just to the south of Concepción), in the south, up to he southern reaches of the Atacama Desert, in the north (plus a few enclaves outside of this area). Centered on the fertile Central Valley, its economy focused an agriculture, with some fishing and minor trade along the coasts. First settled by Spain in 1541, during the remainder of the 16th Century, Spanish settlement came to extend far to the south of the Bio Bío River into Araucanía, a region rich in gold. The Spanish built many fine cities and towns, such as Valdivia, and it seemed that the region would make Chile immensely wealthy, like a little version of Peru. However, this was not to be, as the native Mapuche Nation, a fierce and savvy military power, never accepted Spanish encroachment upon their lands. In 1598, they crushed Spanish forces at the ‘Disaster of Curalba’ (1598), killing Chile’s governor, annihilating the colony’s army and overrunning all of the Spanish settlements up to the Bio Bío River. This event has since been termed the ‘Destruction of the Seven Cities’ of Southern Chile, and apart from the enclaves of Valdivia and the island of Chiloé, Spain would not have a fixed presence in the region for another two centuries. By the beginning of the 17th Century, Chile was cut off from its main source of wealth, and faced massive and continual military expenditures. The southern boundary, ‘La Frontera’, along the Bio Bío River

"The first complete edition â?¦ included his posthumous remains and correspondence, with a life of the author founded on materials collected with abortive biographical designs by Burnet and Wotton, and embracing Boyle's unfinished narrative of his early years entitled 'An account of Philatretus during his Minority'" (DNB II, 1030). Birch's collection became the standard academic edition of Boyle's work for more than two centuries. Boyle's contribution to modern science cannot be understated. This work contains Boyle's most notable experiments that laid the foundation of modern chemistry, including: Boyle's Law; The Properties of Air and the Vacuum; the rejection of Aristotle and Paracelsus's views on matter in favor of a modern concept of elements, compounds and mixtures; atoms as the basis of matter; heat as mechanical movement; a continuation of Francis Bacon's principles of rational based experimental science; as well as many other experiments. Specifically, the works include: Boyle's air pressure experiment No. 17 in Spring of the Air showing a Torricellian apparatus and an air pump; Experiments Physio-Mechanical, Touching the Spring of the Air and its Effects, 1662, Boyle's Law; The Description of the Pneumatick Engin, and it's Use; etc. Fulton 240. Bibliotheca Sunderlandiana 1915. ESTC T4460. See Macclesfield, 2510. <br> Armorial book plate of the Right Honorable Francis Greville, Lord Brooke (of Warwick).         Methodus inveniendi lineas curvas maximi minimive proprietate gaudentes.

Lausanne & Geneve: Marcum-Michaelem Bosquet & Socios, 1744. First edition of ?Euler?s most valuable contribution to mathematics in which he developed the concept of the calculus of variations.? (Norman). ?This work displays an amount of mathematical genius seldom rivaled.? (Cajori). ?The book brought him immediate fame and recognition as the greatest living mathematician.? (Kline).<br/><br/> ?Horblit 28; Evans 9; Dibner 111; Sparrow 60; Norman 731.<br/><br/> ?Starting with several problems solved by Johann and Jakob Bernoulli, Euler was the first to formulate the principal problems of the calculus of variations and to create general methods for their solution. In <i>Methodus inveniendi lineas curvas ?</i> he systematically developed his discoveries of the 1730?s (1739, 1741). The very title of the work shows that Euler widely employed geometric representations of functions as flat curves . Here he introduced, using different terminology, the concepts of function and variation and distinguished between problems of absolute extrema and relative extrema, showing how the latter are reduced to the former . (DSB). <br/><br/> ?In this book Euler extended known methods of the calculus of variations to form and solve differential equations for the general problem of optimizing single-integral variational quantities. He also showed how these equations could be used to represent the positions of equilibrium of elastic and flexible lines, and formulated the first rigorous dynamical variational principle.? (Craig G. Fraser). <br/><br/> ?Basel had achieved enough glory in the history of mathematics through being the home of the Bernoullis, but she doubled her glory, when she produced Léonard Euler.? (Smith).<br/><br/> Craig G. Contemporary calf, boards with some scratched, corners worn, capitals chipped, binding still firm and unrestored, internally fine and clean.
