Perry, Charles
London: T. Woodward, C. Davis, and J. Shuckburgh, 1743. First edition. Folio, pp. xviii, [viii, subscribers], 440, 449-524 [mispaginated but complete], [4, index]; 33 engraved plates on 20 sheets, 7 folding. A very good copy bound in contemporary calf. Spine a modern reback. A little light spotting; plates in excellent condition. Charles Perry (d.1780), physician, travelled in Egypt, Greece, Syria and Turkey from 1739 to 1742. He dedicated this work to John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, a founding member of the Divan Club and Society of Dilettanti, whose support and patronage is evident in the names of subscribers found here, including Hans Slo[a]ne, Richard Pococke, and Horace Walpole. This work is particularly strong in its account of Egypt, and the finely executed plates depict a number of important sites. The author visited Constantinople, and his text includes a sketch history of the Ottoman Empire and a detailed account of the officers and officials of the Ottoman court. Perry includes a detailed account of the 1730 revolt in Constaninople, which saw a mob led by the Albanian Patrona Halil force the abdication of Sultan Ahmed III in favour of his nephew, who became Sultan Mahmud I. Perry likely relied on information supplied by the Earl of Sandwich, who had travelled to Constantinople shortly after the revolt, and had the opportunity to collect eyewitness accounts. In addition he was to encourage rebellion by the native Panamanians against the Spaniards, or by the Spanish colonists against their king” (N.A.M. Rodger for DNB). In May of 1741, the Wager was wrecked “on a desolate island off the coast of Chile in circumstances in which all discipline vanished. 1743. Engraved vignette on title & four folding engraved plates. 2 p.l., xxvi, [2], 186, [2] pp. 4to, cont. marbled calf (extremities a trifle worn, preliminary leaves a bit discolored), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: David l'aîné, 1743.First edition, and a fine copy, of d'Alembert's masterpiece on dynamics; this has become a scarce book on the market. "The Traité de dynamique, which has become the most famous of his scientific works, is significant in many ways. First, it is clear that d'Alembert recognized that a scientific revolution had occurred, and he thought that he was doing the job of formalizing the new science of mechanics...The Traité also contained the first statement of what is known as d'Alembert's principle. D'Alembert was, furthermore, in the tradition that attempted to develop mechanics without using the notion of force. Finally, it was long afterward said (rather simplistically) that in this work he resolved the famous vis viva controversy, a statement with just enough truth in it to be plausible."-D.S.B., I, p. 111-(& see pp. 111-13 for a full account of the work).Fine copy. From the library of Marchese Giulio Stanga Carlo Trecco (d. 1832), amateur mathematician and physicist who formed a large collection of scientific instruments, with his shelfmark label at head of spine.❧ En Français dans le Texte 147. BULKELEY, John; John CUMMINS.
Printed for Jacob Robinson, 1743. 8vo. xx, 220, 8 pp. Light foxing. Original full gilt-ruled calf; neatly rebacked to style, raised bands, red leather gilt-stamped spine label, corners showing. Very good. "This book is one of the principle accounts of the Wager, which was wrecked off the southern coast of Chile after rounding Cape Horn. Under the command of Captain Cheap, the Wager was one of Anson's fleet, which was on its way to harass the Spanish. After the wreck, gunner John Bulkeley and carpenter John Cummins conducted the mutinous part of the crew until the arrived safely in Rio de Janeiro. Much of the adventure and interest of the account is in the description of their travels passing through the Strait of Magellan in a longboat. There are two editions of 1743: the first, here, published by Jacob Robinson, giving the authors' names on the title page; the other, published by J. Twig, omitting the authors' names." - Hill (2004), 210. Evans 7859; Hill 210; Howgego B-186; Sabin 9108.

Glasgow: Robert Foulis. 8vo. 139pp. + advertisement. Gorgeous frontispiece of Sir Thomas More, original calf. Bookplate of a Robert Frederick Boyle. Spine skillfully re-backed to style by the Heritage bindery. A much sought after edition of one of literature's greatest works. Housed in a oatmeal colored clamshell box with a red morocco label. Like his counterpart Erasmus of Rotterdam, Sir Thomas More became a significant humanist philosopher. His fictional Utopia, published in Latin, depicted a perfect government that promoted harmony and hierarchical order. However, his description could be construed as a polemical attack on the existing governments. More’s defense of Roman Catholicism later led to his execution on the orders of England’s King Henry VIII, who had broken away from the church. Jefferson also owned this 1743 English-language edition of Utopia (where it remains in the library of Congress) printed in Glasgow by Robert Foulis. A very gorgeous copy. Volume III has an engraved frontispiece, 2 foldout maps, 1 foldout plate and 6 other plates. Paul de Rapin (March 25, 1661 - 1725), sieur of Thoyras (and therefore styled Thoyras de Rapin), was a French historian writing under English patronage. The son of Jacques de Rapin, an avocat at Castres (Tarn), he was educated at the Protestant academy of Saumur, and in 1679 became an advocate, but soon afterwards joined the army. The revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, and the death of his father led him to come to England; but, unable to find work there, he went on to the Netherlands where he enlisted in a company of French volunteers at Utrecht, commanded by his cousin, Daniel de Rapin. He accompanied William III to England in 1688, and during the Williamite war in Ireland he took part in the siege of Carrickfergus and the Battle of the Boyne, and was wounded at the Siege of Limerick (1690). Soon afterwards he was promoted to captain; but in 1693 he resigned in order to become tutor to the Earl of Portland's son. After travelling with the boy, he settled with his family (he married Marie-Anne Testart in 1699) in Holland, first at the Hague, then, to save money, at Wesel, in 1707. It was at Wesel that he began his great work, L'Histoire d'Angleterre. Volume I contained, in five books … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAKER, Henry
Henry Baker was an 18th-century English naturalist known for his work with the microscope. Baker wrote two treatises on using the microscope; 'Employment for the Microscope' and 'Microscope Made Easy'. These works illustrate using a microscope but they also include discoveries found whilst using one. Findings include salts found in urine, seeds of the vanilla bean, understanding the metals in vegetation, examining warts, the exposure and effects of sulfuric acid, observations of spider eyes and fangs, effects of light on oysters, formation of gems and their coloration, and in depth look into various salt crystals. This 1743 English edition of 'Microscope Made Easy' was published in London. While Baker's treatises are impressive and important by themselves, this impressive edition features incredible folding engravings. [Attributes: First Edition]

BURTIN, François-Xavier.
Landwehr, Coloured plates 49; Nissen, ZBI 769; Schuh, Burtin-1; Ward 410. First and only edition of this careful study on fossils discovered in the region of Brussels by François-Xavier de Burtin (1743-1818). "Apparently, the first extensive book treating Belgium fossils and minerals" (Schuh). Burtin accurately describes fossil fishes, tortoises, echinoderms, worms, etc. and gives an analysis of the geological composition of the soils around Brussels. These descriptions are accompanied by fine illustrations, engraved in brown and coloured by hand, by A. Pris, J.A. Balconi, etc., after M. J. Speeckaert, Daveaux, etc. The author studied medicine and natural sciences. He was doctor to Prince Charles de Lorraine, and was later appointed to the ruling council of the Netherlands, because of his excellent scientific work. With the arrival of the political upheavals of the latter part of the 18th century, he retired from public life to concentrate on science and writing. His interests were wide-ranging, and, in addition to geology, he wrote on agriculture and industry and was considered an authority on pictures, particularly the Dutch and Flemish schools. The title-page slightly soiled and some occasional foxing in the margins, otherwise in good condition and wholly untrimmed. BUNON, Robert.
Paris, [Joseph Bullot for] Briasson, Chaubert, and De Hansy, 1743. 3 works in 1 vol., 12mo, pp. xii, 237, [3]; xxvi, 410, [6]; 20; the first work with faint stain to upper outer corners of a few leaves, occasional spotting; very good copies in contemporary French calf, spine gilt in compartments with lettering-piece, marbled endpapers; head and tail a little worn, joints cracked, but sound.A fine sammelband of all of Bunon's separately published writings.1. First edition of 'the first book incorporating specialized odontological research. Bunon investigated the genesis of enamel hypoplasia' (Garrison & Morton).'One of the important questions studied by Bunon concerns the hygiene to be observed in order to obtain the development of a good dentition. On this question he rightly establishes the principle that hygiene and dental prophylaxis should begin from the period of the formation of the milk teeth. He works out this principle with rigorous logic, and finishes by tracing the hygiene of the mother during pregnancy, of the woman (be she mother or nurse) during the nursing period, and of the nursling as well . Bunon's researches into the development of the teeth enabled him to describe precisely the position that the various teeth of the second dentition occupy in the jaw with regard to the milk teeth, before these are shed. Bunon was, besides, the first author who studied accurately dental hypoplasia, and it is greatly to his honor that his ideas and observations about this pathological condition have been accepted and confirmed in substance by the greater part of the author … [Click Below for Full Description]
