Moreri, Louis
Paris & Venice: Francois Pitteri, 1743. 8 volumes, folio, engraved title-p. in vol. I, title printed in red and black; text in triple column, woodcut initials; contemporary full vellum, brown morocco labels on spines, sprinkled edges; a very good, sound, and impressive set. Ebert 14387: "A work esteemed notwithstanding its faults. The first edition appeared, Lyons, 1674. fol. in 1 vol. The work was gradually augmented by Parayre, the Abbe de St. Ussan, J. Le Clerc, Vaultier, Dupin, Jac. Bernard, L. Fr. Jos. de la Barre, Pt. Rogues and Cl. Pt. Goujet. Concerning the different editions, see Marchand, Dictionn. II. 289." Circle of Knowledge #13: "The title does not convey the full import of Moreri's work, which contains also much geographical and biographical material. His book is arranged alphabetically, with articles on places, people, books, and general subjects intermixed. Encyclopaedias modeled on Moreri, and containing much material translated from him, were published in Germany, Switzerland, and England; Peter the Great is supposed to have commanded a Russian translation, and an Italian translation was projected." And Spanish edition appeared in Paris in the mid-18th century in 5 volumes.

d'ALEMBERT, Jean le Rond (1717-1783).
Paris: David l'aine, 1743. Paris:: David l'aine, 1743., 1743. Small 4to. [4], xxvi, [2], 186, [2] pp. 4 folding plates. Bookplate of Andras Gedeon, catalog label of Freres Perisse. Very good. FIRST EDITION OF D'ALEMBERT'S GREAT WORK ON MECHANICS. This first published work of d'Alembert is a landmark in the history of mechanics. In his Traite de dynamique, he recognized that a scientific revolution had occurred and set out to formalize the new science of mechanics – an accomplishment often misattributed to Newton. "It reduces the laws of the motion of bodies to a law of equilibrium. Its statement that, the internal forces of inertia must be equal and opposite to the forces that produce the acceleration, is still known as d'Alembert's principle. This principle is applied to many phenomena and, in particular, to the theory of the motion of fluids." [PMM]. In this work, D'Alembert discusses his three laws of motion: inertia, the parallelogram of motion, and equilibrium. The Traite reduced the laws of the motion of bodies to a law of equilibrium. It has become useful in the solution of many technical and mechanical problems. D'Alembert, in addition to being a mathematician, mechanician, physicist and philosopher was also co-editor with Denis Diderot of the Encyclopedie. D'Alembert's method for the wave equation is also named after him. Provenance: Averos (signature on title-page) – from the catalog … [Click Below for Full Description]
