Cocchi Antonio
Firenze Francesco Moucke 1743 4° Pagine 84 Legatura coeva in cartone rustico. Esemplare con lievi tracce d'umido. Nel complesso ottimo esemplare ad ampi margini. RARA PRIMA EDIZIONE. Willard, Samuel
Boston: Printed by Green, Bushell, and Allen, for D. Henchman, 1743. [2],vi,216,[4]pp. Small octavo. Contemporary calf, rebacked. Corners worn. Later ownership inscription on front pastedown. Minor foxing and soiling. Very good. Second edition. A scarce early New England imprint. Samuel Willard, one of the most prominent ministers and intellectual leaders in New England in the final quarter of the seventeenth century. The clergyman began his career in the frontier settlement of Groton, Massachusetts, where he was confronted with a case of demonic possession and the destruction of the town during King Philip's War. Willard had become well known in Boston due to his printed sermons and in 1678 became the pastor of the Old South Church. As leader of this religious institution, he would confront a series of threats to the Puritan spiritual and social order including declining church membership, the revocation of the original charter of New England, and the Salem witchcraft trials. He responded to these controversies with both theological rigor and social moderation. "Willard acquired distinction as the result of a series of lectures in which he systematically surveyed the entire field of theology. As a master of learning and logic, whose sermons were frequently beyond the comprehension of his simpler hearers, he scorned the 'Enthusiasm' of the Baptist preachers....Conservative in theology, he was liberal in the practice of religion, and early relaxed the requirement of a public confession at the time of admission to the church" - DAB. Willard became a fellow of Harvard C … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nagel, Johann Andreas Michael (praes.) / Holste, Jakob Christoph Wilhelm (resp.).
Altdorf, Johann Adam Hessel, 1743. 4to. 56 pp. Slightly later papered spine. Very rare sole edition of this detailed study of the Al-Fatihah, the first Surah of the Holy Qu'ran. By the mid-18th century the text of the Qu'ran had become less of a heretical menace to European scholars and more of a document of serious study: the present work focuses on philological subtleties within the various manuscripts of the Qu'ran known to Europeans including Erpenius, Hinckelmann, Wasmuth, and Schiefferdecker. A printed dissertation defended by one of Nagel's students, Jakob Holste, the text presents a word-for-word comparison of two manuscripts of the Al-Fatihah: one in the possession of Nagel himself, and the other of Christoph Fürer von Haimendorf (1541-1610), who had brought a copy back from his visit to the Middle East in 1565. To these are further compared printed editions of Marracio, Hinckelmann, Erpenius, and others. Because no Arab typeface was available in Nuremburg at the time, the author is forced here to write the text of the Al-Fatihah in Hebrew characters (!). The last section of the work gives no less than 17 translations into Latin of the Al-Fatihah drawn from Arabic, Persian, and Turkish. Nagel and his student Holste finally propose a 'perfect' conglomerate translation of the Surah based on their findings. Much space is devoted to the question of whether Al-Fatihah was revealed in Medina or Mecca, and Nagel's discussion of this point even includes topographical details collected from previous authors (cf. pp. 13-15, 31-36). - OCLC shows just a handful of copies in in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus)
A. Millar, London. xvi, 311 pp.(1743); 385 pp. (1743); xvi, 349 pp.(1746); 313 pp., [ 1 p. errata] [4pp. publisher's advertisement] (1746). Full calf bindings elaborately tooled on both front and rear boards in three concentric vertical rectangles, each a different shade of brown. Spines have seven raised bands, two black leather labels with gilt lettering and rules. The lettering is bright and legible. Extremities are rubbed particularly at the corners. General wear and some crackling and flaking of leather; in a few places the leather at joints has started to separate. Bindings are very tight, skillfully and almost unnoticeably reinforced with archival tape. Text block is tight and bright white, remarkably with virtually no foxing. Pages are wavy but this does not affect their legibility. Volumes I and III have some water staining, again not affecting legibility. Volume I title page has been clipped at the top, but full title is intact, owner's signature on p. iii and inked notation on rear fep. End papers are toned, binding glue has soaked through. Book plates of Owen Winston on front paste downs. Latin on verso and English translation on the recto with explanatory notes at the bottom (in English). Samuel Johnson considered Francis' translation of Horace's lyrical poetry to be the best. A scarce complete set. Size: 12mo [Attributes: Hard Cover]

BROGGIA, Carlo Antonio
In Napoli, presso Pietro Palombo, 1743. PRIMA EDIZIONE. Peccho, G. 'Demetrius of Phalerum'
Ex officina Roberti Foulis, Glasguae [Glasgow] 1743 - Crown 8vo, pp. [ii], 197, [1]. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine divided by raised bands between double gilt rules, red morocco label, central lozenge tools in other compartments. Some spotting and soiling. Extremities rubbed, front joint cracked but held by cords, rear joint starting to crack, spine ends a bit worn, label chipped at edge. Bookplate of Fintray House Library to front pastedown (covering an earlier bookplate of the same source). A slightly unusual choice of text, a lecture on rhetorical style traditionally ascribed to Demetrius of Phalerum (4th century BC Athenian orator) but almost certainly actually dating from the second century AD. It was the first Greek text printed by the Foulis press, and in fact the first printing of a Greek text of any kind in Glasgow. This copy is Gaskell's crown 8vo variant with fleur-de-lys watermarks. Gaskell 31; ESTC T135853. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
